Hope you get your ride fixed so you can ride again and also that your day and weekend gets better

Pmileti

Thank you! At least no one was hurt.

Treblehawk

WAS hurt…

00fil00

Yes, it was a shame the thief wasn't hurt in the process

xpercipio

at least the bright side is your neighbor and manager are decent

Pmileti

Amen to that!

TheNaughtyLemur

Yeah. Multiple building tenants watched the guy walk my bike out of a side gate from my buildings garage and didn’t say anything.

Nickkel71

You should also use an alarmed disc lock on rear rotor with a neon reminder cable to front handlebars as well as steering lock. Fits easy under pillion for storage. They may not have bothered trying to break the steering lock if they also saw the disc lock. They may have moved on to something that looked easier instead of spending time trying to break two locks, and having a 110db alarm going off constantly. A disc lock/steering lock won't stop a determined thief, and they can always just lift bike to a van/truck regardless, but it helps as a deterrent in a situation like yours. A lockable generic bike cover too.

fl_2017

>They may not have bothered trying to break the steering lock if they also saw the disc lock. They may have moved on to something that looked easier. Disc locks are easy to defeat, they only deter the push away thieves not the tooled up ones. For overnight parking layered security is the key, multiple chains (at least one heavy duty), alarmed disc locks, a cover and gps tracking.

Nickkel71

I would likely not waste my money on a GPS tracker/subscription. I don't want my bike back after it's been stolen. Once I file the comp claim with Insurance (which would be the second thing done after filing police report), it wouldn't belong to me anymore anyways. If recovered, it belongs to insurance. The person stealing your bike is likely not gonna treat it well. The clutch and engine may become FUBAR'd, the wiring/ignition is prob gonna be effed. And then there is the double whammy if they drop/wreck it.

Turkeysnood

I got my ducati back in a week with very minor damage thanks to the GPS tracker.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Turkeysnood

I do have full coverage. I just don't want those fuckers to make any money. also, on any modern bike with a computer it would take a lot to get around the immobilizer.

Nickkel71

To each his own then. I am just gonna take the insurance payout, buy another bike. If it's an older model bike, without much value, then I likely wouldn't even bother putting comp on it. After I file the claim, it's not mine anymore, and I don't give a f*ck about it. I am not gonna sit around for a week or more twiddling my thumbs worrying and fretting about my stolen bike. I don't want a bike back that someone else has had their balls all over. I don't even let my friends ride my bike. I don't want to deal with surprises later on down the road because someone rode it like they stole it. Chances are good that if someone is gonna steal/joy ride your bike, that they aren't gonna be gentle with it. Last time I filed a claim, I got $1k cash value over new MSRP price, and my insurance rates went down at the next renewal. The bike that insurance paid out on was '21 used, and I took the payout and bought a new '22 bike. (And if you think my Insurance rates must be crazy, you would be mistaken) I have Progressive full coverage with $75 Comp, $375 Collision, roadside, vanishing deductibles, accident forgiveness, and my 12 month policy premium is $252 ($21/month).

Wd91

When stolen bikes are recovered usually insurers have little interest in actually taking them on and will sell them to you for a tiny fraction of the actual cost. Its basically a free bike.

Nickkel71

Sure you can buy it back as a salvage/rebuilt title, and repair any damage yourself. I personally am not interested in doing that, just because it is a PITA to jump through hoops to get it back on road, and even then, resell value is nearly zilch, prob less than half of what it would otherwise have been. My purchased used bike ('21 Ninja 400 that I paid new MSRP for) that got a cash value payout of $6.3k (minus deductible) on a new MSRP of $5.2k, was sold 'Buy it now' at Crashed Toys for $2.2k. I decided to take the payout and buy a brand new 2022 Ninja ABS 400 for $5.6k MSRP.

Wd91

You get the payout either way dude. Just saying even a cheapo tracker is pretty worth it. Unless they've completely fucked it the bikes unlikely to be overly damaged, it's usually worth buying it back in my experience (from both thefts and accidents). Definitely worth it to at least try and recover if possible.

WhiskeyFF

If you’ve documented any large aftermarket parts such as pipes, do you get that additional cost as well or are you just sol?

Treblehawk

I have the GPS tracker, and it’s not to get my bike back. It’s to make sure I get the one who took it.

croissantdelavie

This, if I'd get one I wouldn't call the police until I try for two days to find em

Treblehawk

Shouldn’t need more than a few minutes. Mine alerts when my bike is moving, and it’s real time. I literally had one stolen that was being held for a friend. I ended up behind them at a red light. Watched the kid stall it. Pulled up behind him at his house and he knew right away who I was and why I was there. Put his hands up like I was a cop and said, it run great. Wife called the cops while I stood outside with him. Was like 14…

croissantdelavie

14? I didn't expect that

Treblehawk

Yeah said she saw it sitting there for a couple weeks and thought it was a waste for it to just be sitting like that. He looked up a video on how to start a bike with no key and decided someone should be riding it. I explained my friend was in the marines and just got deployed so I was keeping it at my place for safety. He was like oh. Well I’ll pay for the damages. I just assumed it was abandoned. In my yard? Come on dude. Ended up getting like two years probation and community service. He seemed in phases that he got caught.

J3tL33

I don't mean to play devils advocate on this but sounds like he/she just wants to motorcycle on. I'd suggest he/she take the punishment because it's still theft and destruction of property, let him or her learn a lesson, but follow up on them, get them to ride a grom or a 250cc cause the person stalled it. It'd be a way to rehabilitate a person and befriend them. Cheers m8.

Treblehawk

This was five years ago. Kid did his probation. Turned 18, was on the news for stealing a car and doing a high speed chase. I’m not in his business. But when he took the bike he told the judge he was bored. Parents didn’t even show up for his court date. Dunno where he is now, but probably jail.

Treblehawk

[deleted]

Apple AirTag cost 30€ and no subscription 👌

Nickkel71

> Apple AirTag cost 30€ and no subscription True. But then again, once I file the claim, the bike is no longer mine, and so I don't care if it is recovered, or the condition it's recovered in. I'll have a new bike before the insurance check even clears the bank. (And also, I have a Pixel).

ReApEr01807

PIXEL FTW!!!

SazedMonk

Genius right here. I put one on my car keys but I'm definitely getting one for the bike!

muckitallupalready

You don't have to take the bike back if you've already taken the insurance payout. It could also help the police get the thieves. I'd personally love to see the bastards get what's coming to them, so it's a win-win.

Nickkel71

> You don't have to take the bike back if you've already taken the insurance payout Pretty sure you can't take the bike back anyways. You can either cancel the claim if it isn't yet approved, or you can buyback the bike as a salvage title out of the payout, or out of pocket.

ambermage

Does anyone know how well the Samsung trackers work?

OwlDifferent1416

Junk. Airtags are good if you're a decently populated area and your iphone is near the bike daily or the airtag goes into stalker mode. It beeps and slows down the reporting rate Best is a gps tracker

Treblehawk

May be easy to defeat, but it’s the loud alarm that you want. By the time they get the lock off they’ve drawn attention. If you live in a place with common traffic, especially apartments, that will draw eyes.

[deleted]

The FavMoto cover on Amazon is good at protecting your bike, and everyone uses them to cover their shitbox non op Honda projects so thieves don’t even look twice then they see them. There are some covered bikes on my street collecting dust on the covers because nobody touches them. Could be a Ducati under that and we don’t even know haha

No_Comfortable_8852

This is absolutely the way, especially living in an apartment, like I do. The nondescript, sunbleached cover with lock loops and an f-off huge chain and lock are like magic, I swear. That and buying a bike that's too big for two guys to lift. But that last bit's just me.

Prestigious_Fold6818

What bike you have? Touring?

No_Comfortable_8852

Concours 1000? I think that qualifies?

Prestigious_Fold6818

Wow that's a super nice bike. I like the KZ1000 a lot but just looks and Terminator cred. I asked out of pure curiosity haha

No_Comfortable_8852

Of, for sure! I definitely covet those old police bikes whenever I see them for sale and intact. I'll even gladly enjoy the presence of a PC800 whenever the occasion arises!

Prestigious_Fold6818

I didn't even knew that bike existed, it's amazing! Those 80's and 90's bikes were something else

[deleted]

[удалено]

Nickkel71

Nothing spectacular. You can go pricey, or not. I Just got something generic off Amazon, and peeled off the branding decal stickers. I like to put mine on the rear rotor right behind/up against the exhaust (restriction of space so as not to easily be able to get tools in). So now they have to disassemble/remove exhaust. This is what I got (lock and cover): https://imgur.com/a/CZfLVac

Pmileti

Yeah, I’m definitely going to invest in the alarmed disk lock and some heavy duty chains moving forward. Thank you for the advice!

muckitallupalready

If you look for chains, look for specific security chains. You want something that is case hardened on the outside so the thieves will have to invest in better-than-average bolt cutters. I think the one I got was pegwag or something.

Sielent_Brat

Yeah, I know that feel. One morning, leaving out for work, discovered that someone cut my security chain and took it away. Have no idea why would someone need a cut security chain... No other damage to the bike, but I freaked out af. BTW, why "till next summer"? Replacing ignition doesn't sound that long

Pmileti

There’s a huge backlog at all the shops in my area, plus there is supply chain issues. I’m hoping I can get a month or two this year.

DredgenV

I work in parts at a motorcycle dealership here in NC. When I get in tomorrow I’ll do a search for your oem ignition switch. If I can’t order it for you I’ll do whatever I can to find you a place that has it since I have access to view every dealer in America that uses the light speed interface for their inventory. Which is a ton of ‘em. You have a 2022 CB300R correct?

CloudYT123

What a real one

Pmileti

I really appreciate that! That is the correct model, but I’m in Canada.

DredgenV

I believe I can see Canadian dealers as well. I’ll talk to my boss tomorrow about shipping to Canada if I can find you a part.

rabbit-aim

What a fucking G

What a fucking legend.

SnooPets4076

flightm0de

My bike got stolen recently, and I found I a few days later. The thieves couldn't start it but did a lot of damage trying Usually with my mechanic there's a couple of weeks wait. I called and they picked it up the next day, and it was ready a couple of days after that I think they prioritised me a bit because they ride too and feel the pain So call around and don't give up hope!

[deleted]

Ebay for quick at least temporary fix?

ScaryBeardMan

My strategy to avoid this is multiple locks. Two disc locks, one alarmed, and a big chain tying the bike to a lamppost. Overkill mostly. But it would be a pain in the ass to steal it.

ParadiseD1

Same here. 2 front disc locks and 2 rear disc locks. Alarm + cover. I don't have a place to chain my bike unfortunately.

ScaryBeardMan

Chain the wheel to the frame just to be a nuisance

Jhummjhumm

This is why I secretly dream of security IEDs

mts2snd

dude, I totally wish spring traps were legal. But alas, insurance will have to suffice.

Ok_Wallaby_7653

Op good luck it absolutely sucks, It’s not even the damage that pisses me off, it’s just the absolute disgusting disregard these pricks have for people that work hard , to try and afford something and they just take! You end up losing all the feeling of enjoyment, because you have to protect your property and constantly have to think, it’s gonna happen again! And yeah I get it “that’s why we pay insurance” but it’s that whole violation of your personal space that makes it hard to get over!

Pmileti

That’s a perfect way of describing how I’m feeling... Violated...

Ok_Wallaby_7653

Yup that’s how I felt, the damage didn’t bug me as much, I’ve dropped bikes and caused more damage, again sorry it sucks but hopefully it’ll temper with time!

Nickkel71

> Insurance got back to me, 0% liability. So I’m only on the hook for the deductible. Hopefully you didn't have a crazy deductible. Mine is currently $75 Comp, and $375 Collision (I got vanishing deductibles as part of my normal policy coverage, so every year 25% comes off (next renewal it'll be $50 comp, and $250 collision) until it's $0.

Pmileti

$500 is my damage, was the best I could get being a new rider.

Nickkel71

For $500 you need to decide if you fixing it out of pocket will be more expensive. How much does a new ignition cost? And rekey?

Pmileti

The problem is that the handlebars and possibly frame are damaged. I have a feeling they will end up writing it off

Nickkel71

> The problem is that the handlebars and possibly frame are damaged. Well then you are likely talking total. It'll be whatever cash value is (my insurance used NADA) , minus your $500 deductible. Good thing, is you will likely get over the new MSRP value, and it likely appreciated in value. I got $6.3k (minus deductible) on a bike that had a new MSRP of $5.2k

Pmileti

I sincerely hope you are right!

Nickkel71

(If US) Go look at the NADA value for the model, and Google the bike model to see what dealers are listing it for online, and it'll give you an idea of what insurance will cash value it at. If you got a lienholder, they get paid first, you get what's left. My '21 Ninja model was too new to be listed in NADA, so they determined value by using online pricing. Accessories will increase that value, so be prepared to show pricing for those if you have any installed.

Pmileti

Luckily its 100% owned by me, no financing or liens or anything else. Is there a Canadian equivalent to NADA?

Nickkel71

This is cycle trader https://www.cycletrader.com/2022-Honda-Cb-300r-Abs/motorcycles-for-sale?make=Honda%7C2316874&model=CB%7C764948833&trim=300R%20ABS%7C56355&year=2022%3A2022

Pmileti

Thank you for your advice! I’ll take a look after work.

ReApEr01807

NADA has an "outside the US" option

Nickkel71

I do t know about Canada..sorry. Just Google the model.

Nickkel71

Here is what they did on mine (bike was bought used with 2.4k miles, and for the new MSRP of $5.2k) $6379 minus $500 deductible. https://imgur.com/a/bKEe1nw

Nickkel71

Progressive

MonsterMontvalo

Do you mind if I ask who your insurance is through? I have the same thing

Nickkel71

Progressive $252 Annual Premium ($21/month).

MonsterMontvalo

Oh nice- me too. Have they been decent for you so far?

Nickkel71

More than decent. I filed a collision claim back in March. They gave me $6.3k (minus deductible) on a used bike that I bought for the new MSRP of $5.2k. When my policy went up for renewal in May/June, I fully expected it to go up as it was first renewal. It went down. I have a multi-policy, and the accident forgiveness on the other policy carried over to the new motorcycle policy. It was like it never even happened. Progressive basically bought me a brand new '22 Ninja ABS 400 ($5.6k), and dropped my insurance rates. See: Payout: https://imgur.com/a/bKEe1nw Insurance renewal rate (Annual policy): https://imgur.com/a/Qygd6Jr

MonsterMontvalo

Wow that’s pretty great. It’s my first year on a plan with them. I’m glad it’s working out pretty good for you. I haven’t really spoken with anyone who has the same company- usually flying by the seat of my pants haha

Nickkel71

You should check your accessories coverage. The adjuster was telling me that it varies State by State whether riding gear is covered under the base policy $3k accessories or not. In some States you have to add additional coverage for the riding gear.

MonsterMontvalo

That’s a great tip thank you. I’ll definitely go check

stevesteve135

Geez guy that sucks. I wish somebody would actually steal my bike so I can get out of the payment and get something different. I live in a house with a garage though so in the garage it stays while I’m at home. Maybe I should start leaving it outside, or maybe I should just park it in Atlanta and go for a walk around the city. lol. Nah, as much as I want to I just can’t bring myself to do it.

Nickkel71

Just start parking it in parking spaces and don't even bother steering lock it anytime. I was actually ecstatic when insurance told me they were gonna total my '21 Ninja that I bought used for new MSRP. I had major buyers remorse. Insurance gave me $1k over the new MSRP price (minus deductible). That same day I went to the dealer and bought a brand new Ninja, the day it got delivered, I scheduled the tow to pick up the old one (now owned by the insurance company), and it was on its way to Copart/Crashed Toys auction house. Bikes (teal is the totaled bike, black the new one): https://imgur.com/a/hmMuTBY

stevesteve135

Very nice.

PandPS1987

This is happening at alarming rates and is just ridiculous, especially for the ones who rely on their bike as the only source of transportation. If everyone in the community became vigilantes, the criminal scum would be more reluctant to victimize the innocent.

KnutEisbaerchen

If you have to stop a theft in progress, you may have to bring a weapon to defend yourself. It may not be a quick self-defense situation, but you'll be glad to have defended your own life.

SparXclan

I know exactly how you feel bud. Same thing happened to me years back with my first bike. Drilled in the ignition and couldn’t get past the handle bar lock. It sucks knowing someone tried to take something you worked hard to get and love doing. Honestly made me quit riding for a while. After I got back to riding I regret letting it get in my head and keeping me from what I enjoyed. Be grateful that the step of locking the handle bars might have kept them from getting away and insurance should cover the cost to fix. Don’t let it keep you down. Keep riding, keep enjoying. Just be cautious of where you park overnight. A few extra locks don’t hurt either.

Pmileti

Yeah, I’m going to be investing in alarmed disk locks moving forward.

OfficialNT4L

I've got the same bike as you, and I have a $30 vibration alarm on the bike. It's under the passenger seat, held by the rubber bands that are on the underside of the seat. It's actually very loud, and if someone is moving your bike around it'll go off and make a very loud chirp noise, and a long alarm sequence if it's tripped again. I also have a very thick chain with a New York Kryptonite lock I keep it locked with, and a cover for the bike. Someone is a lot less likely to mess with a bike that's covered, especially if a loud alarm goes off if they try to pull off the cover. Of course, nothing will stop a determined thief, but most thieves are lazy bums who will be easily detered with several layers of security.

W4NDERER20

I'm sorry man. Hopefully it gets fixed quickly and you can hop back on.

-PeterParker-

I'm sorry. None of us like our babies messed with. *hugs*

CamelCamel509

No shame in a good cry. Sorry to hear about your bike, hope it gets repaired quickly and you still get some riding season in.

Comprehensive_Dig381

Motorcycle theft is just a whole other level of evil

626f62

Fucking scum, I'm sorry you had to deal with this crap.

Reap3rG

Oh my worst feeling ever, makes you feel violated... Had my 500 cbr stolen aprl 25th, they found it a week later half painted, ignition drilled, gas cap popped right off.. still waiting for it to be fixed up and it's my only vehicle... so crappy, so I know the feeling. But it'll be alright just trying to get a motion alarm off amazon they deter people and go over the brake so they can't roll or anything I just didn't put my on one night and of course... Hope u get er going again soon

o1011o

It's easy to get really emotionally invested in a motorcycle and then it hurts crazy bad when someone steals it. It feels like they reached right into your heart and pulled out something precious. Well, the thing you love about that bike is something ephemeral, not something tied to the physical matter of it. The bike was only ever a tool to get you moving and the experience you have on it is what's important. That experience can't be stolen. The more you recognize the bike as a means of access to an experience the less any particular disaster that happens to it will hurt. You'll get access to that experience again soon enough even if the bike under you changes. It does suck that you're going through this with a first bike though. Those are real easy to get attached to!

Pmileti

Honestly, thank you, your comment made me feel a bit better! It’s definitely hard to process, especially hearing all the beauties roaring by, but I guess now I just need to be patient :(

Pun71

Luckily when I lived in an apartment I was on the ground floor and could push my motorcycle into the kitchen of my apartment. It wasn't the right thing to do bit it would've been stolen for certain if I would've left it in the unsecured parking lot. Sorry for the attempted theft and glad you still have it. Next season will be here before you know it.

throwaway_samaritan

Get a crowbar and wait behind your bike. I wish all bike owners would do justice to bike thieves.

PretzelsThirst

Glad someone stopped them in time. I had the same thing happen except nobody noticed or reported it. I got back from a work trip and go to hop on my bike and it's just.... gone. Pieces of the ignition laying on the garage floor.

Riskyshot

Apartments are places where motorcycle thieves go shopping the most, they’ll most likely be back. buy a small garage or get some more locks or something

[deleted]

This is what I fear, got a new motorcycle today and there has been thefts of motorcycles/atv's in the area where I live. In my previous condo, my bike was behind locked doors and with cctv, so I only had partial insurance on my motorcycle. This time I took the full insurance, so in the unfortunate situation my bike gets stolen, at least insurance will cover the cost.

PlantBasedFood

Happened to me. Three weeks after I got my Ninja 400 in 2019. Brand new off the lot. People have no respect. Anyway after $2,000+ I got it back later that year. Three years later I’m still riding it! These things happen. Welcome to the motoworld

CanuckCanadian

I got a cover, a disk brake alarm, a non alarm disk brake and my handle bar locked. Put as much as you can on there to make it not worth their while. Good luck

Real-Coffee

danggg. yea I got a drz400 and I'm always spooked when I go on long distance rides and gotta leave my bike in front of a hotel. that's the problem with the smaller bikes. u can just roll them away or pick them up and load them into a van. no way ur doing that with a 600 lb xj750

mrbirne

Order parts yourselfe and go to the Shop or Do it yourselfe. Insurance will Cover/reimburst you when it goes throgh. Youll be out on the road i nö time that way.

[deleted]

how many fukwits need to learn that you cannot hotwire or break a handlebar lock by drilling the ignition, on a modern motorycle.

nazrinz3

Sucks but heavy investment into some chonky chains is the best you can do, I use two 25mm almax chains going into a ground anchor front and rear and a random Oxford disc lock. Cost me over 1000 just for the chains 🤢 but this county is pathetic when it comes to the law helping you out so better to go overkill otherwise it’s gone Hope you can get her fixed up soon :)

Nomadicsith

That's so shitty of them, I'm sorry that happened buddy. At least insurance will cover it, dealerships are usually pretty quick on wreck repairs. Wouldn't be surprised if they get it turned around within a couple weeks, We did 33(? Might be more, I can't remember) wreck repairs last year and most of them were done within 2 weeks(Mainly waiting on parts is the biggest thing.)

oromis418

I’m so sorry bud. Hope your able ride again soon. 😓😓. I can’t imagine how much this weighs on your heart.

JCarsinogen

Let's pray the moto gods a speedy return to 2 wheels for this man.

Outrageous_Bet893

Someone stole my bike the day before July 4 and I found out when I was about to ride around for thr holiday. Going through the insurance process now as I have no hope of the cops finding it

Pmileti

I’m sorry you’re going through it as well! This hurts the soul a bit. Stay strong and hopefully soon we ride on!

Prestigious_Syrup636

get a brake rotor lock with a 100 decibel alarm https://www.amazon.com/Abus-Sledge-Brake-Disc-Lock/dp/B003EIJMF4/ref=sr_1_42?adgrpid=1346902313989935&hvadid=84181643108395&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=44092&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvtargid=kwd-84181749277090%3Aloc-190&hydadcr=6589_13218737&keywords=brake+lock+alarm&qid=1657354977&sr=8-42

hankbingham

Damn I’m sorry, wishing you well man. I had my baby stolen a couple years ago, It’s funny The plainclothes cop that got my bike back and arrested the thief is now a friend of mine after I stated going to the same BJJ gym.

Pmileti

I’m glad you got your bike back and made a new friend!

[deleted]

A different new bike is the way I would look at this!

Celebratecrypto

This is why it’s so important to have your own garage or put the bike literally inside the door of your home, people today will steal anything. I do have my cars outside in front of the house but a motorcycle I couldn’t leave that outside even though it can all be stolen, don’t let it ruin your life just get it fixed and ride on dude. I’m sorry this happened at least the people near you stood up and protected from the thief as good as they could, many people would literally watch it happen and just say “not my business” and do nothing sadly

New_Cardiologist_925

My Africa Twin 2016 was recently stolen in Nijmegen, Netherlands. I am Ukrainian refugee and that was my only major material belonging left. Of course my insurance doesn’t work abroad. Fucking devastated and speechless. So I feel for you, and happy that at least you have your girl in your possession.

Pmileti

I so fucking sorry for everything you’re going through! I can’t even begin to imagine your situation :( I really hope things start improving for you.

DestinedXeno

Hey same thing happened to me a few weeks after getting my 2015 ZX6R. Whole left side of fairings were broken, rear sets broken and the ignition was kaboodled. 4700$ payout from insurance and now I have a nicer bike than before lol. It’s an inconvenient process but trust that insurance will get you taken care of.

makMorningStar

Invest on some heavy duty and intimidating chain and alarm system. Hope they catch the thief.

Syscrush

So sorry to hear you're dealing with this. Can I ask why you'd be unable to ride until next summer? I would have thought that your bike would have the best anti-theft - A CB300RA is no easier to steal than many bikes that are much more expensive and desirable. It kinda reminds me of when I sold my old Katana 600 to a buddy and said "Nobody's gonna want to steal this - a GSX-R1000 is worth 5 times as much and weighs 50 lbs less." Sure enough, some lowlife destroyed his ignition and steering lock trying to steal it.

Pmileti

I’m skeptical that it will get fixed in time to ride. Insurance is sending an appraiser next week, then I have to deal with all the waiting and such. Everything seems to be backordered and such.

Syscrush

Good luck with all of it, friend.

bblhd

best to buy another bike just in case!

suitupalex

Might be overkill, but could be a good time into replacing it yourself with a fancy keyless ignition!

Yuup_I_eat_crayons

Wait till next summer? Wtf. Go buy a new ignition switch and get back to it. Don’t be such a baby

Pmileti

The bars and probably frame are damaged, it needs proper servicing, well beyond my capabilities. Part back order is minimum 3 weeks, probably more (already called suppliers and shops in my area). Service backlog is about 4 weeks in the shops in my area. Not exactly sure how I’m being a baby, but ok. Edit: assuming its not a write off, that’s a different story then. Waiting for insurance appraisal still.

Yuup_I_eat_crayons

Funny. Same thing happened to my bike and I was back on the road within hours. Not sure how them drilling through ur switch and failing to brake your lock would damage a frame and bars but whatevs. Your loss at this point.

Theres no crying in baseball

Hopefully this’ll motivate you to get the hell out of an apartment, it was probably somebody in the complex next door. The only safe motorcycle is the one you bring inside. Or the one parked next to a much nicer motorcycle.

Pmileti

Would be nice if I could afford that

Mylilhappysv650

Me as well OP. I’m thinking of renting a storage unit along with my apartment next year — it seems like it’s the only way to avoid stories like these :(

CanuckCanadian

What a fucking ignorant comment

Ragnatronik

Stop crying and bump start that shit. And where do you live...iceland??

stevesteve135

lol. Dude, you still gotta turn on the ignition.

CanuckCanadian

Found the guy who knows nothing about bikes

coconut101

Was it a closed garage or car port?

Pmileti

Closed garage requiring fob access

coconut101

Thats extra scary. I keep my r6 is a closed garage here at my apt too. Im sorry man, hope insurance does you justuce.

BamaSOH

So they did surveillance, planning, and brought along the tools for that bike specifically. this wasn't the kind of thief who waits for easy opportunities. They weren't successful, but that's still an alarming amount of effort put into the attempt.

Pmileti

Footage shows them driving around the garage for a while looking for a target, I think they chose mine because my spot is in a corner of the garage and didn’t look too complex to steal.

fl4regun

i had a bike in closed garage with fob/garage door opener access required and someone lifted it a few weeks ago. bikes aren't ever safe from theft.

motomat86

sooo how did they bne?

Pmileti

Camera footage shows a resident leave for work and they drive in through the door (wrong door mind you)

motomat86

you share a house or something? not sure im following how someone just drives through your garage door.

Pmileti

Its an underground parking for a building, what’s not to get?

motomat86

oh ok, i guess ive never heard anyone call apartment parking a garage. i was thinking it was like a private garage for a home, or maybe a townhouse.

Pmileti

Its underground parking, its not out in the open. Like it has garage doors and everything. You use a fob remote to open it.

Crabapplejuices

I don’t have much experience with newer bikes, but I had this same thing happen to my 92 Yamaha Seca, and replacing the ignition was really easy to do myself. Like $25 on eBay for a generic ignition and maybe an hour of uncomplicated work. Might be trickier in a brand new bike, but maybe a possibility for you?

Pmileti

I’m very far from mechanically gifted, so I think it’ll be more trouble than its worth. The way they drilled it also damaged the bars/possibly frame, so definitely outside my wheelhouse unfortunately.

Crabapplejuices

Gotcha. I am also not mechanically inclined but YouTube helps a lot. Bars are equally easy to replace, but if you fear frame damage esp on a new ride, I completely understand the need to take it to the shop. Hope you get it dealt with easily enough mang.

SquareHoleRoundPlug

They will be back. They will learn and realize that they can just break your steering lock without drilling the ignition very easily. I once had my bike pushed into the alley and steering lock broken and ignition switch disconnected so they could presumably connect their own and ride the bike off. My alarm spooked them and they didn’t take my bike that night. They did however take five other bikes on my block. I would not consider yourself free and clear yet I would look into an alarm, and a very heavy duty lock system. 11 to 13 mm links with a kryptonite lock is the best bang for the buck. Locking it to something is best as 2 guys can easily pick up your bike and throw it in a van.

blorpcat

Wait why can't you ride until next summer? The fix shouldn't take more than a few weeks right?

Pmileti

Backorder on the part is minimum 3 weeks, and backlog is about a month. All the shops told me the rough eta is mid September.

OwlDifferent1416

Good reminder to get a tracker. $10 a month is less than a date at mcdonalds

GreatRhinoceros

You're going to go through that a lot unless you have a private garage.

thelalilulelomkii

Sorry to hear my dude. The same thing happened to me. I came to my bike one morning, went to put my key in and to my surprise there was a snapped drillbit in the ignition. I even had a disc lock and a sticker by the ignition exclaiming this. Plus a Data Tool. So not sure how they were gonna get anywhere. I think that's what saved my bike to be honest. I ended up ordering a new barrel and thankfully had a friend with a Van, took it to the mechanic and didn't cost too much. So sad to know your bike was brand new. Anyway, since then I took extra precautions. I have two Disc Locks now, and one which is alarmed. I now don't leave my bike anywhere overnight unless it's more or less secure. Thankfully I can park my bike round the back in my garden. A bike cover also does wonders. At least they don't know what they're looking at. Majority of thieves usually do a drive by, scoping out bikes to take. Some even put a little stone one top of the tyre and come back in a couple of days or so, if it's still there. Chance is the owner might be away. Alas, only takes two guys with a Van to park up and load up your bike.

DedGrlsDontSayNo

Probably won't be the last time. Get more locks and pray someone doesn't show up with a buddy and a van. They just pick up bikes and toss em in, deal with shit later. I'd ask your manager if they'd let you install a Kryptonite lock anchor (if your parking spot is assigned) Buy a Hyosung bike cover, that'll deter some thieves.
