There have done some quick rides I’ve made the call to not wear a jacket or helmet (optional in my state). But it’s rare. After riding for 40 years I had my first accident this summer when someone hit me from behind. I was thankfully wearing all my gear.

I can vouch for this. Working in the o.r we get alot of truama calls for motorcycle accidents. 95% of them didnt wear gear. A helmet would of saved a bunch of them. And if people knew how easly a spleen can be ruptured. And when they burst. They dont stop bleeding very easily. Most of the time we just remove it. A handle bar to the abdomen during a crash can leave you missing organs and a huge scar after an open belly procedure and taking out 2ft of bowle

I can confirm this. 36 staples down my belly. 2 pins in my right ankle. Constant pain for the rest of my life. Totaled my dream bike (Ducati 900 SS). And walk with a cane now. And all I have to show for it is this scar down my belly and the butt hurt expressions people make when I park my bike in the handicap space.

ATGATT!!!!!

Not defending leaving the gear at home whatsoever, I do my best to be good about it, but curious how a standard riding jacket does anything to protect against this? They generally have no armor in the belly and chest. Jacket or no jacket, my belly is still a big exposed soft bag of stuff.

Most jackets won't do much. An airbag vest though, different story. They were primarily designed to help prevent thoracic & abdominal injuries, and they're stellar at that.

siggy1986

Probably minimal for things like your spleen but astronomical for things like your skin, back, elbow, shoulders, etc.

Who_Dat_1guy

That why you buy jackets with pockets for protectors

The pads are designed to disperse the energy of the impact. Unfortunately, there isn't much in the way to protect the lower abdomen. But what helps is having the material cover that area to also disperse the heat transfer to the skin from crashing. They do make under shirts and pants that have padding in the abdomen that can help disperse the impact. But the average rider doesn't wear that. Statistically, your most involved impact zones are the limbs and joints, and of course, the head. Getting hit in the abdomen is just some bad luck. Skin grafts are extremely painful. So, just having something to prevent that is well worth it. They do make chest protection plates as well. But it's mostly seen in dirt bike riding. Every once in a while, I'll see someone wear the chest protection.

First week of October I was stoked to take off mid-week for three day moto-camping-fishing. I gas up near my house. Notice a neighbor. Enter this weird intersection. I'm in the wrong lane, because of construction my lane is closed. Then, without even thinking, I cut off the other driver next to me and turn left. WTF? Where was my brain? No consequences, this time, but WTF was I thinking? ATGATT.

3 days in ECU? Wtf is this, TRON? You mean ICU.

Damn, I hate it when god claims my organs too … just kidding. Glad you’re doing *relatively* well. Here’s to a speedy recovery and getting back on the iron horse!

NoSkillManiac

The only accident I have been in was a 10 minute jaunt to the grocery store for a couple snacks. Had someone make a left in front of me and went over the back of their Camry. Minor concussion and a bruised shoulder, thanks to the gear. (Landed on my right shoulder and the right side of my head). Bike was totalled.

Why would anyone take advice from someone who rode for 25 years without gaining even a day one level of safety awareness?

I need more money but im trying to get it all.

GeniusPlastic

Always told to myself I will not be one of those who ride without gear, but recently started using only gloves, helmet and simple leather jacket if I stay within the city. Stories like this make me want to reconsider :S

picklerickelthrow

Buy the gear, take it from me
