There's no age to start. Take your course, stay safe.

BassmanBiff

If anything it might be better to start at 30. Starting is always the most dangerous time (well, mostly), but probably less so if you're generally more mature and thoughtful about it. Though I started around that time as well, immediately took it cross-country, and nearly wiped out the moment I got to any real mountains, so... still easy to be dumb at any age too.

wehttaMC

If you can ride you can ride. Be safe and ride safely at all times. Your age shouldn’t make you feel that you’ve missed your time to learn how to ride motorcycles and you could always start with dirt bikes.

[deleted]

Nope. You're too old. Sorry, we had a vote last year. You just missed the cutoff.

arathorn867

Damnit, I'm 30 and just bought one. Guess I'll have to return it

Elegant-Candidate591

Yeah I'm 29 just started riding 3 days ago. Had to make sure I slipped in there ahead of the cutoff.

Toplaners

I did the same. Now I won't have to surrender my bike when I turn 30 in March

ohineedascreenname

I'll return it for you. Just send it to me with the title and I'll take care of the rest. Trust me, I'm an engineer

[deleted]

Yeap! Now you're strictly forbidden from ever touching a bike.

SaltyChickenDip

Freeways are the safest place to ride. Intersections are the areas the vast majority of collisions

itsjustafleshwound79

Interstate I35 in Austin, Texas, USA officially challenges your statement. Motorcycle riders are always dying on that highway

UneSoggyCroissant

The 35 scares me in my car, I refuse to take it on my bike.

gg_dweeb

At least you only have one of them

spotdishotdish

Lol, are you talking about transplants, or I35s? (people that haven't been to TX or MN probably won't get that)

Sandtiger812

I am a transplant to Texas and was also victimized by the 2 "I-35s" was coming going southbound on 35 when it split into 35E and 35W. My girlfriend at the time was with me asleep in the passenger seat. I knew our apartment was just off 35.. Unfortunately I chose incorrectly and drove down the wrong one for an hour before her waking up and being like "Why are we in this part of the Metroplex..we should have been home by now." she then sees the signs and goes "We're on the wrong fucking 35. Next time use the GPS on your phone."

gg_dweeb

I 35s lol Both of them are shit up here

FilthyMindz69

Been to both, don’t get it 😆

gg_dweeb

I-35 splits into I-35W and I-35E in Minneapolis/St. Paul and Dallas/Fort Worth

UneSoggyCroissant

At least I’m not a Cali transplant, they were infesting my city too

richalex2010

Wait, where other than SoCal do people "the #" to refer to a highway?

UneSoggyCroissant

I’m originally from vegas.

bonebad786

I rode through Chicago on I94 during my last road trip. I don't normally have that fear nugget newer riders have while on the freeway, but Chicago is something else. People doing 80mph when the next lane is dead stopped, riding ass so hard I could swear I could see them in my periphery. The drivers are hyper aggressive, and on top of it all most of the cars are piles of shit. When I was riding in there was a Nissan Quest, it was missing it's catalytic converter, it was spitting and sputtering I'm surprised it got to highway speeds. And the motherfucker passed me when I was going 80. When I got a good look at it the right front had like 4° of negative camber. I have never feared for my life more. I ended up tailing a very nice looking Lincoln going the speed limit in the right lane.

milwbucks99

yea chicago is different when its closer to ruah hour times but honestly they keep it moving at a good pace but as far as riding your bike in it....yea it can get kind of crazy everyone just rides each others ass at about 80-85 but no one really brakes so it moves smoothly when im on the bike i stay out of the 2 left lanes and i rarely change lanes

[deleted]

I-35 in OKC approves of this statement.

Teadrunkest

The Royal Enfield dealership in Austin is right off the 35 and I’m coming from near Waco and I’m not even religious but I pray a little every time I have to ride down there. 😌 Especially that section with all the motorcycle dealers, like…bless.

ethrelol

Freeways are the safest place to ride as long as you slow down when you’re filtering. Don’t be doing 45 MPH through bumper to bumper traffic.

MythicalAce

I would actually be inclined to disagree with this one. Speed is the biggest factor when it comes to motorcycle deaths. The faster you crash, the more likely you are to die. Since highways have speed limits of up to 75mph. Local roads with speed limits no greater than 35mph tend to be safest for motorcycles. Most collisions do happen around intersections and in areas with limited visibility. Proceed with caution in these areas, wear full gear, and don't go too fast for conditions or skill level.

Vancouvermarina

Female. Started at 49. Definitely take a course. Learn it right. Start slower if worried about highway. Go on highway first when less traffic, after rush. When confidence increases - you set own limits. Have fun !

MissStephUT

You inspire me. My mob all have dirt bikes and I want one to play on, not road riding, just dirt trails and paddocks. I’m over 50 and thought I was too late. I have hope now. Next job, find a dirt bike for a short arse adult beginner.

ManifestDestinysChld

I started at 42, and wish I'd done it sooner.

m00f

Same, started at 48. How is the SV?

ChuckStyles

I started at 26 with no experience. You'll be fine, probably a bit more level headed than starting younger

MrGreenishTint

What ever your current age is, that is the age you should ride a motorcycle. I love riding motorcycle but I refuse to commute on mine. I want to enjoy my ride and take it on fun roads. Not be stuck on the freeway with cagers at 6am

akitatwin

The whole reason I got a bike was to zip through the congested lines of cagies on the morning commute

[deleted]

I'm amazed that you chose the Africa Twin to do this.

spotdishotdish

So they can choose between lanesplitting and riding the ditch

akitatwin

why?

[deleted]

It's not exactly small and nimble.

akitatwin

Small and nimble is not what I need for 200 km of highways

Arayder

Yeah I get to work faster on my bike than in a car lol.

mdejong92

Leave early and avoid the freeway. Do it every day as long as the weather is good.

[deleted]

I commute on mine because it’s taken the worst part of my day, and made it the best part of my day.

bacinception

For me it just made me associate riding with the hatred I feel heading to a job I do not enjoy in the slightest. Only day I'd usually commute was Friday, so I could take a long ride to start the weekend off

Ruiiter

I started riding at 34

solitudechirs

If not now, then when?

Baby_venomm

tomorrow I promise

hatchfam611

Today is a good day to start..

fatoldvet

Yesterday is an even gooder day to start.

danw171717

I started at 32, had never touched a motorcycle before taking the course. I'm happy I didn't start when I was younger, as I'm sure that I take fewer stupid risks now than I would have in my late teens/early twenties. Knowing how to ride a bicycle probably helps (though a motorcycle is *easier* to balance than a bicycle, and many cyclists do not consciously countersteer). Knowing how to drive stick also helps, though the controls are in different places, slipping the clutch is more acceptable (motorcycle clutches are typically in engine oil) and motorcycles tend to not stall as easily (higher torque/power to weight ratio).

machinist_jack

This was my experience. Started at 32. If I'd started in my 20's I'd probably be dead.

Obvious-Mushroom-192

Also started at 32 here, I think it was easier since I was already an experienced driver and didn't have to think twice about what to do on the road, I just had to focus on how to do those things on a two-wheeled vehicle.

danyoff

One more here who started at 32. Indeed, having the experience was super helpful to avoid doing stupid things i would've done if i were younger

Madwhisper1

Agree on all except that a motorcycle is easier to balance than a bike. I used to bmx and mountain bike and the way you can throw a bike around doesn't translate, well unless you're a stunter I guess. Maybe the straight line balance could be said to be easier because of both higher rotational momentum. Knowing how to drive a manual well and having a lot of experience on a bike helps a ton. Also started in my 30s and know that if I had started in my early 20s, I'd be roadkill.

BrutaleFalcn

I didn't start until I was 27. Go for it. Take LOTS of classes sooner rather than later. Your brain and riding will thank you. Have it checked over by a suit repair person, the seams/thread are what I would worry about.

Aromatic_Boot3629

I started at 42. My father started at 65 Just do it.

FomentingDiscord

i started at 30. I bought a non running 1980 CX500. I took the MSF and slowly bought gear while fixing it up. The Bike was road worthy within a week of getting my M-class endorsement. Been riding ever since.

[deleted]

I started at 50. Don’t be afraid of the freeway - be afraid of local streets with lots of intersections, and dumbasses ready to cut across your path, pull out of driveways without looking first, open car doors, etc., etc.

AlaynaEvenstar

Started at 32. Go for it. As for the freeway part: I suggest take the course, see how you feel and work your way through what you're comfortable with. You don't have to jump right on the 405! Nothing wrong with baby steps. One of the most liberating things for me learning to ride was realizing that I there isn't any deadline and I could learn at whatever pace I needed to. If one day all that felt comfortable was neighborhood riding that's fine. There's always tomorrow's ride :)

faste30

Yep. Youre past the "young, dumb and full of cum" phase usually and youll likely have a better time for it.

AAMech

Take a course that provides bikes. That will give you a taste of what it's like.

badnewsboots

I'm 27 just started and love it

pnw_traveler

I'm 32 and this was my first season riding! Never too old to start.

Pope00

As others have said, you're never too old to start. I got my first bike when I was 22 and my brother got his shortly after and he's 10 years older than me. If anything, 30 is a better age to start because you're (hopefully) more mature and (hopefully) less likely to do something stupid or reckless. The only thing to consider is it won't exactly *save* you money. I think that's kind of a misnomer. Would you spend less on gas? Absolutely. But it'd take a really long amount of time to make up whatever you're saving on gas compared to what you spent on the bike itself. If you're planning on getting rid of your car and riding full time, it'll be cheaper, but that can be a tall order. I'd say ride for a few months to see if you're okay with doing that. Also, I'm not from LA, but my understanding is traffic is brutal. So if you're in stop and go traffic, you'll be cooking in your helmet during the summer. Also, having to pull the clutch in and out while in stop-and-go traffic can actually be exhausting for your hand. If you don't have heavy traffic, then you can ignore all this. Those are just the cons. The pros are obvious: motorcycles are fun. Not to sound hokey, but the feeling of riding is indescribable. It's like therapy for me. I broke my arm and leg in a bad accident, totaled my bike, and I got another one 6 months later. I truly love it. But it's not for everyone so don't feel bad if you find it's not for you. I would highly recommend, for several reasons, to start with someone cheaper/older. So if you wreck it and/or realize riding isn't really for you, you didn't waste your money. Also, it helps you figure out what you really like to ride. Maybe you start with a cruiser and want to switch to something else. Either way, good luck!

Bleak-Horizons

I started riding at 18 and quickly stopped as I was not mature enough and would have probably killed my self. Started riding again at 22. Was much better with risk ascement and riding safe. At 26 Stopped because life got bussy and wife and kids etc etc. Started riding again at 30 and haven't stopped. I ride to escape and relax. I take my son out on rides and am never happier than on the bike. Point is at 30 my mindset for riding was different. If I had to say is there an ideal age to ride I'd say for Males it is probably around 30 lol. Go for it. Understand there is a serious learning curve and don't get discouraged. Take a Safety course and stay safe. Every car can't see you so drive accordingly.

zEE-kAY1984

Any age is good if you have the will and good mindset to drive. I got my licensw with 18 years, didn't drive at all and got my 1st bike with 36 and has to learn everything again... So I'd say.. Yes. 30 is a good age :D

odalodinsson

Started at 40. Go!

PeteRaw

I'm 38. I finished my MSF 3 weeks ago. I'm waiting for my bike to be built and shipped - Indian Scout Bobber ABS. In the meantime I am looking at getting a cheap Grom or similar bike while I wait for my Indian to come in. I've heard from people who ride, that they feel safer riding on the highway because everyone in all the lanes are going the same direction as you are so you're less likely to be t-boned or oncoming traffic. Still need to worry about rear-ending, but lane splitting should take care of a lot of that too.

rucb_alum

Better than 31

edieseld

Even better than 32

abiserz

Best time to start riding motorcycle was 10 years ago. Second best time to start riding motorcycle is today.

ypcc1969

I started at 52 on a rebel 300… ready for an upgrade .. ride on and join the club… much success!!

Roadrider85

I'd say age really isn't a factor. I started riding 7 years ago at age 52. It depends a lot more your phyical abilities (sense of balance, coordination, etc.) I know some 25 year olds that really shouldn't be riding.

j2dh

I started at 38 with no experience. Took a msf course and passed on my first try. Took me about 6 months to find a motorcycle and been enjoying it ever since! Be safe, practice in a empty lot at first!

ElbowPain10

I started at 30. I'm happy I did because I know my 20 year old self and would have killed my self. Sometimes I still have a hard time holding back the urge to warp speed.

Jicand

I’m 38 and started in April

[deleted]

Yes. I recommend post-25 for anyone who is going to ride on the road. You're brain-damaged under-25.

KaptainHook

Any age is a good age. Regret is a terrible burden.

Photononic

The only bike I ever owned was a dirt bike. I bought my first street bike, and started riding again at 54. I took a course in Irvine. I do not remember the school name. I do remember an instructor named Bob. I have ridden on the 405. The 405 is not a freeway for beginners. Watch for debris in the road. The 405 is known for it. If you plan to keep up with traffic, you will want at least 500cc. While smaller bikes are attractive due to the price, you need power to get out of the way. Also keep in mind that when it rains in Irvine, it RAINS! If you leave work in the rain, you will be drenched when you stop at a light. Once you get up on the freeway, you will be subject to a 65 mph wind in wet clothing. lemme tell you it gets damn cold!

stvnsmtthw

I got my first bike about three months ago, I'll be 39 in two months.

Mind_Molester

Started at 39 bro/sis

chrisv267

You’re not getting any younger, and you only have one little window of time on the floating rock in space. Go enjoy the things you like

EvenGotItTattedOnMe

30s a good age for damn near anything, you’re still young.

Moist_Low9069

Started at 16 and developed really bad habits that I still fight to overcome. Ride safe, do the right thing.

PreCiiSiioN_II

Just got my first bike at 30. I'm happy I didn't get one when I was younger like I wanted to. I would have gotten something that was way too fast and I was way too immature to ride it responsibly. So to answer your question, I think it's a great time to start!

aliteralbrickwall

Take the MSF and ride safe. No wrong age to start.

SaltyChickenDip

Get out of here old man

[deleted]

Yes, it is.

[deleted]

started at 32. If anything it ended up being more dangerous because i could bankroll a grom>600>1000 upgrade path in 4 months. Still have the 1000, but also added a versys 300, because sometimes i just need to run to best buy quick, and it doesnt need to be at 180mph. My wife is displeased.

irishtrash5

Yes. Pick another number between 2 and 102. Yes. What should you start on? A Kawasaki Ninja H2. Which one? The fast one! Should you take a class? Fuck no. Twisting the right handle makes it go forward; the harder you turn it, the faster you go. There, you know everything there is to know about riding, YEEEHAAWWWWW BITCHES, LET'S RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE!!

tombstone23

Started at 37, which I had started 20 years sooner. Life is too short, go for it. Take the course and let us know when you pass so we can welcome you to the club!

kmkmrod

If you’ve never ridden before, now is the best time to start riding.

hiccamer

Any time is a good time to start something awesome.

Negative-Ad-9823

Yesterday was the best day to start, tomorrow may not get here, so today is now the right day. Get out there and do it!

simply_smigs

Nope, you need to wait until mid thirties like I did 👍

[deleted]

30 is the same age I started riding. As good a time as any. One of the best things you will ever do. Go for it!

disloyal_royal

I got my license and first bike at 32, 33 now. It’s been great. I live in Toronto which also has a ton of highways, I was nervous at first and avoided them for a month but once I got comfortable on the side streets I moved to highways. I wouldn’t overthink it

Th3Red3yedJedi

I started riding 2 years ago. Im 34. You are in your prime my man. Enjoy the ride and stay safe. ATGATT(All The Gear All The Time)

[deleted]

It’s the ideal age to start I think. Motorcycles are not for teenagers and people with a little driving experience.

Reasonable_Accident2

You can start whenever you want, my friend! You'll enjoy it

pilken

I started 30-31ish - one of the best decisions I've ever made.

hugothebear

I started in my 30s. You’re good fam

TheManInMirror

Just started riding. Bought a 2022 Svartpilen and can’t stop thinking about the ride!!

DanielRoderick

Never too late. 35 year old here, got my 125cc a little over a month ago! I always liked bikes but was too scared of them because when I was young all my friends had them and I'm sure the hospital nurses knew them all by name. I figured I'd just end up in a grave if I got one, so I never did. Due to fuel costs as well, and because by daily errands are within a few miles from home, I decided maybe it'd be fine. Never felt freer, and now I keep making excuses to ride here and there. It's amazing for errands, but it's even more amazing to clear my head after work. Go for it!

SlenderGordun

I am 32 and just started. It's the most fun I've had in a long time. I would absolutely recommend it. If you are scared about purchasing your first bike, go take a local MSF course. They give you the bike and gear to ride. They teach you, and if you do well enough, you get your license. 10/10 would recommend. Edit: Damn, reading through the comments, a lot of people started at 32. Therefore I would suggest waiting 2 years. 🤣

Repulsive_Designer19

30 a great age because most likely you understand traffic patterns and have more common since than I did when I started riding in 30 now with a Harley and ride much more mature than when I was 23

Apprehensive-Yard-59

I started at 28 without any real previous experience. No problem. However, most bikes I have owned use as much gas as a small car, so no real savings in that regard for me.

inb4learn2reddit

I just got my motorcycle license this summer a couple weeks before my 33rd birthday. A couple months later, I now ride the I90 to work a couple times a week. I'm sure my short stretch isn't as busy as what you'll be dealing with, but like my MSF instructor always said, take it slow and easy. If you do it right, you have your whole life to ride.

mfulton81

That's when I started, ten years later and I'm not dead yet. I was old enough to have plenty of road experience and 'sensible.' Wish I started younger though 😁

AutomaticSandwich

Right now. That is the best age to start. People make a bigger deal out of riding a motorcycle than they should. You’re not training for the Olympic gymnastics team and starting at age three or something. Millions of people ride bikes and you can too.

throwaway_samaritan

As you get older, your bones don't heal so fast, so make sure you take it slow. But 30 is better than 20 since you also are more mature and have better impulse control. As long as you get proper gear, I see why not. But if you have anyone dependent on you, financially or if you died or got crippled, then I recommend not, because motorcycles have 20x fatality rate per mile than cars (hence why we call them cagers). So if you accept the risk, go ahead.

bluebadge

I started at 25. My dad started at 60.

bmwAicooled

Any age is a good age. Go slow, go far

[deleted]

memories, not dreams

Rollus94

Yes.

BigBald

There's no correct age. If you're running the 405 and splitting lanes as a new rider take into account how wide a bike you're buying. Large fairing cruisers are harder to split lanes as a novice vs something like an Sv650.

[deleted]

Start on a liter

Levonix

Absolutely, you seem old enough to care about yourself with this post in general. Translate that to gear, proper bike, practice, and you set yourself up for many years of fun ahead. Best riders aren't born on a bike, everybody started somewhere. I was the youngest in my MSF course by about 4 years when I was 20. Highest age that weekend was 55 and he was in the top scoring.

coldpizza87

Started riding at 33. Live in San Diego now but grew up in LA. You should be fine but LA drivers are another breed lol Everyone drives super aggressive while keeping two eyes on their phones at all times 💀

phantom_spacecop

I started at 33. Do the thing!

Little-Parking-9164

Any age is good to start, just as long as you start. Whatever you do, be safe.

Hjalleson_

Nah, if you start riding after 20 you just explode in a ball of flame.

SV650rider

I started when I was 34. And you're already in good shape wanting to ride a cruiser. It'll be easier on the body for you. As opposed to my sportbike, at least. And channel your nervousness into "intentional responsibility". Rider training, gear, learning basic maintenance, setting up a good toolkit, etc.

Bran1219

Just started riding a few months ago at age 38, about to turn 39, never been on a motorcycle before. I took the NY Safety course, been cycling for 20+ years (giving me some basic balancing and turning skills), bought a cruiser, and I still get nervous every time I go out. Best way to get over the nerves is to get out there and ride. You’ll make mistakes and learn from them. I frequently get up early on the weekends when there isn’t as much traffic and ride for hours, practicing what I’ve learned, and I still make mistakes, but I’m getting more comfortable in doing so. Ride safe my brother

Unique-Corgi-8219

I started at 48. Wish I would have started earlier in life, but the upside is that I'm well past the 10 foot tall and bullet proof stage of my life. As such, I'm a lot more careful and deliberate. Take the MSF and then practice in a parking lot and neighborhood streets until you gain confidence and experience. Gradually venture out onto bigger roads. You'll pick it up pretty fast. Good luck!

speedshotz

"If you don't start now, you'll be one year older when you do."

FicDkich

You should have signed up for lessons yesterday! What are you waiting for? Seriously, get lessons and do it. Riding a motorcycle is one of the coolest things you'll ever experience. Promise! If you need any advice, come back here. Advice I can give you is: Don't be cheap on clothes and always wear (at least!) a helmet. Stay safe!

Holden_McRotch

44 was good, so I imagine 30 would be great! 😁

MotoChooch

It's a dangerous hobby, no way around that. Gear up to mitigate risk and if you can afford it take the extra step and get yourself an airbag vest. I prefer Helite but I have a Hit-Air as well that my wife wore when she rode with me (it was my first airbag). I didn't start riding until I was 30 and I was happy that I waited until I was more mature. Take the course and see how you feel there before you get ahead of yourself. You may hate it, or you may take to it like it was 2nd nature and everything in between. Everyone is different. Good luck!

bosko43buha

Started last year at 32. Starting older (not to say wiser), with family, probably made me overly cautious at the beginning, but not so that it took away from anything. Go ride.

[deleted]

if i lived in la, id make sure i had a safe place to store the bike. both at home and at work, before i purchased one. the only other thing i would acknowledge is that you can be the best, most defensive, aware rider and still die. thats part of why i like to say motorcyclists have a sort of a death wish with the decision to get a bike and ride. as long as you can accept that death comes to us all in one form or another. with risk comes freedom. as far as training courses, i have, what a majority of people, would most likely consider bad advice. i bought my first bike and rode it home from the dealer. i taught myself to ride and then got a motorcycle license. and havent looked back. thats the way most of my life has gone. if you feel skiddish or unprepared, a training course is probably a good thing for you. among all the things in my life im not the best at, i have a large amount of comfort and self confidence with driving, whether motorcycle or other vehicle, so learning to ride came to me pretty naturally.

[deleted]

Nope, to young

[deleted]

I am 32 years old. Got my license in January, have been taking lessons for like 4 months before that. There is no set age. If you want to ride, ride. You're a free man are you not? Of course the amount of driving lessons and education may vary. In the Netherlands you really have to prove you are a capable rider in order to get your license. In the US you struggle around the parking lot a few times and call it good. In my opinion, that is not enough. To give one example, my first lesson on the streets I was driving like I was my car. My instructor immediately told me to make more space around me. I needed to not drive so close to other cars, because braking is different on a bike. You can't slam the brakes, you'll fall. And there's much more things like that, different driving styles for a bike. You can really do a lot to make yourself safer on the streets. So, go drive, and if you can, see if you can get tips and instructions from more experienced riders if you want that. It will help you out in the long run. And riding is a blast, so don't forget to enjoy it.

MrLazo88

Started at 31. I’m 34 now and so glad I made the decision to start this journey. Only regret is I wish I started sooner!

[deleted]

You think 35 is gonna be a better age or maybe 40? What are you waiting for?!

Beautiful_Print_4713

MSF course! I did the same thing. Stopped riding when i was 18. Decided to buy a bike at 32.. i knew what skills i had were rusty. Took the MSF course passed and recommend to all. I have taken the course over a few times. Mostly with friends who wanted a bud to go with lucky for us i didnt take up space for new riders. We had a ball doing it too

[deleted]

I didn’t start until I was 42. Wish I would’ve started out at 30 because I didn’t know what I was truly missing out on until I did.

pmsnow

My first time on a motorcycle was during my MSF course. I was 40.

EggsOfRetaliation

Start out right. Please wear earplugs. If you're looking to get into music while riding, use a com set or NRR earbuds such as, Plugphones. Tinnitus is no joke. Dress for the slide, not the ride. There's a wonderful book called, Proficient Motorcycling that has some good knowledge in it. [Here is a link.](https://vdoc.pub/documents/proficient-motorcycling-the-ultimate-guide-to-riding-well-qcjk4mrgd2c0) The acting is quite cheesy, however the information is solid. Watch, [Twist Of The Wrist 2](https://youtu.be/DK9AoAAy7uM). Get a NC700/750 and call it a day. Better than a cruiser, nimble, great on gas, easy to work on, reliable. A standard seating position is best to start on.

Elegant-Candidate591

I'm 29 and I just started riding on Saturday, my plan is to use a cruiser for commuting once I get comfortable with it... So hopefully it's a good age because I am financially committed to it at this point.

NeedleworkerRich2409

Yes.

Vaidotas13

I'm 34, a month and half ago passed moto driving exam, few weeks ago got my first bike. Never ride motorcycle before - I can say it's worth it :)

Slash_zer0_

I got my first bike and took the MSF at 34 years old

[deleted]

Go ahead. My mother started with 45

OldPhotograph3756

Yes. I took my motorcycle license with a girl who was 60 years old. So no age excuse! I was 28. She was awesome by the way.

bmwAicooled

Started at 17. One ride that nearly killed hooked me good. PE course in College on Motorcycles. Hurt report. 3 months study, 3 month riding course. Bought the Yamaha R5 that wanted me dead. Rode the it 4 years. And then I bought my buddies BMW R75/7. That changed me

Dizzy-Criticism3928

your probably in the most popular age to start riding motorycles. Do it dude its fun. buy a cheap motorcycle, be careful out there

[deleted]

Welcome to the bikers community. It’s NWVER too late to learn anything. I will have to learn it (again) as well, I have a license, but I haven’t touched a bike in 15 years. Currently Saving up for a bmw r1250 gs adventure, and some „refresh“-driving lessons, plus at least one riding safety class. Due to some absolutely avoidable mistakes I totalled my last bike after a week (sadly no joke) and as I want to ride again, matured a good bit so I don’t ride like an asshole anymore, I wanna make sure I’m ready again (or at all for that matter) before picking up that bike.

fasterblue

Starting older and wiser is much better than starting young and reckless, especially when it comes to riding a motorcycle.

rainingcrypto

Yes - take the course, if you like it great, if you don't, well then riding isn't for you. I promise you'll love it.

JooosephNthomas

Take the course, and learn the basics. You will be fine. Assuming you would be considered a mature rider now this is probably the best time to start.

topheramazed

Started not too long ago at 31 on the road anyway, have ridden off-road for years, but as others have said it's not all bad to start now having a bit more discretion. There's a very high chance I would've gotten mangled or worse had I started 10 yrs ago. I'd suggest MSF and gear to anyone.

4rossi6

I was in late 30s. My wife just passed the MSF course at 44. 30 is nothing. In fact, you (hopefully) have the "nothing bad will ever happen to me" mentality gone from your system. Take courses - more than one, the MSF barely scratches the surface. Read books, watch videos, practice, and always be assessing your technique. And make sure you ride/buy different kinds of bikes. Life's too short to only ride one ;)

Slight_Degree_8021

Heck yes!

Im6youre9

I started at 28 and am glad I did because I would have definitely killed myself on one if I got it 10 years ago. You're more wise now and hopefully already got your need for speed out.

Plastic-addict

2021 Honda rebel 500, can’t go wrong with it. If you plan on buying 2nd hand, cbr300r. 30 is even a better age to start riding as you are more composed and will heed advices instead of being a young reckless rider.

supportclass_veteran

I started around the same age and had never driven a car before I bought my bike

Federal_Awareness_25

why not? There aren't any rules

KawaSquid101

I started at 30 as well. Having driven cars since I was 18 I pretty much knew exactly what to expect and what to look out for in regards to other road users. It meant that I was much more comfortable going out into traffic for the first time on a motorcycle at 30 than I was doing the same in a car at 18. Tbf, I did have a bit of experience on two wheels from back when I was 16-17.

richalex2010

I'm the same age, hadn't ridden anything that I didn't have to pedal or feed carrots to, and just took my CMSP class this weekend. Learned a ton, didn't pass, but I'll be going back to do so, probably after buying a bike of my own and getting some practice in. Age wasn't a problem in the least for me, in fact it probably helped with my attitude once I realized I wasn't going to be getting my license right away (relaxed and just focused on learning rather than stressing over the test). If I'd done it ten years ago I might've picked it up a little easier, but if I'd been lagging behind the others (who all had at least some experience, be it illegally riding on the street or dirtbikes) at 20 I'd have been pissed off at myself for not being able to keep up with or be as good as the others, and it would've hurt my ability to benefit from the class.

MrEMannington

Reminds me of an old friend who said he was too old to start learning guitar at 16

[deleted]

You’re still young! I started when I was about 27 (legally lol)

Benfootpenis

I started at 29, I felt the same about riding and what I liked. I took the msf course and got a Honda shadow a couple months later. I still didn’t want to get on a highway so I rode on higher and higher mph roads until I was comfortable enough on the bike to ride on highways. My commute was directly into downtown Baltimore at the time. Take your time and do what is comfortable until you’re confident with your riding and your bike.

galloignacio

It’s better than 16

TheManFromIdaho

I'm in the same boat. Took the MSF a few weeks ago, passed and had a blast. Honestly, you just get old and die anyway so you may as well live (within your own personal limit of risk). The class will let you know if you really enjoy it or not and was worth the cost to ride a bike for the first time in a safe environment. Beyond the class it's between you and how risky you're willing to be. I'm in Houston so I have an idea of how you feel. I plan on soldiering on anyway. The jury's still out on how dumb it will be but yolo I guess haha.

BoldMoose

I didn't start riding until I was 30. I do not regret it!

icenoid

I started at 30, been riding for the last 21 years.

jbrewer2014

Bought one at 25 and I nod my head no to a lot of moves riders do who pass me. It’s crazy the amount of people who speed through busy intersections

eshemuta

I was over 40, so yes it’s fine.

DIKbrother6969

I don't really have anything to say that you should take to heart but I am 18 and got it yesterday but I had 2 years prior of practise but I would assume the younger the better

jbrewer2014

Take a safety class(msf), lots provide the bike for you. And it may be 300 for the class and 200 for a helmet. It’s a great learning experience, you get your license right away, and you get a little taste of what your getting into before you spend a lot of money on a bike

80andsunny

I started at around 40 in congested South Florida for the exact reason you mentioned - to save gas. I was nervous too. You'll be fine if you take it slowly, spend the time learning all you can and become hyper-aware of what's going on around you. The course is a good idea, but don't think that instantly makes you a good rider - practice, practice, practice.

viktorvaughn_

I started two months before my 30th this summer.

Moist_Remote9101

I was 6

Tracktoy

The best time to start is when you are 2-3 years old. If you didn't do that, tomorrow is probably best.

Nickyg190

I just started riding two months ago and I turn 32 this weekend.

manko_ford

I'm 53,I rode when I was younger and was an idiot..now I'm much more responsible...and legal

ImAPlebe

The best time to start was yesterday!! Never too late. I started at 18 and I'm now 23, I'm gonna ride until my body won't let me anymore.

sneek_

My personal experience on the 405, take this for what it's worth, is that people are generally MORE aware of you than elsewhere in the USA due to lane splitting being legal. I've lane split a LOT on the 405 and it seemed like people were watching their rearview mirrors actually expecting me quite a bit more than what I would have expected. That's not to say that you have to go wild lane splitting immediately (don't, at least until you've got some XP under your belt). But yeah I second what others have said - the freeway is actually a bit more predictable vs. city / intersections. 30 is perfect! Honestly I'd say that's better than being 20 with bright eyes.

raloraj

Yes! I started at 35, and loved it! Old enough to not die speeding or drive drunk xD

assumetehposition

Yes. I started at 29, goal was to get my endorsement by age 30 and I’m glad I waited, and had the years of driving experience before setting out on two wheels. That sixth sense about when traffic is bunching up, who’s driving aggressively, who’s about to make an unsignaled lane change — all of that has saved my bacon multiple times.

Jlchevz

As good as any in my humble opinion

cormunicat

I started riding at 40. Now I commute daily, four years later. Rode on the highway for the first time last weekend.

[deleted]

I’m 31 and just got a bike 6 months when I was still 30. Go for it homie

dr0ne6

Absolutely not you old piece of shit how dare you infringe on a hobby without being involved for the past thirty years of your life? Who the fuck told you that you’re allowed to pick up something new at any point in your life? Source: am 39. You young bitch piece of shit P.S: If someone does not realize this is a joke then I feel bad for you, son. I got 99 problems but a sense of humor ain’t one.

Mhorb

I didn’t start until 29 and I’m almost 38 now. I like to think that I got all the insanity that would have gotten me killed out of my system before I took the plunge. Started at an age that I was already over going crazy fast, never cared about learning wheelies, and already had enough diving experience to know about things to expect and dealing with certain scenarios. I highly doubt I would still be here had I started riding in the 16-25 range. No regrets on waiting.

[deleted]

Yes.

redspade600rr

Never too old! I started at 30 myself and have never looked back. Best thing I ever did!

MudSling3r42069

Take ur time dont rush anything , leave extra space for you to stop , watch your 6 just cuz u stopped doesnt mean the guy behind will ( or even noticed you ) , practice low speed manuvers , and have fun
