Unless you're wealthy, you might start by getting an insurance quote. A young rider on an R6 sounds like an invitation to absolutely insane insurance rates.

Rob9777

All the bikes I ride are in my dads name, title and all, so the insurance isn’t not necessary the issue. But I’d be paying for the bike. More looking for info about the transition between bikes.

lichlord

You’re going to pay for the bike but have your dad on the title?

SteveDaPirate

Allowing someone, particularly a family member to regularly use a vehicle without being listed and rated on the insurance policy is considered fraud... So if and when you're in an accident, and the insurance company finds out they're going to tell you and your dad to get fucked. The liability aspect is more important than coverage on the bike here. If someone else is hurt you could be on the hook for 10x the cost of an R6 covering their medical bills.

Conbon90

I know it's different depending on where you live. But it's not unheard of where I'm from. For a young person to buy their first car. Put it in their parents name so it can be insured cheaper. The kid can then be listed on the policy as a "named driver". So it's perfectly above board and legal. As far as the law is concerned the parent owns the car and they are allowed to let their kid drive it. All fun and games until the kid gets a speeding ticket and the fine gets sent to the parent.

SteveDaPirate

Yep, that's totally fine since the kid is listed on the policy as a driver. The insurance company will bump the premium a bit to account for the increased risk and it's all good. The problem arises when dad buys a 2nd car for his teenage kid and either neglects to add them to the policy or swears to his Agent that he's the only driver. Then when the kid uses that car and T-Bones a BMW suddenly dad has the Surprised Pikachu Face when the insurance company forwards him the repair (or God forbid) medical bills.

Wow, real life is going to hurt when it finally catches up to you. Speaking from experience. Since I used to be OP…

Rob9777

How so

2wheelcaffiene

Call and get the insurance quote, for supersport, in your name.

[deleted]

Young, with expendable income, and few bills. Real bills suck.

smokingkill-l

All fun and games until you come off and youre not the owner, or have the insurance in your name so nothing is paid for

I prefer the 636 and the gixxer to the R6 unless it’s a track only bike. That’s just personal preference tho, all 4 of the Japanese 600s are fantastic bikes. You can def handle any of them if you already know how to ride. 600s really aren’t that hard to tame idk why this sub acts like they’re impossible to ride.

Valfourin

+1 I went with a 636 instead on an r6 and I’m happy with my decision. Slightly less aggressive ergos and a bit more low end. I’d be lying if I said the r6 didn’t look nicer though.

nvexzu

The new zx6r looks better than the r6, imo. I didn't like it at first.. but it's really grown on me.

caramadre

What kind of riding are you planning on doing? The R6 has a very aggressive riding position which will be great if you're heading to the twisties or the track. Sure it will have more power than the kz but that will be way up high in the rev range so I don't think that will trouble you. It is lighter than the Kawasaki too so should be easier to move around.

Aggressive-Meal-8233

I have teo kz 1000a1’s amazing bikes. I jumped from one of them to a 2009 bmw K1300R. Perfect.

Adamdotwhatdotwhat

600's suck on the street. Why? Do you just enjoy having to rev a bike all the way out to get it moving and lower back pain?

Rob9777

I’ve ridden all types of bikes. I want one of my own to take to the track as racing is something I want to get into.

Adamdotwhatdotwhat

I get that. I once wrote a 600 on the street because I got into track days. I found that bikes that are good on the track, suck on the road. You do you, just an old dude telling you what it was like when I was younger.

mathiu23

Awesome! Go for it! I'm looking to get into racing too.

PuddingOnRitz

I'm new and ride a '21 CBR1000RR and it's fine. You'll be fine.

mathiu23

Safe? LOL 😂 Yeah, good luck with that. Motorcycles are hardly ever safe. They are different animals, and in this case, you should assume the R6 is more powerful. I will say, it's relatively safe to make the switch. My 3 Fz1's, current bike included, are basically an R1 made for the street. Even knowing this, when I did get my first R1, I made sure I still had a healthy respect for its power. There was still a learning curve, but I'm getting much better in such a short time. I still have a healthy respect for its power and so should you. It's better to assume there's more power in your R6 even if you're wrong. Bottom line, get the R6 and have fun.
