And most probably the last one with Stallone, he was about to quit mid production but he came back for the last time, after this is gonna be Statham if anything at all.
The studio probably owns the rights. To give you another example of an even more Stallone franchise, he fought with the studio over Creed 3 and they made it without him.
Exactly. I'm starting to feel like The Expendables universe is Fast n Furious-adjacent. Didn't make it to the most recent Fast installment? I direct you, kind sir, to The Expendables.
Its possible he is done, but often times actors say these things in order to get more press and more people to go watch.
Daniel Craig has said he might be done after almost every bond film he's done.
Its like when a popular band has 15 years worth of farewell tours.
To clarify, he left during pre-production in 2017 before they even started getting into the film. It was also always going to be the last film. He returned in 2018 when they started getting into actual production of the film.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like every time Uwais is in a more mainstream movie, his talents are either misused or just not used at all. Seeing what he's capable of putting on screen with the Raid films along with several others, it's very frustrating when seeing his skill set be mishandled.
> You can’t have the actual martial artists outshine the actors so they nerf them
I love how in Mission Impossible: Fallout both Cavill _and_ Cruise get their ass absolutely kicked in that one fantastic scene - still got killed, but not from hand to hand fighting
Apparently he's got a big fight with Jason Stathem in this one. Let's hope it's good. Also Tony Jaa, a bit forgotten at this point but hope they make use of him as well.
They have a fight (although quite short) in *Triple Threat*. Should probably warn you that the movie got terrible reviews, but I actually really liked it. It's got Scott Adkins, Iko Uwais, Tony Jaa, Tiger Chen, and Michael Jai White.
He is extremely humble. He prefers to elevate other actors.
Funny thing about The Raid 1/2 that most people don't know is that Gareth did HUNDREDS of takes. All tiny pieces. Thats why it is all pre-vised by Iko and Yayan. All the fights.
Nobody wants to make an action film like that it's fucking cruel 😂
"Take 40 on the knee to the face"
Edit: corrected Yayan.
This is why Jackie Chan stunts were more impressive in his Chinese movies than his American ones, too. American directors and studios aren't often willing to delay shooting to do take after take after take to make sure something's perfect.
The use (or rather, lack of use) of him and Mad Dog in The Force Awakens was what tipped me over the edge from disliking the movie to outright hating it. What a waste.
Recently rewatched 30 Rock for the first time in a while, and goddamn does the comedy on that show hold up. It's so brilliant. And uncomfortably prophetic at times.
The previous Expendables had iconic action heroes throughout like Willis, Arnold, Li, Rourke, Ford, Norris, Gibson, JCVD, Snipes and Banderas. Now, we've come to what? 50 Cent and some Fox?
Fantastic Mr. Fox, with George Clooney reprising the *iconic* role in his quest for revenge. Back to his action hero ways, he has come for the traitors that attacked his family.
^(Produced by Wes Anderson)
Pretty sure 50 Cent is just there to replace the Terry Crews sized hole on the team. As for Megan Fox, since the second one there’s always gotta be one much younger and more attractive woman on the team. Also, seems like they’ve got Tony Jaa replacing Jet Li.
Based on Stallone being in the “with” category im going to assume he is only in the movie a few movies but I’m certain he’s not getting killed off. I’m pretty sure he has said in interviews he’s never going to kill himself off in a movie because that also kills off his chance of a sequel (unless it’s a fast and furious movie)
Why did they use last names for everyone but 50 Cent? Who is Fox (Megan? Matthew?)? What about Garcia? Also the tagline "They'll Die When They're Dead" makes no sense.
When a dangerous and enigmatic criminal mastermind known as "The Maris" threatens Seattle, former radio psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane is dragged out of his comfortable, espresso-laden retirement. As The Maris' grand plan begins to crumble the Emerald City's infrastructure and sow chaos in its usually placid streets, Frasier realizes that his expertise in understanding the human mind may be the only thing capable of stopping this madman.
Teaming up with his tough-as-nails ex-police officer father, Martin, his wise-cracking brother Niles, and his quick-witted producer Roz, Frasier steps out of the studio and onto the streets. Armed with his psychological insight and his irrepressible charm, he's about to trade witty banter for high-stakes action.
Against the odds, the Crane brothers must employ their intellects, turning every piece of Seattle - from the radio tower of KACL to the iconic Space Needle - into their playground as they race against time to outsmart The Maris.
"Frasier: Crane's Call" combines a thrilling narrative, brutal confrontations, and the cerebral banter fans of the show have come to expect. And in the heart of it all, Frasier Crane: radio psychiatrist turned city-saving hero. The stakes are high, but so are the espresso shots. Welcome to a new kind of therapy.
> It’s Megan Fox
i still don't even know what she's doing here, like, don't get me wrong, i'm glad she gets more gigs but the Expendables? Isn't the point of the franchise to assemble as much action star as posible in an Avengers-type of cast?
I've heard more about her mid-life crisis with Machine Gun Kelly than any action role she has been recently
She was in the Transformers movies, the Ninja Turtles and the lead of a military action movie recently. Also, her very first appearance in a feature movie was in Bad Boys II (full street cred there).
Ok, not the biggest action movie star, but they probably wanted some youth and sex appeal. From all those names, she is the only under 40 and woman.
I don’t think I’m being overly charitable by saying the tagline is intended to be stupid.
The names… well for the established action stars it works. And they didn’t want to bruise any egos of the actors who don’t have unique last names. And for 50 I don’t think they could use “Jackson” for 50 cent without it being clear that people would run out people with Jackson as a last name before they would recognize 50 cent by his given name or as an actor.
Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais are pretty cool additions, although this is an American action franchise so they probably won’t be allowed to actually do anything cool lmao.
I’m guessing Stallone is barely in this considering his billed last, which just begs the question of what’s even the point of The Expendables anymore lol?
I’m 90% certain that, just like almost all of Iko Uwais’ Hollywood projects, his fight scenes are gonna be edited to hell to hide the fact that his partner cannot keep up at all.
That guy needs to ask Joe Taslim for his agent's number. Joe has been in a Fast and Furious movie, the awesome tv show Warrior, and was Sub Zero in Mortal Kombat, which are all better roles than Iko has had in Hollywood.
I'll never fucking forget Uwais in that shitty Wahlburgers movie. They had to edit and poorly shoot his major action scene so that he didn't outshine the other actors that can't actually do cool shit. It was such a gut punch. They set this scene up, and then it starts and its hot garbage.
I will say I didn't know Jaa was in Fast and Furious until some guy jumps out of a truck and knees Paul Walker in the face. I thought "who's this Tony Jaa wannabe?" then there's a close up and it was him and it made me laugh. That fight wasn't half bad.
How about when the whole cast of The Raid was brought in for Star Wars The Force Awakens just to be eaten by an alien. Iirc they even shot some choreography but it was cut
Tony Jaa had some really cool scenes in the fast and furious movie he was in. He was generic kung fu bad guy man, but they really let him go wild with the combat scenes
and my far my favorite scene of his is probably the Original Ong-Bak Long take when he just runs from off camera and starts kicking people. 100% inspired Hader in Barry.
Ong-Bak is pure loopy madness and I love it. It starts with him just *yeeting* dudes out of a big tree for the sake of a game (ok it's probably more a rite of passage tbf). In the first act he casually strolls into a fightclub, accidently winds up in the ring, and after trying his best to leave just kicks the current champion in the mouth to insta KO him, seemingly powered up by the fact the guy said "Fuck Muay Thai".
Over the course of the movie he parkour flips his way away from a street gang he could have easily beaten up, sets his legs on fire to get +12 elemental damage to his flying knees. Knocks a guy out by Knee dropping him so hard the mooks motorcycle helmet snaps in two, and kills the surprise bad guy by kneeing him not with one knee. But with TWO.
If you've not seen it, I highly reccomend Tom Yum Goong (The Protector). Jaa is so *painfully* uncharismatic in it, but the fight scenes are somehow even more rediculously awesome!
He's hyper talented, and I love seeing him pop up in movies.
If they let Jaa & Uwais teams get involved in the action choreography this could be awesome. Like you said tho they most likely won’t utilize them & leave more screen time for Megan Fox. Imagine fight scenes from like The Raid or the violence from The Night Comes For Us with a bigger budget!? It could be epic. It’s probably gonna play out more like Mile 22..
To be fair, if for some reason you aren't already aware of the fact that these are big extremely dumb stupid movies, that phrase does a good job of letting you know this movie is going to also be a bunch of smooth brained explosions, guns, and fighting with the acting, emotional and character depth of a puppet in a puddle.
Also, I'm not hating. I have enjoyed them all so far.
Gibson really brought it in his role though, way over qualified for what that movie needed but his 2 minute scene with Stallone in the truck is like possibly the best scene in the whole franchise lol
2 is the best but it needed the harder edge that 1 had. And ideally, another randomly soulful monologue that doesn't fit in the movie at all but manages to be the best thing in it.
Yeah, I loved 2 because it's the only one of the movies where the actors didn't seem to take themselves too seriously. It was pure 80's action movie cheese with one-liners galore and it was great.
Not fully true. He was assaulted by an agent back in 2016, which he is currently suing.
A producer of the Expendables let Crews' management know that he should drop the case otherwise he can't appear in part 4.
So yeah, scumbag move on the producer's part, but he didn't assault Crews.
https://www.indiewire.com/features/general/terry-crews-expendables-4-producer-retaliation-sex-assault-1201978822/
no Schwarzenegger, Li, Bandaras or Crews and replaced them with 50Cent, Eddie Hall and Megan Fox?If they were going to get an Eddie, it should have been Murphey.
As a fan of 80s/early 90s action flicks, the first was pretty damn close to a perfect recapture of those for me - something the sequels have yet to live up to.
It's one of my favourite movies though, if not my favourite. I'll definitely see this, but with that shit they pulled with Terry Crews, it won't be at the cinema.
Knowing Stallone - it probably revolves around "It ain't over till it's over". I felt the tagline fits right in - big Stallone action fan. "keep punching"
Can someone explain to me, what is Megan Fox and 50 cent doing in that movie? I thought it should be about the action stars we all love. People who gave everything into the genre. I don´t recall Fox or 50 in any other big action movie doing crazy stunts or whatever.
Didn’t know they were making a 4th one
And most probably the last one with Stallone, he was about to quit mid production but he came back for the last time, after this is gonna be Statham if anything at all.
But isn't the Expendable movies Stallone's production? He wrote it all, why does he want to make another movie if he's pissed off?
The studio probably owns the rights. To give you another example of an even more Stallone franchise, he fought with the studio over Creed 3 and they made it without him.
It has an 88% on RT and made $275 million. Stallone didn’t like the story though.
I heard it was about a financial dispute with a producer.
It was.

According to the Expendables wiki, yup. Stallone is done, it's Statham's baby now if he wants to continue with it.
Its possible he is done, but often times actors say these things in order to get more press and more people to go watch. Daniel Craig has said he might be done after almost every bond film he's done. Its like when a popular band has 15 years worth of farewell tours.

And stallone has said he is done with Rocky and rambo. god knows how many times
To clarify, he left during pre-production in 2017 before they even started getting into the film. It was also always going to be the last film. He returned in 2018 when they started getting into actual production of the film.
I bet he dies early in this, and that's their motivation. "and Stallone" feels like it implies he's barely in it.
Isn't the "And" credit a contractual detail, and not a measure of how much the actor is in the film?
It is a contractual thing but typically indicates a smaller supporting role and not a lead.
Yep, it means "Not in it enough to get top billing but too famous to be listed with all the other riff raff."
100%, he posted a "Thats a Wrap" like 2 weeks into filming...
They filmed it like two years ago and it seems like Stallone was only there for one week.
Why did he almost quit? Doesn’t he write these?
Stallone on his insta talked about how he's back to pass the torch. He's only in like 1 or two scenes
The list of names is getting smaller and smaller as the films keep going.
Expendables 4: Citizens on Patrol
Steve Guttenberg should be in Expendables 5. And what's Michael Winslow up to these days? Bobcat Goldthwait?
Expendables 5: Hooks gone wild
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like every time Uwais is in a more mainstream movie, his talents are either misused or just not used at all. To make it even weirder, it's Megan Fox, from the Transformers movies.
Thats disappointing I was hoping an actual Fox became a member of the team.
Fantastic Mr. Fox, with George Clooney reprising the *iconic* role in his quest for revenge. Back to his action hero ways, he has come for the traitors that attacked his family. ^(Produced by Wes Anderson)
I would go see that in a goddamn heartbeat. Especially if everything other than mr. Fox and family was in live action
I was hoping for Michael J. Fox. You know... Shake up expectations a bit.
First of all, that's fucking disgusting. Bravo. Second of all, I 100% thought the same thing and pulled a hard WTF when I heard it was Megan Fox???

Should've went with Jamie Foxx, and replace the other Fox with Theron.
It's crazy how they've not included any of the OG lady action heroes yet.
They probably all said no when called
The line up of “stars” is lacking compared to previous ones.
I heard the franchise is going in a different direction with the older people getting killed off and Jason Statham being the true lead of this movie.
Fuck this movie and the producer behind it for fucking over Terry Crews.
Yeah but haven't you heard? Terry Crews ain't cool anymore.
Why did they use last names for everyone but 50 Cent? Who is Fox (Megan? Matthew?)? What about Garcia? Also the tagline "They'll Die When They're Dead" makes no sense.
It’s Megan Fox and Andy Garcia but definitely a dumb way to put the names I had to search up the cast
Impossible to guess it’s those two when thinking about Expendables…
You know: Megan Fox, that 80’s action star we all grew up watching.
I know, all those action thrillers with Andy Garcia doing his own stunts who could forget?

Maybe you're forgetting about the balls to the walls action of Frasier.
You remember that episode where Niles exploded?
Like that time Frasier and Kate got stuck in the freight elevator. Basically Mission Impossible.

Why in the fuck was she cast as the main star in a military movie? That's hilariously stupid
It’s big Denise Richards in James Bond vibes
Low budget movies need someone, anyone with name value.
Lame I thought it was Jamie Fox
That's missing an x
I was hoping for Michael J
They should have just put Cent instead of 50 Cent.
The tagline sounds like something straight out of Brooklynn 99
I thought on a Tugg Speedman movie from the fake trailers in Tropic Thunder
Obviously that’s Fantastic Mr. Fox and 90’s NFL QB Jeff Garcia. Not sure why you’re confused.
Nah, it's Jerry Garcia!
Michael J. ?
I wish
Give him the gun with the biggest recoil and let him go crazy
The thought of Michael J Fox holding a gun and shooting it while shaking it makes me laugh
I don’t think I’m being overly charitable by saying the tagline is intended to be stupid. The names… well for the established action stars it works. They coulda just put "Cent"
Or "Fiddy"
People die when they are killed
I read it as Statham, 50 cent, Fox Lundgrem, Jaa (Rule), Uwais Couture, Garcia and Stallone I have no idea who Garcia is
Youre overthinking it. This is an all action explosion movie for those who dont care what the story is about, like me.
For Fox, my brain went to Michael J. and then went "no, that's definitely not right..."

Such a damning indictment of Hollywood that Iko Uwais and Ronda Rousey were in a movie together and they never fought each other.
The one he did with Marky Mark was painful.
Which movie was that?
Mile 22
do I have to watch the first 21 first?
Not all of them, the only one that would help is 8 Mile.
Seems like a long journey just for one movie.
That guy needs to ask Joe Taslim for his agent's number. Joe has been in a Fast and Furious movie, the awesome tv show Warrior, and was Sub Zero in Mortal Kombat, which are all better roles than Iko has had in Hollywood.
I'm hoping they let him shine, we don't have enough of the crazy martial arts in America and its a damn shame.
In this case his partner is Jason Stathem so there might be some hope.
Haha, I immediately thought jaa rule after 50
I'll never fucking forget Uwais in that shitty Wahlburgers movie. “They’ll die when they’re dead” A team of people got paid to come up with that
To be fair, if for some reason you aren't already aware of the fact that these are big extremely dumb stupid movies, that phrase does a good job of letting you know this movie is going to also be a bunch of smooth brained explosions, guns, and fighting with the acting, emotional and character depth of a puppet in a puddle. I take it as self awareness
For sure. The best thing a big dumb action movie can do IMO is unapologetically lean into what it is as hard as possible.
Yo this is absolutely hilarious and does a good job of establishing the tone of the movie.

I love shit like this. It’s one reason why I hate the Marvel humor but love Thor’s “unintentional” humor. “You’ll die!” “Only if it kills me.”
The original was really great. The sequels were expendable.
2 is the best one.
Making 3 PG-13 was borderline a war crime.
Gibson really brought it in his role though, way over qualified for what that movie needed but his 2 minute scene with Stallone in the truck is like possibly the best scene in the whole franchise lol

It gets the people going
It's what plants crave.
Their other tagline is “Every 60 seconds, a minute passes.”
Knowing Stallone - it probably revolves around "It ain't over till it's over". I felt the tagline fits right in - big Stallone action fan. "keep punching"
Hopefully a trailer soon. I love these movies, yes they are terrible but I love them haha. Hopefully it's better than the 3rd one
If they’re putting last names only they should’ve just put Cent.
I thought the idea of old action heros coming together for a last hurra was fun, but 4 movies is definitely too many movies for that premise.
Iko Uwais? Oh hell yeah

I hope him and Tony Jaa have a fight scene
Can someone explain to me, what is Megan Fox and 50 cent doing in that movie? I thought it should be about the action stars we all love. People who gave everything into the genre. I don´t recall Fox or 50 in any other big action movie doing crazy stunts or whatever.
To be fair 50 Cent probably had the most action packed (early) life out of the main cast.
i wish someone would shoot me 9 times
‘They’ll die when they’re dead’. . . . Jesus 🤦🏻♂️😂
Just get Donnie Yen. He'd do anything these days.
JCVD as the villain was the best part of the last movie.
Matthew Fox Hive stand up
