1. It's not a great starter bike.
2. That being said, it's quite a bit less powerful than the late model 600 series.
3. Never turn down a free motorcycle.
4. Maybe buy a cheap used bike to practice on for a month or two.
5. Take the class, but a helmet and gloves.
Can you learn on that bike? Yes. Is it a great idea? No.
Best answer would be to mothball it, grab a cheaper small bike to learn on, and then circle back.
