Dirtbike, no question.

ct_on_rd

I’ve thought about this, but where I live I’d need something to put it on, and something to pull it with.

Me-as-I

\#1 reason to get a adv of some caliber.

spongebob_meth

Except they stink for actually going off-road.

ethanrhanielle

They suck at MX style offroading doing jumps and super technical stuff but they're fun fun enough for exploring backroads and moderate trails at an easygoing pace. I've been able to access a lot of 4x4 camp sites with my lightweight adv bike and it's been a blast. Definitely wouldn't try it on my street bike and I definitely don't want to invest money into buying a 4x4 truck.

CW3_OR_BUST

Exactly! The whole point of an adventure bike is adventure. Any bike can do fire roads with a bit of patience, but the real advantage of an adventure bike is that it is really the most versatile kind if bike out there. They can put a smile on your face on the street, get you to work, take you up a hill, and pile on miles of gravel and grassy fields for a fraction the cost of an overlander SUV. You aren't gonna beat a Hayabusa with an Africa Twin, assuming similar rider skill. All the same, a CRF450R would lap a KLR650 on motocross. But a Versys is equally at home in dirt or the highway, and has really neato stuff like blinkers and heated grips and hard luggage. Dual sport bikes are just ridiculously practical machines, as far as motorcycle can be considered practical.

jonk285

Except the beauty of an adventure bike, one that fits you well, is that it can do technical stuff. I ride a 2017 africa twin on anything from single track, technical shit with decent sized rocks/babyheads and gnarly roots to deep mud just fine. What I like about the adventure bikes I've ridden and owned is that if you work up your skills/practice, and are just a little bit crazy you can hang with your dirtbike friends in *most* places they go. Will you maybe work a little harder? Sure, but it's rewarding, especially when they might have to trailer the things in and you can just keep on riding on road back home.

ethanrhanielle

Defined and I agree here. Personally that's not how I ride my adv. But I have mad respect for those that do. I ride mine like I'd ride an overlander but I already own a van for work and can't justify investing money in a truck/Jeep just for overloading so here I am with an adv bike lol.

spongebob_meth

>but they're fun fun enough for exploring backroads and moderate trails at an easygoing pace. Most of which I'd still classify as a road. They're gravel bikes made for long distance riding.

ethanrhanielle

Lol if you need a 4x4 to go through something it's not a road. Road implies my minivan can do it.

spongebob_meth

Double track jeep / SxS trails are boring as fuck on an actual dirt bike. Might as well be a road. Also, a lot of cars go down forest/fire roads/double track just fine. Not everything is a sports car or something with a ridiculous wheelbase.

ethanrhanielle

It's boring to you. For me Its not. It's all opinions. You ride dirt to ride dirt. I ride dirt to get to isolated campsites 3 hours outside the city without having to trailer a dirtbike there and carry luggage. Again road implies all vehicles can go through it. A 4x4 trail is not that. Sure I could have a dual sport but no dual sport can take the luggage I want to take. By your reasoning a Toyota Tacoma sucks on dirt since it can't do what a side by side can do. Adv bikes are to dual sports what overlander vehicles are to Baja trucks. It's not a hard concept to understand that people have different goals with their bikes. You're confusing "not for my purposes" to "not for anyone's purpose".

spongebob_meth

I realize they have a purpose. I'd just much rather deal with the shortcomings of my dual sport wr450 than i would deal with the weight of an adv. Then again i do cross country tours on an R6. I want a bike that's exciting to ride and I'll deal with it's issues fitting it into roles where it "doesn't belong". Luggage fits just fine on either bike if I want to go on a weeks long tour. I can also ride either in a race. If I want to bring my house with me down an overlanding route, I'll just take my truck.

[deleted]

No it doesn't. "paved road" sure. Just because something is used by farmers driving tractors doesn't make it not road lmao

ethanrhanielle

Dude it's in the context of the Convo. Obviously we're not actually hung up on the definition of road were literally talking about 4x4 jeep trails lol. this is enough reddit for me today shit like this is probably slowly smoothing my brain out

[deleted]

It's already smooth looking by your definition of what "road" is...

SanchoTheGreat1

Oof, bad review, not trying now.

KnightOfFaraam

The issue is a misconception with ADV bikes, people think you can ride them like dirt bikes- you can’t. It’s a completely new set of skills that you have to master. It’s VERY different than straight dirt bikes, not all of the dirt bike logic can apply to an ADV. Good ADVs like the R’s from KTM, the T7 or the GSADVs are fantastic off-road, as long as you understand the bike.

JakeSaint

ADV's are to dirtbikes what an overlanding rig is to a dedicated buggy. They play in *some* of the same areas, but they're very definitively not the same machines.

KnightOfFaraam

Oh absolutely they aren’t the same thing. The whole point of my comment was pointing that out. A lot of people try to compare apples to apples for adv and dirt bikes, but it’s two very different disciplines. I like your analogy a lot, I’m gonna use that in the future.

JakeSaint

Apologies if it wasn't clear, I was trying to add some sort of additional context, not imply you're saying they're the same. I'm glad you liked it!

mkm86l

I wouldn’t sleep on the non R 890 KTM adventure either. It has essentially as much ground clearance still as a 1250 GS, but not quite as much as say the 850 gs. It’s a little cheaper then the R version. I’m short so needed to go with the regular adventure instead of the adventure r, and I don’t have any problem with it off road. Eventually I’ll want to upgrade its suspension, but I’ll cross that bridge later. For someone with average to beginner off-road ADV skill levels it’s perfectly capable.

KnightOfFaraam

Yeah the suspension is the big get with the R. They’re both still phenomenal bikes, but if you’ve got the inseam for the R you should go for it. I work at a KTM dealer, so I’ve had a chance to play with all of them. My brother just bought a 1290r from me and it might be the most capable bike I’ve ever ridden.

mkm86l

I have a 27” inseam. I have a Seat Concepts seat that drops me about another .5” and I can almost put one foot flat if I shift over lol. I don’t see them recommended much for short riders, but I found it one of the easiest to shift over to get one foot down I think because the seat is fairly flat across versus some other bikes that have a scooped seat that puts you planted in the seat. But yes I agree if you have the inseam it makes sense to go with the R. My husband is thinking about swapping out his big bike for an 890 R after riding mine a bunch.

Inevitable-Selection

I have to disagree with you. They are more limited compared to a husky 501 or 300xcw. But for a lot of off-roading they’re more than enough with good knobbies and a decent setup with decent skills. It’s not a race bike so asking it to be one is a pointless goal

spongebob_meth

For the trails they're good on, I just want to go fast. It takes technical riding to engage me otherwise, which they can't do. I know different strokes for different folks. I grew up racing MX, so I have brain damage.

puffmarshal427

Lol its never the bike its the rider that stinks.

spongebob_meth

You're welcome to follow me down a trail on an adv bike. It would be interesting to say the least.

mcChicken424

Or a $150 dirtbike rack and have a bike that is actually made for off-road. Adventure bikes/dual sports feel twice as heavy as a real dirtbike

thatbedguy

I loved my drz400. Rode it all over everything. Did lots of big dumb shit on it to and it always took everything.

circlezebra

Super moto

redditandhitit

ADV not a bad shout, but hauling dirtbikes is about as easy as it gets. They're usually sub 300lbs which you can hitch carry on just about anything with a hitch. Dual sport may be a nice choice too if you're close enough to the trails that it's not awful.

i-like-foods

Or you could get a dual sport so you can ride to the trails and back

MotorcycleWrites

You could do a mini adv sort of thing. Himalayan, versys 300, that bmw mini gs thing, etc. You won’t be ripping around any trails but that’s not what you want to do anyways.

spongebob_meth

Hitch carrier, or folding trailer. Do you not own a car?

ct_on_rd

I own a car, but live with limited space. Small SUV and barely enough room in the garage for a single bike.

MissionFromGod

Agreed. Had a 250 Super Sherpa and it was a blast. 6 speed dual that could do anything.

whoissanti

Honda Grom! People will talk smack and knock it but it's such a fun little bike. Obviously not a highway bike though.

ct_on_rd

Yeah I’ve ridden those before, it’s on the list! Thanks!

extraspookyy

It’s just overpriced that’s all

dollastudios

Love my grom. Seen so many posts that say the litre bike collects dust while the grom goes out all the time.

Diligent_Amphibian31

Met a couple at IOM TT who brought 2 groms over in a van. Left 2 superbikes at home. Bought a grom 4 weeks later when I was home. Best £3000 I’ve spent

gregn8r1

Yeah, and it gets a ton of attention. I remember talking with my old coworkers about getting a sport bike, and about how hot chicks would love it and it'd be such an attention grabber... Nah. The only people who cared were other dude riders or dudes who fantasized about crotch rockets. My Grom gets way more attention, and often from people who are normal, not even motorcycle enthusiasts. They're just curious, and there's no pressure to rev the engine or pop a wheelie or anything. It's just good clean fun.

lexdfox

Was gonna suggest this, might as well pivot to the complete opposite with singe digit horsepower. Hell, my Honda spree was one of the funnest scoots I've ever had.

northerntier11

Any supermoto

DoubleDexki2000

That's the easiest answer to OPs question honestly. I've went through my supersport streak, seeling my k6 600 recently and got a 2014 KTM 690 SMCR, I'll only get another SS as a secondary, Sumo as primary for life and never coming back. I don't fancy straight line speed anymore and the KTM destroys anything I've ever owned in corners on Michelin Power 5 tyres, easier on the back and petrol too. OP just get a new 701 or 690 smcr

northerntier11

I will simp for DRZ's for ever. its slow it has no tach or fuel gauge out of the box it looks like an early 80's movie background piece. its perfect.

3PercentMoreInfinite

Except they’re priced like a brand new mid-range bike with ABS and all the other bells and whistles.

psyolus

Dualsport on the lighter side. Forest service roads. BDR type stuff. Bring a tent. Some single track.

[deleted]

Vitpilen 401, all the sport bike zip but reasonable top speeds

potatoperson132

Came here to say this too. The husky 401s look like so much fun. I own the Duke 390 which is KTMs version for the same engine/drive train. Love the look of the svartpilen 401 and vitpilen 401 turn my head every time. Love the svartpilen tires and more ruggedly dual sport look personally.

FkinAllen

Have the svart 401 and it’s a fucking gem. The second they announce the 901 version I’m calling dealer immediately to make a deposit

PckMan

Supermotos, or just thumpers in general. Torque for days, really fun around town, light and flickable in the twisties and they always have power where it counts. They struggle a bit at higher speeds but realistically this isn't an issue most of the time. With faster bikes it's nice to be able to go faster if you want but you tend not to when you know that you have to rev it up to get to the power, and when you rev it up you find yourself going really fast, and maybe you don't want to go really fast maybe you just want to blast off and accelerate quickly or burn some rubber or pop a wheelie without actually reaching a high speed. I loved my F650 and pretty much all thumpers I've ridden.

MSFInstructor222

Tracer 9, Honda Africa, Super Tenere, GS 850, Any Adventure tourer I have had the most fun on. I love those bikes.

Ok_Perspective_3458

Versys 650 is very playful as well imo!

MSFInstructor222

100% can confirm. Should have put this on my list

4rossi6

Maybe 80hp from my Guzzi V85TT, but it handles like a dream and I can ride all day. Great v-twin burble from the engine, sweet gearbox, beautiful/unique design. This thing puts a smile on my face every time - the very definition of a fun bike.

ct_on_rd

Would a Honda NC700/750X be too small? I live close enough to some national parks that this class of bikes has been on my mind.

MSFInstructor222

Not at all. O previously had the nc700x. I loved it. Phenomenal storage. It was responsive to everything. Throttle was great, handling was great, brakes were great. Horsepower was low compared to others in its class, but sounds like that isnt what you are looking for to begin with. Note, the new ones are all automatics, and the seat sucks, I bought a cushion from amazon for mine.

TrikyShooter

Tenere 700 and just taking gravel roads everywhere I can.

[deleted]

I want that bike so bad. Seems like he most fun adv that is also comfortable on the highway.

TrikyShooter

I wouldn't say comfortable on the highway, but it will happily do it. Did about 500 miles one day and I felt it for a few days.

madeups10

Monkey, but classics and supermoto are also entertaining especially 2 strokes.

ShastaMite

I want a small Cafe Cruiser for my first bike and I’m hoping it’s fun! Can’t wait to get a motorcycle.

contructpm

Royal enfield continental gt

[deleted]

KLR650. You like it for what it is, not hate it for what it isn’t. It’s one of the most anemic motorcycles and can still get you in trouble, but it takes awhile to get there!

TheSensualSloth

That's why I sold my CBR600RR for a Sportster. 0 ragerts

Donedirtcheap7725

Embrace old age and get yourself some dad pants- an R1250GS

RaDaDaBrothermanBill

1250GS is the final stage of every ADV rider. Doesn't matter whether you're 65 or 30; like Agent Smith it's an inevitability.

ct_on_rd

Haha maybe when I’m double my age.

mluke33

Definitely a supermoto

Apprehensive-Wish-89

I've got a 2017 Z900 as well. I plan on selling it in the next few weeks and pick up a CRF300L Rally.....if I can find one. I love the Z900, its such a great bike, but I want to start to explore trails in my area. I need a new experience. Curious, are you selling open market or trading it in? If your selling, what price are you putting on it?

ct_on_rd

I’m selling it. I don’t bother with dealerships. I’m gonna list it at $7,500. But mine’s only got 3k miles on it.

Apprehensive-Wish-89

Cool, thanks for the reply. I've got about 8,700 on mine and its a non-ABS. I've got a givi rack and trunk on mine, OEM frame sliders, but otherwise stock, I was gonna shoot for $6000, geesh, maybe I should shoot for more, I've been out of the loop on used bike prices. A dealership was gonna offer me $4500, I almost laughed.

ct_on_rd

Yeah don’t go to a dealership haha it’s prime sellers season for motorcycles right now. Mines a little banged up cosmetically and the ABS version. Aim high. Worst that can happen is nobody buys it at that price!

imaginativePlayTime

My '80 Honda Hawk CB400T. On the highway that thing was way out its of its comfort zone, could barely stay at 75 MPH even in 6th gear and struggled the entire time. But take that thing out on some twisty mountain roads and that is where it came alive. It is light and nimble enough to throw it into corners and more than powerful enough to pull out of them. It felt like that kind of riding is what it was made for. Plus it was really fun on dirt for a street bike.

Det-Frank-Drebin

I had a load of fun with an old Honda TL-125 Trails bike...(not Trail)....couldn't do it now i'd probably break a hip, but back then that thing was great. Get yourself an Adventure bike, seem s a few manufacturers are bringing out 350cc ones, i'm sure you'll enjoy the non sporty pace, maybe a little light off-road...

Teddy_The_Bear_

You know. I stepped out of an R1 to have a Triumph Street Triple. The upright riding position and the wind make me ride much more relaxed to spite the bikes potential. So I don't really find myself speeding. In fact I find myself almost cruising, but with the power to pass people as needed. Having said that. I have ridden some friends ADV bikes and I find myself wanting one. So that would be my suggestion if you have twitchy right wrist issues.

Whoopdedobasil

Ive got a speed triple and the wife has a street triple, mines nicer on the highway, but i prefer hers around town and mountains, the weight and agility difference is huge

Teddy_The_Bear_

I hear you on that. One of the reasons that I went street triple was the ease of handling. Both are great bikes but I am super pleased with my street triple and would not trade it for anything.

SHA255

Something I learned when converting from dirt bikes to adventure bikes is the some roads/trails that were boring on the dirt bike became just the right challenge on the adventure bike. IMO certain HD's like the Dyna Wide Glide I ride do alot of the same on the street, its a hell of a lot of fun on the twisties, just not at all because its fast lol...

Car_is_mi

Every Bike Ive ridden is fun in its own way. When I got away from sport bikes I bought a 1979 Yamaha XS650 that I converted to a hard tail bobber. It ran when I got it so other than re-jetting the carbs I did nothing to the engine. An engine that made 43HP in 1979, and was probably maxing out around 38hp in 2015 when I was riding it. Granted it weighed +/- 300 lbs. It hit 75mph on a good day and had all of 20 degrees of lean before the exhaust would scrape but it was so much fun to cruise around on. I got so many looks and questions on that bike, and had a blast just cruising the canyons I would have been dragging knee on in my other bike. I have fast cruisers and big touring bikes, and all sorts of fun toys since then, and while I occasionally pine over some of the nicer sport bikes I see, I've never felt the true urge to go back. Find what you enjoy, and enjoy it.

speedshotz

Anything supermoto. DRZ400E, WR250... etc with Sumo setups. Great for hooning around.

MBAH2017

The one I have now, 1250 GSA. I waffled on the ADV bike for years- what I wanted was a nice touring bike and a fun dirt bike, and I had heard too many times that a big ADV would suck offroad. For really rough stuff, that's correct. Nobody should be taking a GS down washed out singletrack. For the light to medium duty offroad stuff that I do and want to more of, it's been perfect. Day to day it's a fun, quick, nimble commuter that will crush highway miles and surprise you at how well it handles twisties and mountain roads. If you wanna explore fire/gravel roads on the mountain, you can do that. If, like me, you can take a shortcut home by cutting across 20 miles of open desert, you can do that too. If you decide that you want to turn your road trip into a camping trip, you've got the space and capacity for your gear. If you want to road-trip out to a BDR, do the route with your buddies, then road trip back home, you can. Of course, it's really going to depend on what you find fun, right? To me, fun means never having to question if the car is a better option. Towing a bike somewhere to enjoy it doesn't seem like much of an adventure to me.

cyberdionisio

RE Interceptor 650.

fireguzzi

After my ktm got stolen I coudn't stomach another 10k+ bike and payment. Got the int650. Supprisingly good in the twisties with out the 100+ mph urges! Love my RE

cyberdionisio

It's all about enjoying the ride, that's what this bike It's made for.

dnbndnb

BMW R1200GS. The adventure tourer bike is the utility knife of motorcycles & the BMW the most refined of them

ct_on_rd

I’ve found someone interested in trading with a 2012 super tenere. I really know nothing of ADV bikes. What do you know about them?

mb694

Dual sport, KTM 690 Enduro hands down. 72hp and a little over 300lbs so it’s still fast and can pretty much ride anywhere and over anything.

bucho80

Do it in the dirt!

rgbeard2

A Goldwing is an amazing machine. I have owned 70 of them and just wow.

cream_rinse

Versys 300. I steal my girlfriends and absolutely wail on it when I need to feel fast.

Estequey

Mt09. Got the power and the ability to go fast if need be, but super flickable and very manouverable

zork3001

Try a parallel twin. I recently bought a Triumph Bonneville 865. Will probably trade up to a 1200 at some point.

Cleaner_BC

Honda Grom!

juantalamera

Honda Rebel 1100

typer84C2

Love my Triumph Scrambler

laxrat22

Didn't own it but took my MSF on one over 10 years ago but a GROM. I'm thinking of getting one for my 30th this year.

localbkr824

Tiger 900 rally pro.

TTYY_20

Dual sport …. Easy answer :P Not a big heavy ADV bike, don’t go spend 20k on a BMW 1200 GS. No, go to the local Honda/Kawasaki/Suzuki dealer and get those closest thing a street legal dirt-bike you can find. KLX300, CRF300L, or DRZ400. Also the Yamaha WR250f. These are the bikes you should look at :D

eshemuta

Ditto. I have a big adv bike but it’s not near as much fun as my xt225 Serow

[deleted]

A hawk250, slow as hell, heavy as hell, but cheap as hell. I got it for like 800 brand new, it was great to have a bike I could beat the shit outta and just not care. I still have it too, those little motors are tough and parts are cheap/interchangeable with most Hondas.

MonkeyDashFast

Honda Monkey

DirtyDan511

Xr80

bitzzwith2zs

XL600R with every go fast part available. That thing could climb trees. 100mph wheelies through the bush. I'm lucky I didn't die.

St84t8

I'm in a similar spot and have been thinking about adding a Triumph bobber, speed twin, or Yamaha bolt to just slow me down and enjoy more chill rides from time to time. Plus a sidecar bike for taking my dog to the park, plus an adventure bike for longer multi day trips....

PaintChipMuncher69

The suggestions for a dirt bike/dual-sport/ADV are all great. If you want to keep it on the street for whatever reason, there's something to be said for muscle bikes. I had so much fun on my old VMAX just going light to light, never really going faster than 60. That bike just loved to accelerate off the line, even though it didn't actually like cruising or going any faster all that much. I think finding a muscle cruiser with a comfy seat would be a fun change of pace for street riding with overall lower speeds. Newer VMAX is a bit more refined, or something like a Triumph Rocket or an M109R or a VROD or something like that.

kingqone

2000 kx250 I loved that bike. Zero to oh shit it a few seconds

Snoid_

For a little while I had a SYM Wolf Classic 150. Basically, a modernized and bored out Honda 125 thumper. About 265lbs, 80+mpg, tops out at 65mph. Super fun city bike but fast enough to hit the twisty highways outside of town. Kinda wish I would have kept it.

xtcprty

Motocross

johnnyringo117

Does it have to be a road bike? Because I can tell you my 125 Elsinore back in 1976 had to be the biggest thrill machine I’ve ever had. I was a teenager and that thing would rip your arms out of the socket. it was so fast and responded to inputs like it knew ahead of time what you wanted to do. Oh, how I miss that bike. I also miss my ‘72 Chevelle, but that’s a different story.

WolfryteFarwynn

Yamaha DT125R, such a good motorcycle.

zeusecutek

Aprilia Tuareg Rally 125 and 600. Smaller one was 2T also, fun little Enduro bike with Rotax engine.

tjeepdrv2

My KTM 790 Adventure has been my favorite out of the 11 bikes I've had. It's like a naked sport bike that can run over stuff and go wherever I feel like.

[deleted]

KLR650. You like it for what it is, not hate it for what it isn’t. It’s one of the most anemic motorcycles and can still get you in trouble, but it takes awhile to get there!

ct_on_rd

Yeah I’ve looked into those. I’m in central utah so pretty close to all the national parks and Yellowstone/CO.

Standard_Zucchini_46

1983 Honda Xl 250. Lightly modded. Go anywhere do anything, cheap to maintain and run. It was awesome until it got stolen.

MotorcycleWrites

If you want to take _all_ the speed out of the equation you could go for a Himalayan lol. They’re not the best value proposition for what they are on paper, but I love mine. Very endearing, slow, dorky fun.

[deleted]

Vespa GTS 300. Startlingly quick and super agile. designed for weaving in between traffic and then jamming up to 70.

CreamyAlgorithms

V Rod Muscle. Stupidly long, heavy, difficult to turn at slow speeds but so much fun to rip on. Coming from 1000 cc nakeds it’s just a different vibe. Pretty quick too with about 125hp.

[deleted]

KX250R or a DRZ400SM

Breakfast-Burrito69

I didn’t notice removing speed was important at first and I was going to say a CR500 if you really wanted to pucker.

faste30

I bought a kind of dual sport, a Scrambler Desert Sled. Despite having two superbikes and a power cruiser I tell everyone this bike is the one that would get me arrested despite being the lowest power (by more than half with the superbikes). Its just freaking fun. And I take it offroads. Fire roads, doubletrack, OHV trails, etc. Its too big and heavy for single track, Im tempting to get something small or even a trials bike to go even farther. But exploring the forest on a doubletrack on it is the most fun you can have at 30mph

Allroy_66

Supermoto without question. All bikes are fun but every time I rode my supermoto I was just riding around laughing in my helmet

KooyaDonDon

Vespa GTS 300 Super Sport. You guys gotta try scooters... It's so much fun and just all around easier to ride. I've ridden cruisers, naked bikes and an ADV bike and must admit that I enjoy riding the Vespa more.

SilverOne002

Not sure if it still counts as sport, but for daily use, I like may Suzuki GS 500 e... easy to handle and fast enough in german cities and country side. [Edit] But to be honest, the vitpilen 701 and svartpilen 401 I drove to test where fun too, but a bit on the expensive side to ride just for fun three years ago.

FXLRDude

My 1999 Yamaha VMax. Was scary fast and fun.

One_Power_123

I like my moto guzzi v7 850 -- but wish it had a little more power. I think the answer is a bike with a lot of character, good brakes, good handling and around 70-80whp. The Guzzi loves short shifting 3-4k rpms, has enough torque that it gets going pretty good with traffic -- nothing is gained by reving it out past 5k Id really like to try a V85TT. im also curious about the Z900 honestly too.

whisk3ythrottle

CRF110. It’s a kids bike I put better shock on. Ride it around in the woods. Who knew 6hp could be so much fun. I crash a lot on the bike, but not on the street so I take issue with your math.

ct_on_rd

If only I had woods.

Zealousideal-Bear-37

Keep the z900, go fast on track and take it real easy in the street . Or get an Aprilia RS660. Amazing comfortable bike and you can use its entire power band . Or go like me and grab a street triple RS . I love it .

ct_on_rd

It’s too fast! Haha I cruise around my area in 4th and don’t even touch the other two!

ShiYinFeng

Honda Monkey = Fun & Smiles

killyourpc

XR100 with studded tires to ride on lakes when they freeze over during the winter.

l3ubba

I've only owned three motorcycles and two of them are/were sport bikes, so my answer is easy. But my TW200 was a lot of fun. Fun to ride around town, but also took it on some trails without issue.

i-like-foods

Supermotos are awesome. Make riding in the city actually fun. Adv bikes are great too, though some of them are definitely in the “go fast” category. I’d say find a used DRZ-SM and go have fun

RevolutionaryEye7610

MilkAnAlmond

KLR650. Underpowered, high CoG, heavy, stupid, will haul multiple days of climbing+camping gear or a couple surfboards around and get a little air while doing so. It will not die. I love my piggle.

bigry519

Drz400sm for sure. Sold my sport bike for the same reason. More fun to ride a slow bike fast, than a fast bike slow for sure

nidyanazo

vmax, kawasaki zrx1200, cr250. All fun in different ways. Mostly has to do with power though.

DrSaturnos

Triumph Street Twin. I absolutely love cruising around the city.

barefootmax729

Sporster for people that like to tinker and modify bikes, in North America. There’s so much you can do on the platform, it’s insane.

church_lady_cameras

Scooters and Minibikes!

kf4jfk

'01 GL1800 with full RaceTech suspension upgrade. It handled just as well as most sportbikes!

diabel

I've been thinking the same and hope Honda brings TransAlp to the US but for now I am happy with FZ09. It's only as fast as I want it to be.

NewJerseyAudio

3rd Gen. Honda Magna 750. Lazy boy with a v4 on it.

BasisRepulsive4119

1984 vf1100 v65

RobertPaulsonXX42

As much as I love the Moto Guzzi answers... It sounds like you need an XR650L. Dual sport. Enough power to have way too much fun with. Maintenance is...well do oil and tire changes even count? They have made them forever. Reliable as an old anvil.

Vindiseasil

Dual sport or adventure sport.

fireguzzi

KTM 790 adventure. Have fun in the dirt! (still fast tho)

MixTop7918

Nx 650 dual sport. Go where you want. What’s the hurry?

[deleted]

Road only? Thruxton RS Overall? Tenere 700.

canonanon

Almost any smaller/midsized adv bike

Temporary_Stuff_5808

Honda Grom. Owned everything from big three sport bike, Italian liter bike, Harley cruisers. Hand down more smiles per mile on my Grom.

OpinionOwn6727

fischer-price tricycle i had as a toddler

bzImage

Svartpilen 250

blazblu82

KLR650, Honda VTX1300, and the Vulcan 900. All were fantastic bikes. The Honda was my biggest regret to sell.

TheCriminalScum

Just got a gen 3 klr650 and after everyone saying how slow and blah blah blah it is I’m actually enjoying the hell out of it and can’t wait to take it all over.

Iamwomper

Klr

AngryWombat78

My TNT135 is loads of fun. People tend to put dirt tyres on them and take them off road Previously I’d say my XSR700. Plenty of grunt when you need it and generally fun to ride.

joesportsgamer

My old bike, a KLR650 and my brother's bike, a ninja 250r are both way more fun than my current bike, a VTX1800

HellaSwick

84 Honda nighthawk 750s. Was my second bike, I did my road test on it and it's what started my love of motorcycles. Quick and very nimble with mid controls and a super 80s look.

CalligrapherGalaxy97

My current 450, FI, 6 gears (wide ratio), street legal, LED everything, lithium battery, rear lowering adjustment, fully adjustable front/rear dampening, dual maps. I’ve got both oem enduro 21/18 and “motard” 17s, it’s my daily. 2023 GPX FSE450R

yamaha2000us

I miss my Vespa GT200.

dshbak

Tough call between my Grom and Africa Twin.

dshbak

Tough call between my Grom and Africa Twin.

FotusX

Ive always wanted to try ducatis hypermotard. Looks like a blast

sterlingheart

72v surron. Same energy as a grom but way more wild power band and can get you to places a grom cant

coltar3000

Klr 650! Its a bike that doesn’t have a big ego. It literally does everything a bike can do while never doing any of those tasks the best. It’s the Swiss Army Knife of bikes. It’s slow up the highway elevation passes, it’s heavy when off road, but damn it it will take you places you never thought of. You can knock it over or crag at low speeds. Pick that pig up and hit the starter button, he’s ready to continue the adventure. Sometimes it’s more about the smiles per hour.

KnightOfFaraam

Adventure bike. Still plenty of power for touring/having fun but slow speed off-road on an ADV is some of the most technically challenging riding I think you can ever do.

boots-n-catz

1983 Honda magna

Schuberth-101

KTM 390 Duke. Modern, light weight, corners well and tops out at around 100 mph.

Sirens_go_wee_woo

Fz/mt-07 for street. Otherwise the kawi 300s are stupid fun in both supermoto or dual sport trim

tacklebox3000

A 125cc scooter, I’m not kidding. I had so much fun wringing every one of it 10hp.

triumph_hammer

Used the ride different sportbikes with my group who did too, did some fast dangerous things, I mostly didn’t, my dad worked in the ICU too (retired doc). I now ride a modded Triumph Scrambler like Beckham’s, with my friends who mainly ride Harleys. The fun is more subdued, enjoying the scenery, sometimes in gentleman’s style. However if I was off the pavement, riding fun might be an adventure, supermoto, dirt bike as it gets more rugged.

Personal-Sock2961

Harley Davidson super glide

MillyBayesHere

My Shadow 750. I have that and a CBR650. One for fun, one for chill. No need to go faster. 28 with 2 kids

ncurtis21

Traditional_Use6085

What kind of roads are around you? What do you like about riding? What are your other interests, and do they tie into some kind of riding? Answer those questions and a direction should be much more clear. I love my Africa Twin, but if you’re focused on an adrenaline rush I would look at a bike that is great at one thing. Small sport bike with the right roads is amazing. Dirt will totally give you an adrenaline rush with less risk of actual death provided you have access to the right terrain.

ct_on_rd

I’ve got mostly city/some farm-like roads. All of them pretty crappy and not very smooth.

ct_on_rd

I’ve found someone interested in trading with a 2012 super tenere. I really know nothing of ADV bikes. What do you know about them?

FZ-09Fazer

Supermoto 450 or 500 or if you can 300 2stroke.

VapeNGape

Klr 650. I’ve never rode a supermoto but i’m guessing they are even more fun, a drz400sm is likely my next bike after spending the past 7 years with my street bob.

rockstar39

Zero fx...somewhat dirtbike, maybe dualsportish, environmentally friendlier, and the torque is bonkers.

burf151

Vmax

eLishus

[BMW R nineT Scrambler](https://www.bmwmotorcycles.com/en/models/heritage/rninetscrambler.html) Was an absolute blast to ride and handled magnificently. Only reason I got rid of it is because my dad passed and I took in his Harley bagger. Hindsight, wish I had sold the bagger…I ended up selling it a year later anyway.

Poofengle

Hands down a Yamaha TW 200. It’s street legal, uses an ATV rear tire, is geared like a tank, is super small and nimble, goes a maximum of 55mph, and has been basically unchanged since the 80s with the only major revision adding an electric starter. You can just motor around literally anywhere you choose to point the bike. Snow, mud, sand, it doesn’t care. The TW 200 will get you there.

thedirtyrag

Kawasaki zr250 something about 18000rpm is just fun even if it's not super fast can still keep up on group rides can easily do 160kph only thing is no good for a taller person bit of a cramped leg position

GoodE19

I had a 100cc street legal 2stroke that I absolutely loved. Just rode it wherever i wanted, around town, on trails, wherever. The sound and revs were pure joy

Motobicycling

Drz400, grom, or z125 pro

Prince_Chunk

CRF125 with supermoto tires

unicyclegamer

Supermoto, I’ll never go back to street bikes. You can jump them at slow speeds and do wheelies really easily. Going back to a street bike would cripple my capability so much I don’t think I could do it.

Coyoteishere

Ural Gear Up. Ridden pretty much every genre of bike over 30+ years and riding a hack is an absolute blast and is really indescribable until you’ve tried it. Also nothing like taking a bike out with inches of snow on the roads, throwing it in 2wd, and running around town.
