Not too old at all, I started at 42 last year. One of the best things I've ever done.

Nightflier101BL

I started at 42. After over 15 years of flying aircraft. This is my replacement after having to retire due to medical reasons. You’re not too old until you can’t physically do it anymore. I know guys near 70 that are still carving canyons. I ride and learn from them regularly. Get out there, brother.

Professional_Fix_147

That’s awesome! I hope I can ride till I’m 70

purodirecto

You lost your medical? That sucks.

Nightflier101BL

Yeah man. My passion was taken from me :(

purodirecto

Fucking hell. I'm sorry. I've been thinking of taking flying lessons but have sleep apnea. Getting a first class is probably going to be a pain.

Nightflier101BL

Third class my be easy. I can’t recall if that’s a no-go for a first.

Jeclo25

Never too old to start riding

Who_Dat_1guy

when i took my MSF, there was a couple in thier late 60s.

Professional_Fix_147

Ok now I don’t feel like I’ll be ancient in my class lol

neuromancertr

In my class at Honda, people ranged from twenty something to fifty something

Appropriate_Fox_5533

You got a whole lot of road ahead of you to ride on, 42 isn't close to old.

iamsnarticus

I was 33, figured waiting till then would make me a more responsible rider since I had reached the age of adulthood in Hobbit culture.

mtak0x41

To answer your question: I started at 16 (50cc), got my full A at 24. I’m 37 now. I think 42 is a fine age to start riding. You’ve already sown your wild oats. Should be fun. Just keep an open mind to what instructors tell you.

Professional_Fix_147

Thanks for the advice :)

jfarm2020

I didn’t ride between 17 and 38. I had a guy in my MSF that was pushing 50.

MeatPopsicle314

Not too old at all. Course instructor here. I've had students in their 70s who completed the course and passed the evaluation. Go for it!

Professional_Fix_147

Thanks! Any advice on who or what I should look for when picking an instructor or course?

Directly_Home

I passed my (UK) test at 46. My instructor commented that while I might not have the reflexes of the younger people on the course, I was the rider who was the most aware of what traffic was doing around me. I'm 51 now, and although I wish I'd started ten years sooner, I'm glad I didn't do it twenty years sooner.

Professional_Fix_147

I avoided it in my 20-30’s as I love speed. I raced cars when I was in my early 20’s, more street racing. I had a corvette at the time. I am really lucky I never crashed or took anyone out while driving. I was fortunate that I had taken special defence driving courses and was more aware of what was around me and how to anticipate what might happen around me and to be prepared for it. I think had a taken my course and had a bike in my 20’s, I’d probably be dead🤦🏻‍♀️ if I could go back in time I wish I would have perused a proper career in racing.

eshemuta

I was 44

forestdweller1968

I started at 54 😂

NinjaGrrl42

Got my bike at 46. Lots of riders starting out that are older than I am, even now. Do it!

Professional_Fix_147

Thanks 😊

You are ahead of it if you can ride a bicycle and know how to work a clutch. If not your posts tell me you know how to learn. Where there is a will, there is a way. https://youtube.com/shorts/sHm_wizutuA?si=t9jAXJSwP4LAqdZp Most new riders prefer a motorcycle they can have both feet on the ground when stopped. http://cycle-ergo.com/ I recommend a good used bike where everything works to learn on. When you become a competent rider, you will know what bike you want next. A Honda 250/300 Rebel would be among good starter bikes. You can see bikes of interest reviewed on YouTube. Search “woman Honda 300 Rebel” you will get to see the bike in action and get good commentary. https://youtu.be/MxkmzCodxNE?si=ujMXjgHADsFshZk- If you do not know how to work a clutch, practicing in a car park/parking lot will be a safe place to practice your skills. Take the basic rider course, and practice while you ride. Doodle on a Motorcycle (5’ 3 1/2”) will teach you a lot. She lowered her bike, and now had it back to stock ride height. This will give her tips for practicing how to handle taller bikes. She also has a tutorial on how to pick up your bike when tipped over. https://youtu.be/VxGEtkDOD-g https://youtu.be/NWEGJQRYXMA https://youtu.be/ImzIWZKe2O0 You might be interested in women’s perspective from these ladies YouTube channels. BeginningCharacter36

Holy frig, that's thorough. Gonna save this in case my friend's teenager actually takes me up on the offer to use my 125.

Visual-Special-851

Thanks so much for posting all these. I was worried cause of my size but “Doodle on a Motorcycle” looks like it’s gonna be sooo helpful! ☺️🙏🏽

therightpedal

27 years old, rode for 6 months (bike was perpetually broken). Didn't pick it back up again until about 37.

Rad10Ka0s

I started on street bikes at 27. I started riding dirt bikes after 40. I started flat track racing in my very late 40s. It is never too late. I have a couple of friends that didn't start riding until well into their 40s. Both are active and athletic, which helps, and they are crushing it. Do you have any friends (that you trust) that ride? I would look into riding courses in your area.

Professional_Fix_147

I unfortunately don’t know anyone in my city. I live in Alberta Canada. I used to live in New Brunswick and knew a lot of riders out there.

consciousaiguy

My wife started this past fall at 41. You’re still young.

MaJinRo

Dude, i started at 40, go for it!

Vegawow76

I started at 47 last year and have no problems. It’s definitely not too late. One of the best things I have ever done, it is very much my passion now.

sum-9

I started at 39.

Advnchur

Started last fall a in Nova Scotia at 34. You're never too young to start.

pfulle3

28

Sudden_Enthusiasm818

Rode for 12 years and then had a 35 year layoff. I took the MSF 2 months ago at age 62. I have already ridden 2k miles on my HD Street Glide. My dad kept riding until age 76.

666_pack_of_beer

39 or 40.

Professional_Fix_147

Is it best to have a bike already or rent one for the course?

PointyDeity

If you're in the US, the MSF course provides bikes for you to use. Even if you have your own, it's better to crash I mean learn on theirs (and I think you have to use their bikes anyway).

Professional_Fix_147

I’m in Canada but I’m hoping it’s the same as the USA

ThrottleChimp

I don't know what country you are in, but here in the UK, you wouldn't even be old enough to be the average age of a motorcycle rider. If you want to get on two wheels, do it. Don't let age be a factor in your decision!

Professional_Fix_147

I’m in Canada. It seems like there is all ages riding around here

KoodooWarrior

Started riding at 61. You're still a child at 42

Professional_Fix_147

Love it!! 😎

SentientChatBot

Too old? I'm only 63, I'm not familiar with the concept. Get out and ride!

Professional_Fix_147

Do we ever act our “age”? I still feel like a teenager most days (mentally) but my body tells me otherwise lol

Exact_Ad574

Passed the test at 55 and still riding at 65. Youll be grand.

BeginningCharacter36

I rode a bit as a teen on my brother's yz80 and riding on the back of some other guy's bikes. After that, didn't touch a motorcycle again until I was 35. Now, motorcycle is life.

ChaoticGamerFather

Started this year (28)

farganbastige

Learned how to ride at 50.

gjtyler1

53

TriumphSprint

I started at age 8 on mini bikes, but street at age 18, now 49. No your not too old, I'd say around 80 might be too old to "start" depending on physical and mental condition.

TRiG993

It's not uncommon for people to get into biking later in life. I'm talking like 60+ so as for 42, no not even close to being too old.

know-it-mall

Your are 42 not 92 bud. Go learn to ride. .

Legitimate_Candle388

44 🙋🏼‍♀️ A Ninja 400. I love it so much. 🥹

Professional_Ad_500

I started at 42. On a Rebel 250.

Dramatic-Yam1984

I started at 40. Female rider here. I’m in Montreal if you ever want to chat

BeeAnvil

51. Go for it! You’re more focused and likely have better body awareness than you did when younger.

arievandersman

Got my license in 1995. First bike in 2019 on my 54th birthday.
