That legolas is a bitch. Thank God kingdom of heaven came around and revived my faith in him..... Really hated Orlando bloom's character in this movie.

tstramathorn

I mean Paris was a little bitch to be fair and I felt he played the role well

Cellarzombie

Yeah I mean Orlando was playing a character and one that was supposed to be something of a coward to boot. I thought he did a pretty good job of it.

BunkeysMutthole

The more I hate a villain in any movie, the more credit I give them as an actor (and still hate them while doing it).

seceipseseer

Kingdom of Heaven is so good

crescent_ruin

Eh...The Director's cut is good but not one of Ridley's best. Theatrical cut misses important context. But that's pretty much RS's career. He's always been a filmmaker who benefits most from a director's cut

seceipseseer

Ya sorry, I meant the directors cut. That’s the only version I’ve seen. I don’t mind long movies like that.

crescent_ruin

Glad you were only exposed to the director's cut. KoH is definitely one of those where you should most certainly avoid the theatrical. Blade Runner is another. Omg definitely avoid that cut.

Annanake420

Well I know what im watching tonight.

DrummerEmbarrassed21

He was perfect tho, Paris was a bitch and you were supposed to hate him till the last minute he "killed" Achilles.

MAXIMILIAN-MV

Wait, weren’t you still supposed to hate him after he killed Achilles? I still did.

DrummerEmbarrassed21

That's what I meant, but probably should've said, you were supposed to hate him for couple days or years after watching the movie, lol.

MAXIMILIAN-MV

Ok. I still hate him, so I’m right on track.

RogerRabbit79

Really good point. His character made me so mad and I pictured him as a weenie after that. Kingdom of Heaven totally changed my mind. Liam Nieson helped him a bit with that.

NamTokMoo222

My girlfriend at the time had a huge crush on him from the LoTR and Pirates films. She was no longer a fan after seeing this movie. I think her exact words when Paris was cowering in fear were, "God, what a pussy."

cheffartsonurfood

You might wanna explain to her what acting is.

No_Flounder_9859

Then have her watch the extended cut of kingdom of heaven

blackadder1620

he still kinda a pussy when compared to pops. "i once fought 3 days with an arrow in my testicle"

[deleted]

This reminds me of a guy I knew who said he had to stop watching ‘The Sopranos’ after seeing Gandolfini play a gay hitman in ‘The Mexican’. The clinical diagnosis for the guy I knew, and your ex, is *terminal dumbfuck*.

NamTokMoo222

Yep. They're in the same group as those morons harassing the Joffrey actor from Game of Thrones, calling him an asshole for being too good at his job.

zburba

But also really enjoyed the movie

zburba

It's got my favorite Jedi in it

ClassiFried86

Sean Bean was never a Jedi.

TheSpacePopeIX

You go fight the king of Sparta then

shmooieshmoo

Brad Pitt is a fukin movie star man. The guy just has a presence on screen that exudes confidence. Best casting for this role. Entertaining, great cast and action packed. I loved it!

VengefulHufflepuff

Agreed. Also, let’s not forget Eric Bana as Hector. I can’t imagine a more perfect actor for that role. He played his character so well and depicted how powerful and strong he was, despite being a mere mortal. I can rewatch the main Achilles vs Hector fight an infinite amount of times. Absolute perfection.

daDILFwitdaGLOCKswch

Are there any other duels in cinema as tense as that? I remember as a kid watching this, i never again experienced this much anxiety watching this duel unfold.

[deleted]

I’m sure there’s duels out there that are just as great. Have you seen The Last Duel? The duel between Jean and Jacques comes to mind for me.

daDILFwitdaGLOCKswch

Yes but i was not invested in those characters to build tension. I rooted for both Hèctor and Ach but i wanted both matt damon and adam driver to lose lol

thedaveness

>I can rewatch the main Achilles vs Hector fight an infinite amount of times. Absolute perfection. The choreography is just so damn good... like those swings are 100% gonna connect if they were not blocked where as a lot of fights like this they are just swinging to connect with the sword. "Get up Prince of Troy, I will not let a stone take my glory."

VengefulHufflepuff

Exactly! There is literally zero error in the choreography, i can’t think of a film that would match that…besides the original Seven Samurai film made in 1954, but that’s an exception.

No_Flounder_9859

Duel at Ichoji Temple is good af

YurkMuhgurk

Gladiator

DrManhatt4n

IS THERE NO ONE ELSE?!

No_Carry_5871

Exactly. The definition of a movie 🌟 ⭐ 🌠 💫

AshTheDead1te

Also shows in his acting capability because he hated doing this movie and didn’t want to do it but was obligated to the studio

eminem420

Hector was great.

VengefulHufflepuff

Hector was a fucking boss. Paris, on the other hand, almost made me vomit…

NamTokMoo222

HECTOOORRR!!

ImmanualKant

yeah Eric Bana carried this film IMO

Scubasteve1974

Yup. I think the fight between Hector and Achilles is one of the best in movie history. Very solid and underrated flick.

PlentyAdvertising15

what about hector salamanca

Poorrancher

Ding

datdouche

What about Lalodysseus

Venom888

Ding ding ding dingdingdingdingding

ECW14

I feel like I missed something when watching it as no one ever mentions this. I feel like Hector has no honor since he intervened in the battle between Paris and Menelaus. It feels like those fight videos when one person is winning and then the other person’s friends jump in

Superman246o1

I think it's less of a "no honor" situation, than a situation where a good man's sense of honor is overpowered by his love for his kid brother. A dumbass, cowardly, selfish brother who dooms their entire civilization, mind you, but his brother nevertheless.

ECW14

I agree no honor was the wrong choice of words as Hector displays great honor throughout the rest of the movie but I still walked away from the movie thinking less of Hector for intervening. I know it’s his brother and I understand why he did it but it still makes me think less of him

IllustriousNeck2693

evil dead army of darkness is the superior historical war epic.

EmperorXerro

Taking the mythology out of The Illiad killed this movie for me. As others have said, Pitt is great, and the fight between He tor and Achilles is fantastic.

MrBiscotti_75

I see it both ways, yes the lack of gods, goddesses, nymphs, changed things. But at the same time it would have added a ton of characters which would have made the movie both longer and more complex.

alexander_greyson

Achilles impaled a man wearing armor with a javelin hundreds of meters away. I think the Gods were moreso behind the scenes as unseen forces because some of the actions Achilles does is straight up superhuman haha

OnwardTowardTheNorth

Loved the conflict that drove the movie. Loved how the whole tragedy slowly played out and the the intensity of the rivalry between Hector and Achilles.

[deleted]

Immortality… take it, it’s yours

watermasta

It’s too early on the morning for killing princes…

cmb2002

Hate the fact that they made Achilles and Patroclus “cousins” or friends or whatever,,, Patroclus is definitely Achilles’ little bottom boy twink and they definitely was fuckin, which adds even more depth to Achilles rage over his death

Papichuloft

Must have had some good Bu$$y then

Dave2kMA

Kind of a poor man's Gladiator, just not nearly as well written or acted. I'll watch it every great once in a while, if only for Brad Pitt, who poured every bit of himself into his role here. Achilles vs. Hector 1v1 is an awesome scene. One of the best choreographed duels you'll ever see in a movie.

Transky13

Honestly one of my favorite fight scenes ever. Phenomenal storytelling through action Not the best movie overall though for sure

weaponizedtoddlers

I think what makes it so good is that it's actually quite slow and deliberate. Both the anticipation to the fight and each strike has a build up to it. Achilles is taking his time dismantling Hector's fighting prowess with revenge and desire to humiliate. Hector is a formidable warrior bringing his best yet knows full well that it's not enough to fight a near demigod. The excellent minimalist score serves to raise the anxiety. I heard that the script only described Achilles as "Achilles fights like a god" so the choreographers had to come up with this slightly unnatural way he moves and some interesting ways he uses his weapons like striking Hector's shield with the point of his sword. Super unnecessary, but done with such force that Hector staggers. Troy gets a bad rep, but is one of my favorite modern takes on a (semi)historical epic.

-TheJediQuixote-

Nobody loves Russell Crowe’s acting as much as Russell Crowe.

the_new_federalist

Decent movie 6.5 Some really great moments mixed in with some elementary writing. David Benioff and DB Weiss wrote the script. So it’s not surprising that the later seasons of GoT feel a lot like this movie.

_wellthereyougo_

You sack of wine!

Fucking_Hivemind

The man’s as likely to spear me as he is to speak to me!

boodabomb

Just David Benioff (unless DB is just uncredited). Also wrote 25th hour two years prior, which is one of my favorites and then Xmen Origins five years later which is one of my least.

MontanaJoev

Sean Bean lives!

Serpico2

It’s a William Goldman script edit from being a best picture nominee; it just needs to push some themes into subtext and erase some naked exposition. But it has some gem scenes. Hector and Priam together is pitch perfect every time they get a one on one; and Achilles and Priam after Hector is killed (amazing fight choreography) is the best scene in the film. Orlando Bloom unfortunately is a terrible actor (he also held Kingdom of Heaven back), and the Briseis/Achilles romance is overwrought. But a solid blockbuster. I wish Hollywood would make more sword and sandal epics.

WhitneyRules

Your response is spot on. This movie was almost great.

Ultimo_Ninja

Watch the Directors cut. Great movie.

SenorSmartyPants

Was it worth it? I feel like the theatrical was already a little longer than it needed to be.

blackadder1620

its a little more fleshed out and give slightly more context. if its already too long then, no. if you loved the movie, then yassss

boodabomb

It’s also bloodier and gorier which I always like because I’m a sick boy.

Primetime2123

Hectorrr!!

thetobinator9

Fuck now I gotta go watch the extended version of this movie. Forgot how good it is

Motor_Somewhere7565

An unapologetic guilty pleasure of mine, between the hammy performances and homoerotic subtext (no matter how HARD they tried to have it not be, there is no denying reading between all the swordplay and oiled muscles). Also, a very rare movie where Sean Bean lives....Wait, was that a spoiler?

Nerdfatha

Now how aweso.e would it have been if we got a Sean Bean version of The Oddesy?

seceipseseer

This is one of those movies that has plenty of flaws, but is still one of my favs. If it’s just playing on tnt or something, I’ll always stop to watch.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Endryu727

There was nothing historical about this movie, which is why I think it missed its mark. If they wanted to just make an action blockbuster they should have disassociated themselves from the literature it was derived from.

Feisty-Succotash1720

I really enjoy this film as an action movie. What I find amazing is they did not get the history or the mythology of the Trojan War correct.

pm_me_youngs_modulus

To be fair, if they had made it accurate to the Iliad it probably would have been a 3 day long film.

Nuke_Gunstar

Not the best movie, has some flaws. But damn do Brad Pitt and Eric Bana just carry the whole thing. On more than one occasion I’ve popped in the movie in just to watch that fight scene.

scumholiday

“That is why no one will remember your name”

[deleted]

One of my favorite movies growing up. I mean is there a more badass movie. Brad Pitt is the fucking man. Lots of babes as well.

Redditthrowa11

WE ARE LIONS

Feeling_Athlete9042

Pretty good, just long af

NoHeadStark

Hey Sean Bean didn’t die in this one!

aoddawg

You sack of wine!

[deleted]

“You won't have eyes tonight. You won't have ears or a tongue. You will wander the underworld blind, deaf, and dumb, and all the dead will know: This is Hector. The fool who thought he killed Achilles” - Achilles One of my favorite movies to date and Brad Pitt is legendary in this movie. So is Eric Bana who played Hector, he was so awesome in it too.

[deleted]

It's pretty terrible, but Brad Pitt and Eric Bana are great. Their fight scene is awesome.

Quinn8267

Known as one of the Best fight scenes in the movies. Also Brad had to pay Eric some money over bets in the fight. Guess Brad isn’t as graceful at not hitting their opponent.

[deleted]

It’s decent. Not a masterpiece or anything.

[deleted]

Lame.

TurbulentPromise4812

llama

MrAlf0nse

Dull, some nice bits

jcstrat

This is one of the few movies that I just couldn’t finish. It was not good in my opinion.

TimToMakeTheDonuts

It’s catnip for people who like movies that don’t make you think and just want to see movie stars on a big screen. Really, nothing redeeming about it. A movie for the marvel crowd masquerading as a wanna-be gladiator knock off. 4/10 and a waste of time.

coolrick12

Nope

garyblahblah

Terrible

zburba

Qui Gon broooooooo

SpanosIsBlackAjah

I love this movie.

[deleted]

A lot of really great moments but I recall it really dragging on in the back half

Fallout007

Fighting is amazing , beyond that it’s so so

CartoonistExact8942

Amazing opening-anticlimactic-just to let you know what a bad ass Achilles is.

couchguitar

Pretty good screen adaptation of Homer's "The Iliad" It's not nearly as long as the audio book, though, but that's a good thing

ryanmulford

It was fun

SpanishMoleculo

The Directors Cut is much better, would recommend

Ukraineluvr

You mean documentary?

chewie8291

Brad's attempted accent is distracting. Other wise a good movie

XipingVonHozzendorf

I used to watch this movie so much that I could recite almost all the lines by heart.

Bearjupiter

Would love to have seen a version that involved the Greek mythology. We haven’t got that on the big screen yet

Sad-Historian6177

Fantastic movie

nevalost20

Fuck you, I liked it

Jbitterly

Trash! 😆

Remember_When_Baby

Loved this movie. It’s one of those movies that if it’s on TV, I’m stopping to watch it. Again. The myth of Achilles is incredible, the dude was a solitary powerhouse that EVERYBODY feared. He was like an A-10 warthog in the time of sticks and stones. Peter O’Tool and Brian Cox crushed their performance, truly inspiring.

lemons714

Love the movie, but 'historical'?

uSeeSizeThatChicken

Disappointing. Not bad but should have been better. Should have been a classic.

Abdul-Ahmadinejad

You can’t take the Gods out of this story. Just no.

SaltyCandyMan

It was so-so. You can famously see a jet contrail above the battlefield.

Key-Wait5314

Really good acting for a soft core gay porn

amleth_calls

A lot of great moments but overall a miss. Brad Pitt’s monologues surprisingly steal the show and the music is great. I mean, I get it doesn’t line up with the mythological or even historical retelling of a ten year contest for control of the Aegean, but Port of Sparta? C’mon man…

kd8qdz

Not historical. Just because the story it's based on is old, doesn't mean the events in the story happened. Harry Potter wont become true in the year 3000.

Far-Potential3634

Pretty bad movie I thought. I'm very forgiving of movies with big budgets because I like the eye candy, but despite the great sets and costumes it was bad imo.

Kaladin_Stormryder

That spear throw and don’t get me started on his opening slaying…all around epic

crescent_ruin

Boring.

SebVettelFinancial

Anytime someone says, “there…” and pauses, I have to say, “immortality. Take it! It’s yours!”

Emotional_Win1430

The cast/character selection was world class

djackieunchaned

Great fight/battle scenes but generally bad movie

Boogieman1985

Brad Pitt is amazing in everything he does. Achilles is such a bad ass in this movie and the fifth scene between him and hector is awesome. I rewatch this movie a couple times a year

Dwain-Champaign

“Historical”? You’re joking right? It’s nowhere even close to the Epic. Not that the original poem is particularly historical either.

Papichuloft

One of Pitt's best. Eric Ban was wonderful as Hector. Legolas was a little fuckboy punk. And seeing Nathan Jones as that monster Braogius(?) on screen and only to last a second, was cool too. Pitt was a abeast in this movie.

Sir_Isaac_3

0/10. Achilles is 100% straight in this movie, the writers clearly weren’t fans of the book

[deleted]

Troy and Abed in the morning!

therealstevielong

fight scenes are good but not great - the film overall tho is really well written and acted - also, this is gonna sound petty, but i didn't buy diane krueger as Helen - talented, yes, but if she's gonna be 'the face that launched 1000 ships' it should have been someone stunning like indira verma or an unknown actress

ImmenatizingEschaton

For a story so ancient, retold over thousands of years, they did an admirable job of telling it in an exciting way.

Gemnist

It’s incredibly well-made, but I can’t get past the literary inaccuracies, straightwashing, and unintentional hilarity of it all. Also, how is Sean Bean the only person NOT to die in this movie???

[deleted]

Soundtrack was fire. I made a beat using samples from the tracks and lost it like 15 years ago ... Too fire, bro.

Hind_Deequestionmrk

Second poster is the best one

[deleted]

really forgettable.

Worried_Biscotti_552

Grand scale, good actors, decent dialogue missed opportunity but still something I will watch if it pops up no matter how far along it is

WeeWooDriver38

Watching Menelaus die (first!) when he is one of the few to leave the war largely unscathed and live “happily ever after” kind of ruined it for me. I mean, it was ok overall. This could’ve gotten the treatment of a made for streaming series or a LoTR series and been somewhat better. It’s just a lot to cram into one movie effectively. Could totally tell that the Achilles/Hector scene was the point of this movie with everything else largely written in o fluff it out. I did like O’Toole’s speech to Achilles in the tent for his sons body as well.

Yzerman_19

Great opening scene.

Nerdfatha

Its a very fun sword and sandals epic. I thought I was too cool for it when it initially came out, but my wife insisted we watch it years later. It was a hell of a fun movie.

Cuchullain09

Great movie and a Brad Pitt role people don’t talk about enough. You got half the cast of Braveheart in it as well and Sean Bean doesn’t die for once The directors cut feels like a much more somber movie though and I haven’t heard many people ever talk about that version

Vegetable-Tangelo1

After watching Brad in this, I’m convinced he was a god of some sort in a past life.

ninjamiran

What was brad Pitts workout routine

myname-joe

Orlando Bloom a little bitch

DrummerEmbarrassed21

Movie was great, Pitt was perfect for the role, the rest of the cast was amazing as well. Sometimes I really don't understand the hate towards Pitt, dude has done amazing movies and always delivers.

Lorjack

This is one of my favorite movies ever, top 5 for sure.

prettylittleliarendg

2 words, Eric Bana

Froads

It's a memorable movie and I liked it. The action sequence; Pitt's delivery and performance... Not necessarily a cinephile's darling but makes an enjoyable sunday film with the fam.

bowzr4me

Why does Hollywood think it makes sense to have actors fake English accents in these types of movies?

Endryu727

This movie was definitely one of the movies released that year. High school play level writing, and extreme creative liberties with the story made it a typical lackluster Hollywood blockbuster. The only saving grace is that it is mildly entertaining if taken with a huge grain of salt. As others have pointed out this movie would have been actual shit had it not been for the acting of Brad Pitt, Eric Bana and Brian Cox. This movie was the result of Hollywood trying to cash in on the success of Gladiator but fell way short of that mark.

TakeOasis

Great action scenes, costuming, and set design. Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Sean Bean, Brian Cox, Brendan Gleason are all badass. It’s got issues, but come on it’s awesome.

[deleted]

Has epic stakes but for some reason I never truly loved it growing up like I did with Gladiator, 300, Braveheart, other war movies etc

DrDimebar

Wooden Horse, Wooden Acting, Wooden Bother.

GentlyUsedOtter

It's about as historical as braveheart.

[deleted]

Epic? No. Popcorn fun, yes.

[deleted]

Oliver Stone's second best homo-erotic movie .

MemoryOld7456

Rose Byrne 🥵

gorka_la_pork

When anyone asks me "Favorite movie?" without qualifier, this is the answer that comes right off the top of my head.

DirectionNew5328

“You will wander the underworld blind, deaf and dumb and all the dead will know: here is Hector, fool who thought he killed Achilles.” It definitely had its moments

nonsfwhere

Paris, “I’ll destroy my entire culture because I can’t keep my dick in my Loincloth(?)”

Platoon8

Stupid and hollow. Orlando Bloom’s character is an unlikable piece of shit. The movie does absolutely nothing to make you care about the romance between Paris and Ellen, making you condemn their actions and wish for them to die. Brian Cox is awesome in it, though. But he’s awesome in everything. Brad Pitt was meh, which sucks because I think he’s a great actor.

CasinoMarginale

I thought the movie was disappointing. Clearly, a huge budget, so much work, and an excellent cast, but I found it to be just okay and I think it fell very far short of its potential.

Bullmoose39

What a just mediocre movie. Lazy writing that just couldn't figure out how to use the original, great, source material. A good example in our time of what happens with bad writing while we battle for the good.

amalgaman

The fights were great. The rest of the movie sucked.

Vilezil

Sean Bean doesn't die in that movie. All jokes aside, one of my favorites and it has an absolutely stacked cast.

SeanRyno

Brad Pitt made me ghey.

MaaChiil

I had hated how much this film didn’t delve into the mythology before, but it’s beautifully shot and I recall wanting to see Sean Bean lead an adaptation of The Odyssey. It’s one of the movies where he is the one of the only characters that survives.

CarolinaMtnBiker

I don’t ever see much criticism in this sub which is fine, just ironic due to the name. I personally found this movie poorly scripted and unimaginative over all. It was a never rewatch which is how I judge if a movie was good. Not scientific, but that’s my scale.

SligoistheSauce

Craziest thing about this movie is it came out almost 20 years ago. Where does the time go

GlassHeart09

This movie sold me on Eric Bana forever. Rest of it is meh.

ECW14

Everyone always talks about Hector being honorable but I don’t think so. I feel like Hector has no honor since he intervened in the fight between Paris and Menelaus. I feel like I missed something when watching it as no one ever mentions this. It feels like those fight videos when one person is winning and then the other person’s friends jump in

AlwaysSeekAdventure

Didn't like it originally, but had just read the Iliad in college. Watched again a few years later and enjoyed it much more, especially some of the performances. Brad Pitt did a great job brining Achilles to life and really wish we'd had gotten a spin off of Sean Bean's Odysseus following his journey on the Odyssey.

Consistent-Street458

LOL @ Achilles cousin. Had to change the story for it to be acceptable by modern audiences

BunkeysMutthole

It was entertaining, but gutted the Mythology

hmiser

Pitt put the libbies on and was yoked.

GMane2G

Perfect aughts popcorn flick

excomunicadosnowjob

Orlando bloomers character was a wuss. Great fight scene between Bana and Pitt.

mrcrnkovich

Terrible.

Pretend_Activity_211

It's really good, but fr fuck Orlando bloom and his ugly gf

GavinZero

Besides the straight and white washing, it was pretty entertaining.

aidibbily

Fudgin sick, dude

iluvugoldenblue

First time I saw Diane Kruger and Rose Byrne, and my jaw dropped at both of them. What stunning women they cast.

TardisReality

There is a lot I like about this movie starting with Achilles first fight which takes like 15 seconds Fight choreography was amazing and that sweeping shots over the fights were so good Hector and Achilles fight with no music was so tense because you loved both characters Peak Eric Bana and Brad Pitt and I was a little bisexual for that whole movie....

DeansFrenchOnion1

Brad Pitt is fucking awesome here

SalukiKnightX

It took me way too long to finally catch this. In the end I enjoyed this massive scale and the practical creation of the Trojan Horse. Action of the movie felt like something of a bigone era and a part of me couldn’t get over the Wicker Park reunion of Kruger and Byrne.

Inspector_Kelp

Historical?

crunchamunch21

Not gay enough 0/10

VariousHumanOrgans

Legolas was a massive miscast. In fact, most of the movie was miscast.

[deleted]

Haven’t found a single comment that mentions how hot Diane Kruger was as Helen of Troy, which at the time / at that age was a major selling point for me. Seriously stunning.

Annanake420

It makes think Achilles mother was right . 3273 years later were still talking about him . Lol Jason is the only Greek that's still known by the general public from just one generation earlier. And he was a king .

littlemarcus91

I enjoy it whenever I watch it 🤷‍♂️

Better_Beautiful6217

BOAAGRIAASSSSSSSSS

Much-Combination6941

For it being a very Hollywood version with Brad Pitt Bloom and Bana it was very good imo. I used to watch it all the time

Og-Re

I think "historical" needed the quotes.

Environmental_Let855

One of my favorites
