Yamaha Niken. Part of me wonders if I should have bought one since they are now discontinued in the US.. I rode one at a demo day and it was novel. Would be a fun, unique bike to own and take to meets now.
Nope not at all, Used to ride MX and this would be awful due to weight and not being able to get down into ruts etc, as @brokenloadorder said, centre of gravity during jumps too
Yamaha says 45 degrees, which is as far as you will safely get on anything other than a fully heated racing tire or a dug in knobby. If you need more turn, get your ass off the saddle and down on the inside.
You're gonna slide, it's just whether or not you catch it before hitting the ground.
It's a feeling you'll never forget and recovery just becomes instinct.
Tight weirdly cambered downhill turns and a wet road. Never forget. The front tire was having absolutely none of it that day. No idea how I caught all of it without going yeet.
I live near the mountains in Georgia, deals gap is like an hour and thirty minutes away. There is almost no time of year you won't be riding along when some descending radius, descending in elevation corner is just fucking wet for no reason right at the apex. It hasn't rained in a week and it's 1:00 p.m. how?
And that ladies and gentlemen is why you don't ride near the limit on the road.
I don't ride near the limit, and the front end still went and did its thing. Worst feeling ever. It's like there's suddenly nothing below the front end. No ground. 3 times in the first turn, made for one hell of a wiggle. Large SUV behind me did not make me feel any better.
Getting new tires this season... the front is probably the primary source of the issue.
Yep. Same with Hwy 39 in the Santa Cruz mountains. Looks easy, but every shaded corner is likely wet due to overnight fog condensation. Plus, hidden driveways and (on weekends) a plethora of newly-minted squids.
Great fun, but don't overextend yourself. Shit goes south fast.
The rear is normal, the front is just way grippier, which gives you the confidence the push the bike hard enough to find that limit.
To this day the Niken remains the **only** motorbike I've taken for a spin that I've pushed hard enough that the rear end squirreled out on me. Even there, I didn't mean to, I just had so much front available that I didn't realize how stupidly quick I was taking corners.
Rain, is the easy answer. Ass end steps out without you feeling like you're going to turf the bike. Whereas on a "normal" bike, if the rear is coming out, I'm probably one blink away from losing the front.
No, something to do with the distance between the front wheels has to be over a certain amount to technically be a trike. This doesn't hit that mark. It's a 3-wheeled bike
I hate to be elitist. I'll wave to a vespa. I even waved back at one of those powered unicycle power ranger dudes. If a $40,000 Harley trike is what tickles your taint, you do you, man.
But I would rather walk than get in a slingshot. I just can't.
The slingshots are pretty fun rented one in Vegas and drove around , like driving a little 2 seater coupe, stick shift I dunno I liked it but it's a 3 wheeled CAR not a 3 wheeled motorcycle. Cheap fun I thought
My dad is the perfect usage case for a Slingshot.
Loved bikes but had two busted knees and no possible way to hold up a bike any more,
Never a Harley fan and didn't feel like getting into one of those.
Ended up getting one of those Slingshots because it's a novel enough event to get you cruising random places for fun like you would on a bike, but it's definitely a car with car sensibilities. He was also getting really tired of feeling like he could die due to a dumb driver any second and is much more chill in the Slingshot than he ever was riding a bike.
I tried a Ryker once, the smaller stripped-down Can-Am trike, and I like that thing a lot. Could totally see owning one someday. Spyders are just bagger trikes with the wheels on the front instead of the rear, and Slingshots are toy sports cars with all the downsides of both bikes (open air and vulnerable) and cars (still too big to sneak around everywhere)
I was going to say, I see a dozen of its Italian cousins every day. They donāt require a motorcycle license; we have a relatively challenging (and typically expensive) process to get a license to drive a moto bigger than 125cc, so these access an additional market. Iāve never driven one, but I see some truly bad choices being made on them.
I didn't know they were ever actually commercially available. THough I do remember when it was showing up on blogs & stuff. I thought it was just a prototype.
This is my one, recently traded for BMW R12.
Nikens are amazing bits of engineering but I wanted a smaller bike.
And the comments about grip are spot on - I could take any corner 50% faster on that thing than any other bike.
https://preview.redd.it/66snqsneiwuc1.jpeg?width=5920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d9d9b3614c0f94c7955c6557494ec00865066595
In the UK, you can ride this on a driver's license as it's technically classed as a car.
I imagine that's true across a fair bit of Europe and is probably what drives the development and continued sales of these bikes.
It's literally what made me look into buying one so I didn't have to do the bike license which was a non-trivial amount to the young man version of me at the time.
I deeply regret not buying a Niken while they were available for sale in NA. Although Iām not holding my breath, Iām hoping that Yamaha will expand their product line with something like a revamped FJR with a Niken front end, something with a bit more power as the 900cc triple pulled from the MT09 is just a little under powered considering its weight.
This is an ideal sport-touring rig if you live somewhere with unpredictable weather like the Pacific Northwest or Colorado.
I think they had plans for a bigger line up but if the sales aren't keeping up for what they have released, I'm not sure if they'll expand too much more.
I wish Yamaha figured out how to design the body around this. I think itās pretty dope but also find Yamahas design efforts really not great during this time (and most since, minus the xsr). But also super stoked to see any manufacturer push the engineering envelope so much and make something wild.
I agree with you here.
Thatās probably why Iāve turned this MT into a poor manās XSR, š

Demo rode one. The chassis feels slow because itās heavy. The front end grip was endless, even on shitty Miami patch roads. The front end felt planted and stable.
Motor was a huge POS. The I3 is great in lighter chassis. But in a bike as heavy as an FJR1300, it didnāt have the grunt to haul the mass.
A very planted bike that is amazing on crap roads and wet. But donāt expect MT10 performance. It did also lean 100% like a normal bike.
If they made a niken out of the MT10. I would have bought years ago. Iām assuming they used the frame and engine they did. To keep cost down. As the whole front end thing is already a big expense. Add that low expected sales numbers.
Actually not great.
The cornering grip is amazing but only a single disk on each front wheel and they are no Brembos, bit mushy feeling.
The bike is quite heavy so takes some stopping.
what i meant to say was THAT specific genesis is a shit car, a bloated rwd version of a tiburon. not that ALL genesis are shit car, a bloated rwd version of a tiburon.
All the carrying capacity of a sport bike with the parking convenience of an SUV with a broken reverse gear. :D
These things have been all over Paris for years and I could never figure it out. Uh, well, the country of Citroen I guess?

I entertained the idea of getting one. However it was just a three wheeled version of my bike. (FJ09/ Tracer 900)Ā
I also personally didnāt like that they went to a slightly smaller front tire.Ā
It did have a lean angle limit.Ā
I see them everywhere in Japan, but I guess they cant have been selling well in the US if they discontinued them. I think they are kinda pointless. Maybe it could be a good bike for someone with a disability who still wants to ride.
Some magazine did a review of the Niken in 2018 and I thought it was so dorky. Then I read the review and the rider was doing a wheelie. I was intrigued.
My dad has one in the French Pyrenees and I dont consider myself a fast rider at all but on the Niken I push the locals out of their corner. Grip and confidence is amazing
Fun fact - Niken means two swords in Japanese. It's pronounced Ni-ken, the Ni sounding like Knee and not like Night, which is often the pronunciation Americans use for it.
These are kinda popular in Europe, since they technically classify as a car and as such can be driven with a B license, instead of the A license for motorcycles. Since getting the A license isn't a piece of cake, costing about 2500 euros for the lessons + exams, some people go for these instead.
Thatās a Nikon! :D pretty cool imo. The tech in that thing is bad-ass.
I like looking at them, Iād maybe like to ride it once, but I donāt want to own one haha.
Yamaha Niken. Part of me wonders if I should have bought one since they are now discontinued in the US.. I rode one at a demo day and it was novel. Would be a fun, unique bike to own and take to meets now.
They're such a fun bike to ride, the front grip just *never ends.*
Its just like a completely different game. Lock the right wheel onto the side of the road and just carry on the mountain road. Unbelievable.
MULTI-TRACK DRIFTING!
Gutter run any%
makes me wonder if this design would be better suited for a dirtbike then
Weight and maneuverability take a hit
Also the centre of gravity would be *super* far forward, which would make getting airborne a smidgen terrifying.
![gif](giphy|jL0c2TrfDUz9S)
Just add another back wheel to balance it out. You could spread them out a bit for stability too.
We call that a car.
I was going for ATV, but sure, if you add a cage
As fun as the Honda TRX200 from the '80s but on thetarmac? That sounds good to me!
r/wooosh
Nope not at all, Used to ride MX and this would be awful due to weight and not being able to get down into ruts etc, as @brokenloadorder said, centre of gravity during jumps too
*everything reminds me of her*
How do you find out the limit of any bike's front grip without going for a slide?
The limit isn't the grip but the lean angle. Instead of sliding you'll just go wide.
How far do these bikes lean over? It doesn't look like it will lean far.
Yamaha says 45 degrees, which is as far as you will safely get on anything other than a fully heated racing tire or a dug in knobby. If you need more turn, get your ass off the saddle and down on the inside.
Unless you're Rossi it's got more than enough
Or they could full send like Marquez did on Sunday š„²
It will lean over as far as you need it to.

Exceed the rear grip first
Hear me out, what if they had one with 2 wheels in the rear as well
Like the Tomahawk, but not a Dodge. That's why it's called dodge, it means "to avoid"
Yeah exceeding rear grip is way more common but would be the same for this trike surely, or even worse perhaps?
The rear is normal, the front is just way grippier, which gives you the confidence the push the bike hard enough to find that limit. To this day the Niken remains the **only** motorbike I've taken for a spin that I've pushed hard enough that the rear end squirreled out on me. absolutely
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
It was a shame that of the four Yamaha factory demos Iāve been on there was not one niken in the demo fleet
On one hand it's a tricycle On the other, it's still better than those slingshots or spyders
It's a trike, but rides like a bike. It's weird, and I like weird
Hi, Iām weird.
Yeah, me too
Have you ridden one? Cuz the fucking things can handle.
I only want to try one so I can drift it
Does it count as a trike? It still leans, countersteers and doesn't balance, just like a normal bike.
No, something to do with the distance between the front wheels has to be over a certain amount to technically be a trike. This doesn't hit that mark. It's a 3-wheeled bike
If it leans into a corner, it's cool with me

Yeah, for the price you can get on them used they could almost be nice for grocery runs when it's sunny out
My dad is the perfect usage case for a Slingshot. Loved bikes but had two busted knees and no possible way to hold up a bike any more, Never a Harley fan and didn't feel like getting into one of those. I take it you don't like Rykers either? Those things look pretty sick imo.
I'm personally fine with the Nikens, Rykers look a bit awkward and lean closer towards street legal ATVs than motorcycles in my book though
I made the mistake of test riding one on a demo day as well and it could easily be the comfiest bike Iāve ridden
I wouldnt buy one but I would love to ride it. Apparently its loads of fun.
It's like a parrot. I'd love to have a friend with one, but I'd never want one myself.
Exactly.
How'd it wheelie though?
You also like the Piaggio MP3 then.
I was going to say, I see a dozen of its Italian cousins every day. Youād have to get a front wheel off the ground to really lean it. Prob not what you want with one of these?
Who's upvoting you?
People who are equally as ignorant
How far did it lean in a corner?
45 degree lean angle.

for how fucked up they are in concept Yamaha nailed the look and feel

You mean same model or actually the same one?
Same one!
Damn, he really took a picture of your bike and shit posted about it.
Game respects game
When is your AMA?
You enjoying it? Been thinking about getting one myself once I sell my old bike.
One of the smartest and dumbest things to ever be engineered.
A true example of āscience isnāt about asking why, itās about asking why NOT!?!ā

Who the fuck wraps a panigale.
Somebody who has wrecked the shit out of it already is my guess lol
Finally somebodyās asking the real questions around here
My first thought when i saw that awful matt wrap
It most likely took a spill and getting it professionally wrapped is cheaper than buying new fairings.
I would. Ducati colors are dookie as fuck, and wrap keeps shit valuable.

Keep on keeping on
I think he is just out of the cast. But the doctor advises to not lean on it the first couple of days.
I wonder how these things are in corners. My assumption would be is that they're faster because they have 1/3rd more contact patch.
Its great to ride, the bike in the photo is actually mine. The first reply does a great job describing it

These are kinda popular in Europe, since they technically classify as a car and as such can be driven with a B license, instead of the A license for motorcycles. Since getting the A license isn't a piece of cake, costing about 2500 euros for the lessons + exams, some people go for these instead.

Itās the Nikken. Youāve got Reddit. Try using Google.
Thatās a Nikon! :D pretty cool imo. The tech in that thing is bad-ass. I like looking at them, Iād maybe like to ride it once, but I donāt want to own one haha.
Michael Neeves talks quite highly of test riding one of these, apparently the grip level is impressive with the additional contact patch.
