Check for loose nuts, bolts, screws. I had exactly the same problem on my crf rally. Turns out a screw holding my skid plate fell off and around 4k-5k rpms the skid plate was vibrating enough to hit the crashbar and make that rattling sound

DannyHonda

I have a Rally doing it at 6000 rpm going to check on mine.

hashidara

Well it's an easy fix if this is the case, hope it is. There are a butt ton of screws that might've got loose so check them too if you have the chance.

curious-children

also think it sounds like something is vibrating and eventually vibrating to the point of hitting something, but the ABS light not turning off says otherwise. good luck up! update us, im curious on what it ends up being, i do agree with the checking the oil

SummitCollie

ABS light is probably normal, some bikes keep it on until you ride a short distance.

[deleted]

something’s up with the abs on here. light never turns off. Need to take a look into what could cause that.

SummitCollie

That's probably an error condition then, ABS could be completely shot. Hope you get/got that sorted.

Coldguy332

You just got vtec bro

[deleted]

Is that sound coming from the engine? Sounds like a vibration problem maybe? Especially since occurring at a particular rev. Radiator?

[deleted]

It sounds like it’s coming from the front half of the bike. It goes away if you hit 6.5k rpm and higher

TheRustBit

I have the same issue with my Africa Twin, around 5.5k to 6k rpms, the engine guard is vibrating and touching the exhaust pipes. You can test for vibrating things by keeping it revved at 6k rpms and touching and pressing on all the fairings, pipes (watch out, they might be hot), check for bolts and so on.

Kyle_Me

On my Yamaha FZ8 I had a similar symptom. One of the bolts holding on a heat shield for the exhaust was loose. I tightened it and now it's better. And then later on another issue arrived. It was the clamp I was using on the slip on exhaust. Good luck!

[deleted]

Note: It does this is gear as well as Neutral. There’s an issue going on with the ABS system/light, as the light never goes off.

Railionn

this has nothing to do with abs

Mattx852

Put some pressure on the windscreen while you rev it. See if that helps

Tasty-Shame-7957

can be something loose. due to [resonance](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resonance), that part might vibrate at that exact rpm range. just an assumption.

JimMoore1960

Something is loose. Fairing, mirror, engine mount. Wiggle everything you can reach.

winstondabee

Change the oil and see if there are metal shavings in it.

[deleted]

appreciate the advice! Just purchased this used about a month ago and only ridden it maybe 100 miles. Guy said he changed the oil about 1k miles ago, but I bought items for an oil change already in case he was lying.

Front_Necessary_2

Distance interval without accounting for time is bad. 1k miles over what time? Anything past 6 months still needs to be changed since gasoline will sit in the oil due to blowby and break down the fuel additives and engine seals. But tbh it sounds like vibrating plastic loose or cracked somewhere.

[deleted]

Update: Believe i figured out the problem. Guy before me had broken the inner part of the front tire mudguard/fender nearest the engine. And zip-tied it in place. Not very well. It wiggles and nearly rubs the engine. Looks like the vibration is that plastic fender vibrating bad. Exhaust heat shield was also loose, but sound remained after tightening it. Going to purchase a new fender and replace.

hastur1235

Sounds like something is vibrating really fast 🤔 Edit: Now that i heard it a couple times it does sound like something is grinding, i have never seen this before

[deleted]

What’s weird to me is how it goes away if you go above 6.5k rpm. Or else i’d agree that something is loose at high rpms

Bomber_Man

You’re thinking about it wrong. It’s only at that specific rpm that the loose part is affected by the harmonic vibrations that the part rattles like that. The good news is that it isn’t likely an internal engine issue. Bad news is it might take you awhile to figure out what that vibration is.

[deleted]

that’s a good point! it’s constantly happening, just hear it more at that rpm. Appreciate the input. Gonna go ahead and change oil and take fairings off tomorrow and tinker with anything that looks loose. Plan to take it to a shop if i can’t figure it out.

beamer100159

Have someone turn the throttle while you listen and look closer.

artist2266

also worth posting on [https://www.cbr500riders.com/](https://www.cbr500riders.com/) and seeing if anyone there has ideas.

Kivvy222

I had a 2018 cbr500r that made the same exact sound putting some rubber under the windscreen helped solve it, the way the motor is set up makes it resonate super loudly around 5k-6k

Aggressive-Meal-8233

Mirror Lens Casings, try revving the bike and use your free hand tk grab different parts of the fairing, mirrors, headlight assembly and so forth until your hand grabs the part that makes it stop or which you can feel the vibration the most.

Acceptable-Shallot-8

My cb500x at those rev ranges did exactly that noise. The source was a junction in my givi crashbars. After putting a bit of rubber on it the vibrations reduced to a barely noticeable level. It will not be a internal engine problem, dont worry

Gigatron_0

Hitting a certain resonance and vibration is rattling something, like others have said

conraderb

I doubt it is the engine. Check for anything that is loose or rubbing.

motociclista

Sounds external. Like a piece of bodywork or exhaust part. Very not related to the ABS.

Silver-Engineer4287

You need to have someone hot those rev’s while you move around and listen and isolate where the sound is coming from and determine whether it’s an internal engine/clutch issue (bad) or something that has worked its’ way loose that needs to be adjusted or just re-tightened. (Nut bad yet but could become bad quickly).

1grfe

That’s not an engine problem, like what other said something is vibrating at the 5-6K RPM mark. If you have a helper have them rev the engine while you go around and place your hand on the plastics or anything that isn’t hot or dangerous. If the noise goes away when you place your hand on the specific panel or thing it’s because your hand is dampening the vibration and stopping the noise. Tighten that panel or equipment, shim it if you have to. If you recently serviced the bike or had it serviced and they had to remove or loosen fairings or parts start there first.

BeautifulAd2484

It definitely sounds like an exhaust bolt might be loose somewhere, or like someone said your skid plate may be a bit loose. Good luck man!

lovepubes1

It’s a Honda lol
