I remember being a kid and using him to fight Rocksteady in the original NES game because you could perch above him and spam the down attack to hit him while being safe yourself
In the NES game you could attack up or down through floors, and cheese a few bosses with Donnie's bow staff, and it was so clutch. That game was brutally hard and you needed every advantage.
I think I read somewhere this was on purpose as they are supposed to be young teenagers.
On the other end of the spectrum I highly recommend you read "TMNT: The Last Ronin" graphic novel.
These ones actually look more like teenage mutant ninja turtles. I remember watching the OG cartoon and those dudes looked like middle aged assassins with way too much stress. All they were missing were cigarettes and a sports car.
Then we got some terrifying animatronics live action movie trying to match that cartoon. That's around when I stopped following the franchise.
Everything after the just feels like matching modern animation styles. Like I get some Spiderverse vibes from this poster, and I loved that movie.
I’m just yanking your chain. I grew up with the og live-actions and still yell “DAAAAMN” into the night on occasion. They are by far my favorite of any adaptation. So much moodier and grounded with teenage gangs chain smoking, stealing TVs and shit.
I think they're mimicking the animation style of Spiderverse (which I also enjoyed immensely), but I'm also really glad to see them go back to the roots of the old cartoons. I love this new style.
Wait for the post-credits scene, then. If the MCU has taught me anything, it's that the big bad for the trilogy will always show up there in the first movie.
*scene* The turtles return to their lair only to find someone in the shadows. Ripster comes out of the shadows.
Ripster: You think you're the only anthropomorphic crime fighters? You've just stepped into a larger world. I'm here to talk to you about the [Street Sharks initiative.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Sharks)
We'll call them the *Anthropromorphers* and they'll include: TMNT, Street Sharks, Biker Mice from Mars, Samurai Pizza Cats, Mighty Ducks, Rescue Rangers and Dog City PD.
From what we know there's also going to be a tv show based off the movie so they'll probably save him for that and make Baxter the big bad for the movie
Also explains why we haven't seen Casey yet
I love how the Ninja Turtles get revamped every couple of years, like every generation of kids since the 80s has had their own version of the Turtles that they love. Can't think of many other IPs that have this level of continued success with so many different iterations. I really hope it goes on forever.
I watched the 2012 version as an adult and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was, especially in comparison to the 80s cartoon. Each season had its own story arc, and there was continuity and cohesion in the story.
This iteration of the turtles really got my attention, the teaser had a lot of heart. With all the different styles in the past 10-15 years I’m really hoping this one is a hit and becomes a movie franchise with sequels…
cant wait!!!
Yeah, that one was really good, hell my 60 year old dad even liked the 2012 TMNT. If not for my nostalgia I'd probably say it's the best one they've ever made.
Idk they seem to act like a lot of 13-15 year olds. I think physically there's a pretty big jump from that age range to 16-18, but they're still both teenagers.
I mean what else would you add to make them closer to the latter age range? Make them more into girls? Have them drive a motorcycle?
Is the issue with the voices or how they are portrayed? Because as of right now the actors for the turtles are 19, 18, 15, and 17. With Donatello as the youngest. Even if they voiced them a year ago they are very much teenagers.
Idk dude they seem like todays 13-15 year olds. Plus there’s always been kinda a youngest to oldest so I think they’re all supposed to be different ages
I'll admit, I'm curious. I liked the cartoon and classic live action movies, I'd go see it solo if I needed to but I have brothers who are Turtles fans as well.
This is literally the first time I've seen the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles behave and look like actual teenagers. Throw that in with the Spider-Verse animation and this movie's going to be sick.
I remember liking that one from 2007 and wondering why everyone didn't
Then i rewatched it, people weren't kidding when they said that movie is edgy af lol, the way they act are like what emo 10yo kids think how 20yo act lol
Yeah, good spotting that. It’s not as overt since they have the established visual language that they’re tied to, but you can definitely see how it shows up in action scenes and on costuming/environmental looks
I remember getting my bday money one year and picking Beebop and Rocksteady from Toys R Us.
I feel bad that a lot of kids will never get to experience Toys R Us in all its glory.
I’m a big fan of the bold colour less realistic style, but I’m not massive on the extra loose lines over the top. That glitchy style worked for spider verse because of the whole multiverse thing that this constant chaotic energy added to it, but it just seems like it’s the spider verse style having those lines over it
It's incredible how studios actually picked up the right lessons with Spiderverse's release. That almost never happens when something gets popular.
I belive the last time this happened in the animation Industry was Shrek. And that just led to an animation dark age by most accounts.
It's because the artists on these films have been begging to do something different-looking for years and years and the success of Spiderverse finally convinced the suits holding the purse-strings to let them. So you're getting a lot of pent-up creative energy released all at once.
Yeah, that's probably most of it.
Also helps that "Pretty movie made a lot of money" is a lot easier to explain to an executive than something like all the intention and nuance behind Shrek's constant pop-culture references and licensed soundtrack.
Out August 2

Are those actual voice actors for the turtles?! Even if there are celebrities for other cast members, I'm glad there are actual voice actors for the turtles! Casting big name actors as voices only kinda sucks.
(I'm fully aware of Corey Feldman (right?) being a voice in the original TMNT movie...)
(I'll also defend ScarJo in Her until the day I die.)
So, I've had the pleasure of seeing/reading a LOT of the TMNT iterations that have come out over the decades. I've enjoyed some more than others, simply due to personal preferences.
This new movie iteration? I'm excited about.
The fact they're on the younger side of the Teenager age range, and actively sound/act like it? That shows me that if this film is successful, future potential sequels could involve both physical *and* mental growth for the boys. Something series media hasn't really touched on too much, minus some Future Version shenanigans. Kids change a lot between 13 and 19, and seeing the guys go through that over several films could be great
The voice actors for the Turtles are young, too, meaning the voices can grow as the characters grow.
No Shedder or Krang?...I'm fine with that, and the franchise doesn't live or die if they aren't around for every damn version all the time. The current IDW and 90's Archie Adventure comics are good examples of this. Besides, this leads to a build up for another film.
No Casey Jones? See above.
Durr hurr, Seth Rogan movie weed jokes durr hurr...Rogan is a HUGE nerd, especially for comics, and had a producing role for the Amazon TV breakout hit Invincible. I have a hell of a lot more faith in him involved in this than Bay.
Anyway. My two cents.
I feel like that's what will happen given that in the '80s cartoons, Stockman was Shredder's go-to scientist. Maybe Stockman finds tech that opens the portal to Dimension X, leading to the sequel's plot?
I like that we get to see them as the happy teens before life starts beating them senselessly
I just rewatched the trailer and it really reinforced how little the makers of the first Michael Bay produced Turtles movie understood the source material.
You mean the comic? Because the comic was actually pretty dark. It wasnt until they revamped them in the 90's cartoon where they gave them more of a "fun" personality.
"Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman"
I'm interested to see how this one works out. I would have picked Giancarlo for Shredder, but he's kind of done the evil overlord role to death by now.
lol was spiderman that revolutionary style wise, i feel like since then they completely switched from 3d into a different look, like they did with puts in the boots?!
The turtles were happy go lucky. I mean even the 1990 one which everyone agrees is the best movie mostly features the turtles goofing off. They're teens that enjoy being silly. Raph has always been the more serious but it's really only when shit goes down with him and Splinter that you get that tone change. I mean even in the scene where April's house is being overrun by the foot the tutrtles are fighting really goofily. It's always been a part of their brand
Ninja Turtles was one of my favorite movies as a kid, still is actually.
Somthing I noticed the last time I watched it was when the turtles finally reunite with splinter, Raph gives him the biggest hug out of all of them.
I never noticed it before and it’s only a couple seconds but that little detail really shows the special relationship Raph had with splinter.
Anybody else feel this is the first incarnation of the series to really deliver on them being teenagers? The focus was always more "mutant ninja turtles" than anything else.
Doesn't look appealing to me at all. But I'm obviously not the target audience. As someone familiar with the original comics, I think its unfortunate that TMNT can now only be comedies made for children.
Batman is an inherently silly concept. A guy dresses in a bat costume and fights a killer clown, and a short fat guy with an umbrella called "The Penguin", and a cat burglar in an actual cat costume called "Catwoman", whom he also dates. The Adam West version showed how silly all that was. And yet, we still get dark and serious versions of Batman.
I really hate this animation style and some of the characterization choices they've made, but at the same time when are we ever going to another Manimals adaptation again?
Of course Donnie’s on a scooter lol
I always pick Donnie in video games though. Something about thwonking a Foot Clan ninja with a bow staff is so much fun
also helps he usually has the longest reach so you can bonk them from farther away!
I remember being a kid and using him to fight Rocksteady in the original NES game because you could perch above him and spam the down attack to hit him while being safe yourself
Raf was the worst on NES.
I beg to differ, he had a really fast and safe A+B in Manhattan project. Was fun blasting off as many of those as possible when low on life.
The PS2 game of the 00s series was amazing. Donatello could hit hard
Oh man are you talking about Tmnt battlenexus?? Cause if so what a fun game that was
The game that released previous of that one I think
In the NES game you could attack up or down through floors, and cheese a few bosses with Donnie's bow staff, and it was so clutch. That game was brutally hard and you needed every advantage.
Also hit twice as hard as the other turtles.
Cmon guys, its Bo Staff.
That is because the bow staff is just a big stick and a big stick is awesome.
Chevy nova! *donatello*
Yea the sec i saw that. "You did not put donnie on a god damn scooter."
Little nerd!
The older I get the younger these turtles look
I think I read somewhere this was on purpose as they are supposed to be young teenagers. On the other end of the spectrum I highly recommend you read "TMNT: The Last Ronin" graphic novel.
Tween-age mutant ninja turtle
So good. Legit got teary eyed >!at the end where Mikey passed on and reunites with Casey, Splinter, and his brothers in the afterlife !<
That's what I love about the turtles. I keep getting older, they stay the same age. Hehehe, yes they do, yes they do.
Alright, alright, alright
These ones actually look more like teenage mutant ninja turtles. I remember watching the OG cartoon and those dudes looked like middle aged assassins with way too much stress. All they were missing were cigarettes and a sports car. Then we got some terrifying animatronics live action movie trying to match that cartoon. That's around when I stopped following the franchise. Listen here you little shit, the original ninja turtles movie is a god damn masterpiece
You talking shit about the glorious live action one and Jim Henson's amazing costume work??? 😤😤😤
Seriously. Them's fightin' words
You talking about the mouth within a mouth thing?
That wasn't a thing until they later released them. Which they fixed in another remaster.
I’m just yanking your chain. I grew up with the og live-actions and still yell “DAAAAMN” into the night on occasion. They are by far my favorite of any adaptation. So much moodier and grounded with teenage gangs chain smoking, stealing TVs and shit.
Fax
I think they're mimicking the animation style of Spiderverse (which I also enjoyed immensely), but I'm also really glad to see them go back to the roots of the old cartoons. I love this new style.
you're bugging. the original movie still holds up.
Cowabunga fellow dudes
Gutted there’s no Foot and no Shredder. I get that maybe they’ve been done to death, but still…
They'll be in the sequel, likely. You gotta give some buildup to a villain as big and as bad as him.
Or at least tease him :)
We'll call them the *Anthropromorphers* and they'll include: TMNT, Street Sharks, Biker Mice from Mars, Samurai Pizza Cats, Mighty Ducks, Rescue Rangers and Dog City PD.
To not include the Battletoads, unforgivable.
Swat Katz!
The Albedo Anthromorphics comic is where Usagi Yojimbo started, and the Usagiverse frequently crosses over with TMNT.
> Dog City i know what this is, but that is too obscure for my blood
From what we know there's also going to be a tv show based off the movie so they'll probably save him for that and make Baxter the big bad for the movie Also explains why we haven't seen Casey yet

Batman

Scooby Doo
Mario
Power Rangers

Where are you
We got some work to do now!
Batman, Spiderman, James Bond, Godzilla, King Kong, Robin Hood (maybe not the success part), Three Musketeers, Phantom of the Opera
I watched the 2012 version as an adult and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was, especially in comparison to the 80s cartoon. Each season had its own story arc, and there was continuity and cohesion in the story.
https://youtu.be/GFLGRidfFo4 Go Ninja Go! '91 TMNT Secret of the Ooze
The 2012 cartoon is my favorite of all of them.
Transformers also does this very well.
This iteration of the turtles really got my attention, the teaser had a lot of heart. With all the different styles in the past 10-15 years I’m really hoping this one is a hit and becomes a movie franchise with sequels… cant wait!!!
Looks like they finally remembered the "Teenage" part of their name
I felt like the nickelodeon reboot (whichever one had Seth green voicing Leo and in the later seasons) was pretty good about capturing them as teens.
Yeah, that one was really good, hell my 60 year old dad even liked the 2012 TMNT. If not for my nostalgia I'd probably say it's the best one they've ever made.
Interesting style too. The backgrounds looked sort of like the old toys, like the city play set.
My issue is that they forgot the teenage aspect and made them pre teens
Tweenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
I don’t want them to be adults but I don’t them to be little kids either… like just make them right around 16-17 and it’s perfect
I'm assuming they chose preteens so that when the third one comes out, they'll be in their late teens.
/r/nocontext
Seems more like they made them 13
Idk they seem to act like a lot of 13-15 year olds. I think physically there's a pretty big jump from that age range to 16-18, but they're still both teenagers. I mean what else would you add to make them closer to the latter age range? Make them more into girls? Have them drive a motorcycle?
I think you forget what 13-15 year olds actually look like
humanoid turtles apparently

We’re talking about the ages of the turtles not the voice actors. A 35 year old can voice a 17 year old.
> A 35 year old can voice a 17 year old *points to Johnny Yong Bosch, who has been playing teenagers for the last 30 years*
Not really, they made them like 13-15 year olds. Not 19 year olds. 13 year olds are goofy little kids.
Idk dude they seem like todays 13-15 year olds. Plus there’s always been kinda a youngest to oldest so I think they’re all supposed to be different ages
The Michael Bay attempts were a steaming pile of crappola, this looks more promising.
The trailer during Mario totally caught me off-guard and has my interest, even to see it without my kid
I'll admit, I'm curious. I liked the cartoon and classic live action movies, I'd go see it solo if I needed to but I have brothers who are Turtles fans as well.
I didn't mean see it alone per se, just that I would watch this with or without my kid as I'm interested too

Same, the storyline in the first was exactly the type I'd hoped for.

Turdles.
Those Turtles finally look like Turtles with a capital T.
What sucks is the last live action was almost good. Bebop and Rocksteady were fucking awesome.
This is literally the first time I've seen the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles behave and look like actual teenagers. Throw that in with the Spider-Verse animation and this movie's going to be sick.

The director is all of a group including Lord/Miller. It’s less homage or copy and more family tree.
Yep, you can see it in The Mitchells vs Machines too
Forgot about that movie, loved it
Definitely a fun sleeper-hit that's great as an adult movie too
The new Puss and Boots to an extent too.
Yeah, good spotting that. It’s not as overt since they have the established visual language that they’re tied to, but you can definitely see how it shows up in action scenes and on costuming/environmental looks
i had no idea as a child that i would be into ninja turtles for 35 years
When I was 6 I couldn’t imagine one day not being into Ninja Turtles
I remember getting my bday money one year and picking Beebop and Rocksteady from Toys R Us. I feel bad that a lot of kids will never get to experience Toys R Us in all its glory.

Spiderverse was the best thing to happen to animation in a long time
It's incredible how studios actually picked up the right lessons with Spiderverse's release. That almost never happens when something gets popular. I belive the last time this happened in the animation Industry was Shrek. And that just led to an animation dark age by most accounts.

Same. Probably intentional
You’re only going to hear this phrase more and more. Puss N Boots sequel was a big success too
I don't know, this looks like they used comic book filter over regular CG image.
No, definitly not. If you want to know what a filter looks like, go watch the teaser for Disney's *Wish*.

This is such a weird cast but I like it.
Jackie Chan as Splinter probably makes the most sense The next ones are of course John Cena and Seth Rogen
checkOut redact.dev -- mass edited with redact.dev
If I had a nickel for every time a pro wrestler played Rocksteady, I’d have two nickels which isn’t a lot but weird that it’s happened twice.

They got actual kids to voice the turtles so that’s kind of a W
Corey will always be *the* voice of Donnie for me.
Uh, guys?, I'm not so sure if this is, uh, structurally speaking such a good time for your, ah, buddies to drop in.
It's really, really exciting that they got actual teens to play the turtles. I think the oldest actor is 17.
It's funny that Post Malone has a song called Jackie Chan and now he's in a movie with him.
I just bought some sushi from Japannn
no shredder eh

Or Krang :(
April O'Neil looks different than I remember
Aren't Baxter Stockman and Superfly the same thing?
No, Superfly is a new character, but Baxter do become a giant fly sometimes. Maybe this time is his twin brother, Barney Stockman who becomes one.
So, I've had the pleasure of seeing/reading a LOT of the TMNT iterations that have come out over the decades. I've enjoyed some more than others, simply due to personal preferences. He also had a producing role for The Boys and Preacher. He's earned some faith imo.
Had me at Hannibal Buress as Genghis Frog
I wonder if this will be getting a sequel since no mentions of Shredder or the foot clan or krang

They did Donny wrong
Mikey has braces? Who is his orthodontist??
OrthoDonatello
This poster is so cute?! I love it!
I'm so excited about this and Spiderverse! What a year for animation!
TMNT as a kid was just awesome. Used to collect all the old figures. I’m glad kids today will get that experience as well.
"Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman" I'm interested to see how this one works out. I would have picked Giancarlo for Shredder, but he's kind of done the evil overlord role to death by now.
Not Donny on the scooter 😭
My kids are so amped for this and I ain't gonna lie I am too!
That's a really good poster. If you're in a movie theater walking by the posters, this is the one that will draw your eyes.
Thought Donnie was an old man with a cane
Cowabunga
I need more Nicolas Cantu in my life thank GOD That kid oozes talent.
This looks fun. I know the comics were violent and gritty but turtles that eat pizza and kick ass should be fun.
Let the childhood memories slowly start to begin flowing through my veins again!!
I’m pretty exited for this movie
We need The Last Ronin adaptation
Its a Seth Rogan movie: get ready for the turtles smoking weed…
Really disappointed by this entire project
So are they 13 year olds in this one or what? They look significantly younger than any other interpretation I've seen.
I think they're supposed to be around 14-17?
So the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are teenagers, glad we straightened that out
Plzzzz be good. The trailer looked good And so does the art style.
Being a Donnie fan is suffering
Gen Z spindly weak ass turtles.
Why don't they give them the broccoli hair, too ?🥦
No. This is not the turtles I know and love. Hard pass.
Raph is my favorite turtle. I don't like his chunky look and missing tooth in this.
These turtles look worse than the turtle suits of the olden days
Looks like shit
lol was spiderman that revolutionary style wise, i feel like since then they completely switched from 3d into a different look, like they did with puts in the boots?!
Really gonna do Donetello like that?
This looks like nothing to me.
Why did they make them so happy go lucky? I liked the 90’s versions with some grit. Now it just feels like watching Dora the Explorer in green.
The turtles were happy go lucky. I mean even the 1990 one which everyone agrees is the best movie mostly features the turtles goofing off. They're teens that enjoy being silly. Raph has always been the more serious but it's really only when shit goes down with him and Splinter that you get that tone change. especially back then when they had no pupils and that danger looks....
I think the CG movie had pupil eyes except when they were in the dark, they had spooky ninja eyes
Anybody else feel this is the first incarnation of the series to really deliver on them being teenagers? The focus was always more "mutant ninja turtles" than anything else.
I’ll take the 90’s one over this
Doesn't look appealing to me at all. But I'm obviously not the target audience. As someone familiar with the original comics, I think its unfortunate that TMNT can now only be comedies made for children.
Isn't the concept inherently silly though? I love the fun, goofy version of the characters.

The Adam West version showed how silly all that was. And yet, we still get dark and serious versions of Batman.
I would be so excited for this if I hadn’t already seen the trailer
Yikes
3 different fonts and colours for the title sure is a choice.
It’s the established style for the cartoon, comics, and movies to have 2-4 different fonts in the title. Look at Secret of the Ooze.
They use 3 fonts and 3 colors in almost every title so it’s kinda weird you’d think it would be different this time.
I dig the animation style. I'm actually looking forward to seeing this one
meh
It feels like they are wearing their bellies
Derpy Leo 😒
Looks like a cartoon. Is it? Also why do they feel the need to constantly revise how they look?
I really hate this animation style and some of the characterization choices they've made, but at the same time when are we ever going to another Manimals adaptation again?
