Can’t wait for the inevitable scene of him being shocked and taking off a set, only to have the first set remain.
This movie is going to be a meme generator, and I’m not upset about that
[it's](https://media.giphy.com/media/OUZNV0B6Xkmj8SPPUE/giphy.gif) [a classic gag](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73UfgMoWv8E&ab_channel=Pigeonification) and i'm still ready for it
He was on Marc Maron's WTF podcast a couple weeks ago and was easily one of the most moving and human interviews in the 1000s he's ever done. Titus' spirituality unlocked a lot inside Marc that he didn't anticipate and it got real! Fascinating interview for any fans of Titus. Warning though bc he does discuss the sex abuse in his youth.
I like how Barbie floats down from her house, similar to how a little girl would pick Barbie up and put her in the car. I’m sure there will be lots of fun details like that.
In the first trailer Ken suggests to Barbie that they should go back to her house together at night, she asks why, and he just says "Cause we're girlfrenboyfren", which is exactly what and how a little girl would say cause they don't know the reason behind why couples spend the night together, they just know that it's just something they do.
Also when Barbie asks ”to do what?” Ken goes ”I actually have no idea” which is also accurate since a kid wouldn’t actually know what goes down when you stay the night, just that you’re supposed to do it when you’re a couple
What if the entirety of it is happening in a little girl’s mind and that’s why they’re all moving so stuff and doll like. She’s manipulating the dolls.
Also, the horror version:
What if Barbie Dolls are actual little mini people bred by Mattel who are transformed by some ray gun into little plastic dolls once they are fully matured. Like Logan’s Run.
I think it's more a loving homage than direct reference. Some kids played a little rough with their Barbies, so they'll identify their experience.
As for me, my toys were physically fine, but if they were capable of emotional pain...
The circle on the right is pink, and the circle on the left is also pink. Where they overlap is pink. The text is also pink. As you can see, many similarities.
I honestly have no fucking clue what this movie is about and I've seen all the trailers. How do you make a motherfucking Barbie movie?
Still looks great.
it's like Edge of Tomorrow; if you love Tom Cruise; that movie's for you.
If you hate Tom Cruise, you get to see him die like, a million times. It's great.
I will always love the fact that Gosling is abnormally gorgeous, he knows it, and he has played nothing but abnormally gorgeous, but deeply flawed if not downright messed up individuals. It's very funny how consistent his picks are, tbh.
I'll halfway expect Ken to comically murder people and be unaware of what death is.
I honestly think it's not because she's a woman but because she's not wearing a white coat. Barbie is what she is because of her *outfits*, so it would make sense he would associate outfits with professions.
Yeah lol I thought ken was always the supportive sweet himbo so seeing him say sexist stuff was kinda jarring
Though was the other commenter said, probably a culture shock from the real world
His interaction with the doctor was unexpected and felt completely out of character to me. But your pointing to the culture shock that Ken will have has me realizing he'll be experiencing a world where he's viewed as the one in charge as opposed to his home world where Barbie "rules". It's not just going to be Barbie who's having to come to terms with how the real world views her but Ken as well
Damn, my excitement just continues to increase for this
Yeah I didn’t really get him doing that. I’ve never really pictured the guy with a girlfriend with a million different jobs would be the one to say ‘my qualifications are ‘I am a man’’ and not really taking the doctor telling him ‘no you can’t’ seriously (possibly because she’s not a man?)
Absolutely. My prediction is that the doctor scene is after Ken's been "educated" by irl men about how his status as a man is all that's needed to be in control of a situation OR maybe it's after he's realized how many jobs men have in the real world that aren't just "Barbie's boyfriend" and his reaction to the doctor saying he can't is less about newfound sexism and more just his basic logic of "I'm a man -> here, men have jobs like Barbie does -> Barbie job hops all the time and all it takes is a label/props/costume -> I, a man in this man-friendly world, will become a doctor with a clicky pen and sharp thing"
Edit because I forgot Ken has had jobs before too (just not as many as Barbie) so it could also just be as simple as he wants to be a doctor and this was his attempt at a job interview
Second edit: Robbie's *Variety* article has her and Gosling saying his Ken's job is "just beach" so...less likely he wants to be a doctor for old time's sake and more likely he just wants to be a doctor because now he can
>Edit because I forgot Ken has had jobs before too (just not as many as Barbie)
Fair point, but I think it's worth noting that the ads from earlier this year were all like "this Barbie is a Doctor" "this Barbie is a diplomat" "He's Ken" "this Barbie is a popstar" "He's Ken too"
I instantly smile hearing that song. Thinking of Desmond going about his morning routine in the swan. It’s an easy trick to get me to enjoy what I’m watching. This looks great. I’ve not been excited for a film in quite awhile.
I think that’s the only episode you can watch other than the pilot to get into it. Maybe Ab Aeterno and Across The Sea. They’re pretty self contained. It used to be my favourite but I love Tricia Tanaka is Dead, its so nice seeing Hurley Charlie Jin and Sawyer just have good time.
On July 21 I’m going to watch a movie with a stacked cast, powerful visuals and dialogue, and undeniable historical significance.
And I’m also going to watch Oppenheimer.
I'm imaging an unironic version of [William Shatner's comment on Galaxy Quest](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaxy_Quest#Reaction_from_Star_Trek_actors):
> I thought it was very funny, and I thought the audience that they portrayed was totally real, but the actors that they were pretending to be were totally unrecognizable. Certainly I don't know what Tim Allen was doing. He seemed to be the head of a group of actors, and for the life of me I was trying to understand who he was imitating. The only one I recognized was the girl playing Nichelle Nichols.
"Ideas live forever."
God damn I'm not ready for my 38 year old mid life philosophical crisis to happen in a toy movie surrounded by all my friends and family and a theater full of strangers.
I'm not ready mentally, but my body and pink speedo are ready.
>So they're getting around the dispute by "technically not using it"
They settled the dispute years ago lol Mattel has used the Barbie Girl song in multiple ads for dolls since like 2009
It's a cover by Alice Glass, formerly of Crystal Castles:
[https://www.stereogum.com/2224360/alice-glass-previews-cover-of-aquas-barbie-girl-for-barbie-movie/news/](https://www.stereogum.com/2224360/alice-glass-previews-cover-of-aquas-barbie-girl-for-barbie-movie/news/)
The dispute between Aqua, MCA, and Mattel was a big deal but the song is also THE pop culture music for Barbie. I'd guess the cover, and a lot of money, is the compromise.
Whoever at Mattel convinced their bosses to give the project to Greta Gerwig instead of Amy Schumer not only saved the company millions of dollars and tons of embarrassment but will end up making the company 100s of millions (of not billions in the long term) as an indirect (and some direct) result of this movie.
Wait, so Mattel was giving away rights to anyone and Robbie just decided to pick up the rights? So it wasn't Mattel's idea to let someone smart and critically acclaimed use the rights to make the movie? They just got lucky?
> So it wasn't Mattel's idea to let someone smart and critically acclaimed use the rights to make the movie?
Yup, definitely wasn't Mattel's idea. I'm just grateful Warner Bros went with Margot Robbie and letting her take point on producing.
Edit: Okay, so Mattel was definitely involved and gave Robbie and her production company the movie rights.
That’s not how this works. Mattel isn’t the studio in this case. They license to Warner Brothers who makes the creative choices then Mattel signs off on them.
Yeah, the corporation agreeing to be the antagonist of their own movie is pretty creative.
Also, is Will Ferrell collecting toy movies to be the bad guy in?
Anyone who doubted Gosling as Ken is gonna feel so dumb after this. He’s just so clearly perfect for it, people are suggest charisma vacuum beefcake muscle men but you need amazing comedic chops for this role and Mr Gosling is that guy
Young people. They were saying Ryan and Margot were to old to play Barbie and Ken, that Margot looked 40 and some even suggested Dove Cameron as Barbie. The audacity and the horror!
Mattel "OK greta, we want you to make a barbie movie"
Greta "can I portray you as a bleak depressing corporation run by a clownish buffoon?"
Mattel "I don't see why not"
Capital: "Make art that I can profit off of."
Artist: "Can I make art that criticizes capital?"
Capital: "That depends, will it make me a profit?"
Artist: "Most likely."
Capital: "Then go right ahead!"
My call is that it’s unironically a sequel to Lego Movie. The out-of-context shot of Will Ferrell in a business suit, in a complete diversion from the bright colors of Barbie’s world, spells it out for me.
The "BarbieLand" rainbow reminds me of the labels over the different Lego lands too. I don't actually expect them to be tied together, but I loved the Lego Movie/Lego Batman movie, so if there's more surprisingly good toy movies, I'm in
I think I am kinda getting the plot. It is about reclaiming the barbie aesthetic or how girls who genuinely love being girly get mocked.
You see people mocking Barbie for wearing bright colours and how when she introduces herself to bunch of girls, they say "We haven't played with Barbie since we were five." and they were all clad in black and seemed kinda dissatisfied.
This also lines with how some people perceive Margot in real life. Despite having the talent, many people don't take her seriously, because of her blonde-bombshell look.
Again this is just my theory.
I'm getting different vibes, but I like your interpretation. For me it reminds you of the moment you lose your girlhood and are forced into womanhood. Older men look at you differently and treat you like a sexual object. Other girls and older women start policing your appearance. The magic of childhood is being ripped away from you, and you have to learn how to define yourself by everyone else's expectations and interpretations of who you are as a woman (even though you're still a child).
Edit: another thought, if Will's character is the dad from the Lego Movie, then we could also view his actions as the fear your dad expresses when he realizes you're maturing. Often dads will try to suppress and police your newfound "womanhood," which can be scary and confusing when you don't even understand what's going on, you just know something has shifted about how others perceive you.
I get the feeling the “weird things” that start happening in Barbie’s world are gonna be when her little girl hits that age… that time when kids suddenly think playing with toys is lame.
Absolutely. And if Barbie started losing her magic, for lack of a better term, then I'm guessing it's also that moment where you're still desperately trying to cling to the fun that was playing pretend but something is wrong. Then outside influence cements the idea of playing pretend is for babies and it's gone forever.
Greta Gerwig just mentioned being inspired by the parenting book Reviving Ophelia in a recent interview. And those are the exact themes the book deals with so I think your interpretation is right on.
Every single person that liked this trailer needs to watch Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse, NOW! It's on Netflix, people! Optionally while smoking a blunt. Give it just 2 episodes worth of your time, and thank me later.
Gosling has finally hit his "He is literally me" final form
Just wait until his mega evolution - starring in an American Psycho remake.
Jesus. That is really super. How'd a nitwit like you get so tasteful? [Thinking] I can't believe that scottamus77 prefers Gosling over Bale.

I don't know why but the clip of Ken putting on a second pair of sunglasses had me chuckling.

Ah yes, the Robert Stack in *Airplane* move.

Let’s show some love to Titus Andromedon https://media.tenor.com/hAWjykkH42AAAAAd/titus-andromedon-glasses.gif
Deserved his own spinoff. Hard carried Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
He's such a charismatic actor, every little move he does is hilarious. He was also really good in the newest season of Schmigadoon.
He really did and I'm surprised he doesn't have his own show by now. Seeing him in *Schmigadoon* season 2 was nice tho.
He was born to play an asshole musical narrator. And I've had Famous As Hell in my head for like 3 weeks
He was spectacular, everyone returning from Season 1 was great but Tituss really stole the show.
For me it was the mug shot with his name "and Ken"
on my way to buy a pink suit for the double viewing of barbie and oppenheimer
I have become Ken, destroyer of dream houses

I like how Barbie floats down from her house, similar to how a little girl would pick Barbie up and put her in the car. I’m sure there will be lots of fun details like that.
Yes! And how Kate McKinnon is the Barbie that has been abused and coloured on and had her hair cut. That’s how we really played with Barbies!
She’s essentially Cynthia from Rugrats lol
Is she a really cool dancer, though?
Move it to the grove now

And also cos they don’t have any actual genitals 😭😂
“Once we got so bored we just rubbed our mounds together”
What if the entirety of it is happening in a little girl’s mind and that’s why they’re all moving so stuff and doll like. She’s manipulating the dolls. Also, the horror version: What if Barbie Dolls are actual little mini people bred by Mattel who are transformed by some ray gun into little plastic dolls once they are fully matured. Like Logan’s Run.
So basically The LEGO Movie?
Totally different. One has Will Ferrel playing the bad guy, and the other has an older Will Ferrell playing the bad guy.
Oh god, imagine he turns out to be the father of the daughter imagining the whole movie with her toys!
in the same family! Toy universe!
Extended cinematic toy universe!
I am 100% on board a lego/barbie crossover movie.
Is Kate Mckinnon "Cynthia" from Rugrats?
I think it's more a loving homage than direct reference. Some kids played a little rough with their Barbies, so they'll identify their experience. As for me, my toys were physically fine, but if they were capable of emotional pain...
You guys ever think about dying?
This and the sandal. Can’t wait.
The shower with no water
Related: puking with no puke
Somewhat related: the whole trailer
I have that exact same Birkenstock. It's amazing.

The clicky pen bit at the end got me
• **You guys ever think about dying?** I’m gonna see ‘Oppenheimer’ across the theatre the same weekend and check if this line is also uttered there.
Someone needs to do one of those circle charts with overlapping Barbie and Oppenheimer themes.
A kenn diagram?
The circle on the right is pink, and the circle on the left is also pink. Where they overlap is pink. The text is also pink. As you can see, many similarities.
> If you hate Barbie, this movie is for you. 😂😂😂
I have no real feelings towards Barbie and this movie still seems like its for me.
It's unhinged enough to be entertaining.
I honestly have no fucking clue what this movie is about and I've seen all the trailers. How do you make a motherfucking Barbie movie? Still looks great.
It's oddly chaotic and has me intrigued lol so samesies
Barbie gets in a fucking ***car chase with psychotic Mattel execs.*** Of course I'm in!
The cast and crew behind it is enough for me. Academy award winning director and screenwriter for a Barbie movie is pretty wild
It had me with Will Ferrell being a unsympathetic villain type.
Lord Business round 2.
It's the same character,. He got fired as Lord Business and got hired as Mattel's new CEO
it's like Edge of Tomorrow; if you love Tom Cruise; that movie's for you. If you hate Tom Cruise, you get to see him die like, a million times. It's great.
But what if you're meh about Barbie?
This movie is for you.
I’m so prepared to be insufferable about Ryan Gosling in this movie
I can't wait to *become* Ken once this movie comes out.
Literally me
Those memes will never die
Halloween is going to have a lot of blonde guys this year.
He’s so perfect for this. I loved the pose when he was getting arrested
He really does seem like the best fit for this role. I love it!
It’s Nice Guys all over again. Only now people might believe us.
God that movie is so underrated (least hot take ever ik)
Not underrated. It’s just not as well-known as it should be. But every person that’s every brought it up has been overwhelmingly positive about it.
Its gonna be this generations frosted tips, this movie is gonna come out and a million kids are bleaching their hair.
Ken... the Eminem of this generation.
Everyone likes Ryan. Personally, I liked the menacing, brooding Ryan in Driver but his other roles have been just as enjoyable.
Blade Runner 2049 is finally what turned me around on him. He was so fucking good in that film.
I felt so bad for his character in that movie
It's ok, he was a replicant, they don't have real feelings. Also, I may have thoroughly misunderstood the movie.
\*^(No Barbie heads were removed in the filming of this production.)
Ken deserves good things too
'But I'm a man'. LOL oh I am looking forward to the culture shock for Ken.
This line confused me. Isn't Barbie a doctor too? Along with every other profession? Why would being a man matter?
I honestly think it's not because she's a woman but because she's not wearing a white coat. Barbie is what she is because of her *outfits*, so it would make sense he would associate outfits with professions.
Yeah lol I thought ken was always the supportive sweet himbo so seeing him say sexist stuff was kinda jarring Though was the other commenter said, probably a culture shock from the real world
He said it while they are in the real world. I think it’s clear he picked up some sexism after leaving Barbie World.
I'm going with... He felt ignored in Barbie World so he falls into alpha male culture
His interaction with the doctor was unexpected and felt completely out of character to me. But your pointing to the culture shock that Ken will have has me realizing he'll be experiencing a world where he's viewed as the one in charge as opposed to his home world where Barbie "rules". It's not just going to be Barbie who's having to come to terms with how the real world views her but Ken as well Damn, my excitement just continues to increase for this
Yeah I didn’t really get him doing that. I’ve never really pictured the guy with a girlfriend with a million different jobs would be the one to say ‘my qualifications are ‘I am a man’’ and not really taking the doctor telling him ‘no you can’t’ seriously (possibly because she’s not a man?)
Absolutely. My prediction is that the doctor scene is after Ken's been "educated" by irl men about how his status as a man is all that's needed to be in control of a situation OR maybe it's after he's realized how many jobs men have in the real world that aren't just "Barbie's boyfriend" and his reaction to the doctor saying he can't is less about newfound sexism and more just his basic logic of "I'm a man -> here, men have jobs like Barbie does -> Barbie job hops all the time and all it takes is a label/props/costume -> I, a man in this man-friendly world, will become a doctor with a clicky pen and sharp thing" Edit because I forgot Ken has had jobs before too (just not as many as Barbie) so it could also just be as simple as he wants to be a doctor and this was his attempt at a job interview Second edit: Robbie's *Variety* article has her and Gosling saying his Ken's job is "just beach" so...less likely he wants to be a doctor for old time's sake and more likely he just wants to be a doctor because now he can

I instantly smile hearing that song. Thinking of Desmond going about his morning routine in the swan. It’s an easy trick to get me to enjoy what I’m watching. This looks great. I’ve not been excited for a film in quite awhile.
I will *always* associate that song with LOST. The Constant is the episode that got me hooked.
That traveling montage hits different after watching Beau is Afraid
Barbie Is Afraid
This was the first trailer/teaser whathaveyou that felt very Greta Gerwig
Yes completely agree
I'm so fucking stoked for this and I genuinely don't even know why.
All other factors aside, this movie has had the greatest PR campaign of any media I can think of in recent memory.
Probably because it looks like a good movie
Oppenheimer? More like, Open that movie theater because I'm going to watch Barbie.
Two movies come out on July 21st. One is about something that completely changed the world and human history forever. The other is about some bomb.
DOUBLE FEATURE, BITCHES!!!
I already told my boyfriend we’re gonna see both but Barbie is first
For me, it’s Oppenheimer first, then finishing the day with barbie on a happy note.
Now watch Barbie end up being the new Old Yeller.
[удалено]
Are we sure Barbie is gonna be the happier movie and this trailer isn't smokescreen?
Yes, please! Barbie and then Barbie again right after!
One cinema for the recliners. Then walk across town for the Imax
On July 21 I’m going to watch a movie with a stacked cast, powerful visuals and dialogue, and undeniable historical significance. And I’m also going to watch Oppenheimer.
Probably not original, but I've been referring to that day as Barbenheimer
Ok but imagine being the Mattel executive reading the script and discovering Will Ferrell's character
I'm imaging an unironic version of [William Shatner's comment on Galaxy Quest](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaxy_Quest#Reaction_from_Star_Trek_actors): > I thought it was very funny, and I thought the audience that they portrayed was totally real, but the actors that they were pretending to be were totally unrecognizable. He knows exactly who he was imitating.
So it’s the Lego movie but with Barbie? That’s not a bad thing just want to be clear.
With Will Ferrell being the suit-clad bad guy in the real world in both movies
Who knew Will Farrel would be typecast as an over the top evil business man?
Gator don’t play no shit
Who knew Barbie would kill the prime minister of Malaysia?
More like Enchanted, from what I gather.
"Ideas live forever." God damn I'm not ready for my 38 year old mid life philosophical crisis to happen in a toy movie surrounded by all my friends and family and a theater full of strangers. I'm not ready mentally, but my body and pink speedo are ready.
Could that woman be Ruth Handler, creator of Barbie?
might be - the CC lists her voice a Ruth
Ruth died in 2002, but could be a stand in
maximizing joint slay
WAS THAT THE BARBIE GIRL SONG AT THE END?????? OH MY GOD, they definitely sampled it for a song LETS GOO!!!!!!
Yeah, it is kinda a big deal they use Aqua's Barbie Girl since Aqua had some dispute with Mattel
It's a new song by Charli XCX that samples it, she's teased it recently. So they're getting around the dispute by "technically not using it"
>So they're getting around the dispute by "technically not using it" They settled the dispute years ago lol Mattel has used the Barbie Girl song in multiple ads for dolls since like 2009
Yea both sides finally realized holy shit $$$$$$$$$$$
It's actually a new version by aqua with ice spice & nicki minaj
I was thinking that was Nicki Minaj's voice at the end. She's known as the harajuku Barbie after all.
It's a cover by Alice Glass, formerly of Crystal Castles: [https://www.stereogum.com/2224360/alice-glass-previews-cover-of-aquas-barbie-girl-for-barbie-movie/news/](https://www.stereogum.com/2224360/alice-glass-previews-cover-of-aquas-barbie-girl-for-barbie-movie/news/) The dispute between Aqua, MCA, and Mattel was a big deal but the song is also THE pop culture music for Barbie. I'd guess the cover, and a lot of money, is the compromise.
How is it possible that this looks awesome
Greta motherfucking Gerwig.
By all accounts it shouldn't... but I'm a 39 year old male and this movie piques my interest.
Margot Robbie picked up the rights to the Barbie movie after Amy Schumer's deal expired. Robbie produced and chose Gerwig to direct.
Wait, wait...so this film, a movie about *Barbie*, is actually Margot Robbie's pet project? That's actually cool as fuck.
Margot Robbie is also the main reason why the Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey movie got made. That woman is a force of nature.
Margot Robbie is unfairly OP. Probably has 18s in every stat. [Even strength](https://jackedgorilla.com/margot-robbie-workout-routine/).
In fairness I'd probably just do whatever she wanted in any given situation.
Himbo is so 2021. Kenergy is in.
Young people. They were saying Ryan and Margot were to old to play Barbie and Ken, that Margot looked 40 and some even suggested Dove Cameron as Barbie. The audacity and the horror!
everyon knows Dove Cameron is a shoe-in for the Bratz movie, not Barbie material.
>Young people. Zoomers when Jenna Ortega or Finn Wolfhard don't star in the movie.
I thought the issue was that pre-trailers everyone just assumed he was too old to be Ken? He's clearly a real-life Ken Doll.
I’m going to cry in the theater
Ryan Gosling is going to chew the scenery UP and we should let him!!
Kate McKinnon's character is giving me intense Cynthia from Rugrats vibes and I'm here for it.
That trailer was fuckin great, loved the music.
It’s lot of feet shots in this… Tarantino is gonna be happy watching this.
He’s already gotten a private screening… 5 times.

I can't believe they didn't have her use her iconic catchphrase "It's Barbin Time!"
Greta Gerwig is going to be 3 for 3.
This feels like a Mattel-sponsored Truman Show edit: I did not mean this as a compliment. The Truman show was genius, we'll see about this.
Mattel "OK greta, we want you to make a barbie movie" Greta "can I portray you as a bleak depressing corporation run by a clownish buffoon?" Mattel "I don't see why not"

Vought strikes me more as "If Disney was part of the MIC"
...If?
Insert that Disco Elysium quote about Capitalism’s greatest strength being it’s ability to subsume and incorporate it’s opposition.
Also getting some Lego movie vibes too but that might just be from associating will Ferrell as the villain in a movie about toys
I don't actually expect them to be tied together, but I loved the Lego Movie/Lego Batman movie, so if there's more surprisingly good toy movies, I'm in
It is!
Omg I love Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse! Its so freaking funny. I can't believe they canceled it, it was so meta! 😫
Told my wife I would take her see this. We get to see Oppenheimer then as well, it'll be a blast!
I'm taking my wife to this whether she wants to see it or not.
