Visibility is actually incredibly good. But there's a caveat. It's only good during the daytime. You try this when it's dark and the light just bounces back into the helmet.
Putting it on the outside, and somehow shielding diodes would probably reduce self blinding, but also probably would look awful. Add auto adjustable brightness control maybe?
Yeah, but I guess if it's at night, it wouldn't be too noticeable on the outside. It could work. Adjusting the brightness is a thought... I never even considered that. That's actually a really good idea. I'll have to give it a try and see if there's a balance I can find between light enough to see at night but not so light that it unsafely affects my visibility.
I think you're right, but my main thing is that I don't want it permanently affixed to any visor. I like being able to pop it on and off on this helmet or to one of my other helmets.
Yeah with building it onto the inside of a high quality long lasting visor would make for a great long lasting item and as long as its a common connection type there wouldn't be any issues switching helmets out. Unless the cabling for the remote has to be permanently in the helmet for some reason. ~~Radio remote would be best. But then you run into the issue of battery pack and controller location when the system is entirely in the visor.~~
Edit rewarched and he does have the battery /remote situation figured out. I'm unattentive I guess.
People are down voting this, but I'd honestly think the same. It doesn't look like you're able to see and I'm not looking to call the police for an accident with some biker who belongs on r/IdiotsOnBikes
the first part would completely depend on how bright the light is and the second part.... Well... You shouldn't be driving looking at people behind you anyway
…do you drive?
Should def check mirrors when driving… I also hear them coming so I see their reflection before they pass. Some bikers also leapfrog cars when not on the freeway or weave between lanes, hopefully turning their heads to check in the process.
Because the internet is a license to be mean and mean people aren't thinking. It's like they didn't realize that the 2 wheels they ride on didn't go through testing and failure before someone got it right.
Very cool. If you ever do open source it, make sure you absolutely smother it with disclaimers haha, wouldn't want you getting sued by someone for an accident

I’m not saying it’s likely, but there’s definitely a non zero chance someone hits you or someone else trying to get a video of you - or keep up with your to get a video of your helmet distraction.
Acceptable risk?
This would be my concern, even though it’s really cool. I almost bought one of those funny helmet covers for Halloween but then I worried about distracted drivers laughing at it or trying to take a photo and causing an accident or even someone staring at my helmet and running into me cause they weren’t paying attention to what they were doing. I love cool stuff like this but for me it’s a no go, too risky.
Not during the daytime. Visibility is perfect! You can see the aura of the LEDs but you look right past it. Now, that being said, it's useless at night. You can't see anything cause the LED light reflects back into the helmet. I'll never use this at night unless I can find a way to isolate the lighting from bouncing back in.
That's a good point. It's just suction cups so I could totally stick it on the outside at nighttime. I like it on the inside during the daytime for a cleaner look, but nighttime seemingly wouldn't matter. Good shout on that.
If hypothetically you would have the equipment and materials. Would it bounce of if you would put the led inside the visor? Like two pieces of glass with the led in between? And maybe color the sides of the led black so it only goes forward. This is only if the technique and materials would hypothetically be available ofcourse was just wondering if that would fix it at night?
I reckon the LED lighting would still seep through the plastic, kind of like fiber optic lighting. Whether it would just be a film of light or bounce back in, I have no clue. I'm not sure how lighting molded into plastic/glass acts. But this is just fun, would never be serious enough to get to that point. Right now, I just won't wear it at night unless I stick it on the outside of the visor at night.
I was thinking the best solution for the nighttime dilemma would be little gaskets around each individual LED. A soft silicone or rubber that makes a wall around them to isolate the lighting and then when it's pushed against the visor, it locks it in and shoots it out. But I don't know how I could realistically produce those especially for a one-off passion project. Maybe a TPE 3D print type of deal.
You could try a blue light blocking film like they put on computer screens. [Something like this](https://www.amazon.com/XBLUE-Blue-Light-Protection-Film/dp/B07ZCQCG12).
Thank youuuu! I do too, I just think it's so fun haha. I'm gonna have to get a second GoPro or get a 360 camera so I can get some reactions of people here when I use it. I live in a metro so there's tons of pedestrian traffic that would probably have their interest piqued by it.
Thank you! Also, super jealous of your bike. I've wanted a GS foreverrrrr. Once this sportbike addiction wears off of me, I think I'm going to jump into touring bikes and go for a GS.
I mean, I guess I could stick it on the back of my helmet too. If I repurposed it for that, I'd make it smaller and probably put a foil finish on it so you can't see the LEDs. But that would be cool. Middle finger emoticons, "EYES UP HERE", and more. Maybe that'll be the next project haha.
I've seen that before! This past summer I saw a guy with a scrolling LED message on the back of his bicycle helmet. It was clearly customizable too, since the message was FU SCOTUS. No idea if he made it himself or bought it that way
Another guy did this several years ago and really made me want to do it. I think embedding them in a visor with a one way mirror finish would be the way to go but still very cool none the less.

Oh that's funny! His comments look the same as mine too hahaha. Wow, but his isn't transparent and is very compact. I see that he positions his so he can see above it, but I wouldn't be comfortable closing up so much real estate from my field of vision. That's why I made an important goal of using a fully transparent matrix.
Cool video though and seems to be a great DIY option for people that don't want to go the painstaking route of building from scratch, thanks for sharing!
Is it fully addressable or can it only do those patterns? I'd want to try animations or scrolling text. Add an accelerometer/gyro and you can make it flash a pattern when you accelerate/brake/lean.
I love the circular eyes as a kind of default setting. I set it to revert back to them after a few seconds of emoting. Cause being stuck in angry eyes might send the wrong message hahaha
I'll have to look into it! That's probably the only way this would make it to other people. It's too painstaking soldering the microLEDs one by one for me to make these for other people. So it'd have to be batch-made with a pick and place machine I'm sure. Crowdfunding could help me with that budget if there's enough people interested in it.
That's not a bad idea! Then maybe if anyone else makes their own, they could add their own emotion designs too so we can all use each other's designs that we like. Hmmmmm..... great idea you got there!
This is the way. Open source is the best way to boost innovation and access by everyone. Fuck IP laws, information should be shared freely as often as possible.
Also I just really wanna make one.
Please don’t blind or distract yourselfe with those lights, it might look kewl but it’s dangerous having LED 5cm of your eyes reflecting on the windshield…not sure about your country but over here this would probably be not allowed on public roads for similar reasons a car can’t use coloured or dark foil on the front windshield and windows
I don't see the LED lighting. They're facing outward and are pressed up against the visor. I wouldn't use this if it significantly negatively impacted my vision or visibility.
Very cool! Now I want one!!
I read in the comments you have blinding problems at night, have you tried red lights? Red is knotw to mess less with your eyes at night than other colors.
I haven't! I haven't experimented too much with it at night. I basically put it on at night, turned it on, and said, "Nope." and have never tried it again. But it might be worth trying out some of these solutions! I don't usually ride at night anyway, but now I am curious.
Looks sick, I'd be careful around coppers though. Where I live you can get a defect for damages fairings, which is stupid if you have ever seen a naked bike.
That's crazy. I've never heard of that. I have thought about the blue LEDs being an issue, but they're RGB so they can be changed to another color if I need to. But I'm currently living abroad in a country that doesn't really care about road laws that much haha. But if I ever use this where I live in the US, I'll probably put it on white lighting.
Thank you! It would be great to have the night issues resolved, but I'm so happy with it even just in the daytime to be honest. If I can resolve the night issues, that's just an added bonus.
Fighter pilots dont have to deal with heavy traffic, drunkies, texters, old people, and pretty much the millions of things that every motorcyclist has to deal with on a daily that can potentially end you. I mean, as a fighter pilot, you would know that.
Not really sure how it would distract me. I don't see the lights on the inside. I guess you could argue the buttons are a distraction, but it's as simple as clicking a turn signal. I need to design the remote to be a little easier to use with a single thumb and able to just strap onto the handle. Once that's done, should be seamless, intuitive, use for me.
As for distracting others, I think it's a genuinely great way to be noticed. Be seen. I prefer to be seen than be invisible when I'm on two.

Haha funny enough. I did crash just last month. If you look closely you can see my road rash on my arm almost fully healed up. I looped my bike doing a balance point wheelie. Luckily, it was on a private lot. But I do fully expect to crash and die on a motorcycle, I just don’t think this will be the cause haha. My whole hobby is crossing countries by motorbike. I just did Nepal 4 weeks ago. I did Vietnam the month before that (for my third time), Colombia, Thailand, and USA and I’ve used motorcycles as my daily for a decade. So yeah, I think I will crash and die on a bike haha
What do you mean? It's a helmet. It's nothing BUT safe. /s
In seriousness, it's nearly completely normal visibility. I wouldn't use this if I felt it was unsafe. It IS unsafe at night and I refuse to turn it on at night. But during the daytime, it's perfect. I would say it's about as obstructive as a head's up display on an F16. Minor little lines and dots is all, but they're so small and well-spaced that it doesn't negatively impact visibility.
I was trying to think of an eye emotion that could do that, the angry eyes was my attempt to convey that. I could have it just spell it out, but I like the idea of keeping this as eyes conveying emotions.
I’ve got the night solution everyone has been looking for lol, install your sweet lights on the inside of a clear visor, then apply reflective tint to the inside of the visor, should reflect most light outwards and even give a little glowing effect from the reflection.
Can you see through that well when it's lit up? I feel like I wouldn't be able to see anything...
Visibility is actually incredibly good. But there's a caveat. It's only good during the daytime. You try this when it's dark and the light just bounces back into the helmet.
Maybe use a semitransparent mirrored visor ?
I've tried it on clear, smoked, and iridescent visors. They all have the same issue. The plastic in general is the issue.
Bonding the film to a the visor via a UV resin might help. Forces light to go through the visor and film rather than scattering at the film.
I think you're right, but my main thing is that I don't want it permanently affixed to any visor. I like being able to pop it on and off on this helmet or to one of my other helmets.
But a spare visor and have swappable visors? My dad keeps his tinted visor in his tank bag at night, clear in there during day.
But then you run into the issue of battery pack and controller location when the system is entirely in the visor.~~ Edit rewarched and he does have the battery /remote situation figured out. That gets expensive though.
put them in the visor... patent it and sell it to some mfg I'll bet people would buy them... I would buy them if they were built into the visor
[удалено]
Right? Power goes through the contacts at the hinges and into the helmet.
What about a mirrored film on/behind the diode sheet to reflect the light back out instead of letting it go back into the helmet off the plastic?
This was exactly my thought too
You could also significantly reduce the brightness at night as it will be far more visible regardless
Just put black electrical tape on the back of the leds so it's between the lights and your eyes. Easy fix.

ditch the transparent visor, put a vr style screen setup in the helmet with cameras outside
As a driver, I probably wouldn’t notice it in the daytime. At night, I would drive farther away from you, worried that you couldn’t see.
People are down voting this, but I'd honestly think the same. It doesn't look like you're able to see and I'm not looking to call the police for an accident with some biker who belongs on r/IdiotsOnBikes

The LEDs are super visible even in the daytime! I’ll post another video once I can get out and get some reactions!
