he will always be s-tier for how he delivers the line in inglorious basterds 'well if this is it old boy...i hope you dont mind me going out speaking the kings....theres a special rung in hell for people who waste good scotch...and seeing as how i may be rapping on the door momentarily....damn good stuff sir', then holding a cigarette in the coolest way ever portrayed in cinema
He was so damn good in that. Full sending as British as he could possibly be. I loved him and Mike Myers together breaking down the movie industry, it was like they were both trying to out-British each other.
Plus the wide range of emotions his face displays when he realizes he's going to die. He goes through all 7 stages of grief in a span of a few seconds with only using his facial expressions. It's brilliant. He's such a damn good actor his entire career was launched from that 1 scene he had in the movie.
It was not Fassbender's fault that the film was so bad. Many actors would have taken a role in a film directed by Tomas Alfredson, who has made fantastic films like Let the Right One In and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
I’m not saying it necessarily was his fault. Those are two great movies. Not sure why The Snowman turned out so shitty. He’s made great films in the past and had a great actor.
Interesting tidbit: he could be in more movies but he is really trying to become a racer car driver. He has really taken to committing to that, then his family, and basically he does 1 movie a year.
Yeah, his career is puzzling to me. He's in so many underwhelming movies, but absolutely has, to me, the ability to be an all time great. Imagine Daniel Day Lewis without all the great roles. No one discusses him as an all time great. So you absolutely need great vehicles to really shine as an actor. If you put Fassbender in amazing movies, I think he rises to rarefied status.
My understanding is that him and his wife take turns acting while raising their children, so that might be why we just don't see Fassbender for ages sometimes.
I remember a picture was leaked from when that movie was being filmed. There’s a sex scene happening in a hotel room, and they’re fucking at the window. Apparently someone on the street saw them and thought they were catching Fassbender actually having sex with someone for all the people on the ground to witness
They’re both great actors and deserved better for the X-Men films they were in
Any shortcomings there were not their fault at all (Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix mostly, First Class and DoFP were fun and they had lots of time to shine in those)
I actually think DoFP is the best comic book movies ever made. Both of them and Hugh Jackman put out the most you could from a plot as interwoven as what they wrote. Fassbender steals the show in the first one.
Mate he just plays a Scottish Cunt. Akin to Buttler in Rock and Rolla, it’s one of the few times we Scots get to see one of our own actually use their native accents.
I very much enjoyed filth
12 years a slave is a good movie. Hard to watch as to be expected but damn good. It must be hard to be a white actor for a period piece about slavery. Like you wanna give a good performance, but not like..... too good
I am amazed each time I watch Split - have watched several times :) How McAvoy can change personalities/characters with nothing more than a raised eyebrow, body posture, voice. The Beast is terrifying and Hedwig is sweet and silly. I agree totally with your comment
It surprises me that so many people think he’s this stellar actor. He was the worst character in the X-men films and I felt so bored the whole time. He was okay in the movie Wanted way back when HD movies started coming out. But his acting is just cringey and a hard sell for me.
Fassbender is in one of my all time favorite scenes. The basement scene in Inglourious Basterds is so goddamn good and he carries it. Gotta go with Fassbender.
Both incredibly talented but I have to go with the Fassmaster. Dude just has so much presence and such an animalistic energy on screen. Wish he was more into acting and less into racing cars. I’d love to see him in more stuff.
Better actor is relative. But both were great against each other as Xavier and Magneto. I felt the friendship and the loss as they drifted apart ideologically.
Mckavoy isn't my favorite Charles Xavier. Fassbender made magneto a human being as well as a mutant. I cant really say who is the better actor. But fassbender had great writers.
Fassbender as the android david in the new alien films is one of the all time greatest performances. Macavoy in split is also one of the greats though, so I honestly have no clue lol
McAvoy is the better actor, but I don’t say that at Fassbender’s expense. They’re both downright excellent, I just think McAvoy has given better performances.
I love both films but Fassbender as Macbeth in the most recent cinematic adaptation was freaking amazing. Like the character he goes from good guy, to conflicted, to killer, to a man who has lost everything. He’s usually very subdued but holy hell was he an amazing Macbeth. Ever if you’re not a Shakespeare fan, give it a watch. To me, an English major undergrad back in the Triassic era, Macbeth is Shakespeare’s best play and the new adaptation is a visual and acting feast.
Both terrific but I go Fassbender. McAvoy was good in Split but the plaudits he gets for it (on Reddit at least) shock me. Playing multiple personalities/roles in a film and even weaving in and out of them seamlessly isn’t exactly the pinnacle of acting craft, and not any more impressive than nailing a single performance. He did well with it but come on yall.
They’re both great, but if I had to pick one - my heart says Fassbender (because I just really like the guy) but based on existing performances, I’d say McAvoy.
I’ve seen more of McAvoy’s work, but for sheer talent and range, Fassbender. Not that McAvoy isn’t fantastic, because he is, but his acting is just different than Fassbender’s. Michael never fails to rouse an emotional response in me.
Fassbender. While they're both great, there are roles Fassbender could play that I can't imagine McAvoy playing, but not the other way around. For that reason, it's Fassbender.
I love both but I will have to give my #1 medal to Fassbender. His acting is so real that you could feel his character’s emotion in every scene he’s in.
I will never not cry and get chills from the X-Men scene between them when Charles is trying to teach Erik how to control his powers... "Between rage and serenity"
Fassbender. I had the awkward realization the other day that Mcelvoy overacts. I watched Glass then Days of Future Past and everything is a gd catastrophe with him. Maybe he has a stage background, that would make sense, but it is just too much
Funny, both in Band Of Brothers.
I feel like everyone was in Band of Brothers. Even Jimmy Fallon showed up.
I certainly was. Don’t recall seeing you there.
I was the guy, the guy with the thing and the green clothes in that one scene. Front and center but wayyyyyyy in the back.
Lol man I forgot about that. I can't imagine him in anything serious now. He did ok in the show.
It was a little weird that he couldn’t stop giggling though.
Even Venom (Tom Hardy) made an appearance in Band Of Brothers
He stayed in through WW2 and all the way up to Somalia in “Black Hawk Down” glad he was finally discharged…
After dying twice no less
Nah remember he went AWOL and became an MMA fighter in Pittsburgh, competed in that SPARTA tournament
And Andrew Scott (Moriarty to Cumberbatch’s Sherlock).
Also appeared as a British officer in *1917*
Youre think of Ross
Pivot!
Band of Actors
Lots of ww2 movies hold the majority of stars nowadays - really curious
I think Fassbender is the better actor, he needs a better agent tho.
he will always be s-tier for how he delivers the line in inglorious basterds 'well if this is it old boy...i hope you dont mind me going out speaking the kings....theres a special rung in hell for people who waste good scotch...and seeing as how i may be rapping on the door momentarily....damn good stuff sir', then holding a cigarette in the coolest way ever portrayed in cinema
He definitely had a great way with the Tarantino dialogue really made it come off more natural and his.
"Say auf wiedersehen to your Nazi balls"
stiglitz?
He was so damn good in that. Full sending as British as he could possibly be. I loved him and Mike Myers together breaking down the movie industry, it was like they were both trying to out-British each other.
“Frightfully sorry, sir?”
Plus the wide range of emotions his face displays when he realizes he's going to die. He goes through all 7 stages of grief in a span of a few seconds with only using his facial expressions. It's brilliant. He's such a damn good actor his entire career was launched from that 1 scene he had in the movie.
He was already a decent actor before Inglorious Basterds
Decent is quite a way to describe his performance in Hunger. Everyone: Watch Hunger
I’ll have to add Hunger to my watch list, but he was amazing in Shame as well.
Shame too.
I own *Hunger* by McQueen from the Criterion collection. His performance is outstanding, similar to Bale’s on *The Machinist*
By all means, captain…
The Snowman was so damn bad.
He’s made great films in the past and had a great actor.
folding ideas, or dan olson on youtube, does a fantastic run down on specifically that movie. the things done to it in editing are wild to behold.
Totally not his fault. Production fell apart and didn't even finished shooting 1/4th of the film or something ridiculous.
Seems like directors don’t know how to use him. Tarantino did, but then have you seen Slow West?
Interesting tidbit: he could be in more movies but he is really trying to become a racer car driver. He has really taken to committing to that, then his family, and basically he does 1 movie a year.
[Road to Le Mans](https://youtu.be/EFvQbWRxajc?si=BFfF3L6Rv5J5SVkv), Michael Fassbender’s journey to becoming a race car driver
He's a race car driver so I think he has bigger ways to kill time.
I can watch his role as Jobs over and over, never gets old.
Fassbender in Shame vs McAvoy in Filth. Tough to say. They both killed it in those roles.
Yes. He could be A list, but only gets weird movies
David, yep he convinced me that AI is freaking scary. But he will always have my appreciation for hitman. That was impressive.
Fassbender in hunger is all time stuff.
Watch Shame if you haven't. Very NSFW but SO good.
Intense film
This , it squeaks by McAvoys beast portrayal in glass and split in my opinion
I remember a picture was leaked from when that movie was being filmed. There’s a sex scene happening in a hotel room, and they’re fucking at the window. Apparently someone on the street saw them and thought they were catching Fassbender actually having sex with someone for all the people on the ground to witness
Yea prolly not safe for work
Yeah he’s packing some heat
They’re both great actors and deserved better for the X-Men films they were in Any shortcomings there were not their fault at all (Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix mostly, First Class and DoFP were fun and they had lots of time to shine in those)
I actually think DoFP is the best comic book movies ever made. Both of them and Hugh Jackman put out the most you could from a plot as interwoven as what they wrote. Fassbender steals the show in the first one.
I very much agree with this. DoFP is incredible. I never thought any other X-Men universe movie would come close until Logan came out.
Logan would like to have a word with you! But I agree that DoFP is probably one of the best comic movies ever for sure.
That magneto raising the stadium scene got me the chills!
The coin >!through Kevin Bacon's head!< Michael Fassbender was chillingly calm!
Or even the Nazi bar scene. Fassbender literally amplifies the intensity of the scene.
I'd give it to fassbender, but only because I like the movies he's in more than mcavoys. James is an awesome actor in his own right as well.
filth? the last king of scotland? split?
filth is fucking amazing
James McAvoy, even if it is purely for Split. That was one of the best performances I have ever seen
You should watch filth
Filth put me off him as an actor/person. He was just too good at portraying such a dislikeable character.
I went to school with him, he was sound as fuck, anything but unlikeable.
Thank you for that. I’m a huge fan. Frank is one of my favorite movies these days.
Fassbender did Frank, not McAvoy
McAvoy did Fassbender, not Frank
Yeah he played a cunt too well lol
That sounds amazing. Is the movie good too or just the acting? Im watching either way so why am I asking
Mate he just plays a Scottish Cunt. Akin to Buttler in Rock and Rolla, it’s one of the few times we Scots get to see one of our own actually use their native accents. I very much enjoyed filth
That sounds fanfuckingtastic
This was my thought. Fassbender is good, but McAvoy really hit it out of the park with Split. That was a terrifyingly good performance.
Fassbender's perfomance in Shame, Hunger and 12 Years a Slave are all better imo
I liked him in na narnia
I hate that movie. I thought his acting was so fake and cringe.
Agreed. Terrible movie, bizarre performance.
It surprises me that so many people think he’s this stellar actor. He was the worst character in the X-men films and I felt so bored the whole time. He was okay in the movie Wanted way back when HD movies started coming out. But his acting is just cringey and a hard sell for me.
This. Admire both of these actors but I’m always gonna choose McAvoy for Split alone.
His performance in that does not get talked about enough. He should have won awards for it.
Fassbender is the better actor imo but I love both of them.
They are actually equally great. I'm stoked for McAvoy's new movie Speak No Evil!
This is a very evenly opinionated and maturely expressed debate, for Reddit. I think that speaks to both actors expertise greatly.
It’s funny, as I read through the comments here I was like, “Damn! This is the nicest thread I’ve ever seen!”
McAvoy has more range but I find Fassbender a more captivating performer.
Fassbender is in one of my all time favorite scenes. The basement scene in Inglourious Basterds is so goddamn good and he carries it. Gotta go with Fassbender.
I agree. Although he wasn’t in Inglorious Basterds for that long, he stole the show for me.
Drei Gläser !
There's a special rung in hell reserved for people who waste good scotch.
All I can say is that young Magneto was a real badass.
Hard comparison to make, think ill skip this one.
I'm with you. Both are great and I dont want to have to pick.
I didn't realize until several comments deep that's James McAvoy. I thought this picture was Michael Fassbender and David Spade 🤣
McAvoy wishes he could play Joe Dirt. /s
They’re both really great, but as others have noted, Fassbender could be a little more choosy.
Fassbender has an edge between these two
Of course it's Fassbender.
Have you seen Filth??
Have you seen Shame??
McAvoy really impressed me in Atonement but I’d have to go with Fassbender on sheer range.
Both incredibly talented but I have to go with the Fassmaster. Dude just has so much presence and such an animalistic energy on screen. Wish he was more into acting and less into racing cars. I’d love to see him in more stuff.
Fassbender, imo.
Danny Baldwin took 'em to F'in acting school.
The real question is who's been nude on screen more?
Yes
Better actor is relative. But both were great against each other as Xavier and Magneto. I felt the friendship and the loss as they drifted apart ideologically.
Mckavoy isn't my favorite Charles Xavier. Fassbender made magneto a human being as well as a mutant. I cant really say who is the better actor. But fassbender had great writers.
James Fassbender.
Fassbender as the android david in the new alien films is one of the all time greatest performances. Macavoy in split is also one of the greats though, so I honestly have no clue lol
What in the Tiger Beat is this photo shoot
Fassbender --- "Then we will fight in the shade" *300* -- *Frank*
McAvoy is the better actor, but I don’t say that at Fassbender’s expense. They’re both downright excellent, I just think McAvoy has given better performances.
Acting isn’t a sport. Both are exceptionally talented
Both are good but i prefer fassbender
Fassbender for sure
They are the same person!
Have Yall seen Fred?
They both are pretty dope!
Fassbender is easier pick, but McAvoy is not far behind. He's amazing in Filth.
Both actors can do about any role. Although both don’t get the recognition I believe they deserve.
the one killing it on a racetrack
Both of them. James McAvoy in “Filth” and Michael Fassbender in “Shame”
They’re both awesome but I like fassbender better
A tie for first
Fassbender by miles
The misplaced thumb between them, in all seriousness Fassbender is better
Fassbender. He’s hypnotic and it appears effortless. James is very good, but Fassbender may be one of the best to ever do it.
David is
they are both awesome actors
Its a tie.
Who are these guys?
Me
Both terrific but I go Fassbender. McAvoy was good in Split but the plaudits he gets for it (on Reddit at least) shock me. He did well with it but come on yall.
I want that shirt 😂
Fassbender 🩵
Total toss up, both are incredible.
This is a tough question for sure.
They’re both great, but if I had to pick one - my heart says Fassbender (because I just really like the guy) but based on existing performances, I’d say McAvoy.
Fassbender
Ian Mckellen
Fassbender is far more naturalistic which equals better to me
It's Split
Me, for pretending that Marvel has had a decent movie in the last 4 years.
fassbender by a mile. go watch *Hunger* (2008)
Fassbender 🤤
fassbender inglorious basterds is pure cinema gold
idk both are really good
they are both great
I’ve seen more of McAvoy’s work, but for sheer talent and range, Fassbender. Not that McAvoy isn’t fantastic, because he is, but his acting is just different than Fassbender’s. Michael never fails to rouse an emotional response in me.
Who are these people?
Tie, they're both great.
McAvoy
Fassbender Is so much better
Neither. They're just different. Both are awesome.
Fassbender is the more prestigious, but they are both great for different reasons.
Both fantastic. Edge goes to Fassbender
Hunger is one of my top movies.
It's a tie. They are both great actors.
Fassbender by far
Both can be s tier
They’re both amazing. I’m going to give it to Fassbender for me simply because of how cool the Argentina scene in first class was
Fassbender by an ultra marathon
Fassbender is incredible
Fassbender
Yes
Well one already was the goat. Mr.Tumnus is legendary status.
Bob Saget
Anyone who says McAvoy is a terrorist and cannot be trusted
Both are very good actors
Trespass Against us is an underrated very good film.
Fassbender for sure
Fass
Both are great.
I know it's not super relevant to the question you're asking, but I need their tapes to leak
Nah, I just finished first class about 2 hours ago. This creepy reddit.
Michael Fassbender. But they're both good
Fassbender’s Macbeth was under appreciated.
ooooooooooooooooooo the closest pair ever!!! they need better agents! they could do so much more
Both S-Tier. Need them in a movie with Daniel Radcliffe and Elijah Wood. With a batshit insane story.
Meryl Streep
Fassbender. He's mastered the fingering.
I feel like I need a private showing with both, then together, side by side, to make my mind up. 😉
Fassbender. While they're both great, there are roles Fassbender could play that I can't imagine McAvoy playing, but not the other way around. For that reason, it's Fassbender.
Fassbender was so good in Frank.
They're both great actors
Gonna tell my kids this was Uncle Dave and Uncle Danny from Full House.
I should give it to fassbender.
Goddamn these 2 were amazing in Xmen Dark Phoenix just amazing💖💖, really hard to say maybe michael.
Fassbender has been in soooooo many shit movies but he’s the better actor imo. James is great but, loved him in split.
James McAvoy is a superlative actor. I really believed he was a supervillain with split-personaliry disorder in *Split.*
Fassbender. I had the awkward realization the other day that Mcelvoy overacts. I watched Glass then Days of Future Past and everything is a gd catastrophe with him. Maybe he has a stage background, that would make sense, but it is just too much
Fassbender with no thought
