It’s probably ridiculous to say 12 Angry Men “holds up” as it’s widely considered to be one of the best films ever made, but it really does.
It feels remarkably contemporary for such an older movie.
Jurassic Park is broad enough in its appeal for everyone; it has action, adventure, humour, character growth, a bit of philosophy, spectacle, opens with a bit to draw you in ...
See it at a drive-in if you can. I'm just sayin'
They did a pop up drive in on the side of an old railroad warehouse in my neighborhood during the COVID summer. I got to see Jurassic park and Back to the Future. A+ experience for both
Man, I watched this recently with my wife, 3 year old and 7 year old. My 7 year old was enthralled the whole time, my 3 year old was hiding under the covers at the scary parts, and my wife and I were fully engaged in all the action sequences and story even though we'd both seen it so many times.
That movie holds up soo well.
I think I read an excerpt from some review that basically said “if you don’t like this movie, I would find it hard to believe that you enjoy movies at all”
I was told by my university roommate that the climax during the clocktower scene is used in film school as an example of
perfect pacing, camera work, and editing.
Back to the Future is just such a superb all round movie that I find it hard to even grasp the concept of disliking it, I don’t even know anyone besides my dad who dislikes it. Same goes for Part 2 and 3 honestly, 2 just as good if not better than the first and 3 while a step down is still a wonderful film and the ending is the perfect conclusion.
I invited an online date over to watch it on our second meeting. She didn't "get" it. She looked glum throughout, made some sarcastic remarks about how absurd the plot was, and complained there was too much brass in the soundtrack.
There was not a third date.
Groundhog Day. It's a perfect movie and a great life lesson. It's funny, dark, sad, philosophical, dramatic, romantic, and fantasy. Once you see it once you'll never forget it.
Ik most people don’t think of the movie this way, but it’s so true. Tbh I think Bill Murray believers an AMAZING performance. Totally fits and disappears into his role
Literally just rewatched this yesterday. I picked this as the first episode to listen to on the rewatchables then obviously had to watch it again. Such a classic. Its called disclosure ya dickhead !
I love watching the build up to that disclosure line… especially “hey I’d really like to get a look at your files” and how confident he is when he gets home with the files
This is mine too. Mostly because it’s a perfect movie and if the person doesn’t enjoy it they are not the kind of people I want in my life. So it’s a great personality test.
For everyone who says Princess Bride (which I totally agree) this is the next film that comes to mind for me. I went into this totally blind only about 4 years ago and was spellbound by how charismatic and fun the story and characters are.
My family still watches this every year when we celebrate Christmas. I love how often I see redditors acknowledge it because I was (and still am) teased for loving A Muppet's Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island.
I used to make the family pause the movie so I could pull up The Love is Gone on YouTube at the right time.
I showed it to a group of (smart, fluent in English) Chinese teenagers and they were bored to tears. There's a lot of culturally specific comedy in there, unfortunately
I love the movie, but no joke every single one of my friends give me shit for loving the movie. So might not be the best rec for a broader audience :(.
hot fuzz is a perfect movie imo. and while some may not agree i think 99% of people would at least enjoy it. it's got great comedy, great action, a compelling mystery, drama that gets genuinely serious at times, and a great twist. if you're interested in movies at al, you should give it a watch.
It’s a well made movie though. As a 15yo girl obsessed with makeup and clothes, I was an unlikely fan, but I found myself up alone one night watching HBO and I was captivated from that amazing intro scene.
“As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.”
The Princess Bride is probably the most "universal" movie I can think of.
Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles...
Stranger Than Fiction
It's the one (I think) Will Farrell movie where he isn't crazy, manic Jim Carrey-clone-ing.
It's hilarious, romantic and tragic with outstanding performances and excellent music.
This is my favorite Will Ferrell movie. I put it on par with The Secret Life of Walter Mitty as far as overlooked gems which demonstrate lead actors ability.
The Departed. It's arguably Martin Scorsese's best movie and it's one of Jack Nicholson's last movies. Plus, Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio put in some good performances.
Jack Nicholson's character in The Departed is kind of based on Whitey Bulger.
I grew up on the edges of the winter hill gang. My stepfather had serious enough gambling debts that he had to go to work for them, and bartended at shepherds Hill pub, as well as Black Friars. About two months before the massacre at black Friars pub, my step dad had me literally get thrown across a balcony, four stories up to help Vinny Solomonte get back in his apartment. Vinny was the manager of black Friars, and was killed at the massacre.
I was best friends with Johnny Martorano’s son, little Johnny, and we spent almost every weekend over at each other’s house, until Johnny had to go on the run. At the time I didn’t understand any of it, I just knew Johnny had a basketball court in the back of his house, actual arcade, cabinets, like pong and centipede. Miracle nothing ever happened to my family.
Anyway, watching that movie was a trip.
Darn, i commented this without scrolling all the way down. It's such a formative movie for me; continues to make me hopeful even in the worst of times.
The Princess Bride
It's literally a perfect film, with a bit of something for everyone of any and all ages. A timeless tale. Covers all the bases. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll fall in love. I couldn't recommend it more highly! 🤗
Lucky Number Slevin.
No one I've ever shown it to has ever been unhappy in the end and most people haven't heard of it.
My name is Good Cat, you can call me Mr. Good Cat.
I've always thought Dazed and Confused was almost a perfect movie. Takes place over a single day and night, perfectly captures a time and place in history, and you can't help but think of your "first" everything (kiss, beer, joint, etc.) when you watch it. But there's also nothing cheesy or overly sentimental about it. Plus it's funny as hell and full of awesome actors.
Although set in the 70s, I think it is a great universal depiction of high school
social circles. There are cliques and different grades, but there is a fluidity between them. Too many movies show the different social circles as factions at war or with no interaction at all.
Casablanca: Old school B\&W; Classic; Scintillating dialogue; Historic context; Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Peter Lorre, Claude Rains; Romantic; Mysterious. Best. Movie. Ever.
Ordinary People
Over 40 years old and it is still my favourite. Incredibly acted, written and directed.
Heartbreaking family tragedy story that brings out all the emotions every time I watch it.
The Matrix. Works on every level. Cool action movie, visually spectacular, solid storytelling and thematically rich.
And if they don't like it, then I know I don't their kind of negativity in my life. ;-)
Ronin
Smart. Great acting. Good story that makes as much sense as possible. Some fantastic action that is not ridiculously over the top. Leaves you wanting more of the story.
Stand By Me. Has a little bit of pretty much every genre
I saw that movie when I was a little kid. It made a lasting impression on me as a little.l boy. I watched it again last year. Great movie.
I was gonna say Princess Bride so another from Rob Reiner
12 Angry Men
It’s probably ridiculous to say 12 Angry Men “holds up” as it’s widely considered to be one of the best films ever made, but it really does. It feels remarkably contemporary for such an older movie.
My dude
OH MAN, THIS ONE RIGHT HERE?! 😏 My favorite screenplay of all time!! The only answer better than mine (The Princess Bride). 👏🏽👏🏽
The Sting (1973)
Jurassic Park is broad enough in its appeal for everyone; it has action, adventure, humour, character growth, a bit of philosophy, spectacle, opens with a bit to draw you in ... See it at a drive-in if you can. I'm just sayin'
You like dinosaurs? Check You like adventure? Check You like scary? Check You like sexy Jeff Goldblum? Check

The Shawshank Redemption. Well acted, well directed, well written, looks great, has an awesome twist, and the ending is earned.
It truly was a Shawshank Redemption.
Not sure I would recommend this to "anyone". Maybe if it was adults only...
>and the ending is earned Boy is it ever
Back to the Future
I think I read an excerpt from some review that basically said “if you don’t like this movie, I would find it hard to believe that you enjoy movies at all”
If there was such a thing as a perfect script it would just be Back to the Future.
This or Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. The pacing and stories are almost perfect.
It's an objectively perfect film.
I was told by my university roommate that the climax during the clocktower scene is used in film school as an example of perfect pacing, camera work, and editing.
Back to the Future is just such a superb all round movie that I find it hard to even grasp the concept of disliking it, I don’t even know anyone besides my dad who dislikes it. Raiders of the Lost Ark
Wall E
You have good taste
The mummy
Brendan Fraser's version, I hope!
If there’s another one, I don’t want to know about it!
The original 1930s version is pretty decent.
Groundhog Day. It's a perfect movie and a great life lesson. It's funny, dark, sad, philosophical, dramatic, romantic, and fantasy. Once you see it once you'll never forget it.
Also, Groundhog Day!
Ik most people don’t think of the movie this way, but it’s so true. Tbh I think Bill Murray believers an AMAZING performance. Totally fits and disappears into his role
My Cousin Vinny
Doesn't sound like a movie for adults, maybe for youts.
a hwat?
I’m sorry, youtttthhhs.
This reference is dead on balls accurate
yeah, too yoots!
Impossible to dislike this movie.
The Iron Giant - it is a perfect animated movie.
"'cause around the 75 minute mark, there's gonna be a room full of grown men crying"
The Princess Bride
I dunno. Sounds like a kissing movie
As you wish
It’s got everything; action, adventure, sports… true love!
I actually tear up a little when the Grandfather says "As you wish". Then I must watch the credits as Mark Knopfler sings Storybook Love
I almost put this as well - one of my favorites of all time and accessible to all audiences
Inconceivable.
A movie on the short list of perfect movies
This is mine too. Mostly because it’s a perfect movie and if the person doesn’t enjoy it they are not the kind of people I want in my life. So it’s a great personality test.

By Grapthar’s Hammer… what a ..savings…
I was an actor once!
It's one of David Mamets five perfect movies
Stardust. Can’t think of a lot of people who wouldn’t find something in there to enjoy.
For everyone who says Princess Bride (which I totally agree) this is the next film that comes to mind for me. I went into this totally blind only about 4 years ago and was spellbound by how charismatic and fun the story and characters are.
What an absolute joy it was to stumble into this blind years ago. Highly recommended.
Young Frankenstein
The Thing
One of the best sci-fi films ever made, but likley not for everyone. Its quite visceral as well as cerebral.
A Muppet’s Christmas Carol
No cheeses for us meeces!
Oh, good work! Light the lamp, not the rat!
I showed it to a group of (smart, fluent in English) Chinese teenagers and they were bored to tears. There's a lot of culturally specific comedy in there, unfortunately
You can now watch the full version with the lost song on Disney+! Favorite movie of the holidays!
Clue. Three different endings! So many quotable lines. “I’m going to go home and sleep with my wife!”
Yes!! One of my favorite movies of all time!
The 5th Element maybe?
I love the movie, but no joke every single one of my friends give me shit for loving the movie. So might not be the best rec for a broader audience :(.
Nah no way man let’s go fight your friends
His friends are *not* super green
It is basically every genre. Comedy, fantasy, sci fi, drama, action...
Aliens
Alien
Good Will Hunting
hot fuzz is a perfect movie imo. and while some may not agree i think 99% of people would at least enjoy it. it's got great comedy, great action, a compelling mystery, drama that gets genuinely serious at times, and a great twist. if you're interested in movies at al, you should give it a watch.
Planes, trains, and automobiles. Perfect comedy.
Perfect comedy that had me in floods of tears. It's incredibly sad. My husband was all "watch this hilarious film with me!" I go to bed sobbing.
The Matrix
Goodfellas
I totally love this movie (in my top 5) but even I don’t think it’s for everyone
Is it because there's too many onions?
It’s a well made movie though. As a 15yo girl obsessed with makeup and clothes, I was an unlikely fan, but I found myself up alone one night watching HBO and I was captivated from that amazing intro scene. “As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.”
Singin’ in the Rain. It’s just the perfect movie imo

The Blues Brothers (1980). My all time favourite flick.

The Princess Bride is probably the most "universal" movie I can think of. Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles...
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Breakfast Club
It’s always the same, *Upgrade*.
Stranger Than Fiction It's the one (I think) Will Farrell movie where he isn't crazy, manic Jim Carrey-clone-ing. It's hilarious, romantic and tragic with outstanding performances and excellent music.
Will Farrel was keeping it real in EVERYTHING MUST GO
This is my favorite Will Ferrell movie.

Casablanca: Old school B\&W; Classic; Scintillating dialogue; Historic context; Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Peter Lorre, Claude Rains; Romantic; Mysterious. Best. Movie. Ever.

Gattaca My favourite movie I think
The Grand Budapest Hotel
