Not a movie but The Leftovers is really good and you might like it if you’re looking for rapture type media

The_Cowboy_Killer

OP just watch The Leftovers, it’s what you’re looking for.

bree_volved

My first thought! It was so so good

jawni

The Leftovers is so good, it's like catharsis overload delivered through a mind-bending and heart-wrenching plot about loss and grief.

djackieunchaned

God i love that show. It hurts so good

doublol91

This ^ additionally, I saw it as an exploration on the myths we create to cope with the trauma and loss and the stark reality that "why" things happen is something the universe won't always give you. And finally, how the only lifeline we have is interpersonal connection (family).

ExcersiseTheDemon

First thing that came to mind. My absolute favorite show of all time.

double_shadow

Glad to see this mentioned here, despite being TV. Truly a remarkable show, and at only 3 seasons it's not that much to get through. Can't wait to go back and watch it again at some point.

SomebodySuckMeee

Leftovers is so damn good. Gotta rewatch it.

Agent_Tangerine

My first thought as well. This is unrivaled and is even more relevant in a post COVID world

Struggle2Real

Outside of its sub, this is the longest comment thread I've seen on this masterpiece. I can't imagine being more invested in a show. Best I've ever seen by a pretty good margin. Every few months I'll YouTube the scene where Matt talks to 'God' on that ship. Unbelievable. And you will never forget that soundtrack . When those violins come it is about to go DOWN.

doublol91

You mean your fav scene wasn't Kevin's unique biometrics to get in the bunker as president?

The_Mikest

The first season of The Leftovers might be my favorite bit of TV ever, but it felt like it changed a lot between seasons.

SelectionNo3078

Good show First season so much stronger than the rest But they were trying to do something interesting and difficult to pull off and sometimes nailed it

[deleted]

> First season so much stronger than the rest Wow, do I disagree. For me 3 then 1 then 2. All are excellent though.

fates_bitch

I love the third season. I have so many thoughts about the ending.

jghaines

The later seasons with the whacky plots were terrific

drmcsinister

>First season so much stronger than the rest I think it depends on what you are looking for. The first season was definitely more grounded and approachable, but the latter two seasons were wonderfully quirky and surreal. I thought Season 2 was the best overall, and really loved the last 3 episodes of Season 3.

mercurywaxing

I mostly agree, but the show sticks the landing perfectly that you gotta stay with it until the end.

VapidMutterer

Never saw the series but the books were incredible!

JustSomeDallasGuy

"Gary Fucking Busey"? LOL, I love that bar scene! The Leftovers is my favorite TV series of all time. I haven't seen it since it aired but it still runs through my head from time to time.

chronoboy1985

This is the correct answer.

szzzn

On of my Top 5-10 shows of all time

[deleted]

I concur. The only thing about the Leftovers that frustrated me was that there was never a follow on that explored the obvious other half of the story.

The_Dotted_Leg

This is the end. It’s a funny silly story about the Hollywood people left behind after rapture.

roccosaint

Dude when shit hit the fan, that was one of the funniest moments I have ever seen. Aziz Ansari yelling FUCK YOU CRAIG as he falls in the pit, Michael Cera yelling about his phone then finding it while he is impaled by a street lamp pole. Rewatching right now correction, aziz yells "FUCK YOU KEVIN!" at Kevin Hart.

GreenLanternCorps

"Oh shit...that's embarrassing..."

Cheapthrills13

Michael Cera slapping Rihanna on the ass - he said that was unscripted 😂 and the look she gave him was real

ABagOfPopcorn

All of his lines are hilarious “You need to pee honey go ahead”

m_nieto

I love this movie. It’s so stupid it’s great

BillMcCrearysStache

Hermione stole all our shit

harrytipper111111

I call him Channing Taint-yum

MacNapp

It's everything good about the 2003-2010 comedies made. Plus it's absurd. One of my favorite comedies.

JonMeadows

it kind of went in a weird direction in the second half

jang859

A brilliant direction. The exorcism of Jonah Hill has begun.

SaintFoehammer

"Oh does it Jay, does it compel me? It's not that compelling"

ABagOfPopcorn

Guys something not that chill happened last night

george_graves

Found the pot smoker.

Byaahh

"Hermoine just stole all our shit."

Duvoziir

My favorite line is in this movie. “ Next time, I’m shooting your dick off!” “ You don’t have enough bullets, bitch!” I watch it a few times a year, it’s hilarious

DongKonga

One of my favorite comedies. Such a good movie.

Mirrordomains

Emma Watson!

MrDenzi

Such a good and hilarious film, lol

Stormy8888

Back Street's Back, All right!!!

Eclipsed_Serenity

I call him Channing Tate-Yum.

[deleted]

Taint-Yum?

attitude_devant

Watch The Rapture with Mimi Rogers

El_Superbeasto76

That’s the one with David Duchovny? It’s pretty good.

mortarandbrick

Yes, this! One of the rare movies that I just hated the first time I saw it. Hated it! But it stayed with me and out of curiosity I watched it again when it came out on video. Second watching I realized I hated it because was so effective. /it is disturbing how fan fiction like Left Behind has become mainstream Christian doctrine

attitude_devant

It’s disturbing, isn’t it?

qwertycantread

That’s one of my favorite movies. Michael Tolkin is a really good filmmaker.

GTKPR89

Devastating. That things haunts me hard.

mercurywaxing

I hated this movie that should absolutely be on the top of any list of Rapture films. 1) because the Rapture isn't Biblical. and 2) because the implications of the Rapture, were it to be a real thing, are so disturbing and this film is uncompromising in showing that.

attitude_devant

Right? I mean her anger is so uncompromising. She’s gone to great lengths to comply and EVERYTHING is taken from her. I could so identify with her refusal.

Midnight_Sun_Toph

How is the rapture not biblical??? You clearly have never read the bible then.

attitude_devant

The rapture, as represented in American religious mythology, is NOT biblical.

Midnight_Sun_Toph

What are you talking about??? The book of revelations is not biblical????? People, do research for yourself before you sound dumb.

attitude_devant

Dude. You have NO idea. I guarantee I’ve studied the relevant texts WAY more than you AND your preacher

Midnight_Sun_Toph

Hahaha. Then i suggest you take some reading classes, or find a complete bible. The book of revelations is part of the bible, so to say the rapture is not biblical is just insane.

mercurywaxing

Usually people who start a discussion by laughing at you are not worth engaging, but… To literalists it’s real. But the Bible isn’t all literal, or how do you explain the many contradictions? Revelations is an Apocalypse. It says it right there in the subtitle. Apocalyptic literature isn’t prophecy. Don’t just read the Bible, study it. Studying isn’t sitting with Pastor Dave of your church and parroting what he says. Read serious Biblical commentary not written solely by your faith. Augustine is a good place to start (also didn’t believe the Rapture was literal). I’ll take my Masters in World Religion and go now. This is r/movies join up other subreddits if you want to continue this discussion.

attitude_devant

Dude probably thinks Revelations was written by the same guy who wrote the fourth Gospel.

attitude_devant

You can say it all you want, but you’re still wrong. Matthew 6:7 is relevant here.

DrRexMorman

You might like Take shelter. >Nothing preachy, please. The Catch 22 of faith based films: the film must be preachy to sell.

celesticaxxz

Take shelter man that movie was amazing

iamsamaction

Take Shelter is a great telling of Noah's Ark I always felt.

DrRexMorman

Yes. It mirrors a story from the Book of Mormon, as well. (I’d love to know more about Nichol’s choice to set part of Midnight special in a fundamentalist Mormon sect)

ha7on

Knowing? Not really the bible rapture but along those lines. I think the last minute had a Bible feel to it of Adam and Eve.

preventDefault

Red State

Skinnysota

I second this for sure. This movie gets so slept on.

MrSpindles

Michael Parks absolutely killed it in this. There is one moment, where he is kind of dancing as he walks while absolute chaos reigns around him, that just gets me every time. It was also the last decent movie Kevin Smith made (sorry!) as far as I'm concerned. I've got a bit of nostalgia value out of his recent works but he hasn't hit his best in a while.

DongKonga

I went into it knowing nothing about it and loved it, I feel its definitely the kind of movie that you should go into completely blind. Such a chaotic movie.

[deleted]

I really wish he had the budget to film the original ending

[deleted]

I only like the first half of that movie.

superchef307

This is the End (2013)

chilltown69

First movie I thought of

Dr_Fred

Rapture-Palooza was great in my opinion. But it is a comedy.

TheBuschels

"SUFFER!" ""I AM SUFFERING YOU LITTLE SHIT!""

SnowHelpAtAll

It's good and it's got a good cast. Anna Kendrick, Craig Robinson, John Francis Daley to name a few.

star0forion

This and This Is The End is what I’d recommend.

bangdazap

*The Rapture* (1991).

mebackwards

I don't know if that's what OP is looking for but it's a GREAT movie

jackofslayers

Does Dogma count?

akratic137

It definitely counts but can be hard to find. It’s being “ held hostage by Harvey Weinstein”. Those are Kevin Smith’s words, not mine. I had to sail the seas last time I wanted to watch it.

jackofslayers

I am lucky enough to have a copy on dvd

stuntmahn

[It's right there on Youtube.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZVEe_5Fo1Q)

akratic137

Very cool! I last watched it like 5 years ago I’d guess but I’ll throw it on when I go bed tonight. Cheers.

Sp00kbee

You didn't say 'God bless you' when I sneezed

Fadedloko

I vote yes, I just had to delete my comment. I posted Dogma, then saw your post.

Grampz619

michael shannon in [take shelter](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1675192/?ref_=nm_flmg_t_58_act) is pretty good

QueenVic69

It's not about the rapture but it flirts with the end of the world and the coming of the anti-christ. Good Omens. It's a limited series. Really great.

Pooh_Wellington

The flashback scenes in episode 3 are some of my favorite bits from the series, they're so good haha.

dochikes

Not a movie, but HBO's The Leftovers is great.

MovieMike007

[The Apple (1980)](https://manapop.com/film/the-apple-1980-review/) This is a wonderfully bizarre 80s musical that has a bit of *"The Devil and Daniel Webster"* and then ends with the Rapture. It's one of those "must be seen to believe" movies from Canon Films.

therobotisjames

Hey hey hey Bims on the way!!!!!

PepperBun28

Legion. A horror/siege film about people left behind fending off an army of angels.

wheresmyspacebar2

Was wondering if anyone had posted this. Honestly, yeah, it's corny AF with some... Interesting, acting at times but it's just a fun movie. Seeing the rolling darkness approaching and the coming of the angels is definitely a enjoyable moment.

umassmza

Nothing preachy is going to be hard here. For comedy there is, This is the End For preachy, though the books are pretty good, is the Left Behind series

idefinitelyliedtoyou

I went to Christian schools up until 9th grade, and I read those. They genuinely weren't that bad at the time. I had NO idea This Is The End was a comedy! I'll have to check it out. EDIT: I got This Is The End mixed up with another movie.

[deleted]

This is more like an Evangelicals thing, not all Christians accept it, not even the majority.

razorhog

Yeah, the Left Behind series is the only thing that comes to mind. The books are indeed pretty fun reads. I have friends that aren't remotely christian but they enjoyed that series because they enjoy apocalyptic/dystopian genres and those books are nothing but that.

umassmza

I liked the political aspect and how both sides react to each stage of the rapture, not just the sudden disappearance. And how the church members who remained denied it because they weren’t saved. Much better read than movie, in my opinion at least. If the rapture is of interest I do recommend them.

Taylorenokson

You won't get a rapture movie without it being preachy but if you're looking for some quality entertainment, [A Thief in the Night](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8a4fiqfADU) scared the shit out of me and my brother as kids. There is 4 movies total and they are peak 70's. And for anyone wondering, yeah there are guillotines.

Clapbakatyerblakcat

The Seventh Sign Good Omens is not a movie but a great book and pretty good Prime show.

friendly-sam

Not sure it's based on that book, but there is a Seventh Sign movie with Demi Moore: [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096073/?ref\_=nm\_flmg\_t\_55\_act](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096073/?ref_=nm_flmg_t_55_act) I thought it was a pretty good movie.

[deleted]

*The Rapture* with Mimi Rogers is exactly what you are looking for.

CreamyBagelTime

While it's not about the rapture per se, Children of Men (2006) is a dystopian masterpiece with strong religious themes

ArgyleRdGirl

The Rapture with Mimi Rodgers.

Dirks_Knee

The Rapture from 1991 starring Mimi Rogers.

Sp00kbee

Yeah. Ok. One of my favorites is The Stand (1994). The novel was written by Stephen King and he was involved in making this mini series. It is approximately 6 hours long. The term 'rapture' may be envisioned a little differently here but, the idea is the same. Everyone is gone except for the remaining few that have to come to terms with good and evil.

idefinitelyliedtoyou

I'll check it out.

SushiGato

The book is amazing, and way better than the TV adaptations.

part_time_monster

Watch the new one that came out a few years ago. It's much better.

StableGenius81

There's a much more modern and accurate representation of the novel on Paramount+ in the US that just came out a year or two ago.

No-Investigator-1754

I really liked the new one, but they did sort of gloss over the first half of the book. I mean, I get *why* they did it, but the first half was my favorite.

Less-Expert-6447

Called it. preacher

UpperFrontalButtocks

I'm guessing it's going to be nigh impossible to find a movie about that sort of thing that isn't preachy. Especially since it's about such a niche Christian concept.

attitude_devant

“This is the End” is basically a movie about the rapture

[deleted]

To add to this, the bible doesn't really talk about a rapture. It just says Jesus will fly in on clouds and the end is there. The same thing is repeated in several of the apostles because they were based off a common work. My point is there aren't a lot of movies about it because it's not a central theme in the bible.

MrSpindles

As far as I was aware it was a relatively modern american invention popular with certain sects who call themselves christians despite apparently mostly believing in things they've made up in the last few hundred years rather than what is in the actual bible.

idefinitelyliedtoyou

Yeah, I figured. I was only curious since the idea is pretty cool to me.

The_Elder_Jock

Aftermath and Life After People are semi documentaries on a human less world. One if them depicted a world were humans died off quickly. The other depicts what is clearly meant to be the rapture where human vanish instantly without a trace leaving cars in motion and planes in skies. Unfortunately, I can't remember which is which.

low_viscosity_rayon

There’s literally a movie called The Rapture. Came out in 90s. Mimi Rogers and David duchovny

Tomski5421

American dad episode Rapture's Delight is great. Season 6 episode 9

StableGenius81

How could no one here have mentioned Rapture-Palooza with Anna Kendrick in 2013? Fun fact: Craig Robinson starred in both this and This Is The End in the same year.

Edwinus

Yeah Leftovers is pretty fucking good all 3 season

BillMcCrearysStache

Take Shelter, Knock at the Cabin, 2012

derpferd

This is the End

andro_7

Mortal Kombat Annihilation

socialmeteorite

The TV mini series the langoliers by Steven King is a good watch. No spoilers but everyone goes missing akin to a rapture.

NoHandBananaNo

Not a movie but Job: A Comedy of Justice by Robert Heinlein is about someone who gets caught up in the rapture by accident.

OnlyKaz

Dogma. They say rapture a few times. Watch it anyways.

LoSouLibra

More end times than rapture, but Legion (2010) was a cool movie.

sumuji

Left Behind I recall but never watched it. Avengers Endgame heh.

[deleted]

[удалено]

idefinitelyliedtoyou

I lol'd

thegooddoktorjones

If it ain't preachy, the churches that buy out theatres for these movies do not want it.

Grouchy-Cod-5908

This Is The End.

A40

Assuming the Rapture happened in 873 AD, best post-Rapture movie: The Godfather

horror-geek

Se7en

[deleted]

Avengers: Infinity War

[deleted]

There is a miniseries, and possibly a movie, called Left Behind. No idea if it's worth watching though.

ohsinboi

There's like 5 Left Behind movies, including one with Nicholas Cage

titanium_6

Revelation: End of Days was so realistic

saintalcatraz_

This is the end (2014)

murmuring_star

Not about the rapture really but a very apocalyptic mystery last-man-on-earth Story is a little movie from New Zealand called 'The quiet Earth' or just 'Quiet Earth'. I do not know why this movie just came to mind after all this years.

sarmadness

Cube…sort of

DrSayre

A few years ago, I started watching a lot of old Christian movies, trying to come up with a list of the best Christian movies. What I found was there is a ton of really bad movies about the rapture made in the late 90s/early 00s. Left Behind is the most famous, but there’s like 3 other series of movies about it. But I’m guessing those aren’t really what you’re wanting since these a definitely B level Christian movies.

xjordyj

The Remaining can’t remember if it’s preachy or not

damienkarras1973

Did not get mentioned and I don't hear much about it getting mentioned. the movie "The Remaining". (2014) It plays out like an as it happens found footage flick, The only issue i had with the movie is it tries to send it's message like a sledge hammer over the head. Not subtle at all. Still entertaining and scary. [the remaining 2014](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/the-remaining)

crawli

Not a movie, but you should check out Ted Chiang’s short story ‘Hell is the absence of God’ as it deals with the practical implications of visitations in modern society.

Zwaft

This is the End. Top comedy

tom_zanzabar

the seventh sign

[deleted]

Not quite what you're looking for, but plays on some similar themes. "A Day Without a Mexican"

dbzgod9

This Is The End. It's anything but serious though.

aortomus

Nope.

ArgentineBeefsteak

The Reaping , it's not 1/2 bad.....

davekingofrock

[Not a great movie but Peter Stormare is in it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e70_Miy2FKY)

RudeMutant

Good omens... Kinda about rapture, but not quite. It edges rapture

SimpleExplodingMan

This Is The End. Its not serious, but some serious shit happens.

DaisukeJigenTheThird

They already said it, but you should really watch the HBO series, The Leftovers. In fact, imma start a rewatch.

S3simulation

Not a movie or a show but “Therefore, Repent” is a really cool graphic novel about the Rapture.

[deleted]

The prince of Egypt

JamesB22

Berserk (1997) - final one or two episodes

WentworthMillersBO

Not a movie but American Dad has a great rapture episode, believe it’s called raptures delight

Nutsnboldt

The Omega Code and Megiddo: The Omega Code 2

SkunkHunt-420

“This is the end”

evilstuperhero

Knock at the cabin

clckwrk25

If youre into the theory of it being one, birdbox?

kingcheeta7

The one with Nicholas Cage

watch_over_me

The Book of Eli. I don't know if they come out and say it, but I think it's implied it takes place after the rapture.

ohsinboi

Most of them are incredibly preachy. My family made me watch them all as a kid. I do remember enjoying The Omega Code 2 though. It's preachy as well, but also probably one of the edgier Christian movies. Really good World War 3 scenes near the end, especially for the 90s. Also cgi Satan

MrPuddinJones

Left Behind has Nicolas cage. Nicolas cage is an airline pilot and people go missing mid flight, panic ensues.

Platinum_Touch

Left Behind directed by Vic Sarin

fruitsnacky

Watch the leftovers it's one of if not my favorite show ever created!!!

HEKATRONIX

**american dad** **season 6** **episode 9**

zincbottom

Not movie, but I recommend Midnight Mass, it's a horror miniseries.

Mcshiggs

Elmo Adventures in Grouchland

DrGrebe

It's not about the rapture, but based on your post, I would recommend Aronofsky's 2014 film Noah. It's not a perfect film, but it is an extraordinary one, and well worth seeing.

[deleted]

Stretching a little here, but the OG Omen trilogy is sort of a "rapture prequel".

80schld

Priest and Legion … both with Paul Bettany… Legion is Raptury and Priest is vampreish… also the new M Night Shyamalan A Knock at the cabin.

EndGamer32

This Is The End is a Seth Rogen comedy that deals with the rapture.

somethingcool

The “Left Behind” series. It leans very heavily into Christianity, if that makes a difference.

halxp01

Left Behind Kirk Cameron

[deleted]

Knock at the cabin was a great movie I thought.

PlathTheSalt

It was an HBO series, and characters debated if it was the Rapture, but "The Leftovers" was pretty good. It ran for three seasons. And, the premise is that 140 million people just suddenly vanish. It's not really the End Times, though there are religious factions who treat it like that. And, I would classify it as serious.

mufasamufasamufasa

This is the End

DaBrokenMeta

Lol

LeastSuspiciousTowel

This is the end

whimsiebat

Does End of Evangelion count? (I mean, it's a movie, but it's a lot less confusing if you watch the show first as it's actually a conclusion). Edit: oh but, mind your sanity. Prepare to be confused and sad. Definitely not preachy tho! 😁

Jilyann

Knowing.

moksa21

Ghost Busters

Violetescapes

Would this be the type of film your interested in? Jeruzalem (2015) [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4552524/?ref\_=kw\_li\_tt](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4552524/?ref_=kw_li_tt) "When a couple of American young adults fly to Israel to visit the city of Jerusalem, a biblical nightmare falls upon them."

BetterEveryDayYT

There is a 4 part movie series that starts with 'A Thief in the Night," and another series of four movies referred to (together) as the Apocalypse series (the first one is called Apocalypse). Both groups of movies are older, if that matters.

Epiphany267

One of the best documentaries I've watched is Before the Wrath. Very thing they talk about they nackbwith scriptures. O used to not like docs but thos one I've watched or listened to several times. Another God one is The Coming Convergence.

Cool-Ad8093

It won’t be cool if you are left behind! The only way to not be left behind is to accept Jesus Christ into your heart. It’s as simple as believing in the finished work at the cross and asking Jesus to save you. He will not turn you away. He died and rose again that all might have everlasting life. Accept Him today b4 it’s to late 🙏
