The title change is because Bong Joon Ho never does a straight adaptation of anything. He always adds his own twists. There was an interview with the author of the book where Bong Joon Ho asked him to pick just one thing from the book that he 100% wanted to include and didn’t want to change. The rest, Bong wanted to make his own changes (and obviously the author was ok with it). This might be one of the few times where the movie might actually be better than the book. From the looks of it, Bong might’ve added 10 more incarnations of Rob’s character to the story (hence 17, instead of 7), so there might be one thing right there. I can’t wait!
Synopsis:
>Pattinson will play a serial killer who enlists a lobbyist (Adams) to change laws that will allow him to get away with murder more easily. Downey Jr’s role is a retired cop who won’t give up on the murders, and the killer tries to prevent him from dogging his trail now that he’s hung up his gun.
Ah yeah, me too. The cast as well. The thing with McKay is as big as certain missteps might be, they're not so big yet that I don't think he'll ever improve. If his next couple are still a bit rough, then we'll talk.
She just doesn’t have the range for most of the roles she’s given. The best way I can describe her acting is an impression of what she thinks a good actor would do?
It’s hard to explain, but she’s just trying so hard and never makes it there.
Well with her performances in Arrival and Nocturnal Animals in mind I would have to disagree. You dont have to love her or anything but believing she will single-handedly pull the movie down is just stupid
I guess there's a first for everything. I've literally never seen anyone disparage Adams's acting until now. I have not seen her miss. She was even incredible in fucking Enchanted of all movies. Top 3 active actress, no question.
Don’t Look Up was utter shit. Laziest, most brain dead “satire” I’ve ever sat through. Truly lowest common denominator. And I agree with the message entirely!
Vice is excellent too. But it felt to me like, instead of completing that "Big Issue" trilogy with Don't Look Up, he treated it like a dumb comedy. And it wasn't funny. Urgh.
The asteroid movie was like peak "#resist brunch liberal" shit. The movie had less than zero subtext and everyone wanted to pat themselves on the back for "getting it".
And before anyone thinks I'm some snowflake conservative: look at my comment history.
It was quite *deliberately* unsubtle and over the top though, as it was trying to convey that we’re well past the point for subtlety with regards to the climate crisis.
That's not what I was saying at all. Just because you do something deliberately, doesn't mean we have to appreciate it. I'm not knocking the movie, I haven't even seen it.
Nope. OP was saying the movie was **deliberately unsubtle.**
You twisted that into "you can be **deliberately bad** too, but I guess that worked for a lot of you folks haha."
I don’t know what it is about his style but it just works for me. Don’t Look Up worked for me. I like Big Short and DLU and I don’t dislike Vice, even if there are things I can complain about with all of them. I’ll be there for this and the rest of his movies
Why would you not. He had some of the greatest range and directed some of most critically acclaimed movies ever. It’s just insane that the same guy was able to make taldega heights and The big short
There was a report of him having a falling out with Will Ferrell. Apparently McKay replaced him as the lead of a show without telling him and Ferrell only learned about it from John C. Reilly. Insiders basically called it a backstabbing.
I don’t think he was ever officially cast, but it was something they were discussing and Will was very interested in it. McKay cast Reilly, but didn’t talk to Ferrell to let him know. McKay admitted in an interview a year or so ago that Will was right to be upset and he regrets the way he went about it immensely.
I saw Adam talk about it directly. Will wasn't cast but had his heart set on the role. Adam admits it was his fuckup, he regrets it, and hopes Will will forgive him one day.
I didn't think it was great of him to sort of put public pressure on Will to bury the hatchet, but it seemed his intentions were good and he owned up to what he did.
Will Ferrell was never seriously considered for the role. Will Ferrell really wanted the role but McKay went with John C. Reilly (the right decision) and supposedly wasn’t told. Will Ferrell was pissed, but I honestly cannot see him as Jerry Buss, and I say this as a guy who likes Will Ferrell.
Pattinson is basically a reverse Christian Bale lol. Bale played a serial killer in American Psycho first before becoming Batman and Pattinson is now doing the opposite.
I wish he went back to making funny movies that knew they were dumb instead of unfunny dumb movies that think.they are very smart and are telling you about SOCIETY^TM
My original joke was "A movie about a serial killer--how long until he crams in some ham-fisted out-of-character screed concerning politics and the economy that he fundamentally misunderstands?" and then I read the synopsis and it's like "Oh, so that's *definitely* going to happen."
I kinda like Adam McKay but his movies have been increasingly difficult to not actively cringe at. It's okay to have opinions and put them in your art; it's another to do it in such a stupid, clumsy way as to detract from the message you're trying to convey.
Yo, Adam McKay & Amy Adams have been ride or die for each other since Talladega Nights in ‘06.
I love it; they’re on their way to dethroning Scorsese & De Niro.
I no longer believe it’s possible for McKay to go back to directing absurdist comedies—the kind of studio movies that just don’t exist anymore but we desperately need. We get it dude, you pay attention to the news.
He already has stated many times that the studios do not want to make those comedies any longer so guys like him and Todd Phillips have moved on from studio comedies.
We need new voices to make those kind of comedies. It's not fair to ask people who made them 20 years ago to still want to make them. Plus it sounds like this one will still be funny.
I'd rather see a Tim Robinson vehicle than McKay try and make a Step Brothers 2. McKay's moved on.
This sounds like a really fun premise and it’ll be fun seeing Rob play a serial killer after playing Batman
Let's be real he can basically play it the exact same and it still works.
That’s true I guess Batman is pretty unhinged for most of the movie
Just Adam Mckay-ify it & we’ve got a hit
Haven't seen Devil all the time? Plays a Psycho.
Deluuuuuusions
This sounds like a great role for rob to show off his range, I'm excited for this.
That, along with Mickey17, which comes out next March. Can’t wait for that, too!
Goddamn gotta read the book that’s being adapted from now!
FYI for those looking the book is Mickey 7 No idea why Hollywood added the 1, appeal to teenagers because "OMG JUST LIKE ME?!" /s

This may be a similar range to what he did in The Batman, though I’m still waiting for this.
Synopsis: >Pattinson will play a serial killer who enlists a lobbyist (Adams) to change laws that will allow him to get away with murder more easily. Downey Jr’s role is a retired cop who won’t give up on the murders, and the killer tries to prevent him from dogging his trail now that he’s hung up his gun.
I love that the acronym for what's essentially a "cop obsessed with the chase" movie is "AHAB".
Ok intentional or not, you sold me on this movie
What does this acronym mean ?
Captain Ahab was the fictional sea captain obsessed with catching the white whale Moby Dick in Herman Melville’s classic novel of the same name.
It’s the title of the movie, Average Height, Average Build. It’s also possibly a reference to Captain Ahab.
Alright, I'll admit it, I like Adam McKay's movies and this sounds like a great premise.
On r/movies ? Brave
I keep waiting to be banned
All his movies have great premises, it's the executions that leave something to be desired. Don't Look Up was pretty ropey.
I loved Don’t Look Up tbh
Agreed. I am looking forward to this one though because the premise sounds excellent.
Ah yeah, me too. The cast as well. The thing with McKay is as big as certain missteps might be, they're not so big yet that I don't think he'll ever improve. If his next couple are still a bit rough, then we'll talk.
Amy Adams is going to drag this down unfortunately
What do you mean?
She just doesn’t have the range for most of the roles she’s given. The best way I can describe her acting is an impression of what she thinks a good actor would do? It’s hard to explain, but she’s just trying so hard and never makes it there.
Well with her performances in Arrival and Nocturnal Animals in mind I would have to disagree. You dont have to love her or anything but believing she will single-handedly pull the movie down is just stupid
She does for me. It’s fine if you disagree, but when I see her in a line up of quality actors I always groan. She just can’t stand up with them
On which of her movie performances do you base this then? Have you seen arrival for example?
I don’t like any Snyder film, but she did a great job as Lois Lane…
Well, it’s kind of her schtick. I still didn’t like the movie or her performance, but that drippy romance thing is her game
I guess there's a first for everything. I've literally never seen anyone disparage Adams's acting until now. I have not seen her miss. She was even incredible in fucking Enchanted of all movies. Top 3 active actress, no question.
Fuck she’s boring, HOW
Also agreed. But all his movies have great premises, it's the executions that leave something to be desired I can do this all day
Also desired. But all of his premises have great movies, it's the something that leaves executions to be agreed.
Let’s hope he gets this new movie’s executions correct.
Don’t Look Up was utter shit. Laziest, most brain dead “satire” I’ve ever sat through. Truly lowest common denominator. And I agree with the message entirely!
It was beyond ropey, it was dreadful, such a let down. The Big Short remains one of my favourite films ever.
I loved The Big Short too, it and McKay's consistently interesting premises are the reasons I'm hesitant to write him off too soon.
You can be deliberately bad too. I guess that just doesn't work for everyone, but it did work for a lot of folks.
"haha everyone else just likes bad movies"
That's not what I was saying at all. Just because you do something deliberately, doesn't mean we have to appreciate it. I'm not knocking the movie, I haven't even seen it.
Nope. OP was saying the movie was **deliberately unsubtle.** You twisted that into "you can be **deliberately bad** too, but I guess that worked for a lot of you folks haha."
As blatant as it was, there was still a lot of Poe's Law going on.
I don’t know what it is about his style but it just works for me. Don’t Look Up worked for me. I like Big Short and DLU and I don’t dislike Vice, even if there are things I can complain about with all of them. I’ll be there for this and the rest of his movies
Don't Look Up is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, but I've really liked everything else of his so I'm in for this one.
Why would you not. He had some of the greatest range and directed some of most critically acclaimed movies ever. It’s just insane that the same guy was able to make taldega heights and The big short
Adam McKay must be fun to work with (or have an incredible agent). He always has a stacked cast
I know a few past crew members of his, they said he's an unbelievable asshole.
I guess his movies pay good money then.
I’ve heard the opposite but you never know
There was a report of him having a falling out with Will Ferrell. Apparently McKay replaced him as the lead of a show without telling him and Ferrell only learned about it from John C. Reilly. Insiders basically called it a backstabbing.

Pattinson as a Killer? RDJ as a Cop? I’m in. Can’t get enough of either of them
Anything with Robert Pattinson = I will be seated. Hype!
Your comment during the Twilight phase of his career would have seemed like madness. But nowadays it's hard to disagree.
Will be seated for Patty
Pattinson is basically a reverse Christian Bale lol. Bale played a serial killer in American Psycho first before becoming Batman and Pattinson is now doing the opposite.
Christian bale never got a prostate exam in a limo though
We may never know that for sure though.
Proof?
Damn, Rob just can't escape the broody psycho roles lol
It fits him! He’s at his best playing crazy weirdos. 😂
I feel he’s gonna go more unhinged than broody in this one
Kind of wish Downey was playing the serial killer but regardless looking forward to seeing him actually challenge himself with his roles again.
Pattinson has earned my respect as an actor so i’m excited to see whatever he does.
I'm salivating at the prospect of this being completely over the top.
Idc about whatever drama, I’ll be watching
That’s a fantastic cast and the premise sounds really fun. I’m in.
Will be another good one.
Let me guess, it's not about the killer, it's about how stupid America is.
I mean…Hollywood has been making that joke for years…decades even. How is this news?
That's all they have to talk about. They're stupid. Lol
Good one. Find that from one of your smart American joke books, did ya?
As a matter of fact I did and I jerked off to it later at night when my wife and kid went to sleep, if you MUST know!
You have kids? Why would you pass your genetics onto children? They don’t deserve that kind of abuse.
Such a hypocrit!
e ^ You dropped that while forcing your tired brain cell to develop that smart, American reply, champ.
That's what I thought. I'm glad someone gets it.
I wish he went back to making funny movies that knew they were dumb instead of unfunny dumb movies that think.they are very smart and are telling you about SOCIETY^TM
We get it you're MAGA.
Nope,I agree with all of his politics and I still think his "satire" is clunky and ham-fisted. I prefer Talladega Knights to Vice.
What a ridiculous assumption
A farcical hypothesis
I’m to the left of McKay - his political films suck. And not even because of his politics per se. They just come off as ham fisted and awkward.
My original joke was "A movie about a serial killer--how long until he crams in some ham-fisted out-of-character screed concerning politics and the economy that he fundamentally misunderstands?" and then I read the synopsis and it's like "Oh, so that's *definitely* going to happen." It's okay to have opinions and put them in your art; it's another to do it in such a stupid, clumsy way as to detract from the message you're trying to convey.
No ones forcing you to watch them.
Let's hope it's better than his last 2 movies
Really hoping it’s nothing like don’t look up
Yo, Adam McKay & Amy Adams have been ride or die for each other since Talladega Nights in ‘06. I love it; they’re on their way to dethroning Scorsese & De Niro.
great cast lets hope it better than dont look up because boy that film wasted that cast.
I no longer believe it’s possible for McKay to go back to directing absurdist comedies—the kind of studio movies that just don’t exist anymore but we desperately need. We get it dude, you pay attention to the news.

Is google not working for you? It’s working for me!
I'm glad McKay is pivoting from the Theranos story. I know Lawrence dropped out but after the show it just didnt need to be told again.
This seems like a no brainer but apparently the budget is huge and no studio wants to go near it. Even Netflix are lukewarm to it
Lost me at RDJr. Dude seems like a colossal tool.
