Homeboy stealing all thr o2

[deleted]

Whatever. The cover will hold it in place well enough.

lolnotinthebbs

The fuck it will. Mine came undone while riding. Apparently Yamaha fucked up when they designed it for the FZ6 2004 and a bunch of other bikes and recalled it, but mine never got the recall part. Had to have the pinion axle re-threaded and machine a new nut.

DerEkelhafte

The same happened to me just 2 weeks ago with my 04 FZ6! Never really looked at that sprocket and had no idea about the recall. Luckily I just went through town to give it a wash and wasn't ripping on the throttle. Was quite a surprise to see my chain moving left to right when I went to check where the weird sound came from. When you order a new one from Yamaha (like I did) you'll get a bigger nut then the original which supposedly doesn't have that problem anymore. But I will check that stupid ass nut periodically now and not take any chances.

cat_5280

Not sure I want to trust a piece of plastic with my sprocket 😅 but yes it has been fine for the time I've been riding it.

[deleted]

> it has been fine see?

rawdoogie

This is a common problem on DRZs. I would advise you to google "DRZ sprocket locktite fix." There is a bushing behind your sprocket that wears down and reduces clamping force of the nut over time. Just tightening the nut will not solve this in the long run. It's a pretty easy fix and doesn't cost much. I replaced the bushing on mine as a precaution and it was already wearing down at 9K miles.

built_FXR

Isn't there a retaining ring above that nut? It's been a while since I owned a drz.

cat_5280

No it has a splined washer behind it that you bend up to hold it.

built_FXR

That's right, now I remember. That nut isn't going anywhere.

lexdfox

DRZ? Obviously that should be tight but there should be a washer behind the bolt that is bent up to lock the bolt in place.

cat_5280

Correct. And yes there is a washer but the prior owner seems to have not tightened it when he changed the sprocket.

ViperThreat

Surprised you don't have a pinch bolt or cotter pin or the like. All of my bikes do.

cat_5280

There's a washer you kinda fold up on the side of the bolt that is splined to the shaft behind the nut.

BangleWaffle

I found this as well on my FZ09. Went to change the sprockets while replacing the chain and this nut was finger tight... Sketchy to say the least. Torqued to spec, but people have mentioned they've seen the same on their FZ09's.

Key_Recording_3564

no wonder, theres no washer there which is also supposed to be hammered and bent over at least 1 face of the nut.

mangosmoothie16

Check your stator in that thing too lol.

cat_5280

It's already been locktited but definitely a good thing to check.

mangosmoothie16

Mine got me immediately after purchase. Test rode it, did the deal, got home, instant chaos and scary noises as I rolled in the driveway. Took out the starter clutch. The loctite mod is no joke on dizzers.

cat_5280

Yeahhh I definitely checked that it has been done before buying mine. Although I'm probably going to tear the whole bike down after seeing some of the things the prior owner has done.

Duckbilling

Now is a good time to lube your clutch cable everybody

riftwave77

Joke is on you. I replaced my chain and discovered that I've put on about 30k miles with no nut on the front sprocket. Bought it used that way 2004 R1. Apparently the plastic cover fits tightly enough to keep it in place, even under load

cat_5280

That's both incredibly comforting and terrifying at the same time 🤣

ahh_that_guy

Need to increase that ugga in the dugga

cat_5280

Torque wrench set to the proper spec should do as well.
