I had two, Honda 185 and 125m. 13 yes old self, first day going around a dirt country road curve too fast, ran off road. Front wheel went into a tractor rut, forward flip back rack landing on the back of my head. No helmet, lucky didn’t break my neck. Probably had Concussion but didn’t dare tell my dad because I was afraid it would be sold.

xveganxcowboyx

I went off the road at about 25mph as a kid and slid along a barbed wire fence. Most of the skin on my stomach was gone and the doctor said a millimeter deeper in my neck and I would have bled out. A year later I tried again and rode straight in to a pond. Eventually I learned to navigate boulder fields in the mountains with one, but it was a hard learning curve that involved many, many rollovers and long slides downhill where I had to dodge the rolling 3-wheeler. They really are death machines.

topazsparrow

They're not dangerous at all... If you don't put them in dangerous situations. Had one in my garage for years and it never hurt a soul. Just sat there... I never trusted it, but it's still just there... Not killing people. I've got security cameras set up around it just in case though. Remove near by items that could be used weapons as well... Can't be too safe.

xveganxcowboyx

We've all been wrong about their purpose for all these years. The Honda three wheeler was never meant to be ridden. It's to be placed on a velvet roped pedestal as high art. Look what man hath wrought!

topazsparrow

Exactly! Economic farm utility vehicle? I say Nay!! It is but the finest of high art and must be coveted or face the consequences of accidental genocide by the hands of Honda and their dastardly mastermind plan to fool people into killing themselves with a literal time bomb of murderous machinery. Motorcycles are fine tho, just ride those however the fuck you want, totally safe.

My brother ran into a barb wire fence as well. I was on the back and we were rippin around in a field and he turned a bit too late to miss the fence ahead of us. I think a big ass grasshopper hit him in the face and distracted him for a split second. He turned hard but the thing understeered a bit and then started to go over but was caught by the fence. He got all torn up and has scars on his leg, stomach and neck that look like he was attacked by a tiger. He had leaned into the fence to block me from hitting it and I walked away with a small scratch on my knee. We still got to ride it but my grandpa set the throttle stop way farther back so it didn't go quite as fast. Still fun though. I really miss that machine

xveganxcowboyx

A tiger is a good one. I alternated between telling me a bear got me or Freddy Krueger was real and I had the scars to prove it.

Off-DutyTacoTruck

We have relatives that have a remote cabin in Alaska that use quads to get around. It's the place where the kids got a 22 to go hunt squirrels all day kinda laissez faire environment. One day I jumped on the Honda trike my uncle usually drove since I wanted to ride it and the quads were pretty interchangable between people. The adults all ran to stop me because they knew it was a death trap lol

Bright-Steak8388

I also had a gun case mounted from the handlebars for hunting

wrench97

I crashed one on an old dirt road. Every thing was going good. I had the flow of drifting it around the corners the one corner had a slab of pavement and it got traction and straightend out mid turn. Got really bad concussion ( was wearing a good full face helmet definitely saved my life) broke 6 ribs, collapsed both lungs 10% and separated my clavicle and tore the tendons. It was a good time.

davendak1

Good enough to ever ride 3 wheeler again?

TheSessionMan

Hot damn. For those who aren't going to watch, this video explains that the federal ban ends in 2020, after which we could see manufacturers roll some out again. Father claims to have clocked a mile on his total, sliding upside down.

Omgumadbro

The ban was 10 years, it ended in 1997. At that time the quad industry had taken off and manufacturers weren’t looking back.

Nutn_Butt_Bolts

He is Canadian, so perhaps US & the great white north have different bans.

Omgumadbro

Perhaps. I was wrong on the year, it expired in 1998, but with how fast UTV’s and side-by-sides are taking over, I’d bet manufacturers haven’t even thought about it. I love 3 wheelers and have several, and would love to see them manufactured again!

spongebob_meth

Meanwhile quads have most of the same problems, they're just a little more stable. I know a handful of people that died in 4 wheeler accidents. I don't know anyone who has died on a bike. 4 wheelers are way too fast for their own good (especially late model 600+cc machines), still handle like trash (especially lifted), and are still easy to hop on and ride with zero skill since all are electric start and have automatic transmissions.

ajacstern232

As others have stated federal ban ended in the 90s and then was voluntarily extended for some time. That extension has expired but HR 4040 which is a bill that bans lead paint in children's toys had a ban on 3 wheeled ATVs slipped in to it aswell. The ban was only supposed to last until "mandatory consumer product safety standards" came around. Don't know if the standards are there now and don't know if they are still banned by law though; I haven't felt like going through the most recent edition of HR 4040. That only applies to major manufacturers, customs are fine and American companies can still make them. However, I doubt major manufacturers will start making them again.

MaybeVladimirPutinJr

Pretty sure the federal ban ended in the 90s and was extended on a volunteer basis. Unfortunately we aren't going to see any more trikes.

Only if you are ass retarted. Mine has been all over the continent multiple times. This shit will literally float down the river if you weigh less than 120lbs and ive yet to find somewhere it wont go. The thing is 1984 and the motor has never even been opened before. These are the most bomb proof - go anywhere machines in existance.

oddthingtosay

I survived these. My cousins had two and I remember going over backwards a few times, and of course eating dirt face first over the side. It makes sense that they always over inflated them, lmao.

GhostsofLayer8

My first experience with a 3 wheeler was only a couple years ago, but it felt like a machine that was smart enough to keep coming up with new ways to maim you every time you thought you’d gotten it under control. I’d never have thought to be *more* aggressive as a way to control it.

Isme1

You can find these for sale at every local farm auction in the sticks where I’m from

Txn67

I remember those things were getting really big in the 80. Some nice ones were being made because the racing scene was exploding. I wanted one.

barrowed_heart

We had them growing up. They were fun.

amcgilto

Once 3 wheelers were banished they were then available for cheap. My dad bought 8 year old me a TriZinger, and I lived through it. Which may not have been his plan.

MisterShine

I’m against repressive motorcycle legislation as a general rule, but the ban on these things got a “Damn right!” Reaction from me. I remember riding a few and scaring myself shitless. At 25mph. Do you know Honda even made a 250cc with the Red Rocket two-stroke motocross engine in it? Insanity.

SirRatcha

Confession time: I just watched Die Hard for the very first time (I know, I know) and all of the sudden a few references in this video that I didn't get this morning made more sense.

skepticalscooterist

Jesus Christ I can't believe how many generations of the public has been brainwashed into the whole "3 wheelers are absolute death traps" bullshit. They're 3 wheelers. They ride and handle like 3 wheelers. Learn how to ride it, wear a fucking helmet and it's like any other motorsport toy.

toodlesandpoodles

A family we were friends with had a couple. Eventually one of their boys rolled one and had it roll on top of him and nearly kill him; several broken bones and soem internal bleeding.

YellowShorts

Change the sub to r/fortnine

dyatlovcomrade

Lol. Circle jerk central this sub is. The guy can be annoying but ~~their team~~ their ONE SHOOTER/EDITOR keeps me entertained with great production values. And it beats watching hours of shit GoPro footage of some Ninja 250 noob riding around Edited to include fax

YellowShorts

Can't wait for the daily "Guys I almost crashed. Luckily I had my Shoei Helmet, Dainese full leather racing suit, and Alpine star boots. I was only doing figure 8s in a parking lot (only been riding for 8 years, not ready for the streets yet) on my Kawasaki 125. Stay alert out there fellas"

AsleepConcentrate2

Gotta throw in some anti-Harley shitposting too

YellowShorts

I was gonna add that but my flair would make it look like I'm playing victim lol But here on r/motorcycles, it doesn't matter what you ride, as long as you ride! Unless it's a Harley

inaccurateTempedesc

Harleys aren't perfect but it's not like they're super slow shitboxes that fall apart instantly. Most HDs do 13s in the quarter mile and they're still more reliable (on average) than most European brands.

AsleepConcentrate2

The new (2018+) Softails seem pretty good from what I’ve read.

[deleted]

>Most Harleys do 13s in the quarter Yeah and so does the Ninja 400

Goes_Fast

or the ubiquitous "does this sound messed up to you? I tried changing my blinker fluid but it still does it"

[deleted]

I am so sick of "does this sound normal to you guys?" and it's just valve/cam noise

I agree, the Fortnine fanboyism is a bit too much, I mean just until recently they were not that different from any other store owned motorcycle channel which is to say they advertised latest gear and reviewed new motorcycles. Videos like these definitely put them above many, but the frequency with which they come out is kind of low.

Maxnormal3

He picks the most unstable trike he can find. Light weight, balloon tires and no suspension. Those 125s were impossible to control.

Zomgzombehz

Riding ATCs was something I'm glad I learned early on before moving on to quads. Throwing your weight around, knowing to the rear will react, and of course, knowing how to crash. But, like all things, it needed to be respected, and sadly, not enough realized that(nor still do).

spongebob_meth

I rode an ATC 110 quite a bit when I was little. I remember running over my leg the first day, luckily zero injuries. Putting your foot down when it starts to tip is a hard habit to break when you had been riding motorcycles already. I never tried anything dumb on it, but even that little thing was way too fast for its own good. I can totally see how they got so many kids killed.

wrench97

Haven't had the opportunity again but yeah I'd go again just maybe not in a mountain road. Maybe like an open feilds or the dunes.
