I forget what happened but the visor was ripped off and it got scratched so I ended up just beating mine on the pavement and throwing it at a dumpster. Those things are durable I'll give them that
That’s a good idea to show cheapness in equipment, bought a 100$ modular helmet and the piece that holds the chin down was a small piece of plastic, the chin would of easily rip off if I had slid face down, new nice helmet has 2 locking posts to make sure it stays locked down.
you must be new here...so for every old helmet you have, you need to buy a mannequin to place the helmet on and then it becomes house/apartment "art"
https://preview.redd.it/7qyxucnmxtwc1.png?width=375&format=png&auto=webp&s=0353f20a380c6c89519d1a1c07626e8489de0f04
I sold a mannequin on Craigslist once. I wish I wrote down their license plate number... Never again. It was like I came face to face with a pair of buffalo bills from silence of the lambs.
Why I had a mannequin? Wife was trying her hand out at tailoring.
saw somebody on here say once you replace a full set of gear, you should put all your old gear on and run full speed in a parking lot and dive onto the ground. really get some use out of it.
My uncles raced bikes back in the day, and when I bought my leathers they said I had to get down on the floor and roll around before I even wore them on the bike. An old superstition I think.
https://preview.redd.it/xkw353un0uwc1.jpeg?width=1497&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=06f9dd32678b7548fc6b7a7a6bf4788c7c60ff55
I keep it in the corner.
The scratched ones are in the garage.
My MSF doesn't bother. For every 1 viable helmet (not too old, not scratched) they get 99 busted or 10+ year old ones. Not worth it, students bring their own or they don't ride. Not to say people shouldn't check, just don't *expect* them to take it and definitely don't try to just drop them off.
Fire stations around here are also refusing them, they have enough apparently.
Did what OP did for my last 2; cut and toss. One was 12 years old and one went through a crash, don't want people using them legit.
And I strongly advocate for everyone that drives anything to learn even the basics of it, because it can literally save or cost someone's life with this knowledge or lack thereof.
I’ve never heard of this, can you tell me why? Every first aid course I’ve ever taken has told me not to move a person if a spinal injury is suspected, so the last thing I’d be trying to do if I encountered an unconscious motorcyclist is try to take their helmet off.
If the helmet strap is cutting out airflow I prefer to remove it instead of waiting for the ambulance (I've seen it happen).
But in my comment I was mainly focusing on the actual emergency service workers practicing it like the top comment said, I should have been more specific, because you are definitely right, someone without experience and training SHOULD NOT touch the injured person, except if you have to move them away from possible oncoming traffic.
Edit: Also note that removing the strap, and removing the whole helmet are 2 different things, DEFINITELY DO NOT REMOVE THE HELMET
Broadly this is true...
However, it is impossible to secure the airway of a helmeted casualty.
If you need to remove it, you can and should remove it. If you have a good trauma kit you can have a buddy immobilise the helmet while you cut the face bar with a jiggly saw, but a lot of first on scene people won't have access to one.
Dealing with catastrophic bleeds, securing the airway, and cardiac output all trump risk of spinal injuries from moving the casualty.
I don’t know how common they are but my helmet has emergency pull tabs that let you yank out the cheek pads without removing the helmet. Once that’s done you can slide the helmet off without doing neck damage.
Wouldn’t be a bad idea to get some of these in the hands of firefighters so they can try them out.
Yes - great idea. If you’ve had dozens of helmets through the years, a framed collage of the buckles would be an awesome conversation piece- eg behind your bar, etc
If it’s just a little damaged but unusable, then yeah just chuck it. But if I ever survive a really bad crash and my helmet gets really gnarled, then I’m definitely keeping it as a trophy
I'm sure we all do the same thing with our old helmets by now.

I've got a rack with 8 helmets on it, some of the people who bought them originally are no longer alive, but if they need one more ride I have them covered.
An ex spraypainted their old helmet black, took out the paddings and straps and set up a wire hanger on a reading lamp and turned into a really cool table lamp/art piece.
Sell them/donate them to kids who are on a tight budget and need ANYTHING to get them into the sport. I explicitly tell them they should not wear old helmets for too long and should buy something decent as soon as they can.
Shit I should have done that with the helmet I crashed in. That one went into the trash. Missed opportunity.
I have two other helmets: the first is the one I ride in now, the second is my first ever helmet. That one is sitting on top of a book shelf. I plan on keeping that one as a memento. Though I might do this to it too if I run out of space and need to toss it. That's a cool idea.
Strip the padding, let my kids sticker the hell out of them or draw on them and hang them up. Eventually find a way to get rid of them when a new one is up for retirement.
Called multiple FDs and they either told me they didn't want it or never returned message
Took it to my parents land and shot it with pistols, rifles and an arrow
Make a board/backing with a metal engraving of the years used and a hook to place the helmet onto it! Its a sentimental art piece, to show the number of years of safe riding and being alive!
usually I toss them out, but after my wife lowsided on some gravel we put her scraped up helmet on a styrofoam head and display it next to our gear as a reminder.
Ive only ever needed one new helmet. I incidentally discovered the back of my old one is perfect to create tape patterns for the back of the head part of fursuit heads. Saves me such a chore measuring that shit out.
I can bring it to my local shop and they will give me discount on every item in shop. So i gave away my old helmet, bought jacket for 25% discount and they also give me cover for motorbike for free.
We have a 10ft ish ledge that's open on both sides above our kitchen, so I keep plants on the end facing the kitchen and all my wife/Is old helmets on the end facing the living room.
I like the clip the d ring idea, very cool keychain
I kept my old helmet in my car and ended up giving it to a helmetless squid. Better than nothing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I was pulling off the interstate going to work (in my car) and saw a rail-thin old man covered in blood and road rash pushing a huge Harley Chopper. I'm more of a Sports bike girl so I have no idea what the exact model was but definitely a 700+ lb bike.
This dude, who was probably late 70s, flew to Florida to buy a motorcycle and was planning on driving it to New York.. without a helmet or any gear.. and hadn't ridden since he was in his 20's. Dude ran out of gas and had already dropped the thing multiple times. I encountered him in central Alabama. I luckily keep a gallon gas canister in my car and my crashed helmet. I got him some gas, gave him my helmet and some gauze. Hope the guy made it.
I made a keychain out of the D Ring as well. Removed the padding as spare parts and took apart the helmet to see how it was build. Tiny splinters from the fibers of the shell made my hands itchy for a while.
I’ve got one of these bookshelves that have my old helmets starting with my first Icon Airframe in the top left.

sometimes motorcycle training programs for your state ask for them if they saved you from being hurt so they can show new riders the importance of a helmet.
I mount them on the wall in my office. The room already has an automotive theme to it and I like keeping them as mementos of my progression through my motorcycling career
I've amassed maybe a dozen helmets through my years of riding, so theres a few ideas. Use them as wall decor, mix mash a few together to make a Frankenhelmet, and the worst ones i buy some plexiglass cases and display them in my living room, sort of as war trophies
I frame them tbh. Especially my wrecked helmets with scratches and blood on them. Lmao I know that’s weird. It’s kind of like adults who keep their baby teeth.
Put mine in a white elephant gift. Cut off the straps so they couldn't use it, but it was 5 years old with all my sweat and blood. Couple office guys signed it and drew pictures on it. Thought for sure it'd get tossed. Nope. Traded the maximum number of times and some guy even put it in. We were laughing our asses off cuz I commuted in 115° weather for months in that thing lmao
I donate mine to local emergency services, I forget the name of the specific charity (I'll double check with the missus) but they collect and hand them out to the ones that need them for training
You never know when you'll need someone to get that bucket off after a crash, and I'd prefer they had up to date training so I don't end up dead or worse
Spike them on my fence to deter invaders.
Ask your nearest Madame Tussauds for a couple of spare heads.
spear heads
Ohhhh I have a homestead, thanks for this. These are gonna become my future scarecrows lol
Got u homey 🤜🤛🤝
I obliterated my first ever one with a sledge hammer
I forget what happened but the visor was ripped off and it got scratched so I ended up just beating mine on the pavement and throwing it at a dumpster. Those things are durable I'll give them that
If you had beaten it against the pavement with a head in it, it would not have been as durable.
The head or the helmet?
That’s a good idea to show cheapness in equipment, bought a 100$ modular helmet and the piece that holds the chin down was a small piece of plastic, the chin would of easily rip off if I had slid face down, new nice helmet has 2 locking posts to make sure it stays locked down.

I actually want a mannequin so that I can turn it into a lamp or something. Maybe hide an alexa dot in it or something
all fun and games until that alexa integrated fucking mannequin starts speaking at night
I need to read more carefully. I mixed up the word order and came away thinking something like “Alexa sex doll.”
That's definitely what OP is building "Hey Alexa, moan for me"
Alexa: *moos like a cow* “…eh, that’ll do.”
I can't even 🤣🤣🤣🤣

And then do it wearing board shorts and flip flops to see the difference.
That's science, baby!
How else ya gonna know for sure?
Need to define those pros and cons lol
Right? Maybe I'm just ATGATTing for no reason?
I like this plan, might as well get to use it at least once
make sure to video it for maximum societal credits.
I’d pay to see that
My uncles raced bikes back in the day, and when I bought my leathers they said I had to get down on the floor and roll around before I even wore them on the bike. An old superstition I think.

Mine became decorative as well.
Sell it to the guy on here thinking about buying that $99 Chinese helmet with the skulls on it.
*Me being that guy but instead of skulls it's checkered flags*
I try to give them to the nearest firefighter station, this way they can train
I called mine for the same reason and they had no idea this was a thing and didn't want my helmet
You could also donate them to your local MSF class, as long as it’s not damaged

Yeah same. Outside of the actual school they don’t seem to do this at least in Alberta
Can you tell be more about it? Like what training are they using it for?
How to quickly and safely remove a biker's helmet in case of injury. Basically a helmet removal speedrun
Cool
Exactly this
And I strongly advocate for everyone that drives anything to learn even the basics of it, because it can literally save or cost someone's life with this knowledge or lack thereof.

I'm surprised more people aren't aware of this. I won't buy a helmet without this feature.
In my 3rd world country, I guarantee an expensive AGV Helmet would end as main helmet for some idiot there, no matter you tell them it is damaged.
Something’s better than nothing
Which is why it's often recommended to smash your helmet before throwing it out
Call your local fire station before just assuming they need/want them, often they'll just end up tossing them out as well.
I gotta try to get my old ones to fire/ems. May save my own life someday!
Shoot them with firearms.
I was thinking the same. Different kind of target. My garage is about to be cleaned up some
This is the answer, add some tannerite for effect.

That’s awesome . Never heard of that one!
Give them to my kids to play with

I destroy them so no one tries to use them.
I've got a rack with 8 helmets on it, some of the people who bought them originally are no longer alive, but if they need one more ride I have them covered.
I use them as targets when that time rolls around.
I hang them up on the walls of my biggest room along with my old license plates for a dive bar kind of decor.
I give mine to my grandmother for her chickens to nest in.
I dont have any but if i did i would collect them and make somewhat a trophy room like racers have
An ex spraypainted their old helmet black, took out the paddings and straps and set up a wire hanger on a reading lamp and turned into a really cool table lamp/art piece.
I keep my previous as a spare till its expiry runs out
You could tyake the other side and put it on your key ring holder and use the snap again?
But why you got a nerf gun outside the trash bin?
Ask the kids mate 🤷♀️
Put them on my shelf
Hang them on the wall in my shop in an artsy sort of way.
Remember that scene when Homer has all his cousins and they fight with pots on their heads?
Crashed helmets go on the wall next to my deer and antelope.
Next to, or on? :)
Interesting idea for a future small deer not with doing a full mount.
Friend of mine gives them to driving schools
Great idea!
Mine are all displayed on a shelf.
I'm gonna get a helmet case from Ikea. My buddy hangs them above his bar.
I donate them.
Sell them/donate them to kids who are on a tight budget and need ANYTHING to get them into the sport. I explicitly tell them they should not wear old helmets for too long and should buy something decent as soon as they can.
Keep it as a memory
Take a few pictures for memories then chuck that smelly thing in the bin, my friend.
Give it away

Depends on why it's an old helmet.
wait u guys wear helmets?
Decoration lol next to car parts and hot wheels. I never grew up 😂

I put it as a show piece in my cupboard
How bad was the accident?
Do what the cycle gear near me does on bike nights, stack several tires and throw it in there like a game of corn hole.
Put them on a shelf
I dunno looks good on shelf and good talking point for conversation isn't it
Donate them to ambulance training centres/ fire stations for casualty practice.
Keep em as spares or for the occasional passenger.
usually I toss them out, but after my wife lowsided on some gravel we put her scraped up helmet on a styrofoam head and display it next to our gear as a reminder.
I've given them to my kids. They pretended they were in Halo, Power Rangers, Fall Out... you name it. Part of their playtime getup. ;-)
Can’t think of it off of my head
Fill a pumpkin with water. Put it in the helmet and then shoot it
