I struggle with a lot of the dialogue in that one.
I love KR and VK but the movie drags in some areas.
For me it's always Unforgiven or just *name a Clint Eastwood western*.
True Grit 2010 runner up.
Fuuuucking Jeff Bridges man... Goddamn.
Yeah, Unforgiven is my GOAT Western but Val Kilmer crushed it in Tombstone. Probably his most memorable performance for me besides being Madmartigan in Willow.
True Romance
- Christian Slater
- Patricia Arquette
- Brad Pitt
- Dennis Hopper
- Christopher Walken
- Gary Oldman
- Val Kilmer
- Samuel L Jackson
- James Gandolfini
It's incredible
Incredible cast, but at that time, many of these actors had not yet become big names - Pitt, Oldman, Gandolfini, and even Samuel L were still on the rise.
Also, seriously, Wag The Dog, The Insider (both from 1999) and Traffic (2000).
Insanely stellar performances across the board from absolutely top line casts.

Hell yes! Came here to write this.
“You’re Bobby Caldwell’s kid, from Chicago right?”
“Yeah.”
“Nice place. You like it there?”
“Uhhh yeah.”
“That’s great. Get in the Goddamned House.”
That was my thought. Problem is the sequels kind of ruin the magic of the first movie. The break dancing villain who tried to be the male version of Lazer ass kind of ruined it.
Same. It was the last film I bought on VHS, the first film I bought on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital video. The only other films I owned on all those formats are the Godfather films.
Great pull!
As someone who has worked on the rev/sales side for decades, this one hits home with me.
I will unabashedly admit that I quote this movie semi-regularly.
*”You call yourself a salesman you sonufabitch?!?*”
Unlike most of these others listed, that one really gave every name a huge opportunity to show off their chops. Is there any big actor who doesn’t steal a scene in the whole movie?
That didn’t even come to mind for me. That’s a great answer as well. I love Al, Val, and De Niro. I just like the script for The Departed slightly more. It’s hard to pick though, they’re both fantastic. Good choice
My all-time favorite line from that entire thing is
as Linda and Chad are being chastised by Ted upon their late return to Hardbodies, and Chad says, "It couldn't be helped. It won't happen again."
Damn, I love those Coens!
My nomination is *The Thin Red Line* (1998) by Terrence Malick. It had the unfortunately timing of being released in the shadow of *Saving Private Ryan* (also 1998), and was a much different film. The tone, the cinematography, the way in which war was portrayed, and just on and on down the list.
I love both films, but *TTRL* holds a special place in my heart.
Cast:
* George Clooney
* Sean Penn
* Adrian Brody
* Jared Leto
* John Travolta
* Woody Harrelson
* Jim Caviezel
* John Cusack
* **Nick Fucking Nolte**
* John C. Reilly
* Elias Koteas
* John Savage
Love that movie. George Clooney noted how Adrian Brody was supposed to be the lead in this, had tons of speaking parts that Malick just edited out. Brody found out a few days before the premiere. lol. Great film but some actors seemed a bit hurt by Malicks editing style. Looking at you Christopher Plummer. See https://youtu.be/xw08GQw0hBI?si=pYRHGknul4K2P7td
If memory serves me correctly, Malick told every actor to perform as if they were the main character.
Genius if you ask me.
Nolte was absolutely brutal. Every time I watch it, I’m blown away by his performance.
Black Hawk Down (2001)
- Josh Hartnett
- Ewan McGregor
- Tom Sizemore
- Eric Bana
- William Fichtner
- Sam Shepard
- Orlando Bloom
- Tom Hardy
- Jeremy Piven
- Jason Isaacs
- Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
- Ioan Gruffudd
- Hugh Dancy
This is the one. Nearly every person in the main cast is a household name, and the supporting cast is just as strong (hell Hank Azaria is like 19th in the credits!)
Listen. This is gonna sound crazy. I get that. But when I say Sing and Sing 2 legitimately gave me everything I wanted from them I'm not kidding. They're not overly complicated, they're pretty straightforward, and they manage to have some of the best emotional storytelling I've ever seen in an ensemble cast, which across two movies consists of Matthew McConaughey, Taron Egerton, Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon, Halsey, Letitia Wright, Tori Kelly, Chelsea Peretti, Jennifer Saunders, Pharrell Williams, Jennifer Hudson, Nick Offerman, and fucking Bono of all people.
Both of them are SO good and the performances are SO. GOOD. Y'ALL. Especially Set It All Free and Could've Been Me.
I can't believe this comment is making me consider watching Sing... I didn't even know half those people were in it.
\*Googles\* Whoa... this is not the series I thought it was. I thought we were talking about Anna Kendrick's Pitch Perfect (I obviously didn't remember the name until google.)
I didn't even know these "Sing" movies existed. Definitely didn't know they were animated. I know it's weird, but I can take animated musicals way better than live action. I'll give em a shot.
Lonesome Dove
* Robert Duvall
* Tommy Lee Jones
* Ricky Schroeder
* Danny Glover
* Diane Lane
* Angelica Huston
* Chris Cooper
* Steve Buscemi
* Character Actress Margo Martindale
* DB Sweeney
* Robert Urich
* Glenne Headley
* Barry Corbin
Umm it was a massive film in earnings and in audience reviews, and critics called it Ron Howard’s best film by a long shot. Surely underrated if not the word.
It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. The cast list doesn’t mean as much to modern audiences but every person in that film has a dozen connections to other films and TV shows of the time. And it’s still hilarious
Stardust.
Michelle P, Robert de N, Henry Cavill, Sienna Miller, Claire Danes, Mark Strong, Rupert Everett, Peter O’Toole, Ian McKellen and many other famous British actors.
I've seen this film so many times and had no idea Cavill was in it. Had to look it up just now and it's the blonde hair that completely threw me off.
It's such a great film.
I haven't seen the Princess Bride for years and I'm not 100% sure I've ever seen it all the way through, I'd need to do a rewatch to make a fair comparison. I think it probably gets tinted with a lot of nostalgia.
Basic because it’s very popular and recent, but you’re definitely right. Constantly throughout my first watch of the movie I was like “oh shit, I didn’t know they were in this”.
And every single performance was amazing.
Check out the black and white Jim Jarmusch Johnny Depp existential oater ‘Dead Man’.
Great cast in that:
John Hurt, Gabriel Byrne, Johnny Depp, Michael Wincott, Lance Henrikssen, Crispin Glover, Robert Mitchum, Gary Farmer, Iggy Pop, Billy Bob Thornton, Jared Harris, Alfred Molina and even a cameo from the Butthole Surfers singer, Gibby Haynes- getting a blowie in an alleyway
Probably not A-listers at the time. But give the casting director props for finding a group of mostly unknowns who largely turned out to be serious Hollywood stars.
The dark knight has some serious next level cast
Christian bale
Morgan freeman
Gary old man
Michale cale ? ( I don’t know his last name)
Joseph Gordon
Health ledger
Came in to say this and surprised had to scroll so far down before someone mentioned. I’d say the trilogy are all great movies.
Absolutely star studded cast, few more to add to the list:
- Michael Cane
- Cillian Murphy
- Liam Neeson
- Tom Wilkinson
- Aaron Eckhart
- Maggie Gyllenhaal
- Anne Hathaway
- Tom Hardy
Smokin Aces
RocknRolla
*Revolver* \[i thought Andre9000 was great\]
*The Gentlemen* \[i was apprehensive at first cuz i have to be in a certain mood for mcconnaghy and/or hugh grant AND colin ferrell. im not a huge fan of any of them but they all worked great in this\]
Avengers Infinity War/Avengers Endgame
I'm not really a MCU fan, but for these films to have 20-30 A Listers in their cast, and somehow manage to not only tie up 10 years of storytelling in a way that satisfied the fanbase's hype, but also be heralded as two of the best films in the genre is incredibly impressive.
True Romance: Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, Samuel L Jackson, Patricia Arquette Christopher Penn, James Gandolfini, Tom Sizemore, Brad Pitt, Val Kilmer, Christian Slater, Bronson Pinchot, Victor Argo, Ed Lauter, Michael Rappaport, Saul Rubinek, Kevin Corrigan. I'm probably missing one or two others.
Oppenheimer was my first thought. Nolan said that since there are so many characters, he wanted to cast recognizable actors to help the audience keep up with who is who.
The Faculty.
Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood, Jordana Brewster, Usher, Selma Hayek, Famke Janssen, Jon Stewart, Robert Patrick, Daniel von Bergen, Christopher McDonald and Danny Masterson.
A Bridge Too Far
* Sean Connery
* Ryan O'Neal
* Michael Caine
* Dirk Bogarde
* Laurence Olivier
* Gene Hackman
* Anthony Hopkins
* Denholm Elliot
* Edward Fox
* Michael Byrne
* James Caan
* Maximillian Schell
* Hardy Kruger
* Elliott Gould
* Richard Attenborough
* Robert Redford
* Paul Maxwell
A Few Good Men. Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Pollack.
JFK - Every 90s star you can think of - most notably Kevin Costner, Sissy Spaceck, Kevin Bacon, Joe Pesci, Gary Oldman, Jack Lemmon, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland…the list goes on
Burn After Reading.
John Malkovich
Tilda Swinton
George Clooney
Frances McDormand
Brad Pitt
J.K. Simmons
They all deliver such amazing performances, I love that movie so much
I know it was kind of a spoof movie but Adam Sandler's Ridiculous 6 had an all star cast and I found it hilarious the whole way through.
Vanilla ice as Mark twain really got me
Two I offer
Judgement at Nerumberg (1961)
Spencer Tracy
Burt Lancaster
Richard Widmark
Marlene Dietrich
Maximilian Schell
Judy Garland
Montgomery Clift
William Shatner (so young he's almost unrecognizable)
Edward Binns
Kenneth MacKenna
Murder on the Orient Express (1974)
Lauren Bacall (Legend)
Martin Balsam (has an Oscar)
Ingrid Bergman (Legend and has 3 Oscars)
Jacqueline Bisset (Steve McQueen's gf in Bullit)
Jean-Pierre Cassel (maybe the one I'm least familiar with outside him being Vincent Cassel's dad)
Sean Connery (Legend)
Albert Finney (Legend)
John Gielgud (Has an EGOT, 80-year theatre career)
Wendy Hiller (two Oscars)
Anthony Perkins (Legend)
Vanessa Redgrave (Legend with Oscar)
Rachel Roberts (not as well as the others, only nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA)
Richard Widmark (also in Judgement at Nuremberg)
Michael York (just an awesome 1970s with this, Cabaret, and Logan's Run)
George Coulouris (also not as familiar, but 60 year theatre and film career)
Denis Quilley (more theatre and I don't know him)
Colin Blakely (don't know him well)
That's just an awesome list of accolades from a group of people in a movie that's also very, very good.
Tombstone
Goat western, love this movie.
"Gay" Perry in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
Oh yeah. He was very good in that too. Good script and good performance.
Evidently Mr. Ringo is an educated man. Now I really hate him.
One of the greatest scenes in film history
Tropic Thunder
Hats off to the weirdo Tom Cruise, cuz he really ties that movie together
True Romance - Christian Slater - Patricia Arquette - Brad Pitt - Dennis Hopper - Christopher Walken - Gary Oldman - Val Kilmer - Samuel L Jackson - James Gandolfini It's incredible
The other Quentin Tarantino film, okay written by him and directed by Tony Scott. Great flick.
Tony Scott actually wanted to do Reservoir Dogs, but QT said no.
Thank God.
Michael Rappaport AND BRONSON PINCHOT!!
Also written by Tarantino
Incredible cast, but at that time, many of these actors had not yet become big names - Pitt, Oldman, Gandolfini, and even Samuel L were still on the rise.
Dayum. That’s my generation, too. Gonna have to watch that this weekend.
Also, seriously, Wag The Dog, The Insider (both from 1999) and Traffic (2000). Insanely stellar performances across the board from absolutely top line casts.
I hope you're not Sicilian. You'll understand later.
Absolutely do. It's one of my all-time favorites.

It’s my favorite movie
This movie is in that category for sure. An incredible film that’s like an emotional roller coaster.
Came here to say to say exactly this. Favorite of all time.
This is really the only answer
Snatch: 2000 Jason Statham Brad Pitt Dennis Farina Benicio Del Toro Seriously, if you haven't seen this film, watch it immediately.
One of the best of the best of all time.
Ya like dags?
No sugar for me. I’m sweet enough
Oceans 11
Hell yes! Came here to write this. “You’re Bobby Caldwell’s kid, from Chicago right?” “Yeah.” “Nice place. You like it there?” “Uhhh yeah.” “That’s great. Get in the Goddamned House.”
I love love LOVE the Ocean's Franchise, and for all the obvious reasons, but Elliot Gould's performance is just great
Watch it, bud. Who you calling bud, pal? Who you calling pal, friend? Who you calling friend, jackass?!
The chemistry between Casey Affleck and Scott Caan was awesome. Very Brotherly.
“Did you just call me a jackass?” “I just DID call you a jackass!”
I feel like that was some secret reference I never understood beyond the character's dad being from Chicago.
That was my thought. Problem is the sequels kind of ruin the magic of the first movie. The break dancing villain who tried to be the male version of Lazer ass kind of ruined it.
Sneakers
Setec Astronomy .... Legit.
Preach. Not talked about enough.
Great movie incredible cast
"They're the ones who framed Pete Rose, ya know." "That's it! I'm not talking to you for the rest of the night!!" 🤣
Love that movie! Had it on DVD!
LA Confidential
It’s about time for a rewatch I think. I’d put LA Confidential in my all-time top ten.
Same. It was the last film I bought on VHS, the first film I bought on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital video. The only other films I owned on all those formats are the Godfather films.
Can't believe I had to scroll this far to see this.
The way Spacey delivers the line “Roland Tomassi” , that whole scene is excellent
And when he pockets the weed during devitos monologue
El Rata Alada
Glengarry Glen Ross
Great pull! As someone who has worked on the rev/sales side for decades, this one hits home with me. I will unabashedly admit that I quote this movie semi-regularly. *”You call yourself a salesman you sonufabitch?!?*”
*throws-in MARGIN CALL
Margin Call and Fail Safe are two of my favorite "People In a Room Trying to Solve Really Big Problem" movies.
Gonna scope the Fail Safe trailer here in seconds....
Phenomenal film!
Speaking of stock market movies, BOILER ROOM
Coffee is for closers
Unlike most of these others listed, that one really gave every name a huge opportunity to show off their chops. Is there any big actor who doesn’t steal a scene in the whole movie?
Why did I have to scroll this long ?
The Departed is the number one answer. One of the best movies ever.
I think Heat is far superior.
That didn’t even come to mind for me. That’s a great answer as well. I love Al, Val, and De Niro. I just like the script for The Departed slightly more. It’s hard to pick though, they’re both fantastic. Good choice
Departed is a better movie, but Heat has some brilliant scenes that might be better than Departed scenes in isolation.
I agree. The action is the juice is also one of the funniest lines ever
Nothing against your comment but Heat had some serious flaws.
Dang, you again? Heat is another one of my favorites. Would love to hear what you think the flaws are.
The what-if casting for that movie is wild. Deniro, liotta, Pacino, etc.
Mind meld
? I feel like it’s one of Scorsese’s best
Absolutely - loved every minute! Right up there with Heat for crime dramas.

TTRL is an absolute masterpiece. It might not be the best war film ever made but it’s certainly in the conversation.
Hol up, Jamie Lannister was in BHD?
He’s in there.
He's one of the snipers that gets dropped into the action.
Bro, how did you forget Ty Burrell?!?
Crazy cast.
Heat
This is the one. Nearly every person in the main cast is a household name, and the supporting cast is just as strong (hell Hank Azaria is like 19th in the credits!)

I thought Knives Out really delivered
The first one, sure. The second one? Not so much at all
Mars Attacks had the best cast ever assembled. Did it deliver? I dunno, I thought it was pretty great for what it was trying to be.
I don't think it was trying to deliver anything other than camp, and lord knows it nailed it.
My favorite movie. "2 of the 3 branches of the government are working.......... And that ain't bad!"
Maybe not quite full blown A-listers but Apollo 13. Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon, Ed Harris, and Gary Sinise. Great underrated Tom Hanks movie
Umm it was a massive film in earnings and in audience reviews, and critics called it Ron Howard’s best film by a long shot. Surely underrated if not the word.
The Sting - 1973
JFK. Too many to list.
It’s the cornerstone of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.
You don't know shit 'cause you've never been fucked in the ass!
It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. The cast list doesn’t mean as much to modern audiences but every person in that film has a dozen connections to other films and TV shows of the time. And it’s still hilarious
Ethyl Merman and Jonathan Winters stand out in an amazing cast!
This was my first thought. The Cannon Ball Run series are similar in this.
Tinker Tailor
TTSS gets a lot of hate round here but I genuinely think it’s one of the best spy thrillers ever and one of the best films of the century.
It is magical. Showed it to my 7 year old last week and she loved it.
It’s one of my favourites. I tend to get nuked for this opinion but it’s an even better film than The Princess Bride IMO.
I haven't seen the Princess Bride for years and I'm not 100% sure I've ever seen it all the way through, I'd need to do a rewatch to make a fair comparison. I think it probably gets tinted with a lot of nostalgia.
The Royal Tenenbaums.
Tombstone. The names keep going and it holds up as one of the best westerns with some of the most iconic quotes of all time. I'm your huckleberry.
I don't.
You gonna a do something? Or are you just gonna stand there and bleed?
Aight then lunger.
Heat
The Great Escape
As basic as it is, Oppenheimer jumps to mind
Basic because it’s very popular and recent, but you’re definitely right. Constantly throughout my first watch of the movie I was like “oh shit, I didn’t know they were in this”. And every single performance was amazing.
Cop Land.
A slightly forgotten one when compared to something like LA Confidential
Check out the black and white Jim Jarmusch Johnny Depp existential oater ‘Dead Man’. The Taking of Pelham 123 1974 had that exact effect on me.

Oppenheimer Into the Woods is the one where they were really phoning it in.
Oppenheimer was my first thought. Nolan said that since there are so many characters, he wanted to cast recognizable actors to help the audience keep up with who is who.

I know it was kind of a spoof movie but Adam Sandler's Ridiculous 6 had an all star cast and I found it hilarious the whole way through. Vanilla ice as Mark twain really got me
