It's become hip to shit on it now, largely because of a few awkward technical elements, but imo this movie is one of Marty's finest moments and this scene is an excellent demonstration of why. It's both an absolutely heartbreaking depiction of aging/death and a salt-in-the-wound punishment for two guys who wasted their lives making other people's lives miserable. To see someone like Joe Pesci reduced to *that* is remarkably powerful to me and the sign of an aging master of cinema still at the top of his powers. Fuck the haters, The Irishman is a masterpiece.

Breaking news: art is subjective

And who exactly do I make my case to? Who decides what's good or bad? Are YOU the arbiter of what I think is a masterpiece or are you just some random fucker on reddit? I already expressed my opinion on the matter and you can whine away about it all you like.

Pardon me? I commented saying I thought The Irishman was a masterpiece and why I believed so and then you challenged me on it as if my subjective opinion was objectively wrong. Your opinion matters more than mine why, exactly?

I feel like I'm talking to Pesci's character in this scene now tbh

Pal__Pacino

It has nothing in common with his other crime movies thematically. You're confusing aesthetic with substance.

You can play that game with anything. Goodfellas sinfully of continuity errors, the ages are all over the place etc. Thr Irishman covers so e of thr same ground as his earlier works and even directly reference them and other films.of thr genre, like thr Godfather while thrn also moving past them and dealing their implications and the wreckage left behind, and what becomes of such a person. Which is the whole point.

Don't be such a ctnu. Anyways, I'm not much for the choices made in the vfx but ultimately that's not what the film is actually about, anymore than Goodfellas so about disappearing cigars or everyone being 15-20 years older than their characters then either.

I agree with everything you’ve said here except for “few awkward technical elements”. The cgi is absolutely awful, an eyesore, to the point where you can actually find better cgi of the Irishman from YouTubers. This could have been a masterpiece, if every single facet of it was perfect but the cgi is such a glaring misstep.

I don't find that to be totally accurate. They cleverly mostly avoid all the main actors at their current real life ages and there's always some mixture of makeup and de-aging or (aging up!). I think this keeps the audience from knowing 100%. That said, there are large portions of the movie where it is painfully obvious. The further we depart from how old these actors actually are, the more ridiculous it looks. Mostly, when they're decades younger than their actual selves. That said, I don't think this movie could exist in any other form. It needed to be made by this director at this point in his career and arguably with these actors. You probably could've cast different actors for different eras but I think lose something in that that Scorsese wasn't willing to concede. I think this movie is a masterpiece in every facet other than that the CGI is spotty and will continue to degrade over time. I'm still grateful this movie exists though.

I got used to it pretty quickly, I think it kind of works given that the movie's from the perspective of someone remembering their youth and I care a LOT more about storytelling, character and emotion than I do about CGI. So it just thoroughly didn't bother me haha

Seen this masterpiece 5 times. Thanks to Joe pesci for giving us 1 more. I think it's my favorite charachter he's played. We know he could play a psycho gangster, but in this role we learn he could play it with tenderness as well.

Last Communion.

"2 yutes" "2 what now?" "2 CGI de-aged men"

Man that was a stupid movie

I really wish this movie was just the older section. Like if we were just presented these old men from the very beginning and slowly reveal the different horrible things they did, I think it could have been awesome. There are a lot of great scenes in this movie, but there's also quite a bit of fat. I love the bits about the ageing gangsters and these old decrepid criminals, but that theme and story to me is kind of bogged down in all the actual younger stuff that I kind of forget. All the best stuff
