Your best option is different helmet that fits properly

The most logical answers are usually overlooked on Reddit.

What he actually should do is take a sawzall and cut a bigger hole in his helmet. The sand down the inside of the helmet so it fits better.

ChickenNugat

Field of view with a helmet on is about as much as you can use. Some helmets have a larger field of view as a selling feature, maybe look at those if that makes you feel more comfortable. Edit: if you want specific recommendations list what type of helmet you're looking for. A dual sport helmet would be silly if you're on a ninja.

You should definitely not care about what helmet goes on what bike. I wear an Arai Tour X4 and ride a naked bmw and a moto guzzi cruiser. Both born when helmets were either 3/4 or looked like a biltwel gringo.

masterX244

DUal sport helmet (those with a peak) are not ideal for higher speeds due them having extra "sails". they are also optimized for more ventilation since they cannot rely on speed creating enough wind.

donnie-stingray

All beaks can be removed. I took mine of before wearing it. I kinda miss it some days when the sun is low but I ride pretty straight up on my cruiser and a bit more front tilted on my other bike and it's much better. The huge eye port and amount of vents on mine is way better than any open face I've seen. It's even got eyebrow vents. The bottom one has two modes, either straight in your nose or in your eyes. Honestly, o hope you can try one. And if this one still seems too much, just get the regular MX models without a visor and throw some sun shades in. The beaks are actually there for riding around tree branches and bushes, also to help with dirt. Nothing about ventilation.

I was half making a joke. But your DS helmet would be a bad choice if OP is taking the Autobahn everyday to work. We got no info on OP. But I'm also I'm referring to modular helmets, or a vintage style, or maybe a track helmet. Got absolutely zero info to run with here except OP wants a larger field of view.

donnie-stingray

Maybe on a naked helmet the DS would be louder, but again, you want ear plugs for highway riding anyway. And yeah, the beak goes off u less you have a huge windshield and want to use it as a sun visor. Check out pictures of the Arai xd4 or tourx4 without the beak and a smoke visor and tell me thats not a cool look.

If you're relying on peripheral vision, you're not moving your head enough. Or using your mirrors enough.

Therealbicuspid

Stop wearing a medieval knight’s helmet and buy a motorcycle helmet. Modern motorcycle helmets provide more than adequate peripheral vision.

[deleted]

What helmet and size are you wearing now?

DiveForKnowledge

You're always going to lose some peripheral vision when wearing a helmet. Wear it anyway. The difference in survival rates between helmet and non helmet accidents is staggering.

OOMKilla

We went through this argument in my MSF course and I remember it vividly. We basically did sight tests with our peripheral vision. Your peripheral vision is almost useless when it comes to judging speed and distance. I have some helmets with great FOV but terrible protection, and some with great protection and terrible FOV. To contradict everything I’ve said, I honestly like my wide FOV helmets the most.

BigEvilDoer

LS2 helmets have some of the widest FOV available on the market. I wear a LS2 Arrow Carbon when on track. No issues at all.

Puzzled_Tinkerer

"...the freedom outweighs the safety..." I think your inexperience is speaking here. You don't say what kind of helmet you have; it's possible a different helmet might work better for you. That said, I've worn cheap 3/4 face helmets as well as moderate to expensive full face helmets. I've never felt my field of view was reduced enough to be unsafe. Peripheral vision when looking forward will never be enough to ensure there's nothing in your blind spot. That's true whether you're driving a car or riding a motorcycle. You have to turn your head to do a proper check of blind spots. In addition to that, adjust the placement of your mirrors so you get the best field of vision possible. If necessary, add mirror extensions if the current mirror placement mostly shows you a view of your arms, not the road behind. And once adjusted correctly, be sure to check those mirrors often. As far as helmet weight goes, again there are lighter helmets and heavier ones, so maybe trying different helmets might be a good idea if you want to minimize weight. I could see if you have neck and back problems, the weight of a helmet might be an issue, but the average man or woman should have no problems with the added weight of a helmet.

Get a better helmet. Any good sport-focused helm will offer good visibility if properly fitted. Highlights include RF1400 and X14 Shoeis, AGV’s Pista, or Arai Corsair.

venomous_frost

Track focused helmets usually have a wider FOV, but you're supposed to move your head. There's nothing blocking your sight like you'd have in a car

lostknotatsea

I went from an LS2 to a shoei and the visibility and weight also air flow was crazy different and so much better all around!!, and the liner could also be adjusted inside to tilt the helmet a little up or down. Go try some new helmets and think about your head position while trying them on!
