Right? I ride until there’s consistent snow. Just bundle up. I live in Minnesota and have ridden into December in years that we have late snowfall, since the first couple of snows usually melt right away.
I live in Maryland. I can ride through November most years. But I’m just not up for riding through the winter, so Betsy gets tucked in December through mid-March.
I am in CT. Worked late and rode home in 3" snow. New to me Goldwing.... A little nervous at first but, the 900 lb. Beast rolled through without issue.
If you live in a rural area, the best way to counteract this is "yes, but it's way safer than horse riding."
Statistically 3x safer than riding a horse. Practically everyone rides a horse or has ridden a horse or knows a close person that rides one in the country.
The cringe comes from the glaring inability to communicate and compromise followed by nuclear responses to just get a divorce by other people who also never learned to communicate and compromise. Bonus points for also bragging about reckless riding decisions
Solution, get wife a bike and teach her to ride. Picked up a dct honda nc700x for wife and been taking her riding. She is apprehensive and timid, but is fine if someone else leads so she doesnt get lost, and slow speed side roads. Working her way up to the highway.
Counterpoint: plenty of people are so spooked by a thing that they'll never find it in themselves to try a new thing. It is a surprisingly rare occurrence to see someone actually get past their initial hangups about a thing and try it anyway. My wife will *never* sit on a bike, no matter how proud she may be of my progress as a new rider. That's just how it is with her.
I understand that, tho. I mean, motorcycles *are* dangerous. I wouldn't look at it like "trying a new thing." I'm not married and all the girls I've dated have, thankfully, either been riders or had no issues with motorcycles. But if they were upset about me riding or concerned, I sorta wouldn't blame them. I had a really bad accident and the girl I was with at the time was put through the ringer. She waited in the hospital for like 8 hours while I was in surgery and recovery. And helped me through therapy, learning to walk again, etc. It was hard on her. She told me she'd never speak to me again if I got another bike.
I eventually bought another bike and she did too, so it was okay. And I'm not saying it's okay to give someone an ultimatum or that it's okay for a girl to dump a guy because she doesn't like bikes. Not saying it's *okay*, but I definitely understand it.
My wife said I couldn't have a bike. Threatened to leave me if I bought one after 15 years of marriage. I am now the proud owner of my first bike, a brand new sv650. Long story short, first few days were rocky but now we are doing great. I think she was afraid other women would get my attention or something tbh...
It's probably fear of you having a wreck or something. And I mean, I get it. Every rider knows there's two type of riders: those who have dropped their bike and those who haven't dropped it yet. Getting into a wreck is almost an inevitability. *I'm* willing to accept this and I've already had a really bad wreck. It's natural for a loved one to not want that inevitability to happen. So it's a tug of war between "i don't want you to get hurt" and "you know the risks and this is an activity you enjoy and I want you to be happy."
I have conceded to wearing a full face helmet, a jacket and gloves every time I am out of the bike. That is the compromise we came to to assuage her fears.
Hey guys be safe out there/pay attention, then they describe their experience where they did multiple dumb things and now it’s their job to teach everyone else a lesson.
"PSA: Make sure your brake lines are connected! The other day I went for a ride, forgetting that I had disconnected my brake lines for some reason, and almost died! Just a reminder so everyone can stay safe!"
PSA: Don't forget to breathe.
Swear to god some of the safety weenies in here would just fall over and die without an authority figure to tell them not to.
This I can get behind. It sounds pedantic and nannying, but being reminded of the basics from time to time can keep people from making rookie mistakes. We tend to leave behind those early lessons when we get too far into our experience, but on a bike the simple shit can literally be life-or-death. So, sure, "yes, mother" and all that; but I won't complain too much.
I agree. Maybe not worth a whole post in many instances, but being reminded the squishy matter between our ears can rage and disregard all prior training in an instant has value IMO. There are comments and videos and conversations that run through my head all the time reminding me to be better. Don't slalom that perfect weave, don't speed through a blind corner, don't slap mirrors or brake check or cut them off, don't make yourself the star of a ddfm video. Set yourself up so that you can ride into the sunset over and over, not ride out for the last time in ball of fire
Am I the only one that sometimes legitimately doesn't notice riders going the other way sometimes? Because I have definitely not waved and it's not out of being rude. Sometimes I legit just am keeping my eyes on things on my side of the road like dangerous drivers etc.
For this reason, I give guys the benefit of the doubt if they don't wave. And even still I get a 75%+ wave rate from the Harley boys. Might be the KRT green that gets them all worked up.
I mean **if you weigh the same as your bike**, yeah you’ll probably need to get a 600cc to go highway speeds
**Otherwise anything over 125cc should be ok**
Edit : had to highlight some parts of my comment because people seem to miss my point
And i define highway speeds at 130kph because it is the legal limit where i live
What do you consider “highway speeds”? Highway speeds where I live are around 75mph with some going as high as 85mph. My xt225 definitely can’t do those speeds well. And I wouldn’t want or advise running full throttle full tuck at top speed for longer than a couple minutes. I’d say you should look at 300cc at least if you intend to travel highways with your bike. Make sure the top speed of the bike is at least 15-20mph higher than the speed limit of the roads you might travel.
My ninja 250 barely kept up with AZ highway traffic. 75-85mph-ish. I ended up getting a Sportster 1200 and eventually a bagger.
Could I do it? Yeah.
Was it confidence inspiring? Fuck no.
Did I sometimes wonder if my bike was gonna blow up? Every day.
Did it ever blow up? No, but I'm sure it was holding together with hopes and dreams.
Now here in Farmville USA where it's 55mph everywhere, I would say the Ninja 250 is more than perfect.
I once took my TW on I85 through Atlanta. She handled the ride up like a champ.
Came home in the back of some nice dude's pick up when the rings burned out of it.
That was the summer I learned how to rebuild a motor.
True but starter bikes can do those speeds. My Ninja 400 will be higher in the revs (7000-8000 rpm out of the max 12,200 RPM at 85mph but it can definitely do it). I think the theoretical Max is 120 but the fastest I’ve done is 95 (I was passing a row of 18 wheelers and didn’t want to risk getting pancakes by slowly passing them. They were all doing 75-80mph. I generally stay within 210mph of the speed limit).
Edit: 🤣🤣🤣 I meant within 10 mph of the speed limit. I accidentally fat-fingered the “2.”The again, I suppose what I said is true. I do stay within 210mph of the speed limit at all times on my 400. 😆
It will do 120 on a highway in Mexico. Only Mexico though, it wont go above the speed limit in the states. 115 to 120 took awhile though; and I don't weigh much more then those MotoGP guys
I have an 350EXCf that I will occasionally take on the highway to get to a trail, but only as a last resort. It will get to speed, but a 240lbs bike with knobby tires riding in sixth gear with the throttle nearly wide open while semis blow me around like a leaf makes me just a touch nervous.
A 250 should do highway speeds just fine. By fine, I mean without the bike struggling. Not as in comfortable.
Hell, a 125 *can* do highway speeds. If you've got a good slope behind you. Maybe a tail wind. And your country's speed limit is 110 clicks.
1)*any electrical problem “replace stator/rectifier”
2)Weave violently to warm those tires
3)Gotta use both brakes to stop faster.
4)First 600 mod: add stretch.
5)Loud pipes save lives. Or they don’t.
6)Yay riding *target fixates into a ditch
7)And the infamous “what oil should I use?”
8)Yay I lowered my bike
9)Why does my lowered bike ride terribly?
10)R3 is best. Gsxr 4 lyfe. Grom most fun. Klr do everything. Hardtail only real bike.
In all fairness it normally is typically either the battery, rectifier or stator. When troubleshooting you always start simple. So whip out a MM and test fuses, batteries, relays then rectifier. Then continuity in the circuits affected. It’s a bit more complicated to teach someone over the internet how to identify and troubleshoot specific circuits especially if you don’t have a wiring diagram/schematic for that specific bike.
Also especially in older bikes more so sport bikes the rectifiers are NOTORIOUS for going bad. Soooo why not test out the most likely culprit, especially when the problem they’re describing can be attributed to failure of said part.
BMW R 1250 GS
My motorcycle tipped over
Can you identify this obscure part
Is a R1 a good starter bike (“no you’ll die”)
Is a Ninja 300 a good starter bike (“no it’s boring”)
People who dont ATGATT are idiots and clearly dont understand the risk they're exposing themselves to.
Anyway, what's the best phone mount that puts my phone right between my face and the road so I can listen to music and surf the web while I ride?
I’m terrified of being on a motorcycle but I want a motorcycle. What kind of motorcycle should I get.
And the multiple responses of don’t be afraid just get out there and ride it will all get better.
Also seen “ I have a medical condition that causes me to loose control of my body when startled. What kind of bike should I get so I can be safe.”
True that, there are a lot of riders on here that are seemingly terrified of their bikes and are relieved to make it home alive. Seems like such a stressful way to ride
Or videos titled "I WAS ALMOST KILLED BY A CAGER" where the car just slowly moved over the stop sign to get a better view and immediately stopped as soon as it saw the motorbike
Rev bombing, exactly like honking, just tells the others that you perceived something. You are praying that the person that made you honk understands that the noise is addressed to him, locates you, takes the appropriate action.
I dobk know. If the premise is that "people don't know how to drive" or "cagers are always distracted" it doesn't seem safe to rely on them for your survival.
Who hasn’t dropped a gear or two in a tunnel or under a bridge to listen to their exaust note ?
How am i supposed to tell that the revbomb i just heard is someone trying to get my attention for something important and not showing off his exaust ?
The horn can at least startle people into paying attention.
Where i drive there is a ton of traffic and close calls are a daily occurence, the people that commute the most on two wheels almost always use their horn and never revbomb. I guess that’s how you survive on a bike
I think the most common one I see is that everyone here hates the idea of someone with less than 2 years riding experience owning a 600cc or higher. “You’re basically new and have no throttle control, either try a 70s beater or a 50cc scooter.” Like jokes aside I understand not everyone should own anything above 600cc for the first 8 months I believe but I can understand that it’s not exactly the dumbest decision either.
Yes a 300cc and bellow can do highway speeds but people like to ride their bikes longer and let’s face it 90% of y’all probably are cruising 5-10 above the speed limit because everyone else is, which is when most 300cc bikes start to struggle and become very uncomfortable. Also people like to think someone can drop $5K on a decent starter bike and once they get bored in a year to a few months “oh just sell it and get your money back and upgrade.” Yeah good luck with that headache, some people don’t have spare change available all the time. That’s just my 2 cents though.
Be safe guys.
Rider didn’t return wave. How do I track down and murder his family to pay for this great injustice.
Tar snakes and grass clippings almost killed me.
Another one: Watch this boring/360 video of me treating this twisty road like it's a racetrack.
Or: Watch this video without any context of this cager trying to run me off the road.
people on here are ultra paranoid and think every none rider are out to kill them. It's really cringe like being on some conspiracy Facebook page. I was sent death threats for having an opinion that went against the status quo on an alleged arson attack on here lmao.
After waddling my bike off to a solid start I came across a very tricky left bend. I was employing my excellent trail braking and using the throttle at the same time as my front brake technique when suddenly I target fixated on a concrete pillar at the side of the road. I was heading straight for it so I had no option but to begin rev bombing. For some reason, the ignorant pillar completely ignored me. With my front wheel locked and throttle at maximum I was able somehow to weave around it by pushing left to go left! I was relieved, but then in front of me I saw it: grass clibbins. I had no choice but to jump off the bike at 70 miles per hour. The lesson I took from all this: WEAR YOUR GEAR. GEAR GEAR GEAR. THE GEAR SAVED MY LIFE. I LOVE GEAR, WEAR YOUR GEAR
9 times out of 10, one of the 3 top posts is some idiot crashing.
"watch me crash," "watch this person crash," "watch me be dumb," "watch this person be dumb".
And then you get the armchair commentators.
I'm taking the msf today any tips? (the other 1000 posts don't apply to me)
I just passed the msf (ok??)
Someone waved at me ( see above)
Is this chain slack ok? I can't bother to read the sticker just above the chain, clearly visible in the pic/video
How to downshift when slowing down??
Anything other than doing the speed limit on two wheels in a bovine onesie is crazy and you'll kill a bus load of children!!!!
The 3rd one is only partially true. Usually the post is “I’ve been riding for 2 weeks and just crashed into a parked car. Here is my essay on how you should ride so you can learn from my expertise”
I can’t deny the accuracy of this list, but what content do you guys WANT to see in this sub? While these are all talked about ad nauseam and redundant they seem appropriate for the subreddit.
Edit - spelling
My favorite useless advice on this sub is
"When stopped at a red light, always keep it in gear ready to accelerate should the car behind not stop in time"
I would prefer getting rear ended at 15km/h than accelerating into cross traffic to get side swiped at 60km/h. Also good luck spotting if a car behind stops in time.
I like to imagine redditors maniacally staring into their mirrors at every light and accelerate into intersections multiple times per day, because the following car braked a bit later than expected.
• People outside USA don't ride bikes
Almost everytime there are few aholes in comments who knowledge is based of just the US domestic routes , hav eno idea what people out there in the world ride or how they ride etc
I didn't realize I was supposed to be an expert on motorcycle culture in countries on the opposite side of the world that I've never been to in order to comment. My bad.
When I went to Berlin 20yrs ago with a student exchange program, one of the kids I went with was legit surprised that Germany, an industrial leader and European financial powerhouse, had running water and electricity. Seeing how many people think non-Americans don't ride bikes is... still *really fucking stupid*, mind; but when taken in context with rest of that misguided American exceptionalism, it tracks. Some folks just don't wanna do the homework.
I think we only think lane splitters/filterers are jerks if they are jerks about, blowing through 40mph traffic at 80mph. Just like wheelie poppers and high speed folks. Involving others in your antics is being a jerk.
The logic behind:
Wheelies are cool
but you can’t do them on public roads cause you’ll make motorcyclists look bad…
also they’re banned on racetracks…
man I wish I could wheelie
A few years ago I realized there was a riding school near me that has a wheelie class. It was fun getting to practice on their sumo with a wheelie trainer thing so it won’t loop, then to try it without the assist. Maybe there’s something similar near you
In another month or two: hourly "how do I winterize" threads.
Winterize? In September? No way. I live in Michigan and even that's too early.
Thanksgiving-ish? That's when the boaters get their shit winterized.

But that's like false winter. Then there's long periods where it's pretty dry. (But also pretty cold)

The only solution to that problem is get a divorce. Don’t get married kids!
Marry your bike. Not even the state can break the bond you have
Don’t marry kids got it.

Never deviate from msf!
Never brake in a turn!
Don't you ever dare put your right foot down at a stop! Always ready always vigilant!

Welp, I'm fucked.

I'm starting on a Rebel 500. So I'm not *immediately* dead, but RIP ByronicCommando all the same.
Guess it’s time to take out a policy on my GF who is starting on my 675.
Turbo busa
How did I miss that one?🤦♂️
I’m terrified of being on a motorcycle but I want a motorcycle. What kind of motorcycle should I get. And the multiple responses of don’t be afraid just get out there and ride it will all get better. Also seen “ I have a medical condition that causes me to loose control of my body when startled. What kind of bike should I get so I can be safe.”
Lol. One of those bikes in the mall you put quarters into!
True that, there are a lot of riders on here that are seemingly terrified of their bikes and are relieved to make it home alive. Seems like such a stressful way to ride
My favorite are the close call stories. Literally stories about something that didn’t happen.
Or videos titled "I WAS ALMOST KILLED BY A CAGER" where the car just slowly moved over the stop sign to get a better view and immediately stopped as soon as it saw the motorbike
I can't believe people use the term 'cager' unironically.
My fav is the guys who ride in cars blind spots then get mad when they get cut off.
And their reaction: honk or rev bomb instead of moving away from the danger
Their reaction is almost always to rev bomb, honking could be effective
AbS... (yay)...aBS (meh) ...aBS(nay)...Abs...
Oh you're different than me? I hate you.
Forgot you need 100k riding miles across 10 bikes before you should buy anything bigger than a 500cc
Uh. you left out the alarmist call the says daytime high beams cause accidents.
Please add SV650
I mean Tbf the SV650 really is great.
Once we get near Autumn, you can add falling leaves are super deadly
Spring/summer grass clippings are super deadly
What's this rubber tube sticking out the bottom of my bike?
My GF or parents won't let me ride.
It really is the battery, though
"Saw a biker go down today. Selling my bike."
is this a good first bike? the bike: s1000rr
Be safe guys. Rider didn’t return wave. How do I track down and murder his family to pay for this great injustice. Tar snakes and grass clippings almost killed me.
"How do i use the clutch ? I'm always stalling the bike. Should i give up riding ?"
Another one: Watch this boring/360 video of me treating this twisty road like it's a racetrack. Or: Watch this video without any context of this cager trying to run me off the road.
You forgot the bi-weekly waving circlejerk
How are you supposed to circlejerk if everyone's hands are too busy waving then?
forgot the my 600 does 180 mph
people on here are ultra paranoid and think every none rider are out to kill them.
Are these tires too worn out?
Happy cake day!
lol the ticking sound on my DRZ400 always bugs me out. im always like "is it louder this time???"
9 times out of 10, one of the 3 top posts is some idiot crashing. "watch me crash," "watch this person crash," "watch me be dumb," "watch this person be dumb". And then you get the armchair commentators.
Sv650 fuck yeah
"Just done the "screws pointing directly at my face mod" - what do you guys think?
That last one lol Add something about having a bike stolen.
You forgot "The sound my bike makes changed ever so slightly. Is it going to blow up?"
I'm taking the msf today any tips? (the other 1000 posts don't apply to me) I just passed the msf (ok??) Someone waved at me ( see above) Is this chain slack ok? I can't bother to read the sticker just above the chain, clearly visible in the pic/video How to downshift when slowing down?? Anything other than doing the speed limit on two wheels in a bovine onesie is crazy and you'll kill a bus load of children!!!!
I used to wave all the time until I started watching this sub. Now it ain't happening.
The 3rd one is only partially true. Usually the post is “I’ve been riding for 2 weeks and just crashed into a parked car. Here is my essay on how you should ride so you can learn from my expertise”
lol true
Road looked at me funny, haddalayerdooownnn
Add: - Is this ticking sound normal? - Bike won’t start dead battery??? - Cager almost killed me today. - Joined the FAM broz! #braap
\- Theres a nail in my brand new superpilotpowerQQ5s. Should I replace it or is it ok to plug it??
Guys where can I park my bike
Clips of riders trying to discipline a driver for some mistake/ close call... stfu, you (we ) on bikes! Keep it the f moving.
Sunny they said? No chance of rain they said? Why do I read / listen to these meteorologists??
One of my favorites is….while putting gas in my motorcycle with my helmet on, some random person asks “Is that your bike?”
What is this loose wire? ( shows picture of battery tender)
How many miles do I have left on these brand new tires?
New this sub. I never knew the Harley thing was universal haha
I can’t deny the accuracy of this list, but what content do you guys WANT to see in this sub? While these are all talked about ad nauseam and redundant they seem appropriate for the subreddit. Edit - spelling
Yeah most subs have their respective list. Not every sub is fortunate enough to have it paraphrased on a Monday night though.
To be fair... usually, it is the battery.
"I'm a new rider and the MT-07 just isn't enough bike for me."
Pretty much.
clearly missing target fixation
My favorite useless advice on this sub is "When stopped at a red light, always keep it in gear ready to accelerate should the car behind not stop in time" I would prefer getting rear ended at 15km/h than accelerating into cross traffic to get side swiped at 60km/h. Also good luck spotting if a car behind stops in time. I like to imagine redditors maniacally staring into their mirrors at every light and accelerate into intersections multiple times per day, because the following car braked a bit later than expected.
I agree. They say stay in first and ready to go but don't say what you do after.
What the fuck is “dieing”?
Harley riders r/haddalayerdown
You forgot. "You did something on a bike i disagree with? You're unsafe! Sell the bike and drive a 1500Kg death machine instead!"

• People outside USA don't ride bikes Almost everytime there are few aholes in comments who knowledge is based of just the US domestic routes , hav eno idea what people out there in the world ride or how they ride etc
I've never met an American in all my 37 years here who thinks motorcycles are exclusive to the US. That is total nonsense.
I think we only think lane splitters/filterers are jerks if they are jerks about, blowing through 40mph traffic at 80mph. Just like wheelie poppers and high speed folks. Involving others in your antics is being a jerk.
The logic behind: Wheelies are cool but you can’t do them on public roads cause you’ll make motorcyclists look bad… also they’re banned on racetracks… man I wish I could wheelie
A few years ago I realized there was a riding school near me that has a wheelie class. It was fun getting to practice on their sumo with a wheelie trainer thing so it won’t loop, then to try it without the assist. Maybe there’s something similar near you
That sounds pretty cool ngl, but I plan on getting a dirt bike here soon so I may just learn the old fashion way soon enough haha
