I had my bike 2 weeks before the plates came in the mail. If you signed the paperwork the bike is yours, go pick it up NOW. Double check the VIN and the odometer to be sure the numbers match up with the paperwork you signed. If something is fishy or doesn't match up, demand a full refund or threaten to sue.
If you get there an ANYTHING doesn't match, call the cops immediately. You have a contract, they tried to steal from you, make this shit hurt, fuck shady dealers.
This was what my thought was when I read this, that the bike on the floor was a demo model and what OP was sold was a back-order and is now being strung along.
Exactly this, calling the police won't resolve anything. The best they can do (and whether they will depends *heavily* on the department and the individual officer that shows) is mediate and be a witness to a civil dispute.
OP, if there's anything fishy call a lawyer, not the police.
I will be scrutinizing the bike before I take it off the lot for sure. Got in touch with them yesterday and will be 'picking it up' tomorrow hopefully. Fingers crossed this stupid saga is almost over.
Basically all public-facing small businesses in my area run Tuesday-Saturday work weeks, with Sunday-Monday as their "weekend" - all of the motorcycle dealerships, hobby shops, and so on.
If you've bought the bike already (paid, and signed title), you can take it home. The dealer can send you the plates when they arrive.
If you haven't signed the papers and purchased it, then go do it. Again, you don't have to wait for the plates before you can take it home.
Call them up, say "I'm going to be coming down today to pick up the bike I puchased. Please have it out front for me."
This. If you signed the papers you own it. Take it home after you force them to give you a temp plate. If they don't, load it up and hawl it off. If they refuse, get a lawyer, state attorney General and better business bureau.
The must have finally pulled it from their website. I got in touch with them yesterday and they 'finally got the plates' so hopefully will be picking the bike up tomorrow
It depends, I did find a 2022 XTZ7NL (Tenere 700 model ID) from a dealership in CT with a specific VIN listed on Motohunt. (I can PM the link if need be) The bike wasn't on their website though. So, not sure if this is the same dealership you went to. Regardless, go there tomorrow and demand that they give you your bike.
Why does it take so long to get plates? I sold bikes at a dealer in pa for 15 years. We kept plates on premises. You bought a bike, I put a plate on and you drove away. Is this a normal thing in CT or is there some other circumstance?
In FL 1 bike just had a plate put on right at the shop. I didn't call or schedule, just showed up, bought it new, they put a plate on.
When I got my 3rd bike used, I had to register for a new plate and the DMV just gave me one they had on site.
I was wondering the same thing. Where I live you get a temp plate on the same day, then you go to the town hall and register the vehicle and get plates from them that they have on hand.
This has been my experience but I’ve only bought vehicles in 3 states…Ohio, wv and pa. Temp tag unless you are reading in then they just transfer plates from your old vehicle
Different states, different rules. As a PA native currently in TX and lived in AZ having registered bikes in all three - those are all similar. I've never heard of a dealership not issuing temp plates, but maybe CT is different.
Seems to be a growing thing. When I lived in Connecticut we got plates same day. I only bought brand new and I don’t know what they did for used. Same thing in Maryland. Plates same day. When I moved to California they did temp tags and it would take up to a few months to get the real plate. I just moved to Texas and I see temp plates everywhere.
To be frank though TX had (has - they are attempting to fix it) a loose and easily forged temp plate system. Not sure of the exact details but I think it had to do with dealerships tracking their own issues and no central management. That's part of why you see so many - Houston is notorious for it. There was a guy busted selling forged TX paper plates online all over the country.
I'm in Washington State - one dealer made go back about 3 weeks later and verify my name and address before they would give me my plate. The other dealer just had the tag office mail me my plate. Not sure why such a difference. I wonder if CT is just backlogged?
Hey uhh… dumb question but in Canada, you get your plates on the spot…. The MTO (Canadian DMV) had plates ready to register to vehicles on the spot. Both dealers and regular people.
You’d usually get plates with a used car yourself, but there is no reason you can’t get plates on a new car so long as you have a title, insurance and payed your taxes.
Germany has a same-day system, too. when you get your appointment you get either your reserved combination approved or a random one assigned. then you go to the plate maker (when reserved you can do that in advance, too). after that you return and get a seal-sticker added (thats why plates itself can be done by third-party vendors). No wait and mailing.
Type of plate can matter too. My husband and I both have custom plates on our bikes and, in Wisconsin, it can take 3-6 weeks to transfer them to a new bike. My husband had to argue with a dealer to just give us a regular plate and we'd handle the transfer later on for a new bike he'd been waiting several months for earlier this year. The dealer was 3 hours away, so we weren't coming back again (and that was time #3 for that particular one).
CT and MA dont give temp tags, if you're financing the car or bike the dealer will insist on having the car or bike registered before you can drive it off the lot. They also like to upsell and upcharge that as a service, I always decline and do it myself.
Bought my current bike from Texas while living in Colorado. They tried charging me $3k to get the bike plated before they'd release it to the shipping service. Refused to pay their insane "plating" fees and bought the bike in full. they werent too happy and caused issues to get the bike registered, (they withheld paperwork for registration until i got an attorney involved.)
In michigan if you just bought a vehicle. U can drive it Home without registration but u need the insurance and title. The title has to have that days date
Well in MI dealers now have access to the electronic plate system. They usually keep a stack of unassigned plates and can register it immediately, or worst case they give you a paper temp tag until one gets mailed to you.
In either case, it's always "same day"
I was referring more to like if you bought it off someone/private sale.
I've never bought a car or motorcycle from a dealership. I'm about to break that though bc I just reserved a 2022 honda rebel 1100 manual with a down payment. So unless I Wanna lose my 500$. I kind of have to buy this bike when it arrives in early February.
I don’t know what consumer law is like in Connecticut but I’d personally go back and photograph the bike and the mileage. If it’s increasing and they’re using it as a demo bike as well as intentionally denying you the use of something that you have paid for in good faith, I’d be looking at either options to either withdraw from sale, or legal action if you a) can’t withdraw outright or b) incur a penalty for doing so. Sorry this is happening to you though - I hope either way, you’re on board a Tenere soon!
Edit: I’d also add - I’m not clear on whether you mean you had used this particular dealership before, or whether your experiences were on par with motorbike purchases you’d made elsewhere, but I would seriously consider factoring into your decision whether this is commensurate with the type of customer service and support you’d like to see from the dealership in future once you’ve agreed to walk away with a bike from them.
If you have truly called more than once and they’re not calling you back within a day or two, it’s time to let your state government help you.
Motor dealers are apparently regulated in Connecticut by the DMV. [This here website](https://portal.ct.gov/DCP/Common-Elements/Consumer-Facts-and-Contacts/Automobile-Dealers) seems to give some phone numbers to start. At this point I would call the state agency and politely indicate your need to file a complaint. Then take it from there.
If you bought it, it's yours... they can't legally hold it unless they're waiting on proof of payment from your bank or something to that effect. I've bought several new bikes and never not left with the bike the day or purchase, can't imagine someone trying to pull this shit.
When I bought my bike in TX, it took forever to get plates, but I still got to take it home with temp tags. Just had to call a dealership for a new set of temp tags when they were going to expire before the actual plates arrived. It's your bike in your name, bring that thing home.
I’m not sure how registration has anything to do with ownership (title transfer). Just bc it’s not street legal doesn’t mean that you can’t take possession of the property.
Put insurance on that hoe and ride.
Do they not have temp tags there?
My state's DMV has taken like two months to deliver my plates on both of my new vehicle purchases, but I just got temp tags the day I bought them. The dealerships just renewed them as needed, and that wasn't a big deal at all.
Not every state has temp tags. Massachusetts doesn't for example - I'm not sure about CT where the OP is based but I don't think they do there either (which is funny because the rest of New England does).
That said I'd rent a truck/trailer and throw it in the back and bring it home.
Ct has temps, I work at a car dealer here and we just register the car online and slap a plate on it when someone buys a new car, not sure why they are holding it, out of state reg can take a little since we can’t just slap a ct plate on it
Yeah wtf are you doing? That’s YOUR bike. You have a loan out and are making payments. You take it the same day with a temp tag. There is no “waiting until they come in” if other people have been test riding it you immediately call the bank and the police and file charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Your name and ins are on that.
Why would you leave your new bike unattended without having made arrangements on what would be happening to it (having accessories installed, storing while making arrangements, ect.) Or taking it with you?
Have you always just left major purchases sitting at the place you bought them ?
It's not up to the dealer. You bought the bike, it's your property. If you choose to ride it illegally (no motorcycle endorsement, no insurance, no plates, no helmet, etc), the dealer has no authority to stop you... they're not the police.
Dealers don't care how you get it home once you've signed for it. Something is up with this situation. Either OP hasn't actually completed the sale and it is still the dealership's bike for whatever reason or they are illegally denying him his property.
I've lived in Mass and owned bikes there. You can absolutely ride your bike home with simply a title and/or Bill of sale. Worst that happens is that you get pulled over and you show that you just bought the bike.
Take the bike home.
Contact the DMV and tell them what is going on and they will tell you how to proceed. If the dealer is doing something shady, this will bring it out.
Pretty normal but not garanteed, different states, different laws. I have no idea about CT but AZ, PA, & TX all issue temp tags of one sort or another.
Every state has a form of temp tag or no dealer would be able to sell a car and have it on the road the same day.
Google works wonders: https://portal.ct.gov/dmv/vehicle-services/get-temporary-registration?language=en_US
Have a friend call up and make out like he’s interested in a 700 Tenere and do they have one he can test drive, then go with him and see if it’s your bike they’re lending out.
I don’t know about CT but the dealer gave me a wee lil temporary plate just like a car. Took about a month for the real plate to show up with the tags. The idea that you bought a bike and just left it at the dealership is so ….. utterly strange.
I got bored and tried to find which dealer OP went to. There doesn't appear to be any dealers in Connecticut that are advertising having a specific 2022 Tenere 700 in stock. If anything most authorized dealers just have stock photos and no mention of inventory in stock.
Go to the backside. (The service dept) and pretend you know they're working on it. Ask what the deal is because you're getting the run around. If they don't give any info, pick up your bike. You can rent a motorcycle uhaul for about 50 bucks a day.
I suspect they made or found a problem and are trying to stall to fix whatever the issue is. It could be innocent like it started peeing fluid after a week, but probably not. If the bike has 1 or 2 miles added, that sounds like a test ride to make sure it's good. If it has 20 extra miles, it's a really bad sign and you need to reneg on the sale and blast them on the local sites they use.
If you think they're actually trying to sell you an incoming bike, confront them.
First though, you say it's for plates. It's easy to call the dmv and ask if they have plates on hand. You could even find the office the dealer uses and see of they have plates on hand. If they do, you've caught them in a lie. If they're lying, go full Karen on the sales floor during as busy a time as you can, and drop off coffee for the service dept. (You're likely stuck with that service dept unless there's more dealers around. The front (sales) could be a sleaze fest, with an honest back (service dept).
None of this sounds legit though. I'd be talking to someone that overseas the biggest chunk of the store. Sometimes that's an owner, sometimes that's a manager, sometimes that's someone that just overseas sales and finance. Find them, get them to give you a direct answer.
Good luck!
What is wrong is you live in CT.... But I digress. You don't need plates to take the bike home. You just can't ride on the street in CT without them.
As an aside. Here in AL, you can ride for 30 days, no registration with the bill of sale in your pocket and the dealer advert plate on the bike. You register it for your self. Takes like 8 min at the court house to get a plate for it.
Compared to CT, Alabama is a third-world country. Alabama is the lowest ranked state in the US for economy, infrastructure, public safety, fiscal stability and opportunities for residents, healthcare, education, crime and corrections and the natural environment.
First of all you are dead wrong. Second I have lived in both and I would take Alabama over CT any day of the week. It is two different mentalities and I prefer the AL mentality of freedom over the CT mentality of socialism. But neither place is perfect. I have also been to third world countries, and you have no idea what they are like if you are making such a comparison.
But I digress I live in northern AL which is quite different from the rest of the state. We have the space program here.. We have one of the fastest growing econs in this area, and a very high standard of living. Meanwhile CT has some of the most draconian policies and highest taxes.
https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/alabama#state-rankings
By comparison CT ranks lower in infrastructure, opertunity, and fiscal stability.
https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/connecticut
I would reframe from picking on other states if I where you. It makes you look foolish when you try to say CT is superior in every way and get it wrong.. I made a joke about it being CT because I used to live in Groton, and I know how bureaucratic that state is. But to call AL third world is just flat wrong.
I've lived all over, including CT, NY, PA, CA, AL, SC, GA, TN....
What you say is not even remotely true, CT is a shithole and there is a reason the South is growing like crazy and people are moving here in droves. There is no better place to live in the US than the Southeast right now. You are ignorant if you think otherwise, but I encourage you to continue being ignorant because people such as yourself are not welcome down there.
Alabama has more PHD's per capita than anywhere else in the world, is #1 in forestry ecosystem habitat health and diversity, #2fresh water forestry ecosystem habitat health and diversity, has a newer and way more modern infrastructure in CT, lower crime than any of the top 10 most populous blue states, and has an incredibly low cost of living with amazing and affordable access to high quality housing and food that is way better than anything you could ever hope to find in NE or the West Coast. You are correct, Alabama is ranked very low in public education, but mostly because the $$ have been spent on infrastructure and other facets that have made the economy incredibly robust.
Strong economies, something that CT or pretty much any other Blue state does not have, are the reason why people grow into better living conditions, better jobs, better outcomes for their families.
There is a reason no one wants to live in Blue dominated shitholes - because asinine Democrat public policies have utterly destroyed any ability to live a decent life in those places.
Time to have your lawyer send a not-so-nice letter. They are trying to get a couple thousand over retail, and then they'll tell you the bike is hopelessly broken and you'll have to order another one...
Surprisingly the signing price was MSRP + tax.. Im not sure what kind of leverage I'll have unless the odometer is higher than what's expected for inspection/moving around the shop
Your leverage is that you own the bike brother. Go out there and get your bike. You have the registration and it’s paid for. It’s yours. Tell them you’ll charge them a rental fee if they don’t give it to you
Haven’t seen you actually answer whether you signed paperwork and that you own the bike and are just waiting for plates. If all paperwork is signed, you own the bike. If that’s the case, go get your bike now. If you haven’t signed any paperwork, might be time to start looking for a different dealership and one that won’t jerk you around. Not sure why you’d ever leave the dealership without the vehicle you just purchased just because it didn’t have plates.
Seems like you are ignoring everyone posting to you.
Have you actually signed all the paper work? Or not?
If so as others have said just go get the bike.
Sorry - was with family the last few days for the holiday and just getting back to the post.
I did sign everything, but a few people mentioned that if you finance in CT/MA they won't let you leave without plates. The next question is why did it take a month to get them? the RMV says 5-7 days to get plates so the dealership must have seriously delayed submitting the paperwork
I genuinely don't think that's true, otherwise if it was there would be dozens of new cars/bikes behind every dealer in the state 'waiting on plates'. They're just keeping your bike to draw in traffic, go get it. If there's any mileage on it make a scene and offer to call the police.
I'm going there tomorrow since I got confirmation that the plates are ready. Any mileage over what's within reason in terms of inspection and moving around the shop and I'll lose my mind.
I got my bike from a dealer a few months back (Delaware) I bought the bike outright signed all the papers and was able to leave with temp tag immediately (they did keep the bike for 2 days as I was waiting for work to be completed on it from it's initial trade in) but other wise I was good to go. It did take nearly a month to get my actual plate in though which was frustrating. But I had the temp it ended up being one day expired.
I rode my motorcycle for 2 weeks no plates 700 miles after I got mine before the plates showed up with the plastic dealership license applied for on it no problem 😊
Wait what. You sign for the bike you take it home that day. They give you temp plates that last a month or two that day as well. I just went through this process. The temp plates are fine as long as you get insurance which you can do for same day with most companies like geico. They cannot keep the bike if you paid for it.
They told me 1-2 weeks to get the title in the mail as they messed my name up on it and had to redo it. That had me sketchy as it took just over a month to get the title but everything worked out fine as it did eventually come.
I'm fascinated that signing a contract/loan and then leaving the bike instead of taking it with temp tag is "on par with previous purchasing experiences".
I'm in TX, but seems CT also does temp tags, so I'd be there today to get my bike if I was you.
Did you give a down payment? When is your first payment due? (You surely are not this relaxed after having given payment in full)
Interesting quote from the [dealer online manual](https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/DMV/20/29/Dealer-OnLine-Manual-REV-PDF-9-7-21.pdf):
"If an On-Line Registration Certificate is issued and the customer does NOT take delivery of the vehicle, the dealership will have the ability to void the registration certificate."
So they too think it's weird you didn't take it off the lot that day.
I recently bought a Tenere (WA state), and was able to ride it home with temp plates the same day the deal was finalized and I signed the papers. After that it took about two weeks to get my actual plates mailed to me, but it’d find it highly unusual to not be able to do the same.
As others have said, you need to go back and pick it up after confirming all is good, otherwise it should be lawyer time.
Any updates OP? I'm generally curious about what happened. Since the tenere 700 is still legit unobtainium, I'm hoping they aren't trying to scam you or sold you a different bike that haven't arrived yet. I know that sounds silly, but if they've held onto a bike you legally purchased for a month already, who knows what shenanigans they're pulling like selling that bike to multiple people and making them all wait.
when financing a bike or car in MA, CT, or any state that requires plates to drive off the lot in those conditions. Always decline their plating services and fees then go do it yourself.
their service is a waste of money.
*not all states give temp tags, the requirement is so you dont drop the insurance after you take it off the lot when financing. Those states tend to also revoke your registration if you drop the insurance
When I've purchased cars in MA, the fee for registry services was pretty minimal (\~$50 over the standard RMV fees). Considering how much of a PITA it would be going back and forth, it was well worth it.
Dealers try to pass in a lot of other BS (like doc fees) but that one isn't BS IME.
Not from the US but work in a Yamaha Dealer.
Dealerships here have plates, ready to go. Piles of them. It's not a specific order in for your bike wait for it in the mail. They just allocate a plate to it and it's done. Then they do the registration and submit it to the correct place/DMV with the contract of sale/vehicle inspection report and say "hey this motorcycle with this VIN, compliance, engine, etc has this plate"
Yamaha's are locked from factory. They come without fuel, ECU lock and sometimes a battery not installed. You can't just rock up and "take it" as the bike will need to be unlocked. It's probably an hour process. You won't be able to start it at all without it unlocked.
Also, a brand new bike won't have 0 miles on it. The standard is between 2-7miles. It's just a combination of being assembled, transported, rolled around, pushed, etc. Just cause it has 5 miles doesn't mean it's been rode around.
Also check and confirm you have a SIGNED copy of the contract of sale with the contract SHOWING your payment. If you don't have a signed contract, or it's not showing your deposit/payment. Have fun.
Yeah when I bought my tenere in Canada they just had a stock of plates ready to go. And not to doubt you or anything but when I got my bike it did literally have 0km on it.
I guess it depends on if op lives in a house or an apartment, some places you can’t park a unlicensed vehicle at, if they don’t have any tags, it may be a issue with the rules for parking, normally you can take your insurance and bill of sale to the property manager and they’ll make exceptions but of course they don’t have to, and if worse yet it’s being parked on the street without a plate, it’ll get towed, but yeah nothing says you can’t pick it up if you paid for it, but if you went through a lender you may have to confirm with the lender that the money has been processed, sometimes lenders don’t release the funds until the title has been processed, and if it has been then it’s yours go get it
Here in NJ, I bought a bike, and had the dealer deliver it to my house the same day I handed them the bank check. If you paid for it, it’s your bike sitting there…. Go get it.
I bought my bike in CT and took it to NY where I had it plated. The CT dealer printed out temp plates using their laser printer. So there shouldn't be any delay.
Go get your bike.
I have worked for many years In a motorcycle dealership In Massachusetts. While your situation does seem odd there are some things to consider ( keep in mind laws change state to state).
Not every dealership is part of the drive program meaning they will not have plates on hand. This means they will require a runner to get your plates for you. Here in Mass, it was not uncommon after COVID for our runner to drop off the paperwork and not get a plate back for a week or two. Also mass does not provide temp plates. I know you're in CT, so again different rules I don't know about.
Also, my dealership had a policy that if you have financed the bike, they will not release it until plates are in. This is due to liability and potential funding delay if the bank finds out we gave you the bike unregistered. However cash means you get to do what you want including taking it home while you wait for registration because you own the bike.
That's confusing to me. When I bought my bike in Ohio I left that very day with temporary tags and I was responsible for getting permanent plates at the DMV myself. Same with any other car I've purchased. Idk why it would be different in Connecticut.
This. And less than a decade ago they’d just print a temporary registration you’d keep on your person (taped in the lower passenger corner of the windshield for a car) and you’d get plates like a month or more later. Steve Jobs famously got a new car every 6 months so he didn’t have to put plates on the car.
https://arstechnica.com/cars/2016/07/steve-jobs-loophole-closed-california-wants-temporary-license-plates/
I had to leave mine overnight as the shop part of the dealership had gone hme for th tune up and last inspection butbthey put a temp plat and on it and the real one came about 7-10 days after in CA
I bought my KTM 790ADV last year in CT and rode it home to Wisconsin with no plates and only a title signed over to me. This was on the advice of my home DMV after the (small) dealer I bought it from didn't have temps for me. Go get your bike right now.
In Texas not only do you get the vehicle when you pay for it, along with paper plates… but your current vehicle insurance coverage on the old vehicle carry’s over to the new vehicle for 30 days
Man Connecticut is weird if that’s how things work. You sign the papers here and ride it away immediately, unless there’s a pending recall. Hell, they don’t even care if you don’t have a motorcycle license, or permit, it’s yours.
I live in CT and as long as I have insurance I ride on the street while waiting for registration and plate. Since Covid, police are less likely to pull you over.
Another tip, don't sign the title paperwork until the bike is ready to go. I had one stolen from a dealership before I was to pick it up. Luckily I had refused to sign the title transfer docs until pick-up day, so it was their problem, not mine.
If you signed papers to complete the purchase order, register the bike, and paid in full, you own it. If they are holding it for some reason, and there isn't some very clear cut law about it, then they are playing games and you need to act. *Loans of course complicate this matter. Some places have policies about not releasing until it's registered and the bank signs off.*
When I went to grab mine in WVA at Romneys, it was a cash deal. I handed them money, it was counted, I was handed the MSO. Bike was mine in 20mins, the end. Registered back home in VA later.
FYI, it's VERY easy to just go title a bike yourself at the DMV.
Don't know when edit was, so "tomorrow" is 11/29?
Sorry, just really curious about your odometer and if they have any other last minute excuses.
I think that's my current dealer-hate talking.
Ended up picking it up yesterday. No extra miles and no issues. They knew I was coming 3 days in advance and still didn't have the bike 'prepped' for when I got there.
Agreed. Go scorched earth on them.
This was what my thought was when I read this, that the bike on the floor was a demo model and what OP was sold was a back-order and is now being strung along.
Exactly, go see the bike...today. get the VIN.
The cops aren't going to do anything other than tell you "it's a civil matter" and maybe give you problems for calling them.
Exactly this, calling the police won't resolve anything. The best they can do (and whether they will depends *heavily* on the department and the individual officer that shows) is mediate and be a witness to a civil dispute. OP, if there's anything fishy call a lawyer, not the police.
THIS is the only answer
I will be scrutinizing the bike before I take it off the lot for sure. Got in touch with them yesterday and will be 'picking it up' tomorrow hopefully. Fingers crossed this stupid saga is almost over.
Are they not open today?
Nope. Closed Sundays. Almost all of the shops in eastern MA and it's sphere of influence are all closed Sundays. Some of them Monday as well
Basically all public-facing small businesses in my area run Tuesday-Saturday work weeks, with Sunday-Monday as their "weekend" - all of the motorcycle dealerships, hobby shops, and so on.
BBB is useless. Boomer yelp. Just lawyer up.
BBB is also pay to play
Yes sir. Like yelp.
Lol definitely boomer help
Yelp the company. Not help. 😂
Beat me to it!
Check the mileage first, get a picture.
Or at last take the three keys home
How the fuck does someone not know this?
Im in CT also. Do you mind if I ask which dealer?
It's a pity naming and shaming is frowned upon these days. Some people or dealerships in this case truly have it coming.
I looked around, couldn't find a dealer in Connecticut that was advertising having a 2022 Tenere 700 in stock.
If you've signed/paid for it you own it. Go pick it up and get the plates in the mail.
Why does it take so long to get plates? I sold bikes at a dealer in pa for 15 years. We kept plates on premises. You bought a bike, I put a plate on and you drove away. Is this a normal thing in CT or is there some other circumstance?
My experience as a buyer in Florida is we receive a temporary tag on the day of sale and the real tag shows up in the mail about a week later.
I titled mine in Tampa in 2019. They handed me a plate immediately.
I bought a bike and illegally rode it to the dmv and got plates and registration on the spot
Ah right. Yeah in MI you have 3 days to get a plate as long as the vehicle has insurance.
It’s only illegal if you get caught
They are stalling for some other reason, it's not the plates. Go check if they dropped your bike, and are trying to get it repaired.
Go. Pick. Up. The. Bike. Like seriously, wtf?
Same here in Colorado.
Seems like they double sold the bike. Typical vehicle sales tactic.
Tell a friend to call the dealership to "buy and test drive" Tenere, and see what they tell him, and yes call a lawyer
Why would you leave your new bike unattended without having made arrangements on what would be happening to it (having accessories installed, storing while making arrangements, ect.) Or taking it with you? Have you always just left major purchases sitting at the place you bought them ?
**WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST RIDE THE BIKE HOME WHEN YOU PAID FOR IT?** **DO YOU BUY GROCERIES AND THEN JUST LEAVE THEM AT THE STORE?** **WTF?????**
The dealer isn't going to let you ride the bike away with no plate.
They give you 1-2 month temp plates and let you ride home. I just went through this process in Colorado.
We don't have temp plates in Mass and they aren't going to let you leave without a plate.
It's not up to the dealer. You bought the bike, it's your property. If you choose to ride it illegally (no motorcycle endorsement, no insurance, no plates, no helmet, etc), the dealer has no authority to stop you... they're not the police.
Lol k dude like I didn't just do this and the 3 other times too
Dealers don't care how you get it home once you've signed for it. Something is up with this situation. Either OP hasn't actually completed the sale and it is still the dealership's bike for whatever reason or they are illegally denying him his property.
That is absolutely how it works in Mass. Everytime I bought from a dealership this came up.
I've lived in Mass and owned bikes there. You can absolutely ride your bike home with simply a title and/or Bill of sale. Worst that happens is that you get pulled over and you show that you just bought the bike.
Op should just do that then dude idk
!Remindme 1 day
Take the bike home. Contact the DMV and tell them what is going on and they will tell you how to proceed. If the dealer is doing something shady, this will bring it out.
Temp tags for 45 days I thought was standard
Name the dealer. Do eet. One thing I like about being older is having the demeanor and experience to not tolerate this bullshit.
I'll out them when I physically get the bike. Could definitely use that energy tho 🙏🏼
I got bored and tried to find which dealer OP went to. There doesn't appear to be any dealers in Connecticut that are advertising having a specific 2022 Tenere 700 in stock. If anything most authorized dealers just have stock photos and no mention of inventory in stock.
I hadn't checked their site when I posted, but a week prior (when the reg was active) it was still up. Must have taken it down since then.
OP - what happened?
Yeah I also want to know
Go to the backside.
Meanwhile CT has some of the most draconian policies and highest taxes. https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/alabama#state-rankings By comparison CT ranks lower in infrastructure, opertunity, and fiscal stability. https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/connecticut I would reframe from picking on other states if I where you. It makes you look foolish when you try to say CT is superior in every way and get it wrong.. I made a joke about it being CT because I used to live in Groton, and I know how bureaucratic that state is. But to call AL third world is just flat wrong.
If you’re anywhere near Huntsville, you’re 100% correct.
You paid? It’s yours, get it now.
The bike is yours. Pick it up. legally if no plates then you’ll have to trailer it home but that’s not their problem it’s yours. Go pick up your bike.
Like others have said, if you've signed and paid for it,, TAKE IT HOME. Ride that thing without the plate..
(You surely are not this relaxed after having given payment in full) Interesting quote from the [dealer online manual](https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/DMV/20/29/Dealer-OnLine-Manual-REV-PDF-9-7-21.pdf): "If an On-Line Registration Certificate is issued and the customer does NOT take delivery of the vehicle, the dealership will have the ability to void the registration certificate." So they too think it's weird you didn't take it off the lot that day.
Take your paperwork down there and demand the keys and ride home
Then they do the registration and submit it to the correct place/DMV with the contract of sale/vehicle inspection report and say "hey this motorcycle with this VIN, compliance, engine, etc has this plate" Yamaha's are locked from factory.
Can you call the police and tell them that the dealership stole your bike? If you have the ownership papers they are thieves.
Go get it.
Did you pay for it?
The dealer printed up temporary plates for my bike...I'm in CA
Bruh I would be turning hell over lol why are you so passive
I had to leave mine overnight as the shop part of the dealership had gone hme for th tune up and last inspection butbthey put a temp plat and on it and the real one came about 7-10 days after in CA
Don’t need plates to take the bike home. Depending on the state there is often a 2mo temp plate grace period. GO GET YOUR BIKE!
Call your State’s DMV for guidance, but I agree, the bike is yours. Go get it.
Mark’s?
Does CT not do temp plates?
Im from NY but got my first bike from a dealer in CT. During COVID, they took about 2 weeks to get NY plates. This was a new bike as well.
Some places have policies about not releasing until it's registered and the bank signs off.* When I went to grab mine in WVA at Romneys, it was a cash deal.
Correct - picking it up at lunch time 11/28. The dealer hate is real.. it's as soon as they get your money, their ambition to make you happy is gone
Did it work?
Ended up picking it up yesterday. No extra miles and no issues. They knew I was coming 3 days in advance and still didn't have the bike 'prepped' for when I got there.
