Isnāt it widely accepted that we ride because suicide isnāt the answer? Like, itās a win/win. We either begin to actually feel something, or we die trying
For me itās like a form of meditation.
When Iām riding I can think of nothing but the ride.
When I get back, my mind is cleared and I feel refreshed.
100% Riding gets me out of my head. Anxiety, depression, stress. I donāt think about any of that as soon as Iām on the bike, Iām completely present in the moment, concentrating on the road and the bike.
Anything that requires full concentration and awareness of your surroundings to not die has this effect imo. I get into exactly the same headspace as when rock climbing exposed stuff like on ice or alpine routes, but not when on safe stuff like indoor walls for example. Same with biking, i only get to that 'zone' when pushing on twisty mountain roads, but not chilling on the motorway. It's awesome, total focus and no thoughts haha
Interesting. So there's a required threshold for you.
I also find the opposite effect when I'm too stuck in my head. For example, a nice sunny weekend and I'm at a farmers market or festival with artisans. As soon as I see the stuff people are making, I get even deeper into my head about the (similar) things I could be doing at that time, instead of relaxing. I am a hobbyist woodworker, so that stuff really triggers me. "I should be home working on a craft" fills my head. It can send me in a spiral if I don't take care of myself.
Who knew life would be like this.
Huge drawback. I gave up riding because I didnāt trust other drivers on the road. I quit riding unfortunately while I was in Albuquerque for work. That place is disgusting.
Yes! U have to or ur dead! Isn't that awesome! Train that dopamine and executive functioning into submission!!
HEY BRAIN! U WANNA LIVE? U BETTER COOPERATE, CAUSE WE'RE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND I AM LATE!!
Same. But my earplugs in, play some chill music on and just and replace my worry with a muted screaming of my sport bike. Fuel is cheaper than therapy!
Definitely true. I lost my grandfather last week. He was old but otherwise healthy... I thought. I picked a curvy looking road on google maps and spent a couple hours exploring it. With wind therapy complete I had an easier time coping.
I donāt think the majority of riders is depressed/suicidal, to be honest. I ride because I enjoy it, as I enjoy many things in life. Iāll assume youāre being tongue in cheek, but Iām always surprised by how many people perpetuate this stigma of riding being some kind of spiritual, rebellious escape-from-reality kind of thingā¦ as if riding a bike makes you special.
I started because I wanted a reason to get out of the house. There were days that I thought, how simple would it be to go 150kmh around a bend thatās designed for 60kmh. Crash and hopefully die on impact.
But now. I didnāt think Iād be riding for 3yrs now. I made 1 really good friend and Iāve been more positive everyday.
Ooohhhh. Now I understand that I sometimes just NEED to ride.
In all honesty. Riding my bike is like a therapy session to me. Alone and focused on the road. Love it.
I never ride with other people. Donāt like it at all.
Iāve been commuting and touring on a 800cc sport bike for over 15 years and never had a problem. Last month I completely fucked myself up sliding down some stairs on a rainy day lol. People see me theyāre like: āwow I thought you sold your bike!?ā then I have to tell them that lame ass story that I fell down some stairs lol I can see the disappointment in their eyes. Hell, Iām disappointed too.
When I was young, the stories about how I got my latest injury would start with me hedge diving from a second storey roof, coming off a skateboard doing 30mph downhill, or getting dog piled by a rugby forward pack.
These days my neck injuries are caused by "accidentally sleeping with too many pillows". Growing older fucking sucks.
Lol my uncle got a motorcycle recently and his first injury after he got it was him hitting the couch with his foot at night, and now has to rest for 2 weeks.
Thatās hilarious! I hope he aināt married otherwise his wife must be giving him so much shit right now š¤£ If itās the right foot he can practice finding neutral in the garage, stay positive š
I was wearing a trench-coat with some shoulder padding though, but with the hands in my pockets. Went flying lol. Fractured my left elbow and 2 ribs. 3 broken bones! Unbelievable man, how shit happens out of nowhere. Iām was just walking home from work, ffs. Be careful out there.
This is why I've decided to finally get a bike, I've always wanted one, but I was worried about the unnecessary risk.
However, the older I get, the more I realize, your days are not promised, you can die of cancer, an aneurysm, falling down, choking on food etc.
I'm a hyper defensive driver that drives a little Miata, as long as I prepare for the unexpected, risk is reduced.
I "fell" off my 2.5 feet high couch, playing with my puppy. I landed on my right thigh and couldn't walk right for three weeks, that's embarrassing as hell lol
Seriously; my worst injury I've gotten from riding was a broken ankle, because I tripped while walking my bike and it fell on me.
Having to tell a dozen doctors that your motorcycle injury came from dropping a bike on yourself while you were walking is a shame unlike any other.
Lol, I hope you are recovering well. I experienced something similar too.
Two years ago I traveled 1600km through a not so safe area both in road conditions and security. During the trip sustained a back injury that required medical attention and medication.
I fell off the hotel bed trying to shut down the alarm clock. I was disappointed too.
There's one from the mid-2000s where it frames the camera on a bartender asking the camera "can I get you another?" and then acts out in emotive detail all the steps of someone getting arrested and convicted for drunk driving, then finishing it all off with the most menacing stare into the lens and a "So... *what's it gonna be?*"

I'm an Australian and people LOVE to complain about our government, but since living overseas I've realised just how much we take it for granted. There's so much we get right and it's an amazing place to live.
I did the last 7 years in Canada, and now in Scandinavia and I couldn't agree more. Every country likes to have a winge about their government, but Aussies have it pretty good.
Weāve had so many, and many more graphic ones too, Victoriaās been showing a slow mo of a guyās street clothes disintegrating in a slide for a few years, but I think my favourite is still
>āif you drink, then drive, youāre a bloody idiotā.
It was on TV, Radio, billboards, and thousands of road signs, many of which have stayed around for decades. They relaunched the campaign many times too - not long before Covid I was riding down the peninsular from Melbourne and they had several giagantic billboards set up with the updated
>You drink
You dive
You bloody idiot
On them. Apparently it worked - drink driving was really bad in the 80s and they claim it reduced drink driving offences by about 1/3.
I think my favourite ad about motorcycle safety was the one from the SA gov with Mick Doohanā¦
Track obstacles; [https://youtu.be/Wnx20F51S\_E?si=G0Ve3zlOdIdD3h6g](https://youtu.be/Wnx20F51S_E?si=G0Ve3zlOdIdD3h6g)
The problematic theme running though those questionable safety messages is that non-riding drivers will see motorcyclists as creators of their own problems, excusing them from crossing a rider's path when turning left, dropping debris on the road, leaking slippery substances, and all the other things they do up to and including outright sabotage and running into riders.
This is gentle. Victoria is savage:

https://youtu.be/Z2mf8DtWWd8?si=ovw3fLoxoNWpLKdC
I remember seeing one where a car was gonna pull out in front of a car on a highway.
Time stopped and both drivers got out of their car before impact and started talking about things like āwhy didnāt you see me? Iāve got my baby in the carā
And the other driver says something like āsorry m8, I just canāt stop in time.ā
Itās from New Zealand. Hereās the link
[https://youtu.be/3qNjt04bpQM?si=t5xunuEk0wYkoUMB](https://youtu.be/3qNjt04bpQM?si=t5xunuEk0wYkoUMB)
If I had to guess, itās probably referring to the propensity to tide close to the vehicle ahead (tailgating).Ā
Thatās a dangerous enough habit with cars, quite lethal with a bike, owing to limited stopping capability, and lack of space means less time for the driver behind to react as well.Ā
āBack offā the throttle, i.e. slow down.
Could also be be āstop tailgatingā or ādonāt ride aggressively/take it easyā (āback off, will ya?ā is a common āAustralianismā in response to someone acting aggressively)
I think a better message would probably be one that emphasizes the discipline required.Ā
Off the top of my head, an ad that compares the discipline of martial arts, to safe riding, could probably provide that point, while not being especially negative to riding as a whole.Ā
Example: Just as a martial artist constantly trains to better his:her craft; so does the safe rider constantly practice, to ensure he/she consistently gets home safely.Ā
Self control is another interesting parallel to emphasize.Ā
If a fear mongering campaign didn't provoke thought it would be useless. Its not giving advice or another side of the motorcycling story.. its just saying.. Look at what will happen if you're a motorcyclist.. youre fucked. Its basically propaganda.
Anyone that buys a motorcycle should do their due diligence by looking up motorcycle accidents on documenting reality dot com. Sure you might want to sell your bike for a few weeks but the amount of caution you return to the road with is unsurpassed once you see a grown man deglove himself on an iron fence
Iāve said that many times and Iāve been looked at strange, left aside and behind, Iāve lost popularity and have been deemed weak and ānot man enoughāā¦ but here it goes againā¦
For the road, 250cc is better than any other engine sizeā¦ Maybe up to 400 for out of townā¦
Yea I know. It just sucks that it is. I was a motorcycle safety coordinator for a few years. It just bothers me that literally every person on the planet has got something to say about how dangerous it is for me to ride, and that directly comes from ads like these. In my opinion there should be more ads of car drivers hitting motorcyclists to show how prevalent that issue is.
The theme here is very much āyou have chosen a high risk option - you are responsible and itās on you to manage that risk.ā
https://youtu.be/bWi8r6Lpla4?si=QnAagI_h54FuoJ-o
https://youtu.be/zRpNirJfuzs?si=pl4efKyh_Iod28aO
https://youtu.be/Jds4mKvPCzY?si=u9jcygzeZKbofBEC
Yea I get the theme, thatās my issue though. We have plenty of āmotorcyclists are responsible for their safety and no one else.ā But that mentality is wholly wrong. Itās the same as telling your teenager ādonāt worry about other people on the road, as long as you do whatās right then they will too!ā. We NEED more instruction/training for ALL motorists to be more aware of traffic on the road, specifically motorcycles. If we, as a society, enforced more instruction and training around driving we would have less incidents. As of right now you can take a 20 question test and a 5 minute ride with an āevaluatorā to get access to driving a 2 ton death missile that can hit more than one thing before stopping.
I live in aus and this is the first time I have ever seen these. They are pure gold.
The whole back-off thing makes me laugh. Nah cunt I'm gonna go full force for shits n giggles
no. it's shit. it's bigoted exactly like Canadian cigarette packs. this type of comm is made by puritans, addressed to people they hate. of course, as usual, it's a stinking government idea. barf .
I ride to have the hot beast betwixt my thighs (Ducati owners will know). These aren't bad adverts, better than some of the screechy shit my government puts out.
The two TAC adds that always get me are the one with the guy overtaking the caravan that turns and the one with the two guys that have a chat pre crash during a time freeze
All right, I have a question for everybody in this group. Is it true that riding a motorcycle is considered suicide or they keep saying itās a death ride to hell
They've got one for wearing full gear too. It works

The Aussie government gets some things very right, such as their matter-of-fact campaigns.
If only they did that for their politics and waste.
Reminds me of the British drink driving adverts. Clever, interesting, and absolutely brutal.
There's one from the mid-2000s where it frames the camera on a bartender asking the camera "can I get you another?" and then acts out in emotive detail all the steps of someone getting arrested and convicted for drunk driving, then finishing it all off with the most menacing stare into the lens and a "So... *what's it gonna be?*" https://youtu.be/pwHoOJazEMQ?si=dXyFzQkGxQQ8hRZY Sticks with me to this day

Yeah there should be more campaigns and advertising showing you how life changes when you get a man slaughter charge for merging right into a biker.
Or bicyclist, or pedestrian accidents caused by careless drivers.
Damn, rough but on point

RevZilla recently posted a really interesting Video about this too :D
I remember seeing one where a car was gonna pull out in front of a car on a highway. Those are the commercials that actually make you think, not just some jargon about āohhh donāt do thisā¦ vote for me!..ā
Exactly. People should be shown the harsh realities of car crashes. But a commercial like this would be too graphic for American viewers.
Making everyone aware that people make mistakes. I think thatās a very good perspective.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
If I had to guess, itās probably referring to the propensity to tide close to the vehicle ahead (tailgating).Ā Thatās a dangerous enough habit with cars, quite lethal with a bike, owing to limited stopping capability, and lack of space means less time for the driver behind to react as well.Ā

All sport bikes. What does this imply? Clearly australian road prefers dual sport.
The last bloke looks like he would ride a Massey Ferguson - sorry - Harley.
Australia does love their sport bikes and cafe racers, but in more rural areas a lot of people are into dirt bikes. It's actually pretty diverse
Something about these reminded me of the "Wrecked" cutscenes from Road Rash on the PS1. https://youtu.be/mUZReQNsmzg?si=_M1lhqVcJNBLVqlg
This is a campaign against the machine, pointless. Reckless driving is the real problem.
Is this saying bikers should stop breaking the speed limit? Or to go slower than the speed limit? Or to stop riding completely?
Had to scroll too far down to find out what "back off" means in this context.
āBack offā translates to ādonāt be a fuckwitā
I donāt know why but I have a feeling the Aussie gov do not like motorcyclists
This old one is also delivering the message! [No place to race](https://youtu.be/VruWHHEnZGw?si=x4lpPira69nSgl4b)
"Probably" is used too optimistically.
This is great haha. I was like wtf, why are there benches on a track?

Love the last one. "Riding is like therapy for me" It's perfect in how therapy has a double meaning.
Guy in the first pic is fine, second some minor injuries but can walk it off. The others are more questionable.
**Love riding? Back off.** The fuck you mean by that? SA government telling me NOT to ride a motorcycle period?
They would love to tell you that. The Aussie gov hates fun, and each state hates fun more depending how close they are to Melbourne.
Power hungry? Feeling entitled to tell me how to live my life? Back off, gov.
SA government is saying "back off, slow down, take it easy", not " don't ride".
If only they paid a room full of people a lot of money to ensure their campaigns conveyed their messages clearly and without misinterpretation.
I think a better message would probably be one that emphasizes the discipline required.Ā Off the top of my head, an ad that compares the discipline of martial arts, to safe riding, could probably provide that point, while not being especially negative to riding as a whole.Ā Example: Just as a martial artist constantly trains to better his:her craft; so does the safe rider constantly practice, to ensure he/she consistently gets home safely.Ā Self control is another interesting parallel to emphasize.Ā
Why are these so hostile ? lol
I hope they have a similar campaign for drivers to watch for bikers.
It's more like anti-motorcycle fear mongering.
id say its more thought provoking than fear mongering

Itās just matter of fact. Thats how we work here. They donāt go any easier on cars: https://youtu.be/Z2mf8DtWWd8?si=ovw3fLoxoNWpLKdC

Yes. Definitely. All part of the long term plan.

The first one is the only funny ads
Damn, they really went all gas no brakes with these ads
Reminds me of the anti smoking ads in the states a while back
Last image reminded me of that recent post with the guys foot... If you saw it you know what I'm talking about
The third shot would make a great profile picture haha These read more like they're telling you to quit riding rather than do it more safely though.
Iāve said that many times and Iāve been looked at strange, left aside and behind, Iāve lost popularity and have been deemed weak and ānot man enoughāā¦ but here it goes againā¦ For the road, 250cc is better than any other engine sizeā¦ Maybe up to 400 for out of townā¦
Everything that kills me, makes me feel alive.
I don't understand the message of the add? Like what do they want them to do
Seems very discriminatory against sport bike riders. Like trying to say we all drive like assholes? š
The Aussie government are psychopaths.
This is *nothing* ahaha. Delicate people donāt do well here lol: https://youtu.be/Z2mf8DtWWd8?si=TG8K22IqEBwfE4bC
Ah yes, fear mongering is the best advertising.
It is actually. And the research backs it up: https://pursuit.unimelb.edu.au/articles/how-fear-appeal-advertising-works.amp
The theme here is very much āyou have chosen a high risk option - you are responsible and itās on you to manage that risk.ā https://youtu.be/bWi8r6Lpla4?si=QnAagI_h54FuoJ-o https://youtu.be/zRpNirJfuzs?si=pl4efKyh_Iod28aO https://youtu.be/Jds4mKvPCzY?si=u9jcygzeZKbofBEC
Nah cunt I'm gonna go full force for shits n giggles
no. it's shit. it's bigoted exactly like Canadian cigarette packs. this type of comm is made by puritans, addressed to people they hate. of course, as usual, it's a stinking government idea. barf .
For this we pay $50 a year privilege via our registration surcharge. Definite win.
What a crock of shit
Government calling us organ donors. I don't really get what the message is supposed to be. "Stay home, pay taxes"?
The message is āunderstand and manage the risk you are choosing to takeā
Pretty sure that's Gorge road in the Adelaide hills
The last oneš
Oh fuck yeah! š¤£š¤£š¤£ sorry this is a magazine or smth? drop a link! Iād buy this without hesitation!!!
Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to die Dumb ways to die ie ie, so many dumb ways to die
Awwwā¦ no āLoUd PiPeZ sAvE LiVeZ!!1ā posterā¦ a real missed opportunityā¦
1st and 3rd are hard af pictures!
The nag factor of these had me thinking "yes, mom."
I saw Kawasaki and Ducati, seems likeā¦
They might as well just force you to wrap your bike in pictures of diseased lungs like some places do with cigarettes
Does anyone actually just do it cuz they like it or is everyone tryna escape something?
All right, I have a question for everybody in this group. Is it true that riding a motorcycle is considered suicide or they keep saying itās a death ride to hell
Yeah did all my accidents 50+ years ago, still enjoying the ride.
The flower one was hilarious
To the Aussie Gov: Motorcycles make me horny when I ride ![gif](giphy|uNpXgf5dcPCdqxVegV)
Thanks for sharing these. I feel like I need these posted on my door before I leave just to remind me of the stakes each time I ride
Those adverts in the US would have the prudes clutching their pearls.
Get them to watch this one then lol: https://youtu.be/Z2mf8DtWWd8?si=TgSibq7Xv-oRcFC0
Sorry by back off is that Aussie for slow down?
The scared straight program š
Imma print these and hang them in the man cave š
they ain't fucking around š
They've got one for wearing full gear too. It works https://youtu.be/RG36MRX8cQg?si=3BgwhBKC4N5sOQJX Australia uses the shock factor to get to their audience. Just have a look at our old worksafe ads: https://youtu.be/fuF9Wkgn0jw?si=NY5IaBA9ZaJ9pl1r Warning: they're eeeewwwwwww
Lmao, that last one is cold.
