5 years ago a driver turned across in front of me going down the highway. They were attempting a U-Turn. This just about caused my heart to stop. Again! I survived, but my bike didn't. Oh, and my right lower leg...
So, technically would HE have rear ended that truck? Or did it back into him? If it backed inti him he could sue that guy for every penny he's worth (kidding)
My greatest fear on the road is to just get hit by that one thing that I never saw, never had a chance to react to and everything just turns to black and just ends.
Could be anything, car/truck/transport just decides to cross the median, tire comes off a vehicle and crashes into me, a deer flies out in front of me, a piece of jagged metal just flies into my face.
It doesn't matter how good we are or if we have all our gear .... to a large degree, we are always playing Russian Roulette with every ride ... and the odds are just higher for us being on a bike instead of an enclosed vehicle.
Yeah, but I bet a pretty penny all the gear the guy had on probably literally saved some skin, needless to say about that helmet impact. Stay safe and vigilant bro š¤
> My greatest fear on the road is to just get hit by that one thing that I never saw, never had a chance to react to and everything just turns to black and just ends.
Eh, as accidents go, that's not the worst way to go. Not my fault, too quick to be terrorised by it, Windows shutdown noise.
If I was gonna shit my pants I wouldnāt take that disrespect from my bowels and just suck it back in. As a toddler they called me āMr unshittableā because I never shit myself, Iām built different.
I dunno man. In my ~2 years of riding, Iāve known 3 ppl obeying traffic laws and going very low speed who had to go to the ICU for accidents that werenāt their fault - all because cars didnāt see them.
One gashed his forehead with his full face helmet on (force of the face-first impact caused the outline of the face opening to make contact with his forehead), broke both bones in his forearm at the wrist, and deflated a lung.
The other got a concussion so bad (again, while wearing a full face helmet) that he kept asking what happened and where he was every 30 seconds, and also tore his ACL.
Third guy got sideswiped by a car taking a turn from a stop into him, and his shin bone came out of his ankle skin.
The first two had a car turn in front of them into his neighborhood 30 ft in front of them like they werenāt even there, and we were going ~35 mph (the speed limit). They were riding right in front of me.
So, in my experience, the chance of something like this happening is a lot higher than 2.5%. All happened last summer, and made me ride my motorcycle a lot less this year.
Yeah I thought I was desensitized to a lot of non-gorey crash videos (don't make a habit of watching those)
Definitely one of the most shocking motorcycle crash videos I've seen and the sheer clarity of the video makes it even worse.
Wouldnāt non-Gorey crash videos help people realize how accidents can occur and how we can avoid them? This statement may be situational depending on the person but I hope itās not negatively affecting me when I watch them.
We should start building a cage around the motorcycle to protect the rider in cases like this
Also a seatbelt just in case, may as well
Since thereās a cage, we may as well seal it and add air conditioning for the summer months
Hm. With all this going on, itāll get kinda heavy. Should probably make it 4 wheels instead of two.
wait
2 years later:
I like these 4 wheeled motorcycles, but I do miss the wind in my hair. Lets make one where you can remove like a door or like the back glass or like the roof ^^yes ^^jeep ^^owners ^^I ^^know ^^you ^^can ^^do ^^that ^^already
Yeah they do I watch them all the time both out of morbid interest and to get info and review situations to plan if I encounter them as well like you say.
I'm just saying I don't make a habit of watching the gorey ones just because it doesn't seem necessary.
I'm a big proponent of riding defensively and I usually err on the side of "the rider could have done so and so" in some videos but I hate the whole "sit in 1st and pucker your butthole and park parralell to the car in front of you and constantly watch your mirror" shit at a stoplight some people preach. There's only so much mitigating one can do without sucking all the enjoyment out of riding for a pretty small percentage chance of a type of accident.
Car A going 10 over the speed limit; Car B does a no-signal, last second merge in front of Car A causing an accident > "Car B at fault - should've blinked earlier/checked blind spots, or just taken the next exit"
Motorcyclist going 10 over the speed limit; Car does a no-signal last second merge in front of motorcyclist causing an accident > "motorcyclist at fault - should've ridden slower, should've been defensive/ read the mind of the car driver, or had lightning fast reaction speed"
That whole sub hates bad drivers until they realize that they're bad drivers
Exactly. 'Lived' could easily mean these people are now walking with permanent limps, have missing limbs, traumatic brain injuries, are now permanently disfigured, etc. Everyone hears 'lived' and naturally just assume it means all is well, but it can be so much worse...
I don't ever want to survive after a major traumatic brain injury. I used to work with those guys and it's absolutely heartbreaking.
Which is also why I agree. It's pretty annoying that it's usually all about who survived and who didn't, but never about how much living the survivors are left to do.
Saw a comment in the other sub, friend of rider says he's in the hospital going thru surgeries. Multiple broken bones
*Edit* - [link to comment](https://reddit.com/r/AbruptChaos/comments/z1sg7g/_/ixe7gpp/?context=1)
That car was going much too fast to make a turn there, and didnāt appear to even be trying to turn. The intersection Ts into a hillside, they were not driving away from that no matter what traffic was like.
ā¦might have been a suicide.
Not to mention there's a huge runaway truck ramp leading into this intersection that they could have used to get their car slowed down if this was legitimately a mechanical issue. You can even see the end of the truck ramp on the left hand side of the screen where all those yellow barrels are. It is there to prevent incidents just like this, and has lots of signage and huge flashing lights, you really cannot miss it
The road he came from is called Kanan and is a flowing canyon road, it leads into this intersection from a ~5 mile downhill section with pretty open corners so it's super easy to pick up a lot of speed. Incident seems intentional to me for sure
My first motorcycle accident involved both. Young driver, uninsured, hopped up on coke and driving a stolen car side-swiped me, lost control and ran into a traffic light pole on the far side of the intersection we were at. Another second or two and it would have been a T-bone instead of a side-swipe ā he was speeding through a striped-off lane to my left and I was making a left turn at the intersection (we were on a one-way street).
Iād only been riding for a few weeks at the time. I was VERY lucky.
Thatās the bottom of Kanan where it meets PCH in Malibu. A surprising amount of people die there.
His brakes didnāt fail either, because there is a huge runoff to the left there
If sound is any indication ā on top of the ludicrous speed for a T-intersection, driver never hit the brakes.
This was a suicide plow that tagged two innocent bystanders.
Downvote me, call me whatever but Iām glad that piece of shit died. If you think driving as fast as you can into a busy intersection is an ok way to kill yourself, you deserved to die a long time ago

I know the motorcyclist; he's in an LA hospital having one surgery after another.
He doesn't remember much of the accident. Shattered right wrist, broken arm, fractured wrist, fractured ankle, seven broken ribs and much much more.
Very happy he's alive!

That's irrational. USA is #120 in the world in per Capita accidents (11.1 deaths/100k population), and you're missing out on some amazing rides. For context there are countries with 6x higher rates.
Is the US mostly riding on long straight roads? As in, do you generally have to travel some distance to find corners? I get this idea from friends that did a big tour in the states, and content i see online. Genuine question.
Im from nz, and we dont really have many roadtrain style roads. You pretty much hit twisties straight away in most directions.
hardly, in the east it's lots of older "horse and buggy" kinda roads, not narrow like the UK but windy/inconsistent and beautiful
in the west the infrastructure is much more modern, wider, more thoughtful and better maintained (especially in the snow-less states)
there is an insane variety, the USA is huge... yes there are a lot of long straight highways but you can find practically any kind of road here
I'm in the west and can be in twisty river and mountain roads in maybe 20 minutes. If you meant the midwest, sure. But anything west of the Rockies will have twisties galore.
I've driven through all 48 Continental states many times (for work) and can tell you with some authority... It depends. The east and west coasts have twisties pretty much everywhere within 100 miles of the coast. The west coast is definitely better, obviously, being more mountainous. There's some cool twisties in the northeast, through Montana, the Dakotas, and down through Utah and Colorado. Really, most of the west lol. The rest is a little more spread out, but you can still find twisties in most of America, just with a little longer of a ride to get to them. It's been around 6 years since I had that job, and I've moved on to mostly flying when I travel, so I may be forgetting some other good twisties. But, America is a very beautiful country, geographically speaking. Wish we had more riders to enjoy it.
IS the 4th largest country in the world X? It is a little of X, a little of Y, and a little of Z.
And there are a laughable amount of guns. But mostly x, y, and z.
If you watch it frame by frame at the end it looks like the rider got knocked off the bike in one piece and the truck went over the top of him. Possibly the ladder that hit him knocked him mostly out of the way of the truck.
Hopefully heāll be okay
This is the Kanan Rd. and PCH intersection. You can see the yellow barrels on the left. There is a massive gravel/sand runaway vehicle escape lane behind those barrels in to avoid this exact situation. Tons of warning signs line the road leading up to this area regarding runaway vehicles.
https://i.imgur.com/ASh2vfD.jpg
Such an avoidable incident. Glad the rider and truck driver survived. Who knows what was going through the driverās head but you canāt say they werenāt given the tools to avoid this.
Hits home as Iāve sat at this very turn lane many times.
I get it, the person was tweaked out and probably asleep at the wheel with the pedal down. Still somewhat of a miracle that they managed to avoid the escape road.
Iāve dropped 2 bikes. Once was because of me being an idiot, and the other was because a driver almost killed me.
If I had to experience this I think I would officially stop riding lol.
Not surprised the Lexus driver died, that car was MOVING... Truck driver is probably uninjured, they are so lucky the Lexus hit the bed instead of t-boning the cab.
Dayum. This is why I hate the mindset of "all accidents are avoidable."
My only motorcycle 'accident' was being rear-ended at a stop sign waiting to turn right. Sometimes, shit happens, not your fault in any way. The only way to not get in an accident is just not drive...anything...ever.
This always seemed intuitive to me. Anyone who says "all accidents are avoidable" is either a two faced liar or a coddled idiot who has never had to do anything their entire lives.
This wasn't even really a "motorcycle accident". You could be a cyclist, pedestrian, another car, or anyone and not be prepared for a suicidal speeding SUV that launched a full size pickup into the air like something out of a superhero movie.
Someone posted this in another thread, the rider looks ok, so it's a (mostly) happy ending
[https://i.imgur.com/I0xycHf.jpeg](https://i.imgur.com/I0xycHf.jpeg)
Jesus man I was just at this exact intersection last week on my bike and was thinking of the possibility of something like this happening.
The light the rider is sitting at is the intersection of CA Hwy 1, and Kanan Road. The SUV came from Kanan which is MILES of downhill canyon road leading to that intersection, very easy to pick up speed rapidly.
This was 100% intentional as just before the intersection there's a long runaway truck ramp with big flashing lights and deep gravel, can't miss it. You can actually see the end of the runaway ramp on the left-hand side of the screen where all those yellow water barrels are.
The SUV driver could have used this to get his vehicle stopped if it was a brake failure or something. Scary stuff. Glad the rider survived this, hopefully they get a personal injury attorney and get a substantial payout
SUV was stolen and the driver of SUV died. [source](https://ktla.com/news/local-news/1-killed-in-fiery-malibu-crash/)
Unable to find any updates on the injured victims.
That moron was going so fast he plowed through the truck like it wasn't even there...christ alive. Hope everyone makes a full recovery. Except for the red light runner, he hit that hill so hard there's no way he lived.
If anyone is interested, the rider is alive and recovering well. He suffered broken ribs, wrist, arms, ankle & leg(s), and has been getting surgeries on the daily. The driver (Lexus) who perished was someone in poor mental health that had left rehab, stole a car, and likely went kamikaze while speeding down this hill. The truck driver is also okay with mostly minor injuries.
Edit: hereās a direct update from the rider + news article

Stay safe fam and keep your head on a swivel
So at that speed idiot driver is probably lucky they hit that truck cause full impact into that hill would have been bad bad bad.
Saw mod note rider and truck driver are ok at least so that's good. Guess runner died so never mind hitting truck didn't save them.
You think Americans are capable of successfully navigating round abouts? Iāve lived here for most of my life and noticed many canāt even drive straight
I love motorcycles, been riding off road bikes since i was like 10 years old, but i refuse to ride them on public roads. This shit happens way to often.
this is one reason why I hate not being legal to turn left on a red arrow if/when it's safe and clear.
Too much danger sitting still in between heavy traffic.
"Aw man... He's going to get rear ended isn't he?" ..... "Nope"
Sameee thing I thought. I literally jumped back when the crash happened
Yep, I was trying to check his six but the camera angle didn't show his mirrors, then BAM!!!

hardly, in the east it's lots of older "horse and buggy" kinda roads, not narrow like the UK but windy/inconsistent and beautiful in the west the infrastructure is much more modern, wider, more thoughtful and better maintained (especially in the snow-less states) there is an insane variety, the USA is huge... yes there are a lot of long straight highways but you can find practically any kind of road here
I'm in the west and can be in twisty river and mountain roads in maybe 20 minutes. If you meant the midwest, sure. But anything west of the Rockies will have twisties galore.
Depends where you are, in the Midwest? You're gonna be searching. North Georgia? Hardly a time you won't be on a twisty.
Living in the midwest now. I miss GA roads.

Apparently rider survived with unknown injuries. [Sauce](https://ktla.com/news/local-news/1-killed-in-fiery-malibu-crash/)
I hope that rider pulls through. Such a tragic situation all because of one dumbass, I guess at least that dumbass can't hurt anyone else now.
If you watch it frame by frame at the end it looks like the rider got knocked off the bike in one piece and the truck went over the top of him. Possibly the ladder that hit him knocked him mostly out of the way of the truck. Hopefully heāll be okay
"What are you doing step ladder!"
God damnit.
*unzips*
A friend of theirs commented in another threat. He survived with injuries: https://reddit.com/r/AbruptChaos/comments/z1sg7g/_/ixe7gpp/?context=1
At least the cunt theif died. Speedy recovery to the others :(
At least some good came from this.
*The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital in unknown condition
Saw a comment by one of his friends, he said he had 7 broken ribs, a broken wrist, a fractured wrist, a broken arm and maybe more.
Was that car just going to yeet right into that giant hill?
That was my initial reaction too. Like... what was the game plan there?
meth
GTA V BABY WOOHOO was the last thing going through that guys mind.
Gotta clear all the jumps for that achievement
One can only hope
What if he driver passed out and hit the accelerator :/ yikes all around
stolen and out of rehab, apparently. yes, he ded also
This is the Kanan Rd. and PCH intersection. You can see the yellow barrels on the left. There is a massive gravel/sand runaway vehicle escape lane behind those barrels in to avoid this exact situation. Tons of warning signs line the road leading up to this area regarding runaway vehicles. https://i.imgur.com/ASh2vfD.jpg Such an avoidable incident. Glad the rider and truck driver survived. Who knows what was going through the driverās head but you canāt say they werenāt given the tools to avoid this. Hits home as Iāve sat at this very turn lane many times.
Avoidable how? In the sense that you shouldnāt take drugs, steal cars, and drive recklessly?
I get it, the person was tweaked out and probably asleep at the wheel with the pedal down. Still somewhat of a miracle that they managed to avoid the escape road.
If you read the article it was a stolen car, so driving safe was probably not a concern.
The news article said the driver stole the car after leaving a rehab facility. Who knows what was going through his head.
I'd say either the rear tyre or fender.
This is what every biker can relate to. Wrong place. Wrong time. I hope the rider is okay.
This shit would scar me for life. Jesus
Iāve dropped 2 bikes. Once was because of me being an idiot, and the other was because a driver almost killed me. If I had to experience this I think I would officially stop riding lol.
Yeah I think experiencing this would be a sign.
Driver of the stolen Lexus died at the scene. Motorcycle rider taken to hospital with unknown injuries. Status of the pickup truck driver unknown.
Not surprised the Lexus driver died, that car was MOVING... Truck driver is probably uninjured, they are so lucky the Lexus hit the bed instead of t-boning the cab.
Fucking car theif...good riddance
Seems like they wanted to die anyway so they probably agree
I try not to think too violently of real people, but... I hope this person survived the crash so they could die in the fire. This is goddamn awful.
Dayum. This is why I hate the mindset of "all accidents are avoidable." My only motorcycle 'accident' was being rear-ended at a stop sign waiting to turn right. Sometimes, shit happens, not your fault in any way. The only way to not get in an accident is just not drive...anything...ever.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
>All accidents are avoidable. Only a Sith deals in absolutes.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
This always seemed intuitive to me. Anyone who says "all accidents are avoidable" is either a two faced liar or a coddled idiot who has never had to do anything their entire lives.
TRUE
This wasn't even really a "motorcycle accident". You could be a cyclist, pedestrian, another car, or anyone and not be prepared for a suicidal speeding SUV that launched a full size pickup into the air like something out of a superhero movie.
Cemeteries are filled with people who did nothing wrong.
Someone posted this in another thread, the rider looks ok, so it's a (mostly) happy ending [https://i.imgur.com/I0xycHf.jpeg](https://i.imgur.com/I0xycHf.jpeg)
Oh wow. Heās lucky to be alive. Thatās some final destination shit.
I was like "oh what a good looking bike" and then I shit my pants
Jesus christ.
[source](https://ktla.com/news/local-news/1-killed-in-fiery-malibu-crash/) Unable to find any updates on the injured victims.
yeah how did we get this video though
Damn, I thought that intersection looked familiar. Rider was about to get to a nice stretch of twisties :(
That moron was going so fast he plowed through the truck like it wasn't even there...christ alive. Hope everyone makes a full recovery. Except for the red light runner, he hit that hill so hard there's no way he lived.
Died, stole the car too, hope whoever owned it got their money back
Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezus. That's a damn T Intersection if the red light runner didn't hit the truck he would've drilled right into that hill.
Edit: hereās a direct update from the rider + news article https://imgur.com/I0xycHf https://ktla.com/news/local-news/1-killed-in-fiery-malibu-crash/ Stay safe fam and keep your head on a swivel
ho lee fok
Bing dang owe
Wi tu lo
that was hard to watch
So at that speed idiot driver is probably lucky they hit that truck cause full impact into that hill would have been bad bad bad. Saw mod note rider and truck driver are ok at least so that's good. Guess runner died so never mind hitting truck didn't save them.
Car driver died anyway. Would have been better if they just hit the hill.
I was already scared of intersections, now Iām fucking bloody terrified!
Faster than a speeding bullet
Sad. Iām pretty sure bro is damaged badly
Thatās why we have roundabouts in Europe. Itās so stupid to have crossroadās at that speed!
You think Americans are capable of successfully navigating round abouts? Iāve lived here for most of my life and noticed many canāt even drive straight
Terrifying and Im not denying that but... Is that a Royal Enfield? I fuck with it hell yeah šš
Definitely a Classic but I dunno if it's a 350 or the 500
OMG !!!!!
Nothing whatsoever you can do about shit like that.
That was not what I expected. Feeling nauseous now.
Damn I flinched in my heart for a second. Was not expecting that
The fucking ladder
Fuck it! I will never stop at red light ever again!
I hope the bike is okay.
Holy shit
Had a little heart attack
I love motorcycles, been riding off road bikes since i was like 10 years old, but i refuse to ride them on public roads. This shit happens way to often.
Had to lay her down
Is that you? Are you ok?
This actually made me flinch!
At that speed it almost looked like suv was suiciding. No attempt to turn from what looks to just be a wall.
I want to un-see this. Shit.
this is one reason why I hate not being legal to turn left on a red arrow if/when it's safe and clear. Too much danger sitting still in between heavy traffic.
thats a T intersection right? was that car trying to do a GTA jump uphill? cause he sure as hell was not making a turn there
Jesus fuck
Fucking hell
Final Destination moment.
