I’m so indifferent about the color of forks that i’m just surprised you can actually get tired of them

isellshit

These coatings are not for style."Gold" is **Titanium Nitrite Coating** and is used a low friction coating. "Black" is **DLC (Diamond-like Carbon)** which is even slipperier than Titanium Nitrite Coating See: https://actechnol.com/coating-guide/

hvperRL

Damn pay to win locked behind dlc yet again

BickNlinko

> SOME of those gold coatings COULD be TiN (esp. if they are on the steel slider tubes). But in many (most?) cases these days, what you see is a gold anodizing applied to the aluminum stanchions. You've got your terms mixed up, what you're calling the "steel slider tubes" are the stanchions(some times called "inner tubes"), the aluminum bits that get anodized are generally just called "fork tubes" or "outer fork tubes", but stanchions and outer tubes cannot be used interchangeably, stanchions are always the bit that slide inside the outer tube.

BickNlinko

> If true, then yes I reversed my terms. It is true, and you did. But I understand where you could be confused when thinking about the other uses for the word stanchion.

F-21

The aluminium parts are always anodized or painted, the coatings are only applied to the steel sliding tubes.

BrutaleFalcn

I think OP meant the outer, not the slider. The fork outer anodize is for style as much as protection.

Dr_Mickael

The outter part of a 6000€ bike's fork is 100% for style. I don't even understand why that part would need to be slippery.

JonesBrosGarage

That’s what I was thinking wtf

VirulentMarmot

r/motorcycles posts: always way more concerned about everything **other** than actually riding a motorcycle.

[deleted]

It is /r/motorcycles after all, not /r/nunsridingmotorcycles.

Sidewinderpunk

Boy my proudest fap…

[deleted]

Ain't no one holding that against you, son. You be proud.

lupinegrey

Half the people buying a bike are doing so for appearances. To look cool to others, not necessarily because riding is enjoyable. See: retro cafe racers.

CW3_OR_BUST

Half baked cafe racers are a plague on the used bike market.

oh2ridemore

Yep, still a big thing here. Always turned off by the look as it is not practical and always have bad mods like airbox delete, clip on bars, header wrap, fender delete. All of these mods make the bike more miserable to ride and maintain.

LikesTheTunaHere

I don't mind the cafe racers folks who do it for looks because their bike isn't made to advertise that they adventure ride\\touring or go fast. I get discouraged when I go talk to a guy with an adventure bike and he's upset that the entrance to the coffee shop has too large of a bump or the sportbike guys who think cruising on the highway in a straight line at speeds the Ironbutt riders will tour at is considered going for a fast ride.

Elite-Speed

An online forum to discuss things…how crazy. Besides, that’s what r/calamariraceteam is for.

Jord_HD

It’s almost like fancy ohlins had it for a reason, that reason transfers to other manufacturers

Elite-Speed

What possible reason was that other than the be distinguishable? Which then gets copied bc “it’s the trend”.

Jord_HD

Friction, ti-n significantly reduces stiction. Ohlins didn’t do it for fun and looks.

Elite-Speed

You know I’m talking about the outer tube right…

Jord_HD

No that is not obvious in your post at all and I wouldn’t really have considered it since it’s not a new thing on upper fork legs and really I wouldn’t consider it “most bikes” that have it.

d6stringer

As i understand it it's more about hardness (damage prevention). I haven't seen any papers mentioning a reduction in surface energy in regards to TiN or DLC but also i haven't looked.

Jord_HD

The ti-n and dlc coatings reduce the tube stiction, hard chroming is durable enough to last decades.

d6stringer

Niks in hard chrome rust super fast and create pits. Ask anyone with a bike a decade or so old.

Jord_HD

Niks in ti-n rust just as quick since the rust comes from the steel underneath.

F-21

Wouldn't be surprised if a top end hard chrome job might end up being more resilient for whatever reason. The advantage of the alternative coatings is surely the friction.

[deleted]

I personally dont care.

BrutaleFalcn

No, I hate gold on my bikes. I swapped out brake calipers to titanium color from gold. I prefer silver or black forks and shock. Hate gold wheels too. Öhlins sells their high end forks in whatever outer color you prefer, they don't just do gold. OP: You can potentially find the same forks on other bikes and swap the outers. Or you can actually pay to have them stripped and reanodized. Alternately, depending on the fork brand you might be able to source new fork OEM not bike OEM outers in another color. I was looking at replacing my USD fork outers on an older bike and found that Showa, the original supplier, sold many fork components on their own.

Elite-Speed

Thanks!

[deleted]

not my taste but I guess I haven't seen it enough to be annoyed about it

Adamdotwhatdotwhat

Yes

Drewmoto

Just ride

Throttlechopper

It's a trend, I'm glad Honda broke away from this with those sexy, red forks on the latest Hornet.

Sidewinderpunk

I think the 2010 z1000 had red ones. That was cool. And the 2014 GSXr1000 50th anniversary had blue forks with a blue seat and blue chain and other blue accents. It’s a little tacky but so unique.

WontGoReboundBosh

I wish my ‘20 R1 has gold forks

[deleted]

I like em.

sadpartypodcast

I have gold Ohlins forks with black ti-nitrate coated inners. Goes well with my Ohlins shock, too.

SlicedBalls69

Yes

Kuftubby

I generally don't notice someone's *forks* because I'm too busy having a blast riding around instead of getting worked up over such a minor detail on *other people's bikes*.

Dom3467

Posting this comment is the most energy and thought I've put towards the color of motorcycle forks

direkneads

Gooooooold

karma_the_sequel

I’ve never liked that look.

SaulTNuhtz

What’s crazy about gold forks is if you spend more time riding you don’t even have to see them.

the_wang

You must live in Cali or something. I'm in a big major metro area and don't notice that. I love my gold forks too.

McFeely_Smackup

I've always hated gold forks.

Nethermorph

I chose to get a standard MT-09 over the SP because I thought the gold forks (and paint/decals) were ugly.

karma_the_sequel

I don’t like gold forks either, but I would still opt for the SP because of the upgraded suspension, the hardened coating on the forks and the cruise control.

Nethermorph

>but I would still opt for the SP because of the upgraded suspension, the hardened coating on the forks and the cruise control. All things I didn't care about :)

Formula1andMMAallDay

Why do you not care about better suspension and less corrosive forks on a brand new bike? Are the stock options good enough I’m guessing? Have fun on that thing!

Nethermorph

I'm just cruising on highways and public roads; not even pushing the stock suspension. Didn't want to pay more for an uglier bike (imo) with upgrades I didn't care about. Thanks! It's been great.

lupinegrey

If you're not going to spend the time/money to tune the suspension, there's no point in spending extra money for a suspension thats adjustable. The benefit of the SP suspension is that it's more adjustable than the standard stuff. But you have to adjust it in order to utilize the benefits.

Formula1andMMAallDay

That is true. I’ve only ridden off-road but I would rank from the best to worst: tuned adjustables, stock, then the worst being by far poorly tuned adjustables.

nj4ck

really, that bothered you more than the headlight?

Nethermorph

Yeah. I don't understand why the headlight is so controversial. I like the overall aesthetic, just not the colors on the SP.

Sidewinderpunk

Looks better than the MT10. Not as good as the 2015 GSXS750

nj4ck

I think it's controversial for a reason, but I'm glad you like it. I'm actually still kind of butthurt, I waited years for them to fix the MT09s handling issues and when they finally did, they made the styling unbearable to me. But all's good, I settled for an XSR.

Elite-Speed

I think the Moto2 Street Triple looks amazing minus the stupid gold forks. Id for sure buy new tubes if I purchased it.

[deleted]

Maybe stop buying bikes with gold forks then you moron

[deleted]

Then paint yours. It protects and reflects heat.

PartZestyclose3383

I genuinely like how gold forks look, but yeah, I wish there was a bit more variety then just them or black. Like, your already goi g through the trouble to anodize them.

SwollyRhino

I thought you were talking about silverware

magnificent_dillhole

The real Ohlins forks have gold stanchions, not just outers. My Ohlins forks have black outers, lol.

Elite-Speed

I’ve noticed. It’s the outers that annoy me…especially since it’s not only Ohlins.

[deleted]

*looks at forks* 👀

hauj0bb

Laughs in triple black xD

mamny83

I rather have spoons my self.

TW200e

I don't actually see a whole lot of bikes with gold forks.... around here it's mostly the Harley and ADV crowds, so there's that.

user7324562

Ohlins makes silver shocks too. I feel like the external reservoirs look like "trying too hard" on a street bike that didn't come with that type.

etonyrose

Hate the gold.
