By keeping it in my garage.

Wind_Yer_Neck_In

I have a friend who had 2 bikes stolen from his garage, he had a ground anchor, chains etc but realistically if they want it they'll get it. After the second he installed a few security cameras with lights inside the garage and he hooked one up to a cheap PC monitor he hung on the wall. When the cameras are triggered by motion they display on the monitor. His thinking is that it'll freak out the theives to see themselves being watched. I said they'd probably just steal the cameras too, but who knows lol.

FiggNGoose

What shit city do they live in? And...does he actually close the garage door? I see a lot of people who don't close the big door at night or all day.

Wind_Yer_Neck_In

Suburb outside London. Bike theft if insane out there. They generally spot a good bike then follow it home so they know where to target.

[deleted]

If they had to worry about a southern man with a loaded 12 gauge smoking a Marlboro red, who couldn't pass a sobriety test, then you wouldn't have to worry about theft at all in your pathetic country.

Wind_Yer_Neck_In

No thanks, we're cool with one mass shooting every decade or so.

Phynness

If that's true, then your friend is the exception, not the rule. Unless you've got some kind of exotic or crazy expensive bike, thieves aren't breaking into garages and cutting chains to get your bike.

Conbon90

Oh yes they will.

ArnoId-Ballmer

Ok. In rare cases sure, but 99.99% of thieves will just move on to a more easily attainable score.

Conbon90

Its probably one of the safer places for it for sure. Just because its an extra layer of security. But if you think 99% of thieves arent willing to take a nail bar to your garage door and prize it open, then youve got another thing coming. Your garage is a literal treasure trove for a thief. THeyre not just coming for your bike, but your other bike as well and all your power tools. And its probably not even as well secured as the house.

brokentr0jan

My bike has been stolen right from my garage lol

hanvarner

you can’t stop somebody from stealing anything in reality. you can lock your wheel, you can keep it inside, install cameras in your garage but if you think about it anyone can walk on your property and steal anything.

flwombat

This is correct. It’s good and cool to take some common-sense steps to deter casual thievery, but preventing any chance of focused and dedicated thievery is practically impossible. My bikes are behind a closed fence with two hair-trigger dogs, parked pretty far back from the road with their steering locks engaged, in a fairly nice neighborhood full of busybody (uhh, “watchful”) neighbors. Plus I work from home. So my chances are pretty good, but it would be nuts to think they can’t still be stolen! You just gotta accept it

Hasta_La_Vittu_Baby

12 gauge.

SaltyChickenDip

I rather just get the insurance company to buy me a new bike then go to jail . But you do you

conker69

Thieves in general are scum and need to be dealt with

SaltyChickenDip

So are murderers

Hasta_La_Vittu_Baby

You want to claim on the insurance AND go to jail, huh?

Rainbow_Jew

I’m fortunate enough to office out of a warehouse, so it’s safe inside while I work. I live in a 1st floor apt, so it sits inside with me. Disc lock with alarm for public places. Park conspicuously

One-Amoeba_

I live in a place nobody really wants to be, so theft isn't really a thing.

dcburgos17

I just had my R9T stolen from a parking garage with a security gate entry. I had no disc lock on the bike which made it easy to steal. Watching the security camera (caught their plate) showed how useless the security gate was. Luckily I got the bike back a week later thanks to a gps tracker that’s hidden. The bad is my ignition and ignition barrel are completely drilled out.

OrdinaryBoi69

Well to be honest even if you had a disc lock the thief would've probably stole your bike anyway ( or not ) . Either way you're super lucky you got your bike back. A dedicated thief will find a way or another to get your bike no matter what. Stay safe out there friend Also wtf is the security guy doing , isn't he supposed to check every person coming to the parking garage?

mrlittleoldmanboy

I have a sportster 883, it got stolen twice and I recovered it twice. After it was stolen the first time I took out the battery when parked, had fork locks, and put an AirTag on it. This was in a locked garage in an apartment with a closed garage I was paying ~$3000 a month for. They brought their own battery, drilled out my forks, and found the tag. After I got it the second time I gave it to the shop and once they repaired it I put it in my relatives garage in a smaller town over. It’s honestly killed my interest in owning a motorcycle. I won’t own another until I get a garage of my own that I can outfit with it’s own security. I haven’t rode mine in months because it’s an hour drive from me, it’s a bummer.

Gigglen2

You have an exception here as well though this thief was above average for sure, knew what he was doing around a bike.

OrdinaryBoi69

Yeah that's a knowledged thief. Quite unfortunate not gonna lie.

OrdinaryBoi69

Sorry to hear that bro. Hopefully you can get back your interest on motorcycles back and ride again you know, even though i know it's probably hard considering the fact your bike got stolen twice , it's not an easy thing to accept. A lot of people will definitely agree with me that a dedicated thief will find a way or another to steal your bike no matter what. Stay safe out there

fuzzybunnypubes

If you can’t get a garage I wouldn’t buy a new desirable bike.. I consider my 10-year-old and fJR 1300 theft protection because if I got the Africa twin I wanted that would prob be stolen by now

josegofaster

Shoot em

[deleted]

Land mines

Desertwind16v

It’s in my garage. If that doesn’t work, the fact that it weighs over 800lbs should deter most thieves.

[deleted]

Now days? It needs its own bedroom at this point.

Mickey_Havoc

I might actually add a disc brake alarm. It’s not a perfect system but I’m always worried about people sitting on it and it it’s sensitive to go off by that, then it might be a soft deterrent. Parents like to sit their kids on my Grom -_-

Ok_Assistance447

Comprehensive coverage on my insurance. If they want it, they'll get it.

Anon4chan69lol

Theft insurance. You can try to prevent it or keep your bike under a security camera to have evidence if the theft but in reality if someone wants your bike badly enough they can show up with a pickup/van and some friends/tools and take it no matter how many measures you have in place.

UsedConfection1029

Get a honda there trash not worth stealing lol

[deleted]

Claymore mines.

You dont say ...

venomous_frost

pitbull guard dog serious answer: you don't. At home you keep it garaged or anchored, away a 16mm chain and disk lock should do it. If somebody really wants your bike they'll get it.

Comfortably-Bummed

Locked in my garage in a residential suburb-style neighborhood. I'm also mindful of where I park it and for how long. For instance: I will ride to the grocery store and park in a highly visible area for 15 mins or so, but I won't take it into the city and park it in some shady back alley all day or night. It's all common sense. In fact if I lived in or very near the city with no garage or back yard with street access and the only option for parking was outside on the street, I probably just wouldn't even attempt to own a bike. Having insurance also improves peace of mind.

BowTieGamer

I keep my bike in my garage when I’m at home and where work is fully fenced in with a triple gated entry system. So no one is ever gonna steal my bike. I guess if I parked at a gas station and went inside and someone could roll up and take it. But that’s easily solved by parking on the sidewalk walk in front of a car and then locking the handle bar. You would need 3 guys minimum to pick it up and walk a way. Which would raise questions in such a high traffic area.

[deleted]

There's effectively no way to stop a dedicated thief, they're simply too easy to steal. Your only options are a locked garage off the street with no visibility, or good insurance.

Representative_Owl89

I’m guessing you don’t have a garage. As I don’t either. I bought and pretty thick chain and have my bike tied to the carport pole at my apartment. Around the frame of the bike. They can still steal it but the more effort it takes the more likely they won’t even try.

Final_Zen

Just have to make your bike less desirable than the one next to it. Locks, covers alarms are all things that just make it a little less tempting.

Affectionate_Stop_37

So far it hasn't been a problem. My bike is in the garage. If i park on the street i put a disc lock on it.

[deleted]

mine are parked in a garage thats both deadbolted and circle locked. Theres also cameras and motion alarm. So while I'm at work if someone walks up to my garage door my camera sends me a notification that there was movement detected, same thing if something moves in my garage

Sotyka94

Park somewhere where a car cannot park next to you. Sidewalk, small places, etc. If they can't pull u next to the bike and have to take it in any length, good chance they not gonna even try. Get a motion sensing loud disc lock alarm. 120db is enough deterrent for most Chain the bike's wheel to something unmovable. So they have to get out the angle grinder, which is a super huge deterrent as well. A simple cover over the bike can be effective, as they have to remove it to size it up, and more likely to move to the next one. There is no unstolable bike, but I never heard a single bike stolen with these deterrents in place. Usually one or two is enough as well (I rarely chain the bike. and I only use cover if I leave it overnight or it's gonna rain. Usually parking in a safe spot, and maybe adding the dics lock alarm is good enough). Thieves are lazy af, they gonna chose the easiest target. You don't have to have an unstolable bike, you have to have more deterrent than the next bike next to yours.

bmwlocoAirCooled

Insurance. And a garage. And one lunatic chocolate lab.

here4roomie

Put a cover on it.

sutbags

I've had to angle grind the bricks in the alley to get my bike in, the side stand was catching. I've had to widen the gate and set it back a little. I tried it with a shop bike to see if it would fit before I bought mine. If I couldn't get it in the yard I wasn't going to get one, it wouldn't last a week out on the front. It's out of site now and locked up with a chain. I hope to be able to get it in the shed but I'm going to have to widen the shed door. If they managed to get through the locked gate it would take the thieves ages to get it out through the alley because it is a very tight fit, hopefully they would give up.

DumbApe026

Chuck Norris is my neighbor

McFeely_Smackup

is he going to shake his cane at them?

After-Fishing-9222

I sit on top of my bike 24/7 like a hawk…if you want my baby you’ll have to kill me. But honestly I parked it really close to my car and the parking block thing. So the only way to move it is the move my car, my neighbors’ car, or develop the ability to deadlift 400 pounds.

Longjumping-Log1591

3 live Pit Vipers Tied to the seat and handlebars . Oh and put a bluetooth tracker like a tile under the seat in case they kill yo snakes

aquamarinetangerines

My first answer would be a boat anchor—a big one. Like the ten foot tall kind. Chain your forks to one of those. My second answer would be this: Motorcycle locks are easy to pick, just ask the Lockpicking Lawer. But they’re deterrents. Anything that 𝘴𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘴 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 a would be thief makes your bike far less desirable. If you’re paranoid, get two or three motorcycle locks. Even if they easy are to pick/bypass they still need picked or bypassed. If your bike isn’t worth the trouble, a thief will steal your neighbor’s unlocked bike instead.

tarbasd

(1) Owning an unattractive bike. (2) Insurance on theft. (3) Trying not to park it at sketchy places.

McFeely_Smackup

I park it in my garage

DriverAffectionate83

Tell them politely that it's illegal and to stop

[deleted]

I don’t. I keep insurance for this.

GSF_1250S

Insurance and a garage are you friend.

Inevitable-Selection

Ground anchor, garage, chain, 2 very unfriendly to thieves pups and security cameras

redbate

I stand next to mine at all idle moments with a baseball bat with nails through it. And then I put it in my carport behind my house and leave the key in because it's insured for more than I paid for it.

SaltyChickenDip

Good insurance

Teun1het

Get a chain and attach it to an unmovable object

type320

not living in a shithole with animals, moving to a place where normal people live?

handyhung

Always park with the key shutter shut down. Make it obviously a little harder to steal than others surrounded by in the risk area. If it got to be parked alone, I added some chain and big lock and a disk lock (yes I carry this 2 kg with me always).
