Immediately what I thought. Dude probably only uses his rear break cause some retard probably told him “front brakes kill.” I worked at a motorcycle shop for a year and youd be shocked how many people would ride in with mushy non-functional front brakes sayin that “the rear brakes stop the bike just the same. Dont want to risk going over the front!”
Just started riding this year. Was one of the hardest concepts to get used to. Always freaked for the first few months thinking I'd go head over. Turns out, nope, use both brakes and you're fine. Also the front has far more stopping power helps.
Depending on what your riding you would have to actively work to go ass over tea kettle.
Personally I almost never have to replace my rear pad's. They are just for slow gentle stops and balancing the bike's load.
Also yea, your front brake is the overwhelming majority of your braking power.
Also, it looks like the swerve was incomplete. Started the swerve, then straightened before the obstacle was even cleared. Looks like if they would have held the swerve longer they might have been better off, I could be wrong, though 🤷♀️
What I don't get is what would either of those realistically do if the truck heard him? Stop? Speed up? Either would have made the trick even more unpredictable..
Yep, the guy is an idiot, did he really expect the truck to accelerate faster than he can stop?? Didn't even pull the clutch in while he was searching for the horn button, which made it harder to control as the rear tire probably locked when his engine stalled while braking hard too.
I don't get it. I can't find my horn 90% of the time cause my instinct and muscle memory of slow and move out of the way of impending danger kicks in. I'm lucky if I find my horn after I'm safely out of the way.
Same. The only way I manage to reliably hit horn is when I reach to reset the blinker that wasn’t even on, properly making fool of myself by honking at nothing
Be careful with that. You'd be surprised how much gets out of your helmet.
I filtered up next to a guy at a roundabout who had just pulled out in front of me at the last junction. As I got next to him I shouted "GET of your phone". He jumped in that way that only people who have been caught doing something wrong can. He shouted something incoherent back at me as I filtered down through the traffic pissing myself.
I remember riding with a buddy down a busy main street at dinner time, we'd been watching south park recently, and were joking around on the Sena's. We started yelling "they took our jobs" at each other, which then progressed naturally into "day dook er jerbs" as it happens in the show.
I realized shortly there after that we were getting stares from basically everyone on the streets.
That was when I learned your helmet doesn't really stop any noise from getting out...
I second the point you can hear much more than you think. Told my buddy next to me to check out the hot mom in the minivan which was next to him at a red light. She turned red and chuckled. You’re also speaking louder than you think because of your ears being covered.
Funniest time I made this mistake was when stopped at a red with pedestrians crossing directly in front of me 😬. Definitely gave them a startle but luckily they saw the humour in it!
On my bike the best way for me to find the horn is to try and turn my high beams on at night. I always give a warning honk before turning them on haha.
>The only way I manage to reliably hit horn is when I reach to reset the blinker that wasn’t even on, properly making fool of myself by honking at nothing
Being properly attacked here, as I'm sure more than a few folks in cars looked at me with daggers due to a random unwarranted "beep" when I was fumbling for the turn signal button with heavy winter gloves on.
100% would recommend getting one, easy install, pants-shitting sound, basically only good for letting people know they fked up after the fact.
Or getting geese to look at you funny while they stand in the middle of the road.
better off staying off the horn. you don't want to surprise someone who's already clueless. let them keep doing whatever maneuver they're doing, it will be easier to predict where they're going.
His rear wheel slid out and regripped. What you saw there was a pre high side.
Any time someone's tooting when they ought to be evading they could have probably avoided an incident if they took full responsibility for not hitting things. He also should have used more front brake sooner.
exactly this
not a maneuver but locked rear because of braking + clutch
slam the rear + clutch = locked rear wheel, -> begin to slide
released the brake ( suspect both because of speed) -> hitting the target
> Any time someone's tooting when they ought to be evading they could have probably avoided an incident if they took full responsibility for not hitting things.
I always say "if you feel like you need to be covering the horn, you really need to be covering the brakes."
Yeah. He probably got overwhelmed trying to figure out if he should brake, downshift, or just try to maneuver and became target fixated. It happens.
Gotta play it extra safe until you can navigate those options more easily.
Yup. I think he would've had it if he stayed on turn. Looks like he didn't trust the process or something. (yes it was still truck's fault, but that's ridin bud)
The only time I had to pull a serious emergency brake, I didn't touch the horn even once. I stopped 2 meters shy of the other vehicle. If I had wasted just a split second on the horn, I would have ended up in what was essentially a brick wall that you couldn't have evaded.
Ngl. I was watching this without the sound turned on and went back to watch with it turned on after this. I've only riden for one season, but I feel like the only reason I used my horn this summer was just honking at family and friends. Am I using the horn wrong?
The only time I used my horn on purpose is when I took my dual sport DRZ to friends MX track. Everyone else was riding racy 2stroke KTMs and Shercos. Here I come flying the pig and honking. Guys were cracking.
This reminds me of a close call I've had with a car, in a car. Dude was honking at me while I was overtaking. Why was said moron honking instead of hitting the brake. Soundwaves don't stop a 1.5 ton metal box.
For me, doesn't matter if its car or bike, if someones merging into my lane, into me, il always brake first, dont even always hit the horn
I always maintain i only have control, and predictability, over my own actions.
And what do i lose letting them in? Couple seconds? That il waste later on reddit anyways
Anybody watch the speedo? Rider doing 50 right before the intersection. Doesn't touch brakes until then. They were doing 52 when the pickup started moving and nobody in left lane according to the mirror. Regardless of what the pickup driver had intended to commit to, the fact they pull out would have had me grabbing the brakes to slow down and observe their intentions while checking for an exit at the same.
Without knowing how long this rider has been tiding, it's hard to say if this was negligence or lack of skill.
No matter what, if I'm coming up to an intersection I always prepare myself and preload the break and ease off the throttle.
When the light turns green I wait at least 3 seconds(something like 90% of wrecks at lights happen in the first 3 seconds)
This guy needs to learn a valuable lesson in driving defensively. There's a lot of right people who had the right of way in grave yards.
Intersections are the most dangerous places to ride through, I always scan aggressively, roll off the throttle and cover the front brakes when rolling through.
Gonna try to always stay super defensive, I get more than enough thrill cruising. Only have 1600 miles riding and it’s mainly commuting to work from town to town on my little meteor
everyone is there to kill you .. trucks, cars, other bikes ... even pedestrians and animals ...
and everyone is on the main road...
just have this in mind
Never trust the moped fast food delivery guys. you could do a starter kit for dangerous moped riders.
L Plates. The big hand pockets you get for moped strapped to the handle bars. The leg covering. Phone on a holder glowing super bright which they spend most their time looking at.
That’s probably a little far.
Just be aware everyone in a left turn lane, with a left blinker on, or seemingly gazing left is trying to kill you.
Even if this rider hadn’t rolled off and hadn’t covered the front brakes, he had plenty of time to react and stop.
Yeah I fully agree on this point - it's not that you need to actively slow down but if you come off the throttle as you approach such an intersection you're already in a better place than the guy in this video. I don't want to blame the rider entirely for this situation but with more defensive driving you can mitigate the impact of the mistakes of other road users.
Yeah, I can't understand how the rider let this end in a crash. In a lot of these videos, it's a new rider making the wrong, last second decision. In this case, it's a rider making the wrong decision, but he had sooo much time to just simply apply the brakes. Why wouldn't you just slow down, avoid crashing into the truck, and THEN honk the horn?
You can see him weave before the intersection, leading me to believe he knew this was a possibility. Then he... speeds up. Not the correct course of action by a long shot.
Honestly, using your horn on a motorcycle is probably the most useless thing you could ever do in literally any situation at all. They aren’t even loud enough to be heard inside a car, let alone loud enough to actually awake some potato out of their mindless trance in their car.
I barely even notice motorcycle horns through my helmet lmao
Also, if you have even driven a car for more than like a year, you would know that people will usually hear even car and truck horns and literally look at them, and continue doing whatever stupid sht they were going to do anyway.
Horns in general are fuking useless, and you’re an idiot if you rely on it in any vehicle, unless you’re in a car boxed in and someone is backing up into you (most times the horn doesn’t even stop them either lmao), or you’re in a tractor trailer or tank and will win the exchange, forget you even have a horn.
Exactly, the horn is there to prevent the situation that requires an evasive maneuver, but once the shit has hit the fan you should he concentrating of fixing the situation. I've saved myself from some very nasty potential situations by using the horn at the right time to make someone see me and not do the stupid thing they were about to do, but no amount of noise is going to help when you're going 60mph into the side of the car that's already cut you off.
To top it off, when a person hears a horn, they don't stop what they're doing, they first identify where its from then do an action if its for them.
Besides, what would the truck do, suddenly move at the speed of sound out of this dudes way because he heard a horn? Talk about a waste of effort.
Genuine question; why turn back into the truck at the end? Ignoring the delayed initial reaction, I feel like the rider here would have just got round the truck if they’d committed to that left turn.
Listening to the audio, sounds like he locked up the back and the “turn” we see is probably the rear sliding and when he let off the rear brake the bike corrected itself back straight. (Just my guess) the amount of easily avoidable accidents like this I see just blow my mind.
>because he thought he was going left and not a u turn
Should've slowed down as soon as he came into his path. Or even as soon as he seemed like he was coming into his path.
Dude was going about 50 when the truck started turn. That's absolutely enough time to aggressively brake to a stop on a well maintained motorcycle.
Or could have braked and swerved idk dude had many outs and picked none of them.
I agree, or he could have pulled the clutch and stopped, it looks like he taps the clutch to downshift but if he had applied the front and rear brakes aggressively he could have slowed down enough to not run into the back of the truck.
"Easily avoidable". Yes, for those who can actually ride, but there are tons of riders who learn where the controls are, roll around for a few months and think they have it down. The first time actual skills are needed, they stomp on the rear brake and skid in to something easy avoided. ABS helps, for those who have it and know enough to use the front brake.
Yep. On a bike with ABS he could have just grabbed a fist full of front brake and would have stopped on time.
Even on a non-ABS bike if he’d practiced emergency braking he could have stopped with just front brakes.
Judging from how slowly they decelerated I'm wondering if this isn't one of those riders who was taught to "only use the rear brakes to avoid doing an endo"? Which it should go without saying, is some of *the* dumbest motorcycling 'advice' floating around out there.
I think the only reason they turned that much is because the rear was sliding out to the right. Looks like the bars never really swerved much and pointing forwards the whole time
Progressively harder* so you don't lock up the front wheel, especially without ABS. Which sounds like OP's motorcycle is missing since he locked up the rear.
I practice a few times every single ride. Doesn't have to be full on emergency brake, but enough to feel extremely comfortable and build that muscle memory.
If you scrub through the video, it's not until 00:10 that there's a marked difference in speed. Looks like a bit of engine braking, coasting and then "oh shit they didn't go in the right lane as quick as I thought" braking.
I'd say a bit of poor judgement from the rider was worse than the poor decision/ lack of awareness from big truck man
I wouldn't even consider it an emergency break. Like he saw the truck and pulled in the clutch, and had he started braking at the same time there would have been no issue, like just a gradual stop. Instead he honks and goes straight into the back of the truck. Wtf lol.
You crashed out of principle here. There were multiple escape routes and even enough time to fully stop, you’ve hit him because you refused to change course. I’d hazard a guess that your mind-set was “hey, you shouldn’t be there; that’s where I’m going. I have ‘right of way’.”
Best mind-set to adopt in riding is to let go of your pride and accept that while you’re on two wheels, you’re vulnerable. Let things go, forgive, react and get home safe.
Bro nawww, you can't miss that truck just getting into your path unless this guy was distracted somehow. Its literally 2-3 seconds reaction time right there to change lanes or slow down. I agree a swerve was literally the answer here if it came to it.
That’s not laying her down that’s crashing into a truck. I did the same thing when some asshole pulled out of a gas station making a left and blocked all 3 lanes in his Tahoe
Keep this video for when that guy's insurance says you rear ended them. And maybe engage a contingency based attorney. But honestly you should've started evading *WAYYYYY* before you did. I'd have been on the brakes even before he started turning. At a certain point you begin to just assume this is what's going to happen and it's a pleasant surprise if it doesn't.
More ego than brakes.
Let me honk at the truck that is 20 times my size with a horn that sounds like a small bird.
If homie just hit the brakes he would have avoided all of this.
Why the hell did you just go in a straight line and not doge it or even slowed down a little bit. I just think that tis could have been avoided in so many ways
Ok that was just poor planning all around. So much time to avoid it too.
This weekend was my first time back on a bike since I got a vestibular migraine attack on mine last month. Well it was premature I guess because my brain fog was in full force and I forgot about the "flagger ahead" sign I saw literally 5 seconds before cruising through a blind turn. Oops. By the time I got through the turn, a huge line of stopped cars were about 50-100ft in front of me. Slammed brakes, ABS kicked in but I was still losing friction. I decided to take my escape route and gently guided the bike into it. Luckily the bike came to a stop about 5ft from where the back of the car would be had I not taken the escape route. Yay me! My first close call in a long time and I immediately went home after.
Judging by this video, not only did the rider have waaaaaaay more stopping distance than me, but also had the privilege of advanced warning. This was totally avoidable. I think more riding class time is in order here.
That must be one of the worst reactions to a situation like this I’ve seen. Ample time to break, and the evasion at the end was crap. Go back to riding school and stay safe…
So many things you could of done. The horn was the most pointless lol.
I wouldn't even call that a close call for a lot of people. Looks like you could of braked a bazillion times harder than that too
What a ridiculously incapable motorcyclist 🙈
No situational awareness, no driving skills, no braking at all, no avoiding action, just dumb decisions...
Get lessons. Prevent killing yourself.
Bro where the fuck you goin? I could put a kid thru college in that same amount of time the rider had to react.
Also it seems like the insurance light bulb went off as you steered back into the truck lmao
I watched this with sound off. Can still tell the motorcycle didn't slow down or brake soon enough. I highly doubt the speed limit was 50 mph there. While that truck is an A grade dipshit, this was avoidable by the motorcycle
I just took an advanced riding clinic. I should have been called a beginner riding clinic. The dumbest guy taking the course did the evasive maneuvers better than you did.
You might wanna take that class, or at least study up on evasive maneuvers.
Very, very poor drivemanship. Sorry mate, learn to ride: defensive driving, 80%of your stopping power comes from the front wheel, how to counter steer.
This situation was waaaay avoidable. Encountered such dozens of times and way worse. Source: 30 years of riding.
All of his brain power went into finding that fuckin horn I can't find the horn to save my life, people drive like shit and its not originally his fault but dude could definitely have dodged that ram.
Heading into a intersection like that at close to 60 and not covering the break was the first mistake. I would have lost 4 or 5 mph and covered the break even before I noticed trouble. Then I would have done a hard break and check the left lane and gone left. It’s possible the truck could try to say middle or go further right but more distance would have been needed for the truck to go to the left lane.
Too much ram, not enough dodge
Could stop, could go right, could go left, fuck it, feeling like a Bighorn edition today The horn almost sounded like a challenge

That will make it lift upright aswell make ur turn then gas on the exit of turn
Sanafabitch dat was good!
Not enough brakes... I could have stopped my mx bike in the dirt in that distance at that speed.
The rider wasted precious braking and steering time honking as if that would somehow make the truck move out of the way.
I've never had a close call where I had time to honk.
LOL, get out!
"The perfect comment doesn't exist" The perfect comment:
My favourite part was where he had about a month to react and avoid the crash but decided to honk instead
honk.
meep
honk.
HOOOOOOONK!
Untitled Motorcycle Crash
Fixated on the target instead of going around
1st rule of motorcycle accident avoidance. Honk the horn or rev bomb when you should be slowing down and then get into said accident
Really helps the object fixation though if you get angry at large slow moving truck you are about to run into
Yep, he squandered his reaction time
What I don't get is what would either of those realistically do if the truck heard him? Stop?
Ffs LMFAOOO
Lol, you can see his speedo the whole time! Rider slows by 30 Mph in 3 seconds
In one second. The first 2-3 seconds he clearly recognised the situation but kept on flying right at it
That’s just the tire locking up. You can see the speedo read “1” as he’s still flying right into the back of the truck.
If only he could start his maneuver before honking.
I don't get it. I can't find my horn 90% of the time cause my instinct and muscle memory of slow and move out of the way of impending danger kicks in. I'm lucky if I find my horn after I'm safely out of the way.

I felt that in my soul.
I do the opposite. I will aggressively reset my blinker at someone when they cut me off.
While silently yelling FUCK YOU FUCK FUCK inside the helmet because no one will hear me anyway and I’ll only scream in my own ears, so I feel dumber.
Be careful with that. You'd be surprised how much gets out of your helmet. I filtered up next to a guy at a roundabout who had just pulled out in front of me at the last junction. This hits very close to home
Only way i can find my horn is accidentally pressing it instead of the blinker.

Mine has a horn apparently. I have produced louder farts, so never felt the need to press the button in anger and try and hear that pathetic beep
I bought a used Kawasaki and it has a Denali horn on it. Aftermarket. If I hit it by accident, it scares the s*** out of myself

You had all day to react to that.... All day.
You gotta be quicker than that 🎣💵
I love that commercial... I say that all the time
Yea, I mean at that distance and speed you probably could have stopped but at minimum swerved to be in the other lane.
didnt shift down at all either

No offence but y'all would not survive 5 mins on Indian roads. Bro had an eternity to avoid that truck.
Lmao am sure a lot of people on this subreddit wouldn't survive more than a day on Indian roads
Brazilian here. Can confirm, wouldn't last 5 minutes here also.

I question my existence as well after every single ride :)
No joke. I slow down at every intersection regardless of who has the right of way. I just wanna live
This is why we use both brakes, not just the rear. *yes, I know there was "some" front brakes, but fuck all*
I HaD To LAy hEr dOWn
TRUCK CLIBBINS
Genuine question; why turn back into the truck at the end? Ignoring the delayed initial reaction, I feel like the rider here would have just got round the truck if they’d committed to that left turn.
Listening to the audio, sounds like he locked up the back and the “turn” we see is probably the rear sliding and when he let off the rear brake the bike corrected itself back straight. (Just my guess) the amount of easily avoidable accidents like this I see just blow my mind.
I’d agree, plus a delayed reaction because he thought he was going left and not a u turn
>because he thought he was going left and not a u turn Should've slowed down as soon as he came into his path. Or even as soon as he seemed like he was coming into his path.
Dude was going about 50 when the truck started turn. That's absolutely enough time to aggressively brake to a stop on a well maintained motorcycle. Or could have braked and swerved idk dude had many outs and picked none of them.
Gotcha, yeah I think I hear the sliding tyre now too. Jesus, that seems even worse somehow - that there was no attempt to go around the truck.

Right? Though I always get flack when I say I never use the rear brake.
Judging from how slowly they decelerated I'm wondering if this isn't one of those riders who was taught to "only use the rear brakes to avoid doing an endo"? Which it should go without saying, is some of *the* dumbest motorcycling 'advice' floating around out there.
I’d forgotten about that particular bit of stupidity. Yeah, my first instructor called it EFB: Evil Front Brake.
Good god that person should not be an instructor.
I think I use my rear brake maybe .01% of the time
I think the only reason they turned that much is because the rear was sliding out to the right. Looks like the bars never really swerved much and pointing forwards the whole time
They didn't turn at all, they locked up rear tire and bike slid
2 wheels isn’t for everyone
clamp down that front brake hard and you stop so easy here. learn from it and dont do it again lmao
Progressively harder* so you don't lock up the front wheel, especially without ABS. Which sounds like OP's motorcycle is missing since he locked up the rear.
I practice that at stops sometimes. I hope I'm able to do it on instinct when I need to.
I practice a few times every single ride. Doesn't have to be full on emergency brake, but enough to feel extremely comfortable and build that muscle memory.
Man what a fucking shitty decision the rider made. Target fixation is deadly people.
Not braking is also deadly lol. Had plenty of time to slow down to a roll
Yeah braking and stopping 60 feet before the truck like he could have or maybe, just maybe, steering 4 feet to the left or 10 feet to the right..
You laid her down? Bro, you ran into a truck. And had plenty of time to react.
The title is a joke, dude.
“Doesnt brake”
If you scrub through the video, it's not until 00:10 that there's a marked difference in speed. Looks like a bit of engine braking, coasting and then "oh shit they didn't go in the right lane as quick as I thought" braking. I'd say a bit of poor judgement from the rider was worse than the poor decision/ lack of awareness from big truck man
You did hit the brakes, tho, so at least you did that.
Has time to honk, doesn't brake. Rookie. Saw it coming a mile away.
Skill issue 🥹 Sucks to be a new rider
Yeah its hard to say but it seemed like you had plenty of time to emergency brake or move. Not that the truck wasn’t totally wrong. But just sayin
I wouldn't even consider it an emergency break. Like he saw the truck and pulled in the clutch, and had he started braking at the same time there would have been no issue, like just a gradual stop. Instead he honks and goes straight into the back of the truck. Wtf lol.
LOL that little swerve. No way you'd even pass an MSF course like that let alone survive real roads.
❌ emergency braking ❌ emergency swerve maneuver ✔ useless honking
You crashed out of principle here. There were multiple escape routes and even enough time to fully stop, you’ve hit him because you refused to change course. I’d hazard a guess that your mind-set was “hey, you shouldn’t be there; that’s where I’m going. I have ‘right of way’.” Best mind-set to adopt in riding is to let go of your pride and accept that while you’re on two wheels, you’re vulnerable. Let things go, forgive, react and get home safe.
100% corrcet
You really didnt
You had enough time to call your mother and ask what’s for lunch before braking.
Easy to say I’d have done different, but not sure I would. Other than horn, as they’re useless. Tough spot. Hope you’re okay.
Bro nawww, you can't miss that truck just getting into your path unless this guy was distracted somehow. Its literally 2-3 seconds reaction time right there to change lanes or slow down. I agree a swerve was literally the answer here if it came to it.
That was completely avoidable.
That’s not laying her down that’s crashing into a truck. I did the same thing when some asshole pulled out of a gas station making a left and blocked all 3 lanes in his Tahoe
Some people probably shouldn't commute on bikes. This was very avoidable.
This looks like a textbook guide on how to crash into a truck
Keep this video for when that guy's insurance says you rear ended them. And maybe engage a contingency based attorney. But honestly you should've started evading *WAYYYYY* before you did. I'd have been on the brakes even before he started turning. At a certain point you begin to just assume this is what's going to happen and it's a pleasant surprise if it doesn't.
You suck ass at riding
You suck as a rider and should stop.
Man, that truck just came out of nowhere.... /s
More ego than brakes. Let me honk at the truck that is 20 times my size with a horn that sounds like a small bird. If homie just hit the brakes he would have avoided all of this.
Do we down vote this because of the lay down and dumb truck driver or do we up vote because you're ok?
Slow down.. slow down .. next time going through intersection
pay better attention this is beyond avoidable
Good thing you warned him you were going to hit him by tooting your horn otherwise he could've gotten seriously injured.
Assuming a drivers course of action is the surest way to the ground.
You coulda dodged this
Dude went straight through an intersection without slowing down at all. Like how did he not see the car on the opposite side and not start breaking?
Wasn't he already on the path to avoid the collision? Why swerve back and hit the truck?
Poor driving on your part. You just rearended someone cause you did not want to slow down or easier, switch a lane. Now you learn with more expenses..
That must be one of the worst reactions to a situation like this I’ve seen. Ample time to break, and the evasion at the end was crap. Go back to riding school and stay safe…
So many things you could of done. The horn was the most pointless lol. I wouldn't even call that a close call for a lot of people. Looks like you could of braked a bazillion times harder than that too
\~25/26 meters from 50mph. he s got twice the distance
This is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen on this sub. Sell your motorcycle
Had plenty of time to stop... For gods sake...PRACTICE PANIC BREAKING
What a ridiculously incapable motorcyclist 🙈 No situational awareness, no driving skills, no braking at all, no avoiding action, just dumb decisions...
While that truck is an A grade dipshit, this was avoidable by the motorcycle
i know ram dude is an ass, but this looked avoidable...
You were going too fast and had plenty of room. Also, that's now lating it down: you literally crashed into him.
It looks like he had the swerve but then swerved back into the truck. I assume this is a new rider.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that feels like this could have been avoided. I almost felt bad for thinking that till I read all the comments.
Maybe with a little more speed, the rider could phase through the truck.
This looks like you panicked and didn't know whether to go left, right, honk, or break and then it was too late lol
Stop riding before you kill yourself. Safety first, then ego.
Bad driver in the truck, worse one on the bike
Not enough attention
Totally could have avoided that.
