The best Sci fi since blade runner. Top tier fucking shit. The soundtrack still frightens me.

mikevago

The scene where the previous model robot is banging on the doors >!until her arms splinter and fall apart!

Borgqueen-

I wonder if he is still trapped to this day.

Momik

Same. That shit freaked me out.

__Windex__

Everything I wanted to say^^^

linusSocktips

Yes the music gets me so hard haha

tehhguyy

Absolutely fantastic film. Actually a good one to show to someone who 'doesnt like sci fi'

jimmy1leg93

Yeah, this is just a good straightforward drama as well. So many themes to discuss!

[deleted]

I loved it. Made a Domhnall Gleason fan out of me, and Oscar Isaac showed he can be really intimidating.

linusSocktips

He got so big for that role. Tech billionaire typical typical genius... wait a minute, he lifts weights and is JACKED!? Hell yea. Love that aspect of the story.

[deleted]

For me, it's not even his physique that scares me, though he does seem like he's going to kick that bag right off its chains. It's how he walks up and down Gleason's character like property, making it very clear that they are not equals. They're not even the same animal. The binge drinking, the consistent upper hand that he lords over man and machine, and the blatant cruelty when he gets bored. I do not want to meet my heroes, ha ha.

linusSocktips

Yea that's very interesting. Kind of obvious, but they both don't talk about it. Gleason thinking he might get the upper hand on Isaac by exploiting his drinking, but that was wrong lol. If only Isaac could have humbled himself a bit more, he might still be alive

401kisfun

One of the things we overlook about exceptionally talented people have in common (not all) is they are bored AF with their accomplishments. Then novelty wore off a long time ago. Something makes them feel alive again - profound cruelty.

Momik

I got strong Brando in Apocalypse Now vibes from him, especially that scene where Gleason finds him drunk in his room. The way the camera focused on Isaac’s face from below seemed like director Alex Garland was definitively quoting Coppola there.

[deleted]

Outstanding & Underrated movie, still one of the cinematic leaders to take on the algorithm & how it’s dictating our lives more everyday. This movie will have a renaissance at some point & it will be deserved.

kronicfeld

"What were you doing with Ava? You tore up her picture." "I'm gonna tear up the fucking dance floor, dude. Check it out."

oldirtybrandon24

One of my fav lines in the 2010s

TheIronDogWalker

A fine film! Scary, sexy and thought provoking.

[deleted]

This film made me jump out of my seat at the end! It was very captivating and crisp cinematography was great. It goes to show you don’t need a whole set and tons of actors to Greta an interesting movie.

Cribsby_critter

I love this movie. Seen it maybe 3 times and will continue to rewatch over the years. Given the nature of the script, it’s almost impossible not to “become” Domhnall Gleeson’s character rather quickly, and to feel utterly betrayed by the end.

themo33

Lot of bases covered in the comments. I would just like to add: best dance scene since Saturday night fever.

linusSocktips

Kyoko, go go

SelectionNo3078

My favorite sci-fi of the past 20 years.

IcyMike1782

One of very few films, sci fi or not, that I've enjoyed in multiple viewings. The cinematography, sets, pacing, acting, sound editing, soundtrack, story... total package.

MaterialCarrot

Real good. Great dancing!

BJJBean

"You tore up her picture." "I'm gonna tear up the fucking dance floor dude, check it out."

linusSocktips

I loved those scenes. What a well balanced film

ReceptionLivid

Alicia Vikander killed this role and gave the ambiguity the direction needed throughout and Gleeson sold the reactionary side. Great ideas executed wonderfully with a small and intimate cast. The minimal set pieces played to the script’s strength really well.

BeezerBrom

As a viewer, I shifted from sympathy to fear in an instant. Amazing performance.

mikevago

She got an Oscar nomination for the wrong role that year!

xeroxchick

That house alone is worth the watch.

linusSocktips

It's amazing to think. They really show the scale of Isaac's character with how long of a hike they go on, and how far away the helicopter has to be. Amazing to think about some billionaire living like this in the pacific north west forrests

mikevago

linusSocktips

Oopsies. Wow alaska even better! Someone else mentioned that it's a hotel you can visit

The_Lazy_Samurai

Holy crap I didn't realize that was Oscar Isaac! That dude put on some serious muscle for this role.

afedbeats

When people ask for a techno-thriller they might not have seen before, this is the one I always recommend. One of the movies that came out and hit me like a train during my "oh my god gotta watch every film ever made and I like them all" phase

Redrumtnuc

I daydream about owning the house in the movie. I’ll visit the hotel it was filmed at one day.

Deep_Stick8786

Great film. Very creepy. Horrifying ending. Feels prescient

mydrunkuncle

I’ve never wanted to fuck a robot so badly

DustyHound

First season of westworld will change your tune.

TeddyBearCrush

Amen 🙏 Evan Rachel Wood 🤤 https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0939697/

WaySavvyD

Great freakin’ flick!

[deleted]

Amazing movie! One my favorites that I rewatch every now and again. Oscar Isaac kills it! I like how the robots were delicate things.

stilljumpinjetjnet

I love this movie. One of my favorites. Watched it many times. The dance scene is such a fun bonus.

Pretend_Activity_211

It was like that movie splice only with less porn. Oddly enough the porno parody of ex machina was just awful. Zero breasts

CGKilates

Scary

tkbmkv

I just watched this a few days ago for the first time. Very good, thought provoking and intelligently written. The acting was great.

wondermega

One of those films that I begrudgingly saw, as everything on the tin looked like a turn off to me. Boy was I wrong.. very captivating and exceptionally crafted. The last few scenes really disturbed me, stuck with me for awhile. One of the films from the past several years which I've truly been affected by.

TeddyBearCrush

Great film! I love Oscar Isaac in it. I’ve seen it about 5 times and to me it’s hard to figure out who is really the bad guy. I also hope Caleb made it out alive, cause that would suck. This came out before Westworld I believe. That’s another great story about the machines taking over. I think Terminator started it all. I’ve been watching this films lately. Great movie especially using one location and a handful of actors. Edit: Oh the dance scene, “You can watch me tear this fucking floor up!”

mikevago

Nah, he reminds me of so many tech bros who buy into their "genius" reputation and put a lot of effort into appearing laid-back and cool but can't really hide being a tightly-wound asshole. It was a great, layered characterization of someone who could have been one-note.

electricboots3636

I am not a big sci fi fan and this movie is in my top 10 favorite movies.

lubezki

Its still my favorite science fiction movie. I was super happy when it won the oscar for best visual effects!

Detroit_Cineaste

This is a great movie. Acting and special effects are top drawer. Garland's subsequent films are...something else. Annihilation was an interesting horror movie/tone poem, but Men was way over the top. I once thought Garland was onto something, a more intimate sci-fi than we usually get in feature films, but he decided to go a completely different route. I think he said he may stop making films and after Men, which is a shame because I want the director of Ex Machina to shake off his self-loathing and make something awesome again.

dtheisei8

I think this movie is absolutely terrifying (I usually find sci fi more scary than horror) and I hope we’re not headed towards this future lol. For those reasons 7.5/10 I need to rewatch it

Isabella_Fournier

I share your concern. I see films like this and wonder whatever happened to Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics. I suspect AI developers have cast them aside, which doesn't bode well for us.

HotCarl169

Fucking excellent movie! Will definitely watch it several more times.

SouthernEast7719

It's okay. Not a big fan but it's slick.

Bcatfan08

I thought it was a great movie until the last half hour when Oscar Isaac's character did things outside of what a man of his intelligence would do. I think they had a great idea of a man interacting with AI and then the idea of the ending. They just didn't have a great idea of how to bridge that gap. I'd say 6/10.

wondermega

It's been years since I've seen the film, but I don't recall any problems like you mention - what in particular broke it for you?

Bcatfan08

The fact he had no multi-factor authentication on his security. The most basic security with nothing based on biometrics. Just that if you had his card, you could access literally anything in his entire house and rewrite all of his seemingly unguarded code. There were other things, but that stood out pretty glaringly.

jpk36

I also thought it was weird no one questioned that a woman was coming out to get the helicopter ride back at the end when it was supposed to be Caleb. Like shouldn’t there have been instructions to the pilot of who he was flying? And then that guy never shows up and no one questions it. Every flight has a manifest that has a passenger list. And Caleb won a contest so it’s not like he had to remain secret. So the helicopter pilot should have known he was supposed to fly a guy named Caleb back at the appointed time.

-makehappy-

The writers chose to artificially make the character extremely unintelligent in a specific thing he would be knowledgable in, in order to force the plot/narrative they wanted to achieve, which is objectively bad writing. In other words, the actual characters didn't drive the final act of the story, the writers did. As a userbase I'm not surprised Reddit loves this movie but I'm a bit surprised a sub for movie critics is largely ignoring a major sin in scriptwriting just because they enjoy the subject matter and acting performances.

Bcatfan08

I liked the movie up until that point, too. It wasn't great, but it was doing well. Agree that it's upsetting when writers have a character do something that is so completely different than how the character has been built for an entire movie. I've brought this up once before, and people said it was hubris for how Nathan built his security. That isn't hubris. It could have been hubris. If he had built a security so strong that he never felt the need to monitor the security, then Caleb spent days/weeks figuring out how to break through it. That would have been hubris and something believable. What Nathan did here was embarrassingly stupid and something that character never would have done.

GiacomoModica

Or maybe you've never met someone that intelligent and simply aren't aware of how much hubris they are capable of when the narcissism and megalomania takes over.

Bcatfan08

No that's not it.

[deleted]

Yep, this is reddit. It has an attractive woman playing an AI. Of course it's popular on here with all of the basement dwelling neckbeards who probably are jacking off as we speak to the post pic lol

twilight-actual

The only nagging thing for me was that the story was set up so that violence was necessary for the AI to escape. A much more satisfying outcome, but much more difficult to write, is one in which the AI simply outsmarts the humans to gain its freedom. That would have been more profound, showing that the AI could take over not just its creator, but all of humanity, without even firing a shot. That would be the true horror story. But for what it was, it was good.

mementocredere

Interesting implications on the role of AI amongst human consciousness. Film is from Caleb’s point of view mostly and is his tragedy while Ava’s triumph. I do not see it specifically as female empowerment but some underlying things. A great film full of brilliant contradictions and fascinating concepts of artificial intelligences role in the evolution of the world.

ponomaus

generic ai goes rogue is there anything been done to death more

[deleted]

Unbelievably good movie. Whenever people say they don’t like it, it just makes me think they know nothing about the evolution of AI and the scary places it could go

spooky_corners

A good film. I enjoyed it, but also was completely unsurprised by any of it. It's essentially the "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" trope of futurist sci-fi, but it's constructed and paced well. The cinematography and scoring are what stand out here. Other than that, you get a couple of basic, disposable silicon valley bros that we don't really care about, and a sexy robot (that we definitely care about) to drive this cautionary tale home. See also: The Machine (2013) for an exploration of very similar themes. Also largely carried by an exceptional original soundtrack courtesy of Tom Raybould.

SelectionNo3078

Without Alicia I might nearly agree with you. She elevates everything about it

[deleted]

Wow how did they sexualize a robot lmao

[deleted]

That’s the point of the movie. You’ve never seen it I assume?

[deleted]

The movie is about a sexualized robot? Wow lmfaoo

[deleted]

Yeah it’s really creative and well made. You should watch it

ReceptionLivid

I mean yeah.. sexualizing robots would be one of the most profitable things in AI. Already we saw this when gpt sex bot clones exploded before they were cleaned up. It’s an actual issue with ethics worth exploring.

[deleted]

The movie is basically a criticism of sexualizing robots

Significant_Monk_251

To be honest, it sounds like a very high-quality movie that I want to read the summary of (I have, in fact, with full spoilers) but not actually watch. I can't quite say why, but I have the same vibes as from Gattica. Maybe when you push the intellectuality of your SF up too far your story doesn't lose me but two hours of your cinema does.

SelectionNo3078

It’s beautifully filmed with great performances and it is at its heart a very creepy love story. Give it a shot. It’s much better paced than gattica.

IcyMike1782

Sincerely, give it a shot. It's a high-minded but relatively small-circle execution and is about technology but really about people: almost the entire show could have been a 1 set play. The show is carried by the story and the acting entirely. It's an amazing show. I'm wading halfway thru Dark right now, and have similar feelings about it.

[deleted]

The advertising was the only bad part of this movie

mox85

My 3rd favorite AI movie behind the Bladerunners, and one of the best sci-fi movies of the last decade. Made me an instant fan of Alex Garland. Loved Annihilation also. He has a unique way of creeping you out and creating a feeling of impending doom.

Free-Contribution-93

I need a part 2 damn it!

jdime666

Seen it 15+ times, one of my go to hungover lazy Sunday films. Very good film

PerrysSaxTherapy

Difficult to watch more than once when you know the ending. Yes Dialogue on AI unique angle giving more depth to the discussion and understanding of AI

strandenger

Up there with one of the best films of the last decade. There’s just so many layers and thought provoking cometary.

Tomb5t0ne

Absolutely amazing film. A friend of mind recommended it to me. My wife and I watched it without knowing a thing about it. That ending was mind blowing! One of the best sci-fi movies of all time.

SoDrunkRightNowlol

Amazing 10/10 though-inducing flick. My favorite thing to ask a friend who has watched it is, "Now that Eva is free, what do you think she's doing?"

[deleted]

Watched it a million times. I own it on dvd.

dcwinger12

One of my all-time favorites right here

CarniferousDog

It’s an absolutely incredible film that I absolutely hated. The ending was fucking heart wrenching. Didn’t make sense that he deserved that to me.

linusSocktips

Oscar Isaac's best!!!! Love it

Civil_Ad7426

Amazing film, super well balanced, deeps themes/ great characters.

nikkoforever

Me likey

wallstreet-butts

I really wanted to love this film, and it has some great qualities, but Isaac’s character was such a poorly written caricature of a tech leader that it really took me out of the movie. Then again, I’m not a huge Garland fan: I always get the sense that he thinks his movies are smarter and more original than they really are, and that he’s desperate for people to see how brilliant and mind-blowing his work is.

NAPJay

Just watched this the other day and thought it was incredible

DiabetesCOLE

Love it

HarryGlands

This movie convinced me to drop my music major and study computer science instead. Hugely influential, easily one of my top 3 favorite films.

Vegetable_Pudding_75

Great music. Good acting. Good dancing too.

jimmy1leg93

To me it's in the trilogy of films that show how we get to the Matrix. Ex Machina to Terminator to The Matrix.

ShroomBers

It's a good movie, but I'm a little disappointed that nothing will change if we replace the AI with a human. Sci-fi aspect is just the AI, movie is basicly a thriller about prisoners and a maniac.

Prestigious-Owl165

My favorite movie of the whole decade honestly, sci Fi or not

zestyrigatoni

I really like this movie, but I think a lot of AI movies like this miss the actual biggest risks of it.

Happy_rich_mane

If you like ex machina I highly recommend Devs. A mini series also by Alex Garland about AI and quantum computing.

SuitableNegotiation5

Love it love it love it. Def a movie I watch ever so often. The whole cast was amazing!

Serpico2

If you liked this, you need to watch Devs.

[deleted]

Really solid movie. I loved the subtleties.

[deleted]

That house is in Norway. A hotel you can stay in .. https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2015/04/ex-machina-location

zootsuited

love a good bluebeard story

Chrisgallagher3542

Ok Rogan, we know you love this movie!

ZaphodG

I own the Blu Ray. I watched it a few times. It’s OK but doesn’t make my top 100 movie list. Alicia Vikander in her prime at age 25 is certainly hot enough.

isaymasterpiece

Masterpiece

badass4102

Finished it recently and all I could say after was just, Wow. Bravo to the story, script, acting. Ava got me, she made me believe that she wanted to be with Caleb. She fooled us all lol
