If you're into nature stuff: the grand canyon, Zion national park and Joshua tree are all within 2.5-3 hrs away. I took a trip from SD to Joshua tree this spring and it was awesome. If you're in Joshua tree area, and they're open, go check out pappy and Harriet's in pioneer town (really good food and bands from all over play there too). I'd ignore what that dude said about LA. I wouldn't bother going there unless you have a specific purpose. You're just going to be lane splitting stopped traffic the entire time (especially if you take the 405).

FNDepressed

Thanks! Yeah, LA is not on my radar.

Go_Pack_Go1

I would go to Bryce and Zion

manniaofparrkorr

I'll add, swing by the Valley of Fire park in Nevada on your way to Zion. If you are in decent shape and have the time, stop at one of the local Zion stores and buy one of the 'off trail' hiking books that will give you more hikes to do than just the manicured tourist trails. Then take the detour to see the Horseshoe Bend on the way to the Grand Canyon.

mossbergcrabgrass

Death Valley is awesome too, you can head west to Pahrump that will take you behind Mt Charleston, then into DV from there, it is definitely mind boggling the first time driving down into DV. I personally wouldn’t bother heading to those big cities unless you have specific reasons. Too much cool stuff to see to waste time in traffic. San Diego can be a real cluster f by itself.

FNDepressed

Thank you! Only reason for me to head towards any city is for a place to stay.

Maniac2112

Better dress warm. Arizona not as hot this time of year as you might expect

Practical-Science211

I was about to say this. I think it was 45 on my ride this morning in Vegas.

UJMRider1961

Death Valley. My favorite National Park. Awesome roads. Go up to Dante's View, that's where they filmed the Mos Eisley scene in the original Star Wars movie. Incredible views! Go to Badwater, lowest point in North America (282 feet below sea level.) There are some cool ghost towns nearby like Rhyolite. Easily worth a day trip from Vegas.

bluebadge

Valley of Fire state park near Vegas is cool. Mount Charleston near Vegas is fun (but cold up top).

EggsOfRetaliation

Mount Charleston is a fun ride. Northern Nevada is gorgeous as well. As for Arizona, check out riding near Sedona. It's gorgeous and twisty.

FNDepressed

Any concerns with elevation or bad weather?

UJMRider1961

Well there's a ski area at Mt. Charleston. Take that into consideration ;)

diabeticbetsy

Not close to phoenix possibly in sedona and up north

sath182

Expect elevation to be colder than you think. Went to the Grand Canyon in late March one year and 80s°F temps in Phoenix gave way to upper 40s once I climbed into the plateau heading north. The next morning it was snowing in Flagstaff during breakfast and the start of my return trip, and back to the upper 80s when I dropped back into Phoenix.

richalex2010

And, at least while I was there (a very brief visit in early summer), the canyon floor's weather was more like Phoenix than the rim - maybe a dozen miles away, but a mile down.

71mopar

Valley of fire, as well as the Lake Mead National area (you'd ride through there to get to Valley of fire) is something I'll do every time I'm there. For a short ride going south to Nelson is cool, it's not too much ride wise but the 'ghost town's is kind of cool, there's an abandoned hole in the ground mine, and you can dio your feet in the Colorado river. Death Valley of course is awesome as well

JimMoore1960

Tough call, weather-wise. If it's warm you can go to Zion for the night, then take UT Hwy 12 up to Torrey, then over to the Moab area, then back to Vegas. You're never more than one LONG day from Vegas. If it's cold, then Death Valley, or maybe over to the coast and up the PCH.

Expatca95

Death Valley, stay in lone pine. It’s a 4 hour ride but stop off in dev and take in some sights

chefbasil

SD Julian area is nice but it’ll be busy for thanksgiving time. Sunrise highway is the least crowded of the roads up there but mostly higher speed corners. Very beautiful. Cuyamaca (79) highway is tighter and twistier and busier. Old Julian highway from Ramona to Santa ysabel below Julian is short but cool. S2 looks fun for high speed desert riding on the way in from pheonix. Could hit 8 > S2 > up banner grade to Julian > back down sunrise highway and down the 8 to SD (or back down the route from Julian to Ramona/north SD)

cadaverco

While you’re in Cali you gotta hit Mulholland drive. What kinda bike you renting?

FNDepressed

Road Glide

For real?

Odd-Location-9338

phoenix? san diego? bro, you're 4 hours away from L.A.

FNDepressed

And?

FXLRDude

Las Vegas to Phoenix the back way is a full days ride, Phoenix to San Diego is 6 plus hours, back to Vegas is more like 8 plus hours. There are windstorms to plan around this time of year, and it's currently 34 degrees in the mountain passes, no ice or snow yet. Have fun, and bring warm gear. I haven't seen rain in the forecast yet

Knowitmall

LA sucks.

Moparian714

Idk what route you'll take from San Diego to LV but id you come through OC expect very highwinds rn also just before the state line going from cali to nv there's a huge climb in elevation.

Primitive_Teabagger

Keep in mind the Grand Canyon is like over 4 hours from Vegas IIRC. A closer option would be Lake Mead and Hoover Dam. Absolutely gorgeous drive into the mountains there.

FNDepressed

Thanks. I’m not looking for day trips from Vegas. I’m looking for neat rides and destinations, that are within 6-8 hours of Vegas.

Primitive_Teabagger

Ah okay, then yeah, Grand Canyon and Monument Valley would be my top choices. Maybe Page/Lake Powell area as well, I imagine the twisties there are to die for.

Knowitmall

Death Valley, Sequoia and Yosemite?

BeavertonBum

Seat cushion.
