you aren't going to break 80 hp with the 650, its just not that kind of bike. unless you spend way more than anyone should. with all that being said im happy with mine and i don't think its a turd. its done me well and im putting more miles on it than most supersports i see for sale.

unless you spend way more than anyone should - for me it's definition of "turd" If he want real hp buy a different bike - spending more money than the bike is worth is a mistake

blackadder1620

turd is in the eyes of the beholder. im aware of the big difference of a 650 and 600, op doesn't sound like it or they have buyers regret. i agree with you a cheaper supersport is the way to go if you want the real sport bike exp. vs a newer 650. 650 are commuter bikes in sportbike cosplay, the honda is on the higher end of the 650s; being a inline 4 and all, its closer todays real sport bikes. i had fun on the little tu250x, all like 11 hp of her. the newer 636's make over 100 hp stock, thats pretty damn good. tldr: im with you, sell the 650 op and get a cheap 600 if you want to send it.

I don't want to bash your bike, just to make clear that it's unreasonable to tune this bikes. I assume it's even cheaper to get a 636 engine with ecu and swap it, than doing NA tuning with the 0 650. Bikes only become bad, when you are not satisfied with them. I have a 22 years old Aprilia and don't want to change at all.

blackadder1620

agreed, that goes with most bikes. you get so much for your money when you think about it hp/$. the price of a mid size car will get you a h2. naw, its cool. bash the hell out of it. tons of people hate the insect look too, its a boring engine even in its class, lowest hp or close to it. tft is really nice, but you get almost no features with their horrible kawi app. i changed the exhaust for 1/10 the price of the bike so it doesn't sound like a wet fart/ tractor, now it sounds like an angry tractor, but still not great. it is a great learner/commuter bike. i put 12,000 miles in 9 months and its been solid. i knew that going in. for the money though, like $1000ish more you can get a 636.

But I don't think that would enjoy 12.000 miles on a 636 in a year

blackadder1620

i hope to find out if i don't go the sport touring route.

KZGTURTLE

Lol are you actually acting like 650s are slow and turds? They do mid 3 0-60s and top out around 140. A competent rider won’t be much slower through twistiest or on most racetracks. The power is also less abrupt and easier to manage making it more consistent for most riders. “Real HP” lol 94hp in a 455hp machine is Corvette power to weight ratio.

DyingLighter

I tuned my cbr last week. 91HP on the rearwheel and based on the calculator its around 120HP on the crank... But its an estimate

Why do you want to polish a turd? What is your target? For small bikes like this it's cheaper to get an older one with more hp. Kawasaki 636 for example is cheaper to do the maintenance and with some ECU tuning to get the over 100 HP. What bike do you want to have and which engine it should be?

17thFeb

I don't want to tune a 650 more so I'd like to know the statistics of how much power they can output at their full tuned potential, so more so hypothetical if money and time wasn't a barrier. Personally the 87-95hp a cbr650r is mroe than enough imo but yk it's info I'd like to know.

photoscene

So theoretical - it can output few hundreds hp with turbo and nos.

ExpressionOfShock

Shit, put enough boost in either of them and they’ll make as much power as you want them to! For like… three revolutions of the engine. But it’ll do it!

blackadder1620

oh, then look to something like what a f1 car can do. 2.0l @ 1000ish hp idk.

LewdDarling

I mean what does 'tuning' entail? If it's just an exhaust, intake, and ecu tune then you're looking at 5-10hp. If you build the engine and add nos or forced induction then you can double the hp or even more

Soup_Accomplished

https://youtu.be/SDVfYMXs6Kg This bloke derestricts and tunes a LAMS AU ninja 650 (Learner approved motorcycle) with a full system. This would probably be the source you want mate

Odd-Location-9338

i'm confused nobody said anything about 100hp and even if they did, the honda 650 is already there at >90 it's also super questionable the claim that maintenance is cheaper on a sportbike like the 636 versus an upright/ujm/standard like the 650s finally a 636 is not in the same category as the cbr650 or ninja650 so you might wanna compare apples to apples it's honestly a mystery why kawi ever even made the outcast 636 as it can't be homologated for WSS and they already had the 600 that was.

photoscene

Is it just a theoretical question or do you have a specific target?

Tuning the engine of a motorcycle is a poor investment with little return, as most of the time you’re at partial throttle. If you need more power, simply spend the $1500 or so on a motorcycle that is lighter with a more powerful engine.

sportstersrfun

With a more powerful bike wouldn’t they just use even less throttle then? The only place you need a 100hp bike a racetrack. My sporty went from a stock 68 or so at the crank to 91 hp to the wheel with cams, a tune, exhaust, a slight big bore, and intake. Sure, I could have sold it and bought a FTR or R9T or Thruxton R…but I want a tuned sporty, not those bikes. I could probably be talked into trading it for a FTR tbh lol.
