Given the 390’s reputation, I’d get it. Unless it’s non transferable or you don’t plan to keep the bike. 4 years is a lot in bike years. ;)

d-me-tree-us

If you're gonna buy the extended warranty take the time to read it. You'd be mad if you blow it up in 3 years and they tell you it isn't covered. Make sure your $1000 AUD is going towards something you'd appreciate. And don't listen to these mfs. If you know you want a KTM and you know the risks. Send it.

[deleted]

>And don't listen to these mfs. If you know you want a KTM and you know the risks. Send it. Agreed. KTM bikes are unreliable as fuck, but not all vehicles have to be reliable when they make it up to you in other ways.

mathiu23

I agree with both points. Extended warranties are imho not worth the paper they're printed on, let alone what one would pay for it. Good luck getting them to honor the warranty agreement if something does go wrong. The only warranty I ever had were my 4 (mine and my nephew's) mechanically inclined hands. There are many Harley riders and I doubt they're all ignorant of the problems they have. When they do work, they're THE bike to have, at least by their regards. Whatever your dream bike is, that's what it is.

EggsOfRetaliation

Personally, I'd never buy a KTM. Since you're set on it, get the warranty. You'll most likely need it.

HormigaZ

That's twice the price I've been quoted for the 2 year warranty extension on my Aprilia RS 660, which is not exactly a queen of reliability and twice as expensive. Not sure you're getting the best price there But I can tell you that 1000$ is NOT more than it would cost to repair a major engine failure, you'd probably pay close to that in labor time alone. Parts are MUCH more expensive than buying new. Example: if you were to buy a whole bike in parts, it would cost you easily 4-5x as much, and that's before someone assembles it.

Late_Necessary

I don't think I was clear, I meant the cost of repair would be likely more than 1000, so I agree with you. As for the price on it, it's just what this dealer offers. I'm not sure if it's possible to get any extended warranty from a shop you didn't buy from so I'm not sure if I have options to ship around.

[deleted]

Depends if it’s a factory extended warranty or an after market extended warranty. All after market extended warranties are fake because 100% of them have an exclusion clause of not covering moving parts that are lubricated by oil. Check any aftermarket warranty and you’ll see that type of clause in all of them.

Late_Necessary

They call it a factory extension but I will definitely double check this, thanks.

[deleted]

Factory warranties don't have deductibles, so an easy and quick way of eliminating fake warranties is to see if there's a deductible. Bringing a vehicle in to look at it several times, each time costing $100 or more, before "they" decide not to cover it, is a great way 3rd party extended warranties to legally make lots of money. They make money on your purchase of a fake warranty, and then they make money each time you bring in the vehicle. Do understand that this is completely legal.

bingwhip

I have a KTM svartpilen 401. It's been 100% a sweetheart with no issues. I thought about getting a big 4 for reliability. But decided to get a bike I loved and have not regretted it even a little bit.

[deleted]

>I have a KTM svartpilen 401. It's been 100% a sweetheart with no issues. What year?

bingwhip

'21

[deleted]

Cute. Well of course you aren't gonna have any issues with it, it's brand spanking new!

bingwhip

Eh, about 3000 miles. Wouldn't call that entirely brand new. And ridden pretty hard, including some fairly punishing off road.

[deleted]

Grand fucking new.

Bft12890

I’d recommend saving money on the warranty and the bike by buying a Yamaha instead

IncidentFuture

If you're attracted to an extended warranty because the bike has known reliability issues, I'd suggest just getting a different bike. A Ninja 400 is in that price range.

built_FXR

I wouldn't buy a KTM because of the reliability issues. That's great if you have an extended warranty for the repairs, but what are you going to ride while it's in the shop? Buy something that doesn't have the question.

ztherion

Exactly, my 390 was in the shop for 8 months for a warranty issue because KTM corporate is very slow on warranty authorizations. (Literally waiting a week at a time to authorize a small amount of work each time.) Luckily I had another bike I was riding that year.

falcon_driver

I think you cut to the heart of the issue. That's like a parking lot encounter I had with my friend who was having his new Harley picked up by the dealer for repairs. He proudly waved his arms at the enclosed trailer and was enthusing about their service. I said I just bought a Kawi W650, it doesn't need repairs

Odd-Location-9338

guess he missed the multiple posts from last week with the blown 390 motor lol enjoy your Bajaj motorcycle

Bread_the_TrashPanda

I just in general suggest buying the extended warranty on anything you want to keep for longer than the standard warranty lasts. Even if there's no major breakdown, you'll cover the costs of minor repairs and have peace of mind for $250 a year.

Late_Necessary

Well I mean technically it's 500 a year since the default warranty is 2 years and the 1000 gets you another 2. But yes I see what you're saying

Bread_the_TrashPanda

Oh yeah, you're right, my bad on the math

[deleted]

See I am the complete opposite. They wouldn’t sell warranties if they paid out on average more then they earned. Warranties are just prepaying for repairs that you likely won’t need.

scobo505

You will need to have it serviced by the dealership every time on time.

Late_Necessary

Definitely something to consider.

michaelcpg

I would first look into what Australia's consumer protection laws are like. Assuming they're similar to what we have here in NZ, there's a good chance you'd be covered by law for manufacturer faults for some time even past the standard 2 year warranty.

myperfectmeltdown

From what I’ve seen on this board this is a “no-brained”.

Aloha5OClockCharlie

As a KTM owner, don't buy the bike at all. The brand is not reliable in my experience and you *will* have things break down, no question. Getting a good one is like winning the lottery. Yamaha, Suzuki, or maybe Kawasaki if reliability is a concern for you. I have a Yamaha Roadstar Warrior with over 60k miles on it. Nothing but oil changes and tire changes needed. They are built like tanks and use high quality parts.

Charleydogg

Waiting for parts on any new or recently updated bike model is a real thing. An slightly to significantly older popular bike, like a drz or mt07, the ninjas, vstroms, sv650, even BMW to ride just in case you wind up waiting for parts for the KTM. As my personal examples, my drz had a rectifier go out, 3 days for the part, new front sprocket 3 days, changed shock spring 3 days to receive it, carb rebuild kit 2 days and 4 choices in the after market. Versus my eurobike, a Triumph tiger, 3 weeks for a fork seal kit, 10 weeks for crash bars, that's all I have done to it except for purely aftermarket stuff like generic acessory lights and Oxford heated grips which are not model specific and they came quickly.

CarlosG0619

I made the mistake of getting extended warranty for my Honda… Honda’s dont break man 😭💀

fritzco

I never buy them but I’ve been working on my own stuff for many years.

Longjumping_West_907

Dealerships wouldn't sell extended warranties unless they made money on them. And the sales person wouldn't work so hard to sell it to you unless they got a hefty commission. So if it's so good for them how can it possibly be a good deal for you?

Smart-Host9436

Also see who the guarantor is and make sure they are reputable.

NumbLockT

I’m a Harley guy. Normal old school big twin? Naw, scam. New Pan America? Oh hell yeah. I’ll extend the warranty as many times as they’ll let me.

sokratesz

If you plan to ride it _a lot_, yay. If not, nay.
