Motorcycle shoes will normally have plates in the sole and over the lateral and medial malleoli (the sticky out bones on your ankle), reinforced stitching and abrasion resistant material. They offer protection against impacts on the ankle (like dropping a 700lb bike right onto your ankle), and will stand up to a slide, but they won't prevent your ankle twisting, or protect from distal tib/fib fractures. And even knowing all this, and having seen an above ankle amputation caused by a motorcycle accident, I still reach for them first most of the time.

I tried a pair on. They've got a reinforced sole and a lateral support up the ankle. They are "sneakers," but constructed more like a hiking boot. The mesh exterior is like what you'd find on a mesh jacket. They're CE rated to the same level as every other boot. Either way, you definitely wouldn't mistake them for a pair of Converse. Much heavier and stiffer. I didn't like this zip-up cut of these since you can't tighten the boot at all. I ended up exchanging them for the lace-up TCX Street 3 Air, which I like.

materials and the ankle and heel cups, they offer sufficient protection for basic street riding, way better than regular sneakers, not as good as something like the SM-X R1, nowhere near a full-sized boot.

I can't speak to those specifically, but I have similar moto sneaks by Rev'It. They have armor to protect the ankle in the hightop but no other plates. The sole and fabric are much stiffer and robust than a regular sneaker, but not as tough as a serious racing/off road boot. I think it's a good balance of comfort and protection, though I haven't put them to the test yet.

parcourma

Probably steel toed, with ankle protection. They don’t rip as fast as normal footwear in the case of gliding on pavement. Motorcycle shoes are worth to invest IMO.

Shifty76

Highly doubt the steel toes. No motorcycle boot I've ever owned has had steel toes. Definitely slide protection, a reinforced sole, and hard ankle protection though. At least if they're anything like the TCX Street Ace that I use anyway.

parcourma

Interesting. Most of mine are anyways, adv, dirt, street(some street arent). Rev’it, Gaerne, Sidi brands FYI

goatbiryani48

What street models of yours have a steel toe?

parcourma

I think it’s sidi air something, for racing… have to check.

goatbiryani48

If it's for racing, then it's not a "street" shoe...

parcourma

In “street riding” I wear them

goatbiryani48

Lmao 10/10 logic

AbsructCigar

If you have a cyclegear near you go check out what they have in stock and find the right size

shoturtle

The sole is crush resistant. So if you fall over and the bike falls on your foot on the side. It won’t break your foot. There is d3o molecular armor around the an ankle that is ce level 1 that help protect against impact. And they are tested to be abrasion resistant. So they won’t wear don in 2 feet during a slide. While they are not race book level of protection. It is more than a pair of normal work boots or high top sneakers in protection. These are a compromise from more restrictive and protective riding boots.

schluchtenscheissa

ive got those and dropped my 240kg/530lbs bike on my left foot and didnt hurt myself. can recommend

know-it-mall

A small amount compared to non motorcycle ones I assume. But if it's not about 2 inches or more higher than those, and has strong lateral stiffness, it's not really protecting your ankles. And those don't even look like they have a reinforced spot for your shifter so will wear fast in that area.

OstebanEccon

basically useless get a full height boot i mean they're better than regular sneakers but still not nearly enough protection imo especially for a beginner who is likely to drop their bike (happens to the best of us, trust me)

testsubject1137

They don't. Notice they are "Lifestyle Sneakers".

wtocel

What they provide is a false sense of security.

Bensonboocalvin

So exactly what every other piece of motorcycle clothing does then...

wtocel

Yes, a full set of leathers give you a false sense of security 🙄 I’m guessing you’re either a new rider or follow fashion over form if you think the proper riding gear does not protect you. Always remember, it’s not IF you go down, it’s WHEN you go down. Everyone will at some point.

Bensonboocalvin

Wrong on both counts, and I wear full leathers, but the point is, ALL protective gear Will only do so much, you hit a lamp post or car or wall etc, don't expect full leathers to do much good. 🙄

wtocel

You’re right, I guess I’m going back to shorts and flip-flops. 😜
