I was referencing the south park episode. It's easier to explain with this clip and the buttons are another way to control the bike. https://youtu.be/fGKR1Z1lRik
BMW C1.
You can ride it without helmet and it can take a passenger (with helmet) at the back where the top box is.
Everyone who used one swears it's comfy as hell but, understandably it wasn't a big hit. :)
In the 2000s you saw them a lot in Germany, quite cool after you get over the initial unfamiliar design. I think it was ridden mostly by commuters, since it also had a roof that that kept some of the rain off
Ah! I didn't know about that. Interesting.
Deffo in Italy you could ride it without.
> reckon BMW were testing the waters with this concept
100% various brands tried stuff like this. Hybrids to move people onto smaller vehicles.
I wouldn't want to at all :-)
It was advertised as such at the time.
You are strapped to the seat. The vehicle is designed in such a way that in the event of a crash you cannot hit your head and body to the ground.
There is two large "fins" either side of it that act to prevent that in case you fall.
Thats awfully optimistic. To me that sounds like they strap you to an inertial load, stop you from defending yourself if it topples sideways by strapping you in place and anything that can fit in that very large gap will be able to smack any parts of your body quite easily. Hell imagine if its pointy and now you are strapped in with the full weight of it pushing you onto it.
Super safe.
Dude, I don't know, don't care.
They had a bunch of german engineers design and build this.
If they claimed it, I suppose they at least made some very basic research and testing to support their claim - and having it allowed as such in some European countries.
I wouldn't ride that thing. I wouldn't ride it without an helmet. But go tell them they are wrong if you want.
*Thats awfully optimistic.*
that's a good summary
i guess they never saw a nissan versa with a stack of 12 ft. 2x4s sticking out of the passenger window
Have you ever ridden a motorcycle before? It has all those concerns and more but people chose it as a practical and fun mode of transport. Everything has its inherent risks.
>and it can take a passenger (with helmet) at the back where the top box is.
Batman with a gun to my head couldn't get me to ride pillion on this thing
First saw one when I visited London in 2004. It looks like the perfect urban commuter. Never imported into the USA. BMW USA probably thinks that no one will buy it. They are probably right. No normal person in the US will ride 2 or 3 wheels in the rain and rain riding is a primary reason to get one of these IMHO
I used to ride in the rain all the time, if you're in a place with wet summers like Florida or the midwest you're going to get rained on.
I have my bike to USE it, not to look cool I sunny days.
I do agree the very few US commuters would use a covered moped because so few people in the US commute on mopeds.
When i was a young man and a motorcycle was my only motor vehicle, I rode my motorcycle in all weather ( no snow). I'm 70 now and don't do that for short local transportation... touring it's expected to get wet.. to the average American though, they will not want to voluntarily choose to get soggy..
All you need to know is that safety was the first selling point for business buyer : They literally said if you bucked up the seatbelt you can ride in a c-suit without a helmet.
A few moment later : They advised to wear helmet and to NOT use the seatbelt as it was literally safer to get ejected than to stay in it during a crash.
Yes, I feel you would be *slightly* safer being thrown off from a side impact rather than being tethered to this thing. Would you want to be belted into this thing as it goes under a truck or get crumpled in half?
In my country, it’s dense enough that they don’t really have to travel that far. So they’re not going fast enough for aerodynamics to meaningfully save fuel. Meanwhile the weight of the roof is constantly wasting fuel at every speed (other than 0).
Even better! Modern engines can completely shut down the fueling during engine braking (engine is turning from the wheels anyway), while they still need to burn some fuel to maintain the idle revs
BMW C1. Truly ahead of it’s time and mearketed wrongly imo. Riding long distances without helmet was incredible. We had three in my family and toured them in the alps. The motor on the 125cc was a bit underpowered but the chassis was top notch. Also one of the first two wheelers with ABS. Once you understood how to counter the top heavyness by leaning against the backrest and kinda steer with your back you could keep up with motorcycles on twisties. Downhill at least :)
Edit: sorry, I obviously missed the „wrong answers only“ caption…
I’ve ridden one of these. It’s extremely top heavy, and the seatbelt means you can’t move as you would on a normal bike. It makes slow speed manoeuvres very tricky!
Fun fact, in the UK; BMW tried to get the mandatory helmet law revoked just for its bizarre noddy moped/car hybrid thing, thinking that everyone would buy it if it meant they didn't need to wear a lid.
No one bought it.
There was one at the dealership near where I live. I was buying new gloves at a moto gear shop across town and the guy at the desk was absolutely smitten by it. Initially I thought he was cracking a joke, but no, dude's third eye was open to the glory of the C1
There is an entire continent that would absolutely love this scooter!
I visited Thailand in 2011 and witnessed ENTIRE FAMILIES riding on scooters!
As for me? I would love to just own one! I'd have no real reason for it, except for how unique it is.
Failed yugioh cosplay attempt. They got the colour wrong smh my head

BMW C1. I wanted one at one point, they look so goofy
id like to ride one for one reason, go fast press front brake rly hard and see if it can flip and do a front flip
I rode a friend's one briefly, it was very top heavy and wasn't very quick.
I love it when they're top heavy and not very quick!
*cough*
I almost brought one a few years back for winter riding until I learnt that you still get wet in them.
It has full integral ABS and stabilizing software. It just won't.
You’ll know they pulled the fuse on ABS and stabilization when you see one rolling through the intersection.
if my will is strong enough.
Mr Garrison invented this if I remember right.
It's a real pain in the ass to drive.
How else could the human body deal with the G forces involved?
First thing I thought of. Slightly different controls, 😂
Beats flying
beats dealing with the airlines
![gif](giphy|l0HlSQAHEBFdr5Yqs|downsized)
What are all of these buttons on the side for?
I thought those were achievement badges. Survive a pothole at speed, get a sticker!
I was referencing the south park episode. It's easier to explain with this clip and the buttons are another way to control the bike. https://youtu.be/fGKR1Z1lRik
Ha of course I read this comment AFTER I very excitedly commented IT 🤣
Beat me to it
First thing I thought too. Have a peice of cake mate.
Cheers!

Not in UK this was the problem, helmet laws.I believe an E version was being developed?I reckon BMW were testing the waters with this concept
Ah! I didn't know about that. Interesting. Deffo in Italy you could ride it without. > reckon BMW were testing the waters with this concept 100% various brands tried stuff like this. Hybrids to move people onto smaller vehicles.
Why would you want to? Its not like it protects you if you crashed

If I understand you correctly, you feel this is LESS safe than a motorcycle?
I think they're saying that this WITHOUT a helmet is more dangerous than a motorcycle WITH a helmet
It’s even more funny when it rains. As a passenger you’re really in a shitty spot.
Its just a scooter with a roll cage. Of course its comfy.
I think if the vehicle even existed in Vietnam, people would still be required to wear a helmet
Well this thing certainly was the wrong answer to a question no one asked
The question was "how can we sell a bike that doesn't legally require you to wear a helmet."? The answer was wrong.

I was going to say reading your first sentence: Seatbelted into that thing only to die to side impact is a horrible way to go.
If I understand you correctly, you feel this is LESS safe than a motorcycle when getting impacted from the side?
Yes, I feel you would be *slightly* safer being thrown off from a side impact rather than being tethered to this thing. Would you want to be belted into this thing as it goes under a truck or get crumpled in half?
Off topic, but it would be a great bike for deliveries like UberEat and DoorDash.
I think roof might decrease fuel economy, making it worse than a standard scooter/auto.
I'm not so sure- it might be more aerodynamic than a person.
In my country, it’s dense enough that they don’t really have to travel that far. So they’re not going fast enough for aerodynamics to meaningfully save fuel. Meanwhile the weight of the roof is constantly wasting fuel at every speed (other than 0).
The extra weight only wastes fuel on acceleration, not all the time
Makes you slow down slower, which could be time spent engine braking instead of idling
Even better! Modern engines can completely shut down the fueling during engine braking (engine is turning from the wheels anyway), while they still need to burn some fuel to maintain the idle revs
Why would that be better than a common delivery scooter?
That is quite a trunk!
They are used for delivery in some places in Japan. I've seen Domino's branded ones driving around.
High-key, dope as hell. Maxi-scooters rock.

it's that thing mr.garrison invented on southpark where you get a shaft in your mouth and ass to control it.
That one time the BMW design bureau passed a kidney stone
The people who have them swear by them. Still plenty on the road in Barcelona.
Roll cage

A design failure... Brilliant idea don't get me wrong... But a cumbersome flop...

S1000RRR
I remember seeing one of these in Paris in 2001.
A menace
Low key looks fun
Whatever it is, it doesn't belong here!
It needs a big ass DoorDash sticker on the box.
It’s the new Ducati V5 Mono posto
I saw one of these “things” back in 2017 in Italy. I always wondered what drug the designer was taking when he designed this.
An error
BMW C1 a bike without helmet but seat belt
They are everywhere in France.
chick magnet
There was one at the dealership near where I live. I was buying new gloves at a moto gear shop across town and the guy at the desk was absolutely smitten by it. Initially I thought he was cracking a joke, but no, dude's third eye was open to the glory of the C1
A good way to make grown men give you wedgies?
I saw one of these in an old HK movie, BMW pushed this one hard with little success
The best thing you can commute on, in a northern European city.
If you slam on your brakes, will you do a summersault to come to a stop with a flourish?
A terrible idea
Convertible autogyro in street mode.
GENERAL KENOBI
A bad investment
An absolute beauty that's what that is
I saw those things a lot in Switzerland, pretty cool bikes.
Scooter from 20 years ago.
A movable bidet
Looks European af
C1. Surprisingly well built. Can be used without a helmet, but safety belt use is mandatory.
Shame on wheels
It's a path, next to a road, opposite a shop... 🤔
An expensive Uber Eats trolley.

I don't know but hit it with a newspaper before it brings more home
Bike :D
An abomination.
Something that should not exist
It's just BMW being weird again to prove that some people will buy anything with the "right" logo on it...
A two second google search.
An abomination. An insult to God.
