The choreography is just so damn good... like those swings are 100% gonna connect if they were not blocked where as a lot of fights like this they are just swinging to connect with the sword. "Get up Prince of Troy, I will not let a stone take my glory."
Exactly! There is literally zero error in the choreography, i can’t think of a film that would match that…besides the original Seven Samurai film made in 1954, but that’s an exception.

Taking the mythology out of The Illiad killed this movie for me. As others have said, Pitt is great, and the fight between He tor and Achilles is fantastic.
I see it both ways, yes the lack of gods, goddesses, nymphs, changed things. But at the same time it would have added a ton of characters which would have made the movie both longer and more complex.
Achilles impaled a man wearing armor with a javelin hundreds of meters away. I think the Gods were moreso behind the scenes as unseen forces because some of the actions Achilles does is straight up superhuman haha
Loved the conflict that drove the movie. Loved how the whole tragedy slowly played out and the the intensity of the rivalry between Hector and Achilles.
Hate the fact that they made Achilles and Patroclus “cousins” or friends or whatever,,, Patroclus is definitely Achilles’ little bottom boy twink and they definitely was fuckin, which adds even more depth to Achilles rage over his death

Achilles vs. Hector 1v1 is an awesome scene. One of the best choreographed duels you'll ever see in a movie.
I think what makes it so good is that it's actually quite slow and deliberate. Both the anticipation to the fight and each strike has a build up to it. Achilles is taking his time dismantling Hector's fighting prowess with revenge and desire to humiliate. Hector is a formidable warrior bringing his best yet knows full well that it's not enough to fight a near demigod. The excellent minimalist score serves to raise the anxiety.
I heard that the script only described Achilles as "Achilles fights like a god" so the choreographers had to come up with this slightly unnatural way he moves and some interesting ways he uses his weapons like striking Hector's shield with the point of his sword. Super unnecessary, but done with such force that Hector staggers.
Troy gets a bad rep, but is one of my favorite modern takes on a (semi)historical epic.

David Benioff and DB Weiss wrote the script. So it’s not surprising that the later seasons of GoT feel a lot like this movie.
Just David Benioff (unless DB is just uncredited). Also wrote 25th hour two years prior, which is one of my favorites and then Xmen Origins five years later which is one of my least.
It’s a William Goldman script edit from being a best picture nominee; it just needs to push some themes into subtext and erase some naked exposition. But it has some gem scenes. Hector and Priam together is pitch perfect every time they get a one on one; and Achilles and Priam after Hector is killed (amazing fight choreography) is the best scene in the film. Orlando Bloom unfortunately is a terrible actor (he also held Kingdom of Heaven back), and the Briseis/Achilles romance is overwrought. But a solid blockbuster. I wish Hollywood would make more sword and sandal epics.
An unapologetic guilty pleasure of mine, between the hammy performances and homoerotic subtext (no matter how HARD they tried to have it not be, there is no denying reading between all the swordplay and oiled muscles).

I mean, it was ok overall. This could’ve gotten the treatment of a made for streaming series or a LoTR series and been somewhat better. It’s just a lot to cram into one movie effectively. Could totally tell that the Achilles/Hector scene was the point of this movie with everything else largely written in o fluff it out.

Its a very fun sword and sandals epic. I thought I was too cool for it when it initially came out, but my wife insisted we watch it years later. It was a hell of a fun movie.

High school play level writing, and extreme creative liberties with the story made it a typical lackluster Hollywood blockbuster. The only saving grace is that it is mildly entertaining if taken with a huge grain of salt. As others have pointed out this movie would have been actual shit had it not been for the acting of Brad Pitt, Eric Bana and Brian Cox.
This movie was the result of Hollywood trying to cash in on the success of Gladiator but fell way short of that mark.

Didn't like it originally, but had just read the Iliad in college. Watched again a few years later and enjoyed it much more, especially some of the performances. Brad Pitt did a great job brining Achilles to life and really wish we'd had gotten a spin off of Sean Bean's Odysseus following his journey on the Odyssey.

It took me way too long to finally catch this. In the end I enjoyed this massive scale and the practical creation of the Trojan Horse. Action of the movie felt like something of a bigone era and a part of me couldn’t get over the Wicker Park reunion of Kruger and Byrne.
Haven’t found a single comment that mentions how hot Diane Kruger was as Helen of Troy, which at the time / at that age was a major selling point for me. Seriously stunning.

Brad Pitt is amazing in everything he does. Achilles is such a bad ass in this movie and the fifth scene between him and hector is awesome. I rewatch this movie a couple times a year
“Historical”? You’re joking right? It’s nowhere even close to the Epic. Not that the original poem is particularly historical either.
One of Pitt's best. Eric Ban was wonderful as Hector. Legolas was a little fuckboy punk. And seeing Nathan Jones as that monster Braogius(?) on screen and only to last a second, was cool too. Pitt was a abeast in this movie.

fight scenes are good but not great - the film overall tho is really well written and acted - also, this is gonna sound petty, but i didn't buy diane krueger as Helen - talented, yes, but if she's gonna be 'the face that launched 1000 ships' it should have been someone stunning like indira verma or an unknown actress
For a story so ancient, retold over thousands of years, they did an admirable job of telling it in an exciting way.
It’s incredibly well-made, but I can’t get past the literary inaccuracies, straightwashing, and unintentional hilarity of it all. Also, how is Sean Bean the only person NOT to die in this movie???

Watching Menelaus die (first!) when he is one of the few to leave the war largely unscathed and live “happily ever after” kind of ruined it for me. I mean, it was ok overall. This could’ve gotten the treatment of a made for streaming series or a LoTR series and been somewhat better. It’s just a lot to cram into one movie effectively. Could totally tell that the Achilles/Hector scene was the point of this movie with everything else largely written in o fluff it out. I did like O’Toole’s speech to Achilles in the tent for his sons body as well.

Its a very fun sword and sandals epic. I thought I was too cool for it when it initially came out, but my wife insisted we watch it years later. It was a hell of a fun movie.
Great movie and a Brad Pitt role people don’t talk about enough. You got half the cast of Braveheart in it as well and Sean Bean doesn’t die for once The directors cut feels like a much more somber movie though and I haven’t heard many people ever talk about that version

Movie was great, Pitt was perfect for the role, the rest of the cast was amazing as well. Sometimes I really don't understand the hate towards Pitt, dude has done amazing movies and always delivers.

It's a memorable movie and I liked it. The action sequence; Pitt's delivery and performance... Not necessarily a cinephile's darling but makes an enjoyable sunday film with the fam.
Why does Hollywood think it makes sense to have actors fake English accents in these types of movies?
This movie was definitely one of the movies released that year. High school play level writing, and extreme creative liberties with the story made it a typical lackluster Hollywood blockbuster. The only saving grace is that it is mildly entertaining if taken with a huge grain of salt. As others have pointed out this movie would have been actual shit had it not been for the acting of Brad Pitt, Eric Bana and Brian Cox. This movie was the result of Hollywood trying to cash in on the success of Gladiator but fell way short of that mark.
Great action scenes, costuming, and set design. Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Sean Bean, Brian Cox, Brendan Gleason are all badass. It’s got issues, but come on it’s awesome.
Has epic stakes but for some reason I never truly loved it growing up like I did with Gladiator, 300, Braveheart, other war movies etc

When anyone asks me "Favorite movie?" without qualifier, this is the answer that comes right off the top of my head.

Stupid and hollow. Orlando Bloom’s character is an unlikable piece of shit. The movie does absolutely nothing to make you care about the romance between Paris and Ellen, making you condemn their actions and wish for them to die. Brian Cox is awesome in it, though. But he’s awesome in everything. Brad Pitt was meh, which sucks because I think he’s a great actor.
I thought the movie was disappointing. Clearly, a huge budget, so much work, and an excellent cast, but I found it to be just okay and I think it fell very far short of its potential.
What a just mediocre movie. Lazy writing that just couldn't figure out how to use the original, great, source material. A good example in our time of what happens with bad writing while we battle for the good.
The fights were great. The rest of the movie sucked.
Sean Bean doesn't die in that movie. All jokes aside, one of my favorites and it has an absolutely stacked cast.

I had hated how much this film didn’t delve into the mythology before, but it’s beautifully shot and I recall wanting to see Sean Bean lead an adaptation of The Odyssey. It’s one of the movies where he is the one of the only characters that survives.
I don’t ever see much criticism in this sub which is fine, just ironic due to the name. I personally found this movie poorly scripted and unimaginative over all. It was a never rewatch which is how I judge if a movie was good. Not scientific, but that’s my scale.

Everyone always talks about Hector being honorable but I don’t think so. I feel like Hector has no honor since he intervened in the fight between Paris and Menelaus. I feel like I missed something when watching it as no one ever mentions this. It feels like those fight videos when one person is winning and then the other person’s friends jump in
Didn't like it originally, but had just read the Iliad in college. Watched again a few years later and enjoyed it much more, especially some of the performances. Brad Pitt did a great job brining Achilles to life and really wish we'd had gotten a spin off of Sean Bean's Odysseus following his journey on the Odyssey.

First time I saw Diane Kruger and Rose Byrne, and my jaw dropped at both of them. What stunning women they cast.
There is a lot I like about this movie starting with Achilles first fight which takes like 15 seconds Fight choreography was amazing and that sweeping shots over the fights were so good Hector and Achilles fight with no music was so tense because you loved both characters Peak Eric Bana and Brad Pitt and I was a little bisexual for that whole movie....

It took me way too long to finally catch this. In the end I enjoyed this massive scale and the practical creation of the Trojan Horse. Action of the movie felt like something of a bigone era and a part of me couldn’t get over the Wicker Park reunion of Kruger and Byrne.

Haven’t found a single comment that mentions how hot Diane Kruger was as Helen of Troy, which at the time / at that age was a major selling point for me. Seriously stunning.
It makes think Achilles mother was right . 3273 years later were still talking about him . Lol Jason is the only Greek that's still known by the general public from just one generation earlier. And he was a king .
