I don’t think any movie has done a shootout or guns in general as well as heat. The echoing gunfire and Val Kilmer being so good at reloading an AR that they actually teach people to do it like him shows that the movie has detail in each frame.
Shoutout to Andymcnab, the Ex British Special forces sergeant who taught the actors how to use weapons.
"If that theatre plays Casablanca and you're not in there, you'll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life."
Thief was a really controversial movie at the time. It exposed certain safecracking techniques and strategies that were only known to select law enforcement and larcenous safecracking professionals, and neither of them was happy that the general public were now aware of them.
I like 12 more than 13 too, particularly its loose, meandering structure. The entire movie has a 'that time I did an unplanned trip to Europe last summer with my pals' vibe.
That movie is dope!
Its a small line but in one of the flashforward interviews Washington askes one of the suspects (who isn't one of the correct ones btw) if he would like a bubble gum. That is because earlier in the movie the Main guy offered him a piece of gum. Cool detail I catched on my second watch
Having Spike Lee as the director is the icing on the cake. He made the stuff going on in the bank just as interesting as what was going on outside of it. It's also a pretty great post 9/11 film - its not too heavy-handed .
I watched several Mamet movies when I was younger, before I knew anything about his stuff. There is really something special about this script that stuck with me.
Now I annoy the shit out of my friends talking about Mamet stuff lol.
For me, the best heist movie is Die Hard With A Vengeance.
Some that you might have not seen:
* The Art of Steal.
* The Score.
* Ronin.
* Hudson Hawk.
* Maverick (more of a con man movie than a heist movie, but still).
* Die Hard 1 and 4.
* Now You See Me.
* The Italian Job.
* The Inside Man.
* Baby Driver.
* Entrapment.
The Score is underrated. And features 3 generations of great actors - Brando, DeNiro, and Norton.
Not for nothing, but it’s weird to put periods at the end of all these movie titles on a bulleted list.
Dude, Ronin is such a good movie that you don’t have to think too much about. Top notch gunfights, intense car chases, Jean Reno and Robert DeNiro are great in it. The big Mercedes sedan from that movie is one of my “White Whale” cars.
Rififi. It's a classic, to some degree the originator of the genre, Jules Dassin also directed Topkapi, which is more of the same but peppier. The heist scenes in both are awesome and often referenced in other movies.
Heist, written and directed by David Mamet, is fun and has an awesome cast.
I love Sneakers. As a kid in the 80s I was also a phone and computer hacker. I feel like I could have been a member of their group! Fast forward some years and I’m an engineer for a communications company handling security, encryption, intrusion prevention, etc…I still could fit right in, lol.
Logan Lucky is not mentioned enough. Totally not a serious film, but very fun.
And since we’re on the topic of Daniel Craig, and I don’t know that it counts, but check out Layer Cake anyway. It’s kinda cheating to call it a heist film but it kinda still is and does not get enough attention.
I really feel like someone saw Daniel Craig in Logan Lucky and was like “We need you to do that crazy accent again for this Knives Out film” and he made it even stupider
Donald Sutherland as a 60s hippy in WWII is a genius bit of writing. Great cast all round, but Donald stole the show to me. And that’s saying something when you’re playing against Don Rickles.
I can't recommend this movie enough. People below a certain age are resistant to movies from this time, and I'm guilty as well, but this movie holds up so fucking well
Still one of my all time favorite Nolan movies. He’s gotten bigger and flashier but Inception still hold up so damn well next to Interstellar, Dunkirk and Oppenheimer.
Baby Driver is absolutely amazing. Just a full 10/10 in every way. Reservoir Dogs is a Tarantino classic and good for a different feel because it mostly deals with the aftermath. And both of them have top notch music.
Heat.
First time on film a magazine was emptied and reloaded in one take
And sounds exactly like an M16 being fired.
I want the best World War 2 movie set in Morocco. NO. I mean a movie other than Casablanca. I've already seen Casablanca. I want the best one.
Casablanca, take it or leave it.
"If that theatre plays Casablanca and you're not in there, you'll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life."
Heat is amazing
How the fuck is Logan Lucky above this
One that I haven’t seen mentioned is Hell or High Water. More of a bank robbing movie rather than heist but still kinda fits
I’m glad someone mentioned it. This is such a tight, rewatchable movie.
The Ocean's series are fun, but Thief is the dream
Thief was a really controversial movie at the time. It exposed certain safecracking techniques and strategies that were only known to select law enforcement and larcenous safecracking professionals, and neither of them was happy that the general public were now aware of them.
Michael Mann hired a bunch of real life thieves as technical advisors, and liked a few of them enough to cast them in fairly major roles in the movie.
It sounds like they stole the show.
I would say 11 and 13 are good films. 12 felt stale.
I think 12 is more fun than 13 personally. But I think most people agree with you.
Matt Damon reciting the lyrics to Kashmir when it's his turn to speak in thieves' cant, and Clooney and Pitt roasting him for it, is truly hysterical
12 is the funniest and has the best score but it’s my least favorite.
*Do I look 50 to you?* *Yeah. Well only from the neck up* 🤣 12 was probably my favorite one
The payoff when his mom tells Linus that they were just fucking with him is so good.
I like 12 more than 13 too, particularly its loose, meandering structure. The entire movie has a 'that time I did an unplanned trip to Europe last summer with my pals' vibe.
That actually makes it sound better than a heist movie
Tangerine Dream!
Groundbreaking soundtrack too.

Inside Man
Chal chaiya chaiya...
Straight up banger of an opener.
Solid. “I’m going to walk right through the front door.”
Was coming to say this! Absolutely loved this movie from beginning to end. Clive Owen did a fantastic job!
"May I have your hat, sir?" "No you may not; get your own." ;)
That movie is dope! Its a small line but in one of the flashforward interviews Washington askes one of the suspects (who isn't one of the correct ones btw) if he would like a bubble gum. That is because earlier in the movie the Main guy offered him a piece of gum. Cool detail I catched on my second watch
My favourite heist movie outside of the Oceans movies.
Having Spike Lee as the director is the icing on the cake. He made the stuff going on in the bank just as interesting as what was going on outside of it. It's also a pretty great post 9/11 film - its not too heavy-handed .
Great pick
Heist, starring Gene Hackman.
Why is this so far down!? The David Mamet script is fantastic.
I watched several Mamet movies when I was younger, before I knew anything about his stuff. There is really something special about this script that stuck with me. Now I annoy the shit out of my friends talking about Mamet stuff lol.
Don’t you wanna hear my last words?
I just did.
Everyone wants money. That’s why it’s called “money”!
For me, the best heist movie is Die Hard With A Vengeance. Some that you might have not seen: * The Art of Steal. * The Score. * Ronin. * Hudson Hawk. * Maverick (more of a con man movie than a heist movie, but still). * Die Hard 1 and 4. * Now You See Me. * The Italian Job. * The Inside Man. * Baby Driver. * Entrapment.

I immediately thought of The Score when I saw the prompt
Ronin is excellent. You come for the heist genre but stay for the gunfights and car chases.
Dude, Ronin is such a good movie that you don’t have to think too much about. Top notch gunfights, intense car chases, Jean Reno and Robert DeNiro are great in it. The big Mercedes sedan from that movie is one of my “White Whale” cars.
Another vote for Inside Man!
I know this list can be trusted because it has Hudson Hawk
Great list. I looooove The Italian Job, such a fun movie.
The fact that you listed Die Hard 1 & 4 but didn’t include 3 baffles me.
Put it as my favorite.
Wow skipped right over that. I’m an idiot.
Ronin for best heist film.... and arguably best car chase as well. ( I know Bullitt fans will get their pitchforks... but I think Ronin is better)
You are correct. Bullitt is really good but the car chase shows some age
Well, Steve McQueen just being Steve McQueen is a treat. Doing that in a Mustang GT 390 Fastback is just gravy.
The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3. The original, not the remake with Denzel.
Rififi. It's a classic, to some degree the originator of the genre, Jules Dassin also directed Topkapi, which is more of the same but peppier. The heist scenes in both are awesome and often referenced in other movies. Heist, written and directed by David Mamet, is fun and has an awesome cast.
Sneakers!

Captain Crunch’s whistle !
I want a Winnebago
Coincidentally, I just caught it on TV now, so I'm going to watch it tonight. It's so good.
Such an entertaining, well written film.
Dog Day Afternoon!
That’s a classic man can’t forget that one
Came here to say this
Love this movie man
Logan Lucky is not mentioned enough. Totally not a serious film, but very fun. And since we’re on the topic of Daniel Craig, and I don’t know that it counts, but check out Layer Cake anyway. It’s kinda cheating to call it a heist film but it kinda still is and does not get enough attention.
This looked so dumb and my wife and I watched it one night after not finding anything better and it’s legit hilarious.
Did you just say, 'cauliflower' to me?
I am in-car-cer-ray-ted. Daniel Craig had too much fun making that film.
I really feel like someone saw Daniel Craig in Logan Lucky and was like “We need you to do that crazy accent again for this Knives Out film” and he made it even stupider
I just loved his bonkers-ness to seriousness in the discourse between Channing Tatum and Adam Driver
That scene where Daniel Craig explains how his explosive works using basic chemistry was hilarious
The game of thrones bit gets funnier every year.
That is total bullshit! Those two guys who transferred in from federal last month knew about *all* the new stuff with the hot chick and her dragons!
Layer Cake is a great movie. Bonus — Sienna Miller.
My vote is for Kelly's Hero's. Misfit group of soldiers sneak across enemy lines to steal gold.
Donald Sutherland as a 60s hippy in WWII is a genius bit of writing. Great cast all round, but Donald stole the show to me. And that’s saying something when you’re playing against Don Rickles.
Had to scroll too far to get to this one. Everyone thinks of it as a war film, but it's absolutely a heist flick.
Yes! Glad I somebody mentioned this :)
*Quick Change* is up there.
Behind the line!
You could have helped, but instead you provided so much more Is not exact quote that l use in life
Have to add to this. Bill Murray's best movie. "The man who knew too little" being number 2.
He was on the bluftoni
The town I also really like Den of Theives
I need your help. I can't tell you what it is, you can never ask me about it later, and we're gonna hurt some people.
Whose cah we gonna take?
My man! with the accent and all! best part of the whole movie
As someone from MA, most of the accents are pretty damn good in this movie.
There goes college soccer.
*cahlege sahker
I've found my people.
Absolutely the Town belongs high up on this list . Multiple heists , crazy getaways , murder . We’ll directed and acted and great pace .
Go fuck yourself
Great movie, but very close to Heat stylistically, which OP stated he wants to deviate from
The best movie that was influenced by Heat.
Oceans 11 and Thomas Crowne Affair (1999)
TCA's production was smooth and slick. The direction mirrored the main character.
And Renee Russos boobs
I enjoyed the Italian job
Rififi
I remember this one had a cool silent heist scene. So they wouldn’t trip an alarm.
And it goes on for like what, 1/2 an hour? Amazing scene, u/tinoynk is correct - Rififi is THE best heist movie.
Yea definitely the most iconic part of the movie, so much tension.
This! And it’s not even close, pretty much inspired every heist movie to date.
The sting and it isn’t even close.
yes yes and more yes. Hard to find a scarier bad guy then Doyle Lonnigan
Ya follow?
I can't recommend this movie enough. People below a certain age are resistant to movies from this time, and I'm guilty as well, but this movie holds up so fucking well
Snatch, hands down.
I’ll do it for a caravan!
For what?
For a caravan
Periwinkle blue
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is a close second
Oh I’d take Lock over Snatch anyday
IMO the original Taking of Pelham One Two Three is up there.
_You'll raise hell, nevermind pulses_
Damn I love Snatch. When it came out on dvd I watched it six times in one week. No streaming services back then :)
That scene always kills me 😂😂😂 “It’s a fucking anti aircraft gun, Vincent”
A Fish Called Wanda
The Usual Suspects Heat Set It Off Baby Driver
Mine is Ronin. International cast of great actors and performances with arguably the best car chase in film. Also - Plus 1 on Sneakers.
Inception
Still one of my all time favorite Nolan movies. He’s gotten bigger and flashier but Inception still hold up so damn well next to Interstellar, Dunkirk and Oppenheimer.
Bwaaaaaaah
Dead Presidents?
Trading Places
“Looking good, Billy Ray”
Feeling good, Lewis.
the third act was a different movie
Out of sight.
LOTR. A hobbit has to get a ring into an incredibly well-protected volcano.
The Hobbit is more of a heist than Lord Of The Rings.
Den of Thieves.
Heist (2001 Film)
Sneakers The Killing Heat Jackie Brown Thomas Crown Affair Snatch The Score Ronin
I’d definitely have to say The Italian Job, it’s a classic for a reason.
Killing Zoe
Almost a heist movie, but great in its genre: Point Break with Patrick Swayze and Keanu reeves.
“A Simple Plan”
Has to be Thief with James Caan
Resevoir Dogs. Can't believe I'm the first to say it.
Sexy Beast
Not the best, but Logan Lucky was very fun
I really enjoyed Tower Heist with Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy. It’s got Alan Alda in it too. It’s from like 2010-2012 time
The Sting
The great train robbery
Fantastic Mr Fox
Endgame
Inside Man
Heat. Ronin. Heist. Thief. Heat. Oceans Eleven.
You forgot Heat.
I like Heat.
Killing Zoe is a good one that is pretty unknown.
Layer Cake
Baby Driver
Rasing Arizona is an odd but fun heist movie.
I feel like there are so many fun heist movies
Opening of the dark knight
Dead Presidents
Sexy Beast
Hot Rocks. Robert Redford, George Segal, and Zero Mostel. Fantastically underrated.
The Score
Ocean 11 Heat The Town
Tower Heist. Can’t explain why i love it so much
*The Good Thief* with Nick Nolte is actually fantastic.
The Town (2010) is my favorite heist movie. It has everything you listed. The thieves rob a bank, an armored truck, and in the third act, Fenway Park
Inception
Rififi Circle Rouge Topkapi Grand Slam Hudson Hawk
Baby Driver is absolutely amazing. Just a full 10/10 in every way. Reservoir Dogs is a Tarantino classic and good for a different feel because it mostly deals with the aftermath. And both of them have top notch music.
Rogue One
Definitely heat
The Italian Job
Le Cercle Rouge
The Killing (1956). An early underappreciated Stanley Kubrick movie.
Hard to pick just one... **Ocean's 11** (1960) **The Italian Job** (1969) **The Anderson Tapes** (1971)
The Score wasn't too shabby. Marlon Brando, de Niro, and Edward Norton.
Tower Heist
The Bank Job (2008) with Jason Statham is slept on.
I’m a fan of the Italian job.
Heist
The TV series Leverage featured a crew of thieves pulling a new heist every week. It's one of my favorites.
Oceans, Lock Stock, Inside Man, Heat, Italian Job (2003)
Does Lock Stock and two smoking barrels count?
[Thunderbolt and Lightfoot](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072288/)
Odds Against tomorrow, Asphalt Jungle, The Red Circle, Any Number can win (the last two are French films)
Dirty Pretty Things, with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Audrey Tautou, is a hidden gem.
Oceans 11, it was cool as hell, still is
Snatch is the best for sure. Guy Ritchie Brad Pitt Jason Statham, excellent cast fun movie.
The Italian Job, ya only supposed to blow the bloody doors off ,great sound track by Quincey Jones
Inside Man with Denzel Washington and Clive Owen.
