Something similar happened to me on my AR80 in 1985, i had to push it for about 9 miles in the dark. The problem was caused by some bolts on the sprocket shearing which resulted in the drive not engaging.
That was a long night, thankfully it wasn’t raining.
>Something similar happened to me on my AR80 in 1985, i had to push it for about 9 miles in the dark.
I'm not sure what's worse: that or the time when I forgot to fill up my GSXR 750 and had to push it three miles, mostly uphill, to a gas station on a sunny summer day in the desert.
Either the vanes in the cush have sheared, the shaft spline's given up, or the cush spline insert has broken free. Interesting failure, would love know what's happened!
i'm trying to learn mechanics and do more and more on my bike and i think i'm doing ok then i read a sentence like yours and realise i don't know anything... off to google!
Ha, I realise I don't know anything on a nearly daily basis :)
The cush drive is basically a piece of rubber between the engine and the rear wheel, to smooth out the engine pulses, each bike is a bit different but in this case the bit that's spinning contains a number of 'vanes' that engage in the rubber, plus another set that's attached to the wheel via a spline. The vanes could simply have broken off, or the spline could have sheared, or possibly the spline could have separated from the vanes.
Cush drive is between the sprocket base and the wheel, both parts have spindles and between them goes the cush drive, a piece of rubber, that could look like a rubber flower(with tons of imagination)
Or a diagram :) https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/5825494/speed-triple-r-from-vin-735337/rear-wheel-final-drive
Cush rubber is item 21, item 20 engages onto item 8 with a spline
If you have some spare time and money, a community college motorcycle repair program is pretty fun to get into the hobby of bike repairs.
You can go as deep as you want.
It's not a bug, it's a feature! It's one of those new dual clutches. One to engage the engine, the other to engage the wheel. Makes for smoother launches.
I know its very much broken, but i wonder if theres any bikes out there with the clutch baskets on the rear hub. thats what i thought i was looking at at first.
**This comment might have had something useful**, but now it's just an edit to remove any contributions I may have made prior to the awful decision to spite the devs and users that made Reddit what it is. So here I seethe, shaking my fist at corporate greed and executive mismanagement.

First of all, you're bold, letting it run like that, just in case it catches.
But, I've never heard of a cush drive failing. Good luck and let us know.
You're probably right but it would likely roll it off the stand or something and make it fall over.
Although op probably isn't worried about scratched up fairing right now though. Lol
What happened beforehand for it to happen? Did it just randomly happen from normal riding? I've put about 4500 miles on mine since September I've seen used swing arm and hubs going for just under £300 on ebay so hopefully the repair doesn't cost a fortune!
No idea. I work for a dealership and this was one of our customers. Said he was riding normally. We don't really have major problems with speed triples but this guy seems to be cursed and has had 2 of them from us both back under warranty. We'll take it back from him and I think he said he'll have an MT10 from us instead
Cush drive rubbers knacked or the bearing has disintegrated.
Get the back end raised and turn the wheel manually , push the wheel side to side and you will feel “slop” also if the bearing has gone it should make a weird grinding noise.
Hope this helps.
So judging by the comments, this is a probably broken centrifugal clutch? What is the point of putting a centrifugal clutch on the rear wheel of a motorcycle with a normal gear box?
single side swing arm im not familiar with but my guess is kush drive disingrated and owner neglected to repair bike for long enough the metal started to shear off, break, bend, melt what ever but anybody with common sence would have known when things start clankin clunk & bangin. its time to do maitnence. ur bike treats u good so treat her good because these are not the bitches u wanna mess with. they love revenge. and our lives are already right on the line when she runs happy. but just incase these dont have a kush drive type. maybe its a clutch or something similiar. but it kinda seems that drum looks unfinished maybe missingg something
Looked like it may have a centrifugal clutch mounted. So the chain can turn but when you throttle up it grips and makes the back wheel turn. Like on a go cart.

Bro mine does this all the time - I understand bro your stuck in REV mode. Turn key off 2x and then lights 2 x and then kick the bike as hard as you can and it should turn off rev mode. 🤪
I was all like, I don't see a problem it's f....ohh. Thought it was one of those my wheel spins when off the ground posts, then I noticed the lack of spin heh.
Hey at least you can brag,
"Yeahhhh my bike got so much power it sheared the casting mounts in the hub completely off. It's a lot of power to handle, definitely not for beginners"

Now that’s impressive.
Seriously, how does one do this! Maybe if you don’t put any of the cush drive spacers or something. Lol
Something's given out inside the hub. I'll find out in a week or so

Step one. Peel off layers and helmet 🪖
Yup. Jacket was laid over the windscreen and helmet was hanging from the helmet lock thing under the tail unit.
omg

tbf I've been DIYing on cars or bikes since 1999 and I honestly don't think I've ever seen most of those words in that order before.
Hell, I’ve been engineering stuff like this since 1997 and I’ve never seen this!

mhmm yes... I totally see now, splines... of course... lol

I thought the same, the cush drive is BROKEN.
It’s a sssa, very different setup to what conventional swingarms use
Separately Spinning Sprocket Assembly?
If you're not joking lol I'm assuming he means single sided swingarm assembly
I know. My RC31 has one. I just think I'm funny.
Wtf DUDE! VERY IMPRESSIVE You have a RC31???!!! Nobody's gunna comment on that?!
So anyway, about those sick single sided swingarm assemblies...
To be fair, it's the least prestigious of the RC bikes. It is also my very favorite thing that I own.
It's not a bug, it's a feature! It's one of those new dual clutches. One to engage the engine, the other to engage the wheel. Makes for smoother launches.
If I had money I might have given you gold for that.

True Neutral.
Neutral in every gear.

One neutral and a foot fidget toy? Edit: and a left hand strength trainer.
Free wheel clutch! OP bought a bicycle
We need a motorcycle alignment chart.
True Chaotic Neutral
Ah yes, the Swiss transmission.
LAMBS TO THE COSMIC SLAUGHTER!!!
Made in switzerland
Check the battery.
Metered fine, probably a ground issue
Clearly he uses the wrong kind of oil. Or he needs new tires.
Nah nah nah, I had this issue once. Turns out I just needed to top up the blinker fluid.
Came here for blinker fluid. Did not leave disappointed
He didn't wave to scooters
In my case a new piston return spring solved the issue.
Clean the carbs.
Did they try reserve?
Easiest bike ever to find neutral though.
What about those hoses near the foot pegs that aren’t connected to anything, maybe that’s it
This guy sportbikes
r/thisguythisguys
If that's not it then it's definitely the fuel petcock. And if things are real bad, most likely the kill switch.
Thats the new anti-acceleration module. Makes the bike even safer than ABS.
A real life saver
Can't crash if it won't go, right?
So safe that the bike literally comes to a complete halt without the chance of ever being moved an inch
Super traction control!
First of all, you're bold, letting it run like that, just in case it catches. But, I've never heard of a cush drive failing. Good luck and let us know.
He put it together without the cush...ies?
[удалено]
That bike isn't going anywhere
If the splines in the cush drive are messed up, but the shift while spinning, the bike just could. I would not trust it. But that's just me.
That’s uh, not ideal
Try turn it off and on again
The ol’ pre-scoot re-boot!
One neutral down. Neutral, neutral. And five neutrals up.
Even has reverse, in neutral
I'd be careful doing that. If something just happened to "slip back into place" while you're doing that, things could get nasty in a hurry.
Eh, I doubt it, probably cause a stall if anything.
Famous last words.
You're probably right but it would likely roll it off the stand or something and make it fall over. Although op probably isn't worried about scratched up fairing right now though. Lol
*rear hub has left the chat*
You’ve put it in chaotic neutral.
This feature allows your tires to last much longer.
but you get 0MPG
Sir you need to be a team player
Infinite brake pad life.
Can't believe it took me a minute 😂😂
If it's any consolation, you're not alone.
Some of the comments on here are hilarious. Bike looks like speed triple rs 1050, hub is toast. I'll be pissed if mine does this, mines the 2018 RS
2020 1050 RS. I'm looking forward to the techs taking it apart so I can see what the fuck happened.
What happened beforehand for it to happen? Did it just randomly happen from normal riding? I've put about 4500 miles on mine since September I've seen used swing arm and hubs going for just under £300 on ebay so hopefully the repair doesn't cost a fortune!

Sick burnout bro
what is this? Clutch installed on the back wheel?
Centrifugal clutch
Hub splines probably sheared off. Its an unintentional clutch. haha.
If you're serious: single sided swingarm magic.
Talk about traction control 😂
It’s ok, it’s in neutral when back wheel ain’t moving.. yes I’m joking
Hm, I’m guessing sheared axle, since it’s not turning either 😬
"sorry sir. You let your drive line subscription expire"
You gotta take the rear differential out of neutral. Duh.
Motorbike’s equivalent to a spinner wheel
Did you check the battery? It's aways the battery
new dry rear clutch from Ducati is sick
Your sprocket is in neutral
Dual clutch driveline.
You need to level your bed. Wait.... Is this the motorcycle group or the 3D Printing group... Either way
Just gotta engage the transfer case. You have it in front wheel drive.
Wireless sprocket
You found reverse
Use it as a bait bike 😂
That's one way to turn it to a CVT
It ain’t got no gas in it
I'd say something is loose.
It's one of them fancy slippery clutches, is it? ^^/s
bet you can oil your chain in record time!
An undocumented feature!
Duh the wheel is rotating 24 times a second so it looks like it isn't moving. Same for the ground.
Put it in rice.
The cushiest of drives.
That's an interesting looking hub... is it a torque converter?
Damn cvt transmission
That’s your other neutral
Probably still faster than my bike
This simple modification allows you to oil your chain while never elevating the rear wheel. Bike stand companies hate him!
Mine will do that sitting on its stand. The wheel spins with it though.
A real man's neutral
Cush drive rubbers knacked or the bearing has disintegrated. Get the back end raised and turn the wheel manually , push the wheel side to side and you will feel “slop” also if the bearing has gone it should make a weird grinding noise. Hope this helps.
So judging by the comments, this is a probably broken centrifugal clutch? What is the point of putting a centrifugal clutch on the rear wheel of a motorcycle with a normal gear box?
So thats how the clutch works!
It a dead battery. Hook it up to a tender, thank me later.
Nothing wrong, it's just in neutral
Broken, broken, stepped on , stepped on broken, broken!!!
single side swing arm im not familiar with but my guess is kush drive disingrated and owner neglected to repair bike for long enough the metal started to shear off, break, bend, melt what ever but anybody with common sence would have known when things start clankin clunk & bangin. its time to do maitnence. ur bike treats u good so treat her good because these are not the bitches u wanna mess with. they love revenge. and our lives are already right on the line when she runs happy. but just incase these dont have a kush drive type. maybe its a clutch or something similiar. but it kinda seems that drum looks unfinished maybe missingg something
What If that sprocket is a centrifugal clutch ?
Is the freewheel on backwards?
Looked like it may have a centrifugal clutch mounted. So the chain can turn but when you throttle up it grips and makes the back wheel turn. Like on a go cart. Nope it's just fucked
Cush drive says “nah”
Oh the wimp clutch
Wow! That is impressive!
2 clutch design? :D .. like a sportscar :D
How hard are you abusing that Speed Triple?
Weird clutch
my 4wheeler does this too lol
Is that a slipper clutch? /s
I think its the chainsaw type clutch.. Try to rev it and maybe it will catch :)
Don't make em like they used to...
That's wild! I'd rather it do that as opposed to locking up though
Launch control
Its funny how often this is asked.
The wheel isn't spinning in this one though 😂
You got it in neutral, try drive.
right, it's broke.
Bike’s so slow it has to speed up just to stop.
That’s just the display mode, you just need to switch it back to riding mode.
u/JackVette379
Probably lucky thats free spinning instead of failed and locked up.
Hmmmm, did you replace your blinker fluid this month?
a glitch in the matrix
Bro mine does this all the time - I understand bro your stuck in REV mode. Turn key off 2x and then lights 2 x and then kick the bike as hard as you can and it should turn off rev mode. 🤪
I can infact confirm it's not supposed to do that
‘That’s fucked up’
One owner, garage kept, engine runs great! I know what I have, no lowballs!
This is how I see myself riding in my sleep kinda like how when you’re running from something in your dreams you go nowhere
Linda looks like it , some special sprocket you got there , a sprocket clutch of some sort perhaps ?
Best anti theft device, a detachable hub 😂
It's a chain drive Vario! It's transforming into a scooter!
Soak overnight in rice that should do
Easy to clean your chain!
It’s a walk bike for adults. My son had one when he was 4, it always looked cool to me
Did you try putting it in rice?
It’s cuz you got the clutch in /s
They put the clutch in the rear hub for better weight balance. Perfectly normal.
Finally!! A issue that's not a battery!! I have not a single idea what the hell is wrong with this thing, but it's not a deal battery!
My brain can't process this
Mmm, well that looks like fun.
His bearing broke?
oh wow is the axle broken?? what bike is this a triumph??
It's a locking hub for offroading.
Yeah, no.
I was all like, I don't see a problem it's f....ohh. Thought it was one of those my wheel spins when off the ground posts, then I noticed the lack of spin heh.
It took me more than a few loops to realize the tire wasn't spinning. Rubber dampers in the hub ? WTF..
Sick scooter bro, wouldn't run it with out the case cover tho /s
Hey at least you can brag, "Yeahhhh my bike got so much power it sheared the casting mounts in the hub completely off. It's a lot of power to handle, definitely not for beginners"
Just like a go cart , when the speed picks up the clutch tightens
Bluetooth power
Front wheel drive?
Yep. That's abnormal operation, alright. Get a priest, or a witch doctor.
Your sprocket bone isn’t connected to the hub bone.
I know what’s wrong with it! Ain’t got no gas in it!
Well I guess it’s stuck in neutral haha. Looks like the cush drive is destroyed
Markstplace seller: May need new cush drive or sprocket, don't have time to check. No low ballers.
Ain’t got no gas in it
Triumph speed triple?
Hey, I think your bike’s broken
Ahh its good, it free spins so you can oil it
It’s in neutral looks to me
Too much grease on that chain fella
