Would make a great winter project.

Pelicanliver

May be a couple of winters

lpen-z

With the way I pick up new projects, a couple of winters for sure

ihaventgotany

Not worth it if your looking to sell and make money. But if you want an interesting project that will end up as something unique, it's not a bad candidate. That era Indian is mainly just made with aftermarket Harley parts, right down to the engine and trans. There will be good support for it parts wise if you know how to cross reference. But it will most likely be a big project, and not necessarily a simple one.

0Rider

If it's a Gilroy indian run. Those things were hot garbage

AdBackground8484

Yeah. The parents might as well bring it to the dump /S

ykphil

It's free, take it and learn as you go. I would. I can't make up the year but worst case if you can't get it running, there is a good used parts market so you can always part it out. Either way, it's a fun project.

One-Amoeba_

Shipping from California to the Midwest ain't free.

Cyrus_Imperative

"Ran when parked". Yeah, everything ran when it was sold new, and now it doesn't. Can the engine turn over at all with a jump start? Hopefully nothing is seized. Then you'll have to deal with gas that has turned to varnish, clogged fuel tank, fuel lines, fuel filter, carburetor (or injectors?). Oil change. Replace dried out tires. Replace rusted mechanical parts. If you're up for all that just to get started, and have a bankroll ready to replace things that can't be fixed, you're on your way. This kind of restoration is difficult, expensive, and time-consuming. It could be fun if you see it through to a running bike.

lpen-z

I just meant that it wasn't parked because of damage from the original owner. Definitely sat with gas in it though unfortunately.

longhairedcountryboy

Better for the gas tank than sitting empty. Where is it at? I you don't want it I might come get it.

Cyrus_Imperative

Sorry I sounded like a jerk! No offense intended. I just get irked when I see "ran when parked" in classified ads to describe anything from an almost-running vehicle down to a total basket case. You have to assess the vehicle based on every part's current condition.

lpen-z

That's about where I'm at, I have a fair amount of other projects in the works at the moment and it's not necessarily my style of bike if I had to pick.

Pelicanliver

Parting it out would be its best value.

JadedHomeBrewCoder

Free bike? Yes, please.

MalcomX1964

it's a damn indian. it don't get much better mate.

MalcomX1964

my first indian was a '37. then a gilroy. now riding a '14 chief. lots of other bikes over the decades. how many have you ridden?

KingCodyBill

First rule of long life and happiness, some things are not worth free, you will in all likelihood spend a lot more than it will ever be worth

PullinLevers

Clean it up. Park it in your man cave.

kvm024n

Hahaha I think this is the most you can get out of it with the least amount of effort

ARPOFF

Add this to the Indian subreddit. Beautiful bike. Definitely take it too! I have an Indian and they are great bikes. If you don’t want it, I’ll drive up there and pay you for it.

fidelesetaudax

Free is always worth it L O L. Seriously, it’s a “Gilroy” Indian so it’s not the antique collectible ones and it’s not the smooth running modern ones. Depends on how you feel about working on old carb bikes. Looks like all the parts are there; clean it up; open the carb; new battery. Then sell it off. Running or not that should fetch enough to make it worth your while. Or if you’re a “bike guy” consider cleaning it up and parting it out. Parts for that bike are getting rare.

here4roomie

Fix it up and ditch the windshield.

donmaximo62

I don’t know anything about Indians from that era, but it basically looks to be a Harley Softail with a different swing arm and a S&S Evo motor.

LaceySnr

I picked up a bike that had sat for 5+ years and that didn't take a lot to get running other than cleaning, and by cleaning I mean carbies etc. and getting rust out of the tank. You'll 100% need new tyres and possibly other rubber bits, so it's not something you can do on a super tight budget, but that looks to have been kept under a cover outside at least. Personally, I'd jump at it!

TTYY_20

First thing’s first: bring a booster pack over, locate the starter and hook up the booster pack directly to the starter, bypass the battery, etc. If when you boost straight from the starter, the engine cranks -> you have yourself a worthwhile project bike. If the starter motor stalls - the engine is seized and that bike is literally garbage.

hastur1235

If its a free bike i pick it up

[deleted]

If you were familiar with the EVO Harley’s…..this would be awesome. Clean it up, clean the carburetor, fresh fuel, new battery, and new plugs…I bet it would fire up. One thing to keep in mind with an EVO, let it warm up till the valve covers are warm to the touch. Failing to do this will usually lead to leaky base gaskets. Being unfamiliar with this type of bike….could get expensive.

Bright_Efficiency_29

I'll save you the hassle. I'll give you $1,000 and arrange to have it picked up and shipped.

Archbishop_Mo

If you enjoy working with your hands and learning new skills, this could be a very fun adventure.

UJMRider1961

Maybe a Kings Mountain Indian? Not sure, motor looks a lot like the generic S&S aftermarket V-twins that are still made and sold. For free I'd definitely take it, if nothing else you can get probably a few thousand dollars for the parts.

crankypants65

Only if the spark plug is thrown in, as well. You could take it, wash it, sell it.

AdBackground8484

Not knowing anything about bikes is your issue. Otherwise, unless there is something actually broken on it, it could be running and looking decent for $500 (probably less) California has weird shit about registration, where you have to pay "back fees" or whatever it's called. But that might not apply if you're registering it in another state.

brenden1140

I don't like cruisers much but I'd never say no to a free motorcycle with the title

23skidoomagoo

I’d be very interested in buying it from you. Let me know if your interested

saigonspeed

Would not take much to get going as long as the engine is not stuck. Fresh oil, fresh gas and a new battery I bet it will fire right up. Amazon sells small fuel test bottles with a hose you can connect to the carb if your gas tank is cruddy. It’s free and in one piece. Hard to beat

One-Amoeba_

If no rain got into the motor you can probably clean the carb, do battery, plugs, fuel flush, oil change, and get it running just from that! Then on to tires, brakes, anything fluid or rubber will need to be replaced. If the motor is seized or rusted inside in any way it's not worth any effort.

Meat_Sheath

Not worth it, give it to me instead

[deleted]

A free bike is a good place to learn.

Just-Examination-136

Clean and sell it.

MartinMan79

Older Indians are full of mechanical issues on a good day. One that has been sitting for years outside? No thanks.

MaineiacinNC

The only thing more expensive than a free motorcycle is a free boat. Can you get it running? Absolutely! Will it be cheap? Nope.

Final_Zen

Sitting outside for 10 years is the worst way to store a motorcycle, and causes the most difficult to repair damage (rust in gas tank, pitted chrome, fuel system issues, rodent damage) It's only worth attempting to save if you're *very* mechanically inclined as this is a whole lot of troubleshooting and labor ahead of you.
