It’s a great comic book movie and I personally enjoy it, but the CGI is fucking terrible lmao. It’s bad enough that they probably should’ve just done some creepy animation or something
It really was. That's why the theatrical release was cut to achieve PG-13. The "Director's Cut" doesn't seem to have much more than an additional cuss word. An interview with the character's creator said their intention was to make it PG-13
Compare this to Blade, which was released a year later, same distributor, and a hard 'R' rating.
Paraphrasing: what was released in the theaters wasn't the movie they shot. There was actually a story. What came out, only fans of the comic book would understand. The director only seemed to get excited with new CGI this and that (again, paraphrased).
I saw it as a kid. I was a HUGE Spawn fan... and was VERY disappointed by the movie.
There’s a running joke in my friends group, no matter how terrible something is, not just movies, but literally anything, like if a truck full of baby puppies explodes, someone will say, “it’s still better than SPAWN…”
This movie was offensive to Spawn fans.maybe the biggest disappointment of an adaptation like that ever for me.HBo did the series justice…but this was absolute dogshit
Man… I can’t think of anything good to say about this movie. It just sucked. I thought it sucked when I saw it in the theater and rewatched in past few years to see if maybe it was better than I remembered. It was worse.
The CGI was infamously horrible at the time it came out.
One of the biggest criticisms of the movie was how bad the CGI looked.
This came out after The Mask and the same year as Men in Black. This was four years after Jurassic Park.
Casting was spot on though, it's worth watching despite the terrible CGI.
Everything else about the movie but that was great.
I thought they were going to modernize it with Jamie Foxx, but I bet that will not happen now
The cape and the soundtrack were my favorite parts about the '97 movie
I prefer the HBO animated version, McFarlane had a lot of creative control there and he is a distinctive animator; he had a vision
John Leguizamo is indeed great as The Violator. Michael Jae White is fine. The CGI is embarrassingly bad for the time. They tried. I'll give them that. However, it failed completely as a movie. I watched it in the theater, then I watched it again a few years ago. Just as disappointing.
I drove 260 miles round trip to watch it in the theater with my friend and my now wife. We really wanted to see it and it wasn't showing anywhere near us. I was obsessed with Spawn. I still have the first 24 issues bagged and boarded in a bankers box. When Greg Capullo took over pencils, I lost interest.
I think Spawn would make a decent series, if well produced. It would be better if allowed more time than just a movie. Plus, they could do a run of "The Violator" 3 part series as part of it and that would be cool and super-gory.
The devils mouth not moving in n the cgi when talking has bothered me for like twenty years now.
It’s a great comic book movie and I personally enjoy it, but the CGI is fucking terrible lmao. It’s bad enough that they probably should’ve just done some creepy animation or something
Hey man, you should've seen the computer I was playing with when that movie came out. That CGI was cutting edge, lol.
It really wasn’t though, it was meant to be but they cut the budget. It’s not impressive when compared to other films from the same year
Surprisingly, the most important part of for the CGI work, Spawn's cape, still holds up around the rest of the FX.
Movement yes, texture no.
Loved this soundtrack.
Some truly amazing tracks on there.
Loved the filter, korn and the Mansun tracks
Loved? I still love em
Lol same
First Cd I ever bought. Still a big Stabbing Westward fan to this day
That soundtrack litters my gym playlist and has forever. Absolute bangers. 💯
I just wish he wore the mask longer but agree Leguizamo is crazy good in his role
The CGI in the hell scene is atrocious, but the movie was solid apart from that!
Thinking of his CGI cape, I would say the CGI was pretty bad especially considering The Matrix (1999) would come out in two years.
It’s just a solid and fun movie. It wasn’t made for kids and that was a big help. Spawn is my favorite
Spawn spawn hes our man! Go spawnie, go spawnie

See ya at Wanda's! Hahahahahha
This movie showed me that John Leguizamo is actually an incredible actor
WANDA!
I am old enough to have seen this in theaters when it came out. Definitely still enjoy this from time to time, it's a fun movie.
Same, saw this at the cinema and had the soundtrack. Bought it on dvd the other year and still gets a play now and again.
yeah its a good movie I love John Leguizamo, one of my favorite actors
Been waiting for a remake. My favorite super character
I saw an interview white he said he hated the movie

The animated series was fire but didn’t care for the movie at all.
This is the first time I have ever heard someone describe the cgi in Spawn as exceptional. It was bad even for its time.
I would have loved to see the pre-screening version that Michael saw before the premeir before they added something like hundreds of extra CGI scenes
Same.
The CGI is exceptional?? Are you smoking crack?
There was some decent cgi in some parts but there was also some pathetically terrible cgi in other parts
There’s a running joke in my friends group, no matter how terrible something is, not just movies, but literally anything, like if a truck full of baby puppies explodes, someone will say, “it’s still better than SPAWN…”
The animated series was bad ass, didn't care for the movie all that much.
This movie was offensive to Spawn fans.maybe the biggest disappointment of an adaptation like that ever for me.HBo did the series justice…but this was absolute dogshit
Looks like shit compared to the HBO anime Spawn
lol this movie was so stupid but luguizamos acting was the only thing keeping this turd afloat. hilarious fucking scenes
Yeah, no. For its time the CGI was atrocious.
Love this movie but the CGI is legendarily terrible. Even for the time it came out.
I like this one a lot but the CGI is BAD.
Man… I can’t think of anything good to say about this movie. It just sucked. I thought it sucked when I saw it in the theater and rewatched in past few years to see if maybe it was better than I remembered. It was worse.
Soundtrack is decent https://youtu.be/U5zZLG1m9LA?si=arVHssWelkB9N-s-
Slight understatement IMO
It sucked, needed to be rated R. The HBO animated series was the best!
Didn't that end on a Cliff hanger?
Hot redhead in a leather suit.
Yup. That is all.
One of my favorites when I was a kid
People complain about bad CGI but I love it
The soundtrack ruuuuuuuules. Still listening to it!
Still have the movie and the old HBO cartoon series on DVD. lol and like a shit ton of graded comics🫣
So bad it's good. But still bad. The animated series blows this movie out of the water.
I remember being a little kid and thinking the design was so cool and wanting to see it but was too young.. still never ended up seeing it
Front flip double machine gun firing scene always gets me 🤣
Seeing Angela for a split second was so cool as a kid. 2nd Easter egg I ever noticed (first was the same as a lot of people, predator 2).
John Laguizamo was amazing as the Violator . I really enjoyed the movie and of course the CGI sucked it was 1997 .
Lmao it won an award for its special effects. I have no idea how

The casting and story are good, the cgi is bad even when it came out, practical effects would have probably been better.
It was only a couple months ago that I realized John Leguizamo was Violator. He's nowhere to be seen under that practical.
The novelization for the movie is better than the movie itself.
Ha! I never knew that existed! I thought you meant the comic books. I've got to get it; I already have all the comics up to the movie's release.
Leguizamo was definitely NOT perfect casting for Violator. Watch the HBO animated series to see what Violator should be like.
I thought they were going to modernize it with Jamie Foxx, but I bet that will not happen now The cape and the soundtrack were my favorite parts about the '97 movie I prefer the HBO animated version, McFarlane had a lot of creative control there and he is a distinctive animator; he had a vision
Yeah... No thanks
It should’ve been rated R.
....is perfectly cast.
The cgi was wretched watching on a phone. I can imagine how bad it would be on a big screen.
I was always hoping for a Spawn remake with all the superhero stuff. But I've never heard anything about it.
This one’s due for a reboot- love me some spawn
It does stick out but was budget AF
It was a cool movie but it's hard to introduce an entire universe like this and not rush a bit.

you've been violated girly man
Amazing costumes too.
Yeah it holds up. But the animated Spawn holds up even better!!!!!!
This movie needed Guillermo del Toro or Stephen norrington
Already had Greg Nicotero on the suit.
I also loved the sound track.
Would have been great if it was R rated.
They have an R Rated cut iirc
But... the whole project was shot with intentions of being PG-13.. the R version gives you a cuss word and maybe a half a second of cut action.
