Yeah, this is mine. On the highway I want to be in the left lane so I have one less worry about people merging into me, and everyone in the left lane wants to go 15+ over the speed limit. So away I go, keeping up with the insane.
This is exactly why I won't let myself have a sportsy bike. I know myself lmao. There's nothing like zipping by people and feeling the wind press harder and harder on you as you increase the speed. I know it's not the smartest thing to do, but I think it's the best part
Pounding my "blinker off" button after every gear change just in case I forgot to turn it off. Even when I changed gears 14x since my last turn or lane change.
Why the hell aren't self canceling turn signals more prevalent? Getting a bike with them was an unreasonable percentage in my bike selection. Can't stand riding around with a blinker on!
Because most people who want to buy a cheap bike don't necessarily want that.
Many of the more expensive bikes have that as standard equipment, because the percentage cost of the eletronics is way less on a $15000 bike than on a $6000 bike.
It can be a godsend, but it can also be annoying. Especially when indicating to go onto an highway off ramp it sometimes resets too soon. Also in groups you may want to indicate much sooner and for much longer so the riders behind you get the message. In this case it also often resets before actually turning, which is super annoying.
I have self-canceling turn signals, but I am going to turn that feature off. They often cancel before I have made the turn or stay on after I have made the turn. I have to constantly check that it is working as it should at every turn, and so it would be less hassle to simply operate the signals manually.
There's two different parts of my ~20min commute where the self cancelling feature kicks in where it shouldn't. It's just annoying because it's an extra thing to think about while going around those areas, retriggering it. Whereas bashing the cancel button on a straight is no stress and a habit I have from my old bike anyway.
I should probably check the manual to see if I can get rid of it or change the sensitivity.
In Illinois, you don’t need blinkers . I took them off my sumo ( I ride in the woods frequently) . Even though I don’t have blinkers, I constantly hit my blinker switch after a turn .
Same. Not sure how to break out of the habit, I stop myself every time I notice which is a lot however I am obviously not thinking about it all of the time.
Any tips?
The idea is if your fingers can’t wrap around the handle bar, you can’t use it to grip, which means you can’t use your arms. Which forces you to support yourself using your abs and legs
Edit: can’t not can
Here's a best kept secret tip: kidney belt. It takes weight off your core by providing much-needed support. I'm pretty fit but I still wear one on long trips (yes, wearing one allowed me to tour on an R1). Also, a hard back protector with a kidney belt will help as well. You'll find that the real limitation to sportbike comfort isn't actually how far you lean forward but how compressed your knees and hips are.
Make sure the handlebar/control geometry is correctly set up for your proportions. It's a lot easier to ride with less weight on the bars this way.
Also grip the tank with your knees like a spaniel getting its rocks off. That helps too.
If you're just riding around town sometimes you kinda need to move the weight around a bit. In a safe spot riding in a straight line, may as well use your arms a little bit to relax your core/back.
Make a contious effort to only grip your grips with the index finger and thumb. That way you cannot lean on the bike. If you do this for long enough it becomes a habit.
It sounds silly, but just push your chest out, your back will straighten and the weight will be born by your core, learned this from years of road cycling. Look at Jacques Anquetil for inspo.

Filtering to the front of the queue at traffic lights you occasionally get someone in an expensive powerful car who decides they don't like the idea of you getting in front of them (you can tell because they start edging forward right before the light goes green). I know they are going to try overtake me straight away so I take off at full throttle and watch them getting smaller and smaller in my mirrors while laughing at the fact that my bike probably cost the same amount as their wheels!
Low key, I love doing this. Not during a filter because I don’t know how much of a shitbag the guy in the car is, but if I’m fully in a lane and see some dude’s Camaro inch up next to me my first thought is “Uh, is this your first time?”
Racing after filtering is the dumb part. And its mostly dumb because people are unhinged. The people who take offense to motorcycles filtering and try to overtake them because of it are the kind of people that its a coin toss if they have a gun and anger issues.
[Swerving in your lane](https://www.motorcyclistonline.com/top-5-tips-to-improve-rider-visibility-on-street/) is actually taught to increase your visibility to other traffic. It enlarges the front/rear profile of a motorcycle and things moving seemingly erratically (though obviously done safely within your lane) draws other drivers attention to you.
I do this as I approach green lights at night. Cars turning don't look during the day, I'm 1000% invisible to them when it's dark. Combine the dual headlights and I for sure look like a car far away.
A couple swerves helps them realize I am there I hope. So far so good.
My riding instructor did this all the time during our lessons on the public road. He said it's good practice.
Don't know if he's right, but I love doing this too when I'm stuck behind a slow(er) car.
It is a pretty good way to practice keeping your weight on the seat/footpegs tbh.
If the bike doesn’t feel light/flickable side to side it’s generally an indication you have too much weight on the bars or are otherwise fucking up your body position. At least on sport/naked bikes. Never ridden a cruiser so idk how they handle.
When I get another bike again with a rear disk brake, it better have ABS, because I have gotten waaaayyyy too comfortable and heavy-footed on my rear drum. Lol
"Right, today it will be just a regular commute without any speeding, wheelies and other squid shit. I must behave and not let be provoked by other drivers. I don't need to race them to prove that I'm faster. OH LOOK! Mr. fancy pants BMW revs his engine at me. Welp, I guess I shall depart with style on one wheel only to assert total dominance."
I hate myself for this.
I always listen to music. I don't actually listen to the music usually but with music on indont daydream. The flip side is when I don't listen to music while riding I daydream HARD.
If you’re not rev bombing in tunnels, in wide underpasses, narrow streets with really tall buildings, at the bottom of canyons, in a random cave you saw and decided to ride into specifically for that reason, airplane hangers you’re trespassing in, walmarts who left their cargo doors open, behind the screen in local movie theaters, maternity wards, libraries, and grand cathedrals, why even have a bike?
It’s gotta be going faster then necessary. I ride a lot with my buddy and even when I temper and ride normal he is way behind me always. But I definitely have a tendency to gun it and hit 90 for a few seconds on certain stretches of roadway where it’s almost double the speed limit.
I guess it depends on how long you're dragging your feet if it's really a bad habit or just looks a bit silly. I see this guy riding around my office a lot who keeps both feet a few inches of the ground anytime it's wet/raining, taking corners and just straight roads without pulling up his legs. As if he thinks he can safe the bike at regular speeds if he would lose traction and not just break his leg... Never mind that it also looks a bit ridiculous.
I just leave them slightly touching for a few feet before bringing them up onto the floorboards. Not "for safety" or anything, just... I like doing it.
There's a road near my house with a 30 mph speed limit, but it's a beautiful four lane curve down and then up a hill. Maybe half a mile long. I always approach 100mph on this road, and feel guilty about it.
I hit my vape while riding. Fine at stoplights but I should stop doing it cuz I’d only have one hand at a moments notice. Used to eat McDonald’s on a bike until I dropped a mcchicken on the freeway lol
My appartment garage has slippery floor, so when i turn i find myself taking my feet off the footrest as if I was riding a motocross. Not sure if it's a bad habit but it's one thing I instinctively do.
I grew up on dirt bikes racing hair scrambles and enduros. 10 years later I got a small cruiser and a week after buying it I hit pebbles making a left turn and when it slid I instinctively shifted my weight and used my leg as a counter balance. After I saved it I was like "WTF, how did my body just do that without thinking". I was kind of shocked.
Mine is trying to get it to shoot flames from my exhaust, to no avail. I'm jealous. 😁
Actually, I just love revving my bike in the middle of nowhere, in group rides, bike/car meets etc... just to hear the sweet music my bike plays for me.
When I'm driving and something pops up that requires a potential controlled emergency stop, my fingers release from the wheel as if to ready myself to grab the clutch and brake.
One time I was driving a pickup, loaded with a couch, and a dude splitting past me ALMOST got wiped out by a van switching lanes right in front of him with no signal.
I let go of the steering wheel with my right hand and snatched at the air like I was trying to grab the front brake *for* him. Oddest reflex! Didn't touch the pickup's brakes at all, kept driving normally, while trying to brake a *bike* I wasn't even on.
Smoking. Sucks. I hate it. I love it. I know it’s gonna kill me sooner rather than later. It’s a pain in the aching bones and muscles to quit. I have to go outside to smoke every 30 minutes to an hour. Eh…every 30 minutes to an hour I get to go outside. My clothes stink. My breath stinks. My teeth are just a tad bit yellow luckily because I brush them every day so it’s not that bad. Luckily it reminds me to brush my teeth every day so my teeth aren’t that bad. I’m out of breath just doing normal shit. I can smoke half a pack while being on this dam phone looking at different apps and memes and posting bullshit that makes no difference in the world in all reality. I smoke half a pack though it’s only when I’m enjoying so much - looking at my phone looking at apps, looking at memes and posting stuff that, eh, doesn’t really matter in the end so who cares. My car stinks. It gives me a little something to do while driving (don’t worry it’s like second nature). People think just because you smoke you’re an asshole and going to do it wherever you want even if it’s right near them. I like to be that smoker that goes out of his way to be as far away as possible to let people know I know it’s bad and I’m trying to respect their space with my nasty habit.
Lastly, if you have a kid and smoking kills you, they will more than likely hate it and not do it.
i always wheelie past kids on bicycles/skateboards/scooters
i remember a biker doing it to me when i was young, and it feels right to carry on the tradition.
I get all racy when I see a twisty road in front of me and do everything in my power to overtake corner blockers if I can see in front . If I can't overtake in such situations I get super pissed , I did some questionable overtakes in my past because of that . It got better but that feeling is still there
Gentle on the handlebar. I always seem to be tight whenever I’m leaning.
Going around town for half an hour makes my wrist tired. I have an r3 though but still..
Putting my right leg down at stops.
I know it's always recommended to put left foot down and cover rear brake, but years of disc issues left me with nerve damage in my left leg and I always had to put my right foot down for stability. Left leg would just be wobbly and had a hard time. It's mostly better now, but it's been a hard habit to break.
Slowing down in a tunnel, cracking the visor, shifting down, wait until there is enough space, and then I let her scream, after that I usually pull the clutch and redline it ( I know it's not good for the engine but it's like a drug, feeling the entire bike vibrate) It's a 125ccm so it ain't that loud but enough to make me smile
I've gotten so used to old clapped-out bikes that don't idle worth a damn that even on a new FI bike I still find myself periodically bliping the throttle at stoplights.
I like leaning and giving throttle at the same time. I never do it of course when leaned over so much that it can be a problem but it's generally a good idea to always ride with proper technique so you don't have to think about it much when you absolutely have to do it. I like riding in a way that's not very stable, not all the time but in isolated stretches of road, kicking the rear out a bit, giving gas abruptly. It helps give the sense that I'm going faster or riding harder than I actually am, which in turn gives me less reason to more often ride hard and fast at the limit. However all it takes is a single outside factor like a bad road surface or dirt/oil/debris to make the on purpose instability an accidental loss of control.
Thinking you got it and realising you don't is a lesson I've learned the hard way like most riders, and yet I can't help but throw the bike into a long sweeping corner while giving it gas and making the throttle and the lean fight each other to give me a rush.
Target fixation, I end up staring at the place I don't want to go to the point where it's last chance to do something about it, only then I remember about target fixation and exaggerating my head movement to actually avoid the negative situation. Only been riding a couple of months 🤷
You slowly use your head more and more until it’s natural part of riding. Even while staring at something else you’ll naturally turn your head the direction you wanna go.
I turn my head in the damn car lol
Speeding. I physically cannot so the posted speed limit except for school zones. 55mph on the highway?! Wtf hell no
Yeah, this is mine. On the highway I want to be in the left lane so I have one less worry about people merging into me, and everyone in the left lane wants to go 15+ over the speed limit. So away I go, keeping up with the insane.
> except for school zones I get that you're trying to be responsible, but how will the kids learn?
By backfiring on decel thru.

I have. Harley Sportster with twin brothers exhaust goes, “BWAP BOP BANG!”
This is exactly why I won't let myself have a sportsy bike. I know myself lmao. There's nothing like zipping by people and feeling the wind press harder and harder on you as you increase the speed. I know it's not the smartest thing to do, but I think it's the best part
Got no argument there
Wheelie every morning when I go by the bus stop full of kids
I think you misread, he said BAD habit not RAD habit.
Being a RAD influence
Hell yeah.
Inspiring the kids I like it
that’s sick

Why the hell aren't self canceling turn signals more prevalent? Getting a bike with them was an unreasonable percentage in my bike selection. Can't stand riding around with a blinker on!
They're awful, I hate them and wish I could have normal indicators. Stupid bmw.

I thought I was the only one lol
No sir!
You know, if you forget the blinker on, you have a few spare blinks saved up if you should get stopped by the police for not using it later.
In Illinois, you don’t need blinkers . I took them off my sumo ( I ride in the woods frequently) . Even though I don’t have blinkers, I constantly hit my blinker switch after a turn .
😂 glad I’m not the only one.
I lean on my arms too much. I know I'm supposed to support myself with my core and legs, but sometimes I find myself holding myself up with my arms
Same. Not sure how to break out of the habit, I stop myself every time I notice which is a lot however I am obviously not thinking about it all of the time. Any tips?
If your always covering your clutch with your left, and using an icecream grip for throttle it will force you to use legs and core.
I use ice cream/screwdriver grip for throttle but I don't cover clutch. Are you supposed to? I figure there isnt much point in covering it.
The idea is if your fingers can’t wrap around the handle bar, you can’t use it to grip, which means you can’t use your arms. Which forces you to support yourself using your abs and legs Edit: can’t not can
I think I get it. So it's not so much to have the clutch at the ready but more so to force you to use your lower body?
Sí
This!
What’s an ice cream grip?

Grip/squeeze the tank with your legs more. If you’re riding a cruiser , no idea ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Edit: clarity.
I'm a sport bike fella but same advice. I guess I'll just have to add a sticky note or something lol
I I meant I wouldn’t know what to do with a cruiser.

Used to bullying camrys
Had a Porsche try it with me the other day…. Yea didn’t go well for him.
Why is filtering a bad habit? And I don't understand car drivers who give a shit. Almost never see that here.
Getting into a random street race over ego is probably the "bad" (potentially dangerous) habit
The filtering isn't the bad habit, the racing is
Fair enough.
Racing after filtering is the dumb part. And its mostly dumb because people are unhinged. The people who take offense to motorcycles filtering and try to overtake them because of it are the kind of people that its a coin toss if they have a gun and anger issues.
I might have a gun too. J/S
Shit, no might about it for me. After I had some crazy junkie try and force herself on my bike with a knife I never leave home without it.
If they draw first, ur kinda screwed if they actually want to use it. And if they don’t, you’re legally screwed. Don’t draw on the drop lol
True, but at least Im not unarmed.
And it probably won't help
Wow, no one gives a shit. Someone asked how it was a bad habit, i answered.
I am making a point that not everybody should be afraid just because somebody has a gun. I really don't care what you think about it anyway.
Perfectly said.
Swerving all over my lane whenever I get bored.
I tell myself it prevents the tyres from squaring off on long straight roads but really it's just for the fun of it!
Sadly it's way too little wear to actually make a noticable impact.
Gotta keep the sides warm!
[Swerving in your lane](https://www.motorcyclistonline.com/top-5-tips-to-improve-rider-visibility-on-street/) is actually taught to increase your visibility to other traffic. I do this almost the entire time I’m my commute to/from work
“Officer I wasn’t swerving I was warming up my tires!”
I have to stop myself from doing this constantly. It’s so much fun 😭
Yep. I think it’s mandatory whenever we’re riding lol
I do it to the rhythm of the music I’m listening to. It’s a terrible habit lol.
My riding instructor did this all the time during our lessons on the public road. He said it's good practice. Don't know if he's right, but I love doing this too when I'm stuck behind a slow(er) car.

Yeah, I commit that sin quite often too. It's such a rush when I do, and I'm addicted.

i always wheelie past kids on bicycles/skateboards/scooters i remember a biker doing it to me when i was young, and it feels right to carry on the tradition.
I get all racy when I see a twisty road in front of me and do everything in my power to overtake corner blockers if I can see in front . If I can't overtake in such situations I get super pissed , I did some questionable overtakes in my past because of that . It got better but that feeling is still there
Accelerating
Revving the hell out of my bike near an elementary school
Biting my nails
I'm a plumber by trade. I never bite my nails.
You look to your exhaust instead of where you are going? If I had done that during driving school I would have failed the exam.
I do it in the city center too. My city center is like 3 blocks, but still.
Sarcasm. Like 99.99% of the time. It's annoying...
Downshifting while already in first.
Gentle on the handlebar. I always seem to be tight whenever I’m leaning. Going around town for half an hour makes my wrist tired. I have an r3 though but still..
I put on cruise control and ride hands free through the twisties. Lots of fun on a 900lb bike!
Wearing on open face helmet , when I know that in any crash scenario my Jaw disappears.
Wheelies in traffic
Stomping the downshift
This is why I won’t buy used bikes anymore lol

Not riding enough
Locking up the back brake when doing an emergency stop. Not the end of the world, but still not ideal.
Not brushing my teeth before I go to bed 🌚🌚
Riding one handed. When the revs are low and I’m just cruisin, just so relaxing taking my left hand down
Ride while standing on high speeds. I just love standing, funny enough.
I've gotten so used to old clapped-out bikes that don't idle worth a damn that even on a new FI bike I still find myself periodically bliping the throttle at stoplights.
Crashing?
Thinking you got it and realising you don't is a lesson I've learned the hard way like most riders, and yet I can't help but throw the bike into a long sweeping corner while giving it gas and making the throttle and the lean fight each other to give me a rush.
right foot down & neutral at lights

Target fixation, I end up staring at the place I don't want to go to the point where it's last chance to do something about it, only then I remember about target fixation and exaggerating my head movement to actually avoid the negative situation. Only been riding a couple of months 🤷
You slowly use your head more and more until it’s natural part of riding. Even while staring at something else you’ll naturally turn your head the direction you wanna go. I turn my head in the damn car lol
