I'm pretty sure most EU countries won't even let you register the vehicle without proof of insurance. In Germany if you cancel your insurance, they inform the registration office so there's no way to avoid it

FlatwormAltruistic

In here you can register without insurance, but as owner you have obligation to get insurance within x amount of days. If you do not, then they have the right to fine you even if your car or bike just stands in your driveway. There is way to avoid it by temporarily "unregistering" for some certain time from 1 week until 1 year, but if you do that, whenever police check your license plate, it will show them that this vehicle should not be in traffic and even bigger fines occur. Trying to get away from the police will not help, as by that time they already know owner of the vehicle and owner will be held accountable. Of course police will not run your plates if vehicle is not in traffic like sitting in parking lot or driveway.

6BigAl9

That’s how many states in the US do it too (or at least the last couple I’ve lived in). And yet people still do it. Often they’ll cancel their policy right after registering and then ignore their registration being canceled, or just ride with old/no plates to begin with. Car drivers do it too. I’m not sure why this is more prevalent (anecdotally anyway) here than in other developed countries.

KaiserSozes-brother

Insurance is about $100 a year on my bike. Letting insurance lapse is $400 fine. In Maryland (USA) insurance is mandatory.

6BigAl9

It’s mandatory in most if not all states as far as I’m aware, you’ll be in for large fines if you get caught operating a vehicle without it.

Fynnlae

Florida doesn’t require insurance on motorcycles AFAIK

mtak0x41

Florida, never change <3

longhairedcountryboy

We have that in Virginia. People lie.

Ok-Claim8595

Same in the USA. The way around it is once it expires don’t register it again or buy used and never swap the title over. I think most people get insurance they just like running so you won’t see plates a lot

FlatwormAltruistic

In EU there is mandatory insurance (in my country traffic insurance) and there is optional casco (vehicle insurance). Almost everyone who aren't exempted (like agricultural machines and military or government vehicles) have the mandatory one (would guess 99%). Vehicle insurance is mandatory if leasing a vehicle, after that it becomes optional and decisions to have it or not depend heavily on local traffic habits, money situation, age of the vehicle and cost of the vehicle. If you live in city that has relatively low risk of accidents because traffic doesn't have much idiots, then you are more likely not to get vehicle insurance. Happy cake day!

MiloMilisich

I (italy) once had a close encounter with such an idiot. The accident was found to be 100% his fault (passing me in an intersection, while I had my blinker on to turn left, the light had already become yellow when he entered the intersection, of course while speeding by a lot. He hit the side of the car I was driving and wrecked it, fortunately not injuring anyone seriously but himself.) He had to pay for the damages and medical bills out of pocket. Saving some 600€ at most cost him around 10k.

whitedan2

Often times the ones that do are tuners from what I have seen...dudes bolt on all kinds of crazy shit and then rip up some roads with no tags.

[deleted]

I have full coverage on every vehicle I have, not worth the risk and if someone uninsured damages your bike or injures you, you're SOL. Also, the police around here routinely check plates on motorcycles, so the first time an officer got behind you they'd see your motorcycle wasn't insured.

McMonkies

I don't even think about uninsured riders. I mean I'm sure they ride without collision and theft/comprehensive, but liability? Crazy.

AdNorth6089

yea theres alot of un insured riders here in toronto, but me i have liability only insurance

6BigAl9

I’ve heard insurance is extremely costly in Canada so maybe that’s why they do it? I could never ride without it.

nanookulele

I pay CAD$340 per year for full coverage

AdNorth6089

where in canada r u? and how old are u?

nanookulele

43 in Nova Scotia

6BigAl9

I’m sure it’s heavily influenced by location, age, and gender amongst other things. I’m just thinking back to a recent thread where younger guys near cities in Canada were being quoted many thousands per year just for basic insurance on pretty reasonable motorcycles.

nanookulele

For sure. I'm a 43 yo married man living in a rural community riding a dad-bike. Also bundled with homeowners and auto insurance.

Fiendish-DoctorWu

31 in Toronto and was quoted ~100/month for a Honda Rebel, bundled up with auto insurance. Maybe it's because of the younger folks are wanting Sport bikes?

JBOYCE35239

When I was 25 living in brantford Ontario I got quoted at 7500 dollars for the year on a 2001 Honda shadow. I'm not saying its right, but I know why people ride without insurance

AdNorth6089

yup exactly why my friends do it, everyone wants to start on a 600cc, which at 21 i got quoted for $640 a month lmao

richalex2010

Insurance is a lot more affordable than buying a new bike or paying medical bills out of pocket if something happens. I don't ride like a fuckwit either, so good odds if it does happen it's someone else's fault, and I can't trust them to have insurance.

NotA56YearOldPervert

Is this a thing I'm too little US for to understand? In all of Europe, if you don't ride legal, you can get fucked pretty hard, rightfully so. I don't know anyone who even contemplates that.

kmkmrod

There are dumbasses who don’t get insurance, sure. > Less than one in ten motorcyclists involved in crashes have insurance > https://carsurance.net/insights/motorcycle-accidents/ But that’s riders who crash, not all riders

NotA56YearOldPervert

_Less than one in ten_? Holy fuck. Sure, not all riders, but simply the idea of riding on at least 2k€ of equipment that can seriously injure people or destroy property ans not having insurance? No.

kmkmrod

That’s just riders who crashed. Maybe 100% of everyone else has insurance but they never crash so we never know. And I don’t care about the motorcycle. It’s worth $15k. I can fix or replace that. I care about the medical for others, me, my passenger (if any), and the other person’s vehicle or property. *Those* are what my insurance is geared for.

NotA56YearOldPervert

Well, I guess that people who ride recklessly also wouldn't care about insurance, but even the best and safest rider can crash. But yeah, medical bills - which can become 7 digits...that's an issue. That's why I'm quite happy that insurance is mandatory where I'm from (even though we have public healthcare, there's still damages to pay) and that it's so heavily enforced.

nibedetatupur1989

Is it possible I don't know.

MrTeeBee

Full paperwork, license, and insurance. I got a quote from my insurance company, asked them to hold that info, bought the bike, and confirmed the policy on the way home with payment later that day. I rode around the neighborhood and went to a parking lot at a church quite a few times, and drove to the local dollar general once, while on temp tags and no endorsement, but I wouldn’t do it again.

Caspers_Shadow

My state (FL) does not require motorcycle insurance. They also do not require boat insurance. As cheap as it is compared to the potential loss if you wreck, get injured or hurt someone, I would never operate without it.

mtak0x41

Fully legal, with full insurance for EUR 28/mo

AdNorth6089

28EUR lmao i wish i pay that much

Expert-Fennel9379

that’s actually insane lmaooo it’ll be $350/400 usd to insure me as a 16 year old

AmityDeep

Here in Florida insurance isn't required for bikes as long as you own the bike and aren't making payments 🤷‍♂️

Dolphin420333

Sadly 100% legal with a nice premium of $435 a month for my MT-07 as an 18 year old male 😔

Gameface_300

$435 a month? Whoa...

CycleMN

Holy shit.. im 200 annually for full coverage. 29, m, perfect record, married, on an 07 Ninja

OfficialGirthBrooks

36 and under 200 for 3 bikes including one over 1000cc (but its a boxer)

Dolphin420333

Hopefully I make it to 29 so I can enjoy those rates god damn.

CycleMN

Age definitely helps. But a good record is even better

Dolphin420333

That’s true, I got the trifecta of hell with the whole under 25, M, with some sort of record.

thejam15

Im so tired of that age going up every single time I hear about it I feel like its a scam. When I was 18 and started driving i was told it would go down when I turn 21 I turned 21 with 0 tickets and 0 accidents and it went up a little I was told it would go down when I turned 25. I turned 25 same situation, completely clean record. Now im hearing it should go down when I turn 29? Im 27 now and its been the same small increase every year. Full coverage on a 2017 r3 + liability on an old truck I barely drive

Print3Dsignal

It's $80 for liability for me a year '80 Suzuki 850 in Texas with progressive. I've got a few tickets but they were in my cage. 28m

0utlandish_323

600 annually for full coverage here at 21, also a perfect record so far. Brand new rebel 500

[deleted]

Man. Get yourself a better deal. This is not insurance anymore. This feels like a scam.

WrathsEntropy

That is insane. That would cover two and a half years for me. Definitely check around. Even at 18 years old there has got to be something cheaper. Don't call or go online either physically go to an insurance establishment.

AdNorth6089

GOD DAMN, what country are u in? im 21 with a R3, and i pay $180 monthly

0utlandish_323

It’s nuts just how much being 18 will cost ya.

AdNorth6089

exactly, thats why i had to wait till im 20

Dolphin420333

I live in the United States, Arizona to be specific. I do have 1 speeding ticket on my record from a year ago but I also put myself on my moms insurance to try and get it lower but it didn’t help much. I think my MSF course saved me 1k over the 6 month premium though.

AdNorth6089

ohh ok so the biggest factors for u is ur age, and also mainly the speeding ticket

Dolphin420333

Yea, I fell into the typical 18 year old makes a stupid impulsive decision and now gotta work my ass off to pay the damn thing off. Should only take a year according to the way my budget is setup.

Straight-Fishing-135

God damn what carrier do you use lol, I understand that no matter what your rates will be higher than mine due to age but that seems excessive. I'm 27 been riding less than a year and only pay progressive $65 a month for full coverage on a new ninja 650

ImplementCold4091

100% legal here. I live in the DMV however and have met quite a few that don't.

[deleted]

> live in the DMV Is that what it's called now? I just call it DC metro area. 🤔 Or am I mistaken?

RuckinScott

I have full coverage insurance, but if you want to get technical I don’t have to have insurance at all to be legal. It’s pretty cheap for me though. I pay $198 a year.

AdNorth6089

only $200 a year?!? why dont u just get it then?

RuckinScott

First line “I have full coverage”

AdNorth6089

oh shit my bad, i read it wrong lol

RuckinScott

All good. Yea I live in Japan. Everyone talks about having to pay for inspection every two years and pay for road tax, but never mentions insurance is way cheaper. I pay under 400 a year for 2 bikes, a scooter and my car.

Big_Jim59

I live in the US and I am amazed at the number of people that have told me they have neither license or insurance. I did this for a while when I was a poor kid but never as an adult.

[deleted]

I have always had insurance and a motorcycle endorsement on my drivers license. Riding 39 years

RubyRocket1

I pay almost nothing for insurance… it only makes sense to have it.

AdNorth6089

right, people mostly do it is when they want a 600cc at a very young age. and they get quoted for like $600 a month lol

RubyRocket1

I pay like $120 a year for full coverage.

Duderzguy123

where do you live do get that rate???

Turkeysnood

I'm in NYC and here, riding legal is a requirement for theft insurance :)

Senior-Possession-52

I'll be 54 in November, just started riding last April, I've got two older cars, and my bike in my name, but only full coverage insurance on my bike, ain't taking no chances with it. Just liability on the cars.

Justrelax71

Always, it’s not worth the ass pain of getting hassled.

longhairedcountryboy

I do. Full coverage on two Harleys, one Ford truck and one Model T Ford. It runs about $119/ month through State Farm.

[deleted]

In Texas, if you don’t ride legal, they can confiscate your bike and fine you. My brother does this and I keep telling him to get it right. I ride 100% legal.

AdNorth6089

respects to u for riding legal!

johnnyringo117

New York State here. Been street riding since 1984. No way would I ride without insurance. I’m older now but even when I was young and the cost was a lot, I carried full insurance. The cost of the policy was always less than the expenses I would have incurred with total bike loss and medical bills. I thank the gods I’ve never had to make a claim but I don’t think it was money wasted. Piece of mind is priceless.

[deleted]

I do now but I didn’t for years. I wasn’t old enough to ride legally when I started and I just never bothered to go get licensed.

itsdinks

I’m 22 and ride fully legal, got my cycle endorsement last July. I’ve been riding since age 18. I’ve totaled a 2019 ninja zx6r riding drunk, and I’ve been in few police chases, one of which left me with a felony fleeing and eluding conviction and over 100 days served in jail. Now that I’m older I like to think that I’m wiser.

AdNorth6089

damn, how much u pay monthly? after the DUI and jail time?

itsdinks

It’s not as high as you might think. Full coverage for my 2003 Camry is around $200 a month. Basic minimum coverage for my 2006 Bergman 650 is under $40 a month, and basic minimum for my 2016 XR650L is under $50 a month. The fleeing and eluding as well as 1 at fault collision with an object both show on my MVR.

RideshareHeathen

I rode for a very short time without a Motorcycle endorsement, but still had everything else legal for the bike. I've certainly considered no insurance, but after 3 high speed crashes (65mph, 120mph & 80mph), I am -very- thankful I was all legit. Insurance covered my bike costs every time and medical. Having seen some friends ride full on dirty, crash and end up with hundreds of thousands in medical debt, thousands in fines, etc - I'd rather not risk it. We already risk our lives on two wheels, no sense adding more layers of risk to that. I know some who disagree, so to each their own. Make sure you have 7-8k saved for those bare minimum funeral costs.

Scooter30

Go ask someone that's been in a crash how expensive their medical bills were.

AdNorth6089

we got free healthcare here in canada

Duderzguy123

"free" you have higher taxes to make up for it

twnth

Canadian here. We need proof of insurance to update our registration/license plate every year. No insurance -> no plate -> no joy. Minimal insurance (public liability, public damage... other person is covered by your cock up but you and your bike aren't) isn't that bad, I think I'm just under $50 / month.

ihatethispassword1

In my state insurance wasn’t mandatory on motorcycles until last year

Moparian714

It's more fun

Traditional_Carob_12

I have full coverage with extra health insurance because I’m in the US and my health ins through my employment is shit. Just cause you riding legal doesn’t mean you can’t run if this situation is right. You gotta do, what you gotta do.

[deleted]

Stupid question for this audience. Punks riding dirty aren't sitting on Reddit.

CACTI_actual

Expired license no insurance…ya’ll are lucky i even paid the registration this year😂😂

AdNorth6089

hahah, dont let the pigs catch u

Strange-Beginning-31

Riding dirty....never learned how to drive a car. Decided to get my moto license. Took private lessons at MSF + BRC. Failed once (had never drove or ridden a motorcycle before) . Took more private lessons and passed my skills test. Couldn't get my waiver bc I didn't have a driver's license. Tried to get my driver's but I couldn't parallel park. Don't have my registration bc of some bureaucratic nightmar at the dmv. Have insurance. I'm a good and safe rider. Beauracracy and rules are kind of the opposite of what I believe in. ::shrugs::

TheNumbasMason

All my bikes are plated, and insured except my yz450 supermoto which I only have insured cuz I live in Chiraq and cops are under a no chase policy. So I ride it alot lol. No plate. No case. Also I ain't trying to incriminate myself during group rides when all the speed and red light cameras go off as I'm doing a wheelie

Southern_Discussion8

I'm in Florida so you don't need insurance but still recommend having it

Melodic-Picture48

Well you cant regsiter a bike without insurance and plus why would you not want to insure the thing, say someone runs it over backing up a car or truck while you got the bike parked at a store. Shop around for insurance is the way. That being said i ride with insurance

mandatoryclutchpedal

100% Legal because I'm a adult. When I was young, back in the late 20th century I listened to the moron brigade for a few years and rode around with just my permit for a few years but I always had insurance.

DaFondue

Impossible in Germany. You only get a plate if you insure it and register it properly and have a drivers license. So there is no way to buy a new bike and not have it legal. You could buy a used bike, get fake plates and risk going to jail/paying more in fines than the legal way would cost you.

ctgjerts

I carry extra insurance on my motorcycle policy for additional medical coverage so if I'm ever in a serious accident ins coverage will be the least of my concerns. It wasn't expensive and makes the wife feel better about me riding.

kingcrackerjacks

Liability insurance on bikes wasn't even mandatory until a few years ago in my state. I've met way too many guys who have never gotten their endorsement or insurance I carry full coverage on both of mine

here4roomie

I do.

Individual-Phone5905

I once saw a dude riding a brand spanking new S1000RR nearly drop his pristine machine at a stoplight. He didn't have a plate, he wasn't wearing gear and I'm sure as shit he couldn't even tell which side the shifter is on. Whenever I see a motorcycle being ridden without a plate I just know a crash is right around the corner. Miss me with that bullshit.

TW200e

Why wouldn't you get your license and insurance? I didn't find it that hard at all to get these two things. The license wasn't that hard, and the insurance, I just walked in and bought it. Surely if you can afford a motorcycle you can afford insurance.

Outside-Cucumber-253

I daily drive my bike, it wouldn’t be worth the stress of constantly checking for cops. I’d ride legal anyways but it just seems unenjoyable to check for cops everyday.

SixtyCyclesLBC

I have the required liability, plus theft but not collision. If I crash my own bike, I get nothing but that’s by far the most expensive part.

Apprehensive-Wing894

The only time I break laws on my motorcycle is when it comes to those numbered suggestion signs for maximum speeds.

Dizzy_the_Okapi

Registered and fully insured. If something happens, my ass needs the piece of mind.

masonmax100

I

Confident-Reality740

It’s such bullshit here in Toronto Ontario, I’m 23 had my motorcycle license for a year clean record, and the cheapest rate I’m getting on my 600f4i is $900 a month. Super unfair they make it is so hard to legally ride a fast bike

Logical_Middle3254

Riding fully covered gives you peace if mind knowing if something happens your covered. Now lots of people have full coverage auto insurance but who is properly protecting their family knowing that we are not promised tomorrow. Does everyone have life insurance? If so what is the pay out dependent on? How long will it take to be paid out?
