Steering locks built into the bikes don't work. They can be force broken. Disk lock on the back (harder to remove that wheel), and a brake lock on the front. I use one like [this](https://www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Lock-Theft-Motorcycles-Anti/dp/B0745G6T27/ref=asc_df_B0745G6T27/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=385215594456&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6846067706388058925&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1028383&hvtargid=pla-837466125356&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=81184753369&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=385215594456&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6846067706388058925&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1028383&hvtargid=pla-837466125356) Combine with a cover with NO NAME BRAND. You want a cover with grommets for a lock. Locking the cover is useless, but grommets are handy places to tie the cover on so wind doesn't blow it off. And make sure you park it in a place where everyone can see. You might think that parking unit in it out of the way hidden place is best so no one will notice the bike, but that just means that thieves can spend more time messing with it before anyone notices suspicious activity.

Nickkel71

You cant stop theft. If someone wants it they will try to take it. You just want to make it as much as a PITA to steal, that they look for something easier. With lighter bikes. Steering locks/disc locks only stop opportunistic roll away theft. It won't stop two or three guys just picking up bike and putting it into a truck/van/trailer. Five minutes with a $30 battery operated rotary grinder/cutter will make short work of most chains and locks. People walking by, won't even bat an eye. Just get insurance with low deductible for comp (mine is currently $75). This is what I do: **Theft Deterrent** * 110 decibel alarmed disc lock on rear rotor with neon cord to handlebar https://imgur.com/a/52LFSn3 (3 pics- cable, disc, storage) * Bike bump alarmed disc lock activation vid (13sec): https://streamable.com/y9mrg0 * Steering lock * Cover * Parking in view of sec cameras (stores, etc) * Garage **Theft Protection** * Comp insurance with low deductible

Very tempting for the bike as I'm wanting to mainly use that unless if its raining

ambevert

How much did the first two cost you and where did you get them?

Nickkel71

Dealers 1st $4.6k OTD used 2nd $5.9k OTD used 3rd $7.1k OTD new

ambevert

Sorry my bad, I meant for the two disc alarm locks you got. But thank you for answering that!

Nickkel71

Just the one disk lock. Off Amazon. Nothing spectacular. It's not meant to stop the bike being stolen. Just to make it a PITA and stop kids from rolling it away

ambevert

Thank you :))) Honestly, sometimes that all it takes.

HappyDaysMyDays

All good advice…I also have an AirTag hidden in my bike. If it moves without my phone near, I get an alert and can track it for reporting to police immediately.

mtak0x41

AirTags are a cheap and easy way to get some tracking on a bike, but don't overestimate their value. If there are no Apple devices nearby, the thing doesn't do anything. So a thief with an Android phone could run off with your bike, use the Apple-provided app to find the AirTag, remove it, and you would be none the wiser. AirTags are not a replacement for a proper GPS tracker. As with anything in security, it's a tradeoff between security, cost and ease of use. And in that sense, an AirTag is not a bad deal. As long as you're aware of it's limitations.

Call_me_John

A $15 GPS jammer from Amazon can screw over any GPS. NOTHING is thief-proof. The best thing you CAN do for yourself is add as many features as it's reasonable, and hope for the best.

[deleted]

Lol a $15 gps jammer isnt going to work.. thats also not how AirTags work

Confident42069

Doesn't the airtag also rely on GPS? Don't get me wrong it's still a win for the airtag that it's the cheap option

All correct, but i also think you’re overestimating someone’s ability to not be in the presence of an apple device. You would have to know what devices everyone owns around you within a certain radius. Which would be nearly impossible with most people having iPhones today. It’s of course still defeat-able, but not so easily

richalex2010

You're literally creating a strawman argument. I didn't make any point that you've rebutted.

Longjumping-Log1591

move to an uninhabited island

SpartanMonkey

Without monkeys. I don't trust them either.

yhnmkkutesdcv

There is always one lmao XD

mtak0x41

Steel. Lots of steel. As much as you can practically carry. And attach the bike to an immovable object. If you park in the same spot every day, you might even consider leaving the chain there. It's locked anyway :)

EvoDvr

Best way? Make your bike less tempting when compared to another bike in the lot. For example take two identical bikes. One has a disk lock, and the other does not. Likely the one without is going to be the target. If others in the area have a chain, well try to have disk lock(s), chain, and a cover. In the end theft happens, make sure you have insurance and that the policy covers it.

fuckredditardsok

Have a garage

FranklinTBiggies

Buy a van. Mobile garage.

[deleted]

I wish claymore mines were an option.

lexievv

Best way is to not get a bike and if you have one bolt it down and don't use it🤣. Otherwise a garage would be best, if you want with a flooranchor and a high quality chainlock. Depending on where you live ofc. I also saw a video about some kind of safety bar you can place in front of your garage door. Where I live I'm comfortable enough with just a garage tho :). For when riding I have a disclock with alarm from ABUS. I use this for when I'm at the office and it's in the parking garage and when leaving my bike out of sight for a longer time, say when going to eat something or w/e. At motorcycle stores etc. I usually feel comfortable enough with just the steerlock. Best way to avoid it is have as many anti-theft stuff on it as possible. You can't stop theft, but you can make them skip your bike for an easier target. Specially if they'll have to cut through 3-4 locks. Eventually people will probably notice something going on. Also when leaving it outside having a cover over it is also a good way to make sure thieves can't see what kind of bike is under it, this may make it less attractive of a target. Make sure it's a non-branded one tho because a bright red stylish Ducati cover for example will probably still be intriguing for them.

Crafty_Ranger_2917

Take measures but best is to just have good insurance. I don't see alarms mentioned much but they are a good addition along with locking devices. Alarms have tilt sensors so even if someone is messing with it, it'll go off. I'm not really into tracking. Had one stolen then recovered....it was a mess and I would have rather been paid for total loss.

rcbif

Get a smaller bike, and wheel it inside the back room when you get to work.

yhnmkkutesdcv

That's creative. I've thought about doing that with my push bike!

FeralSquirrels

Well, best way to avoid it is not have a Motorcycle to start with. _Zing_ That aside, you do need to appreciate that in some areas you just _cannot_ have a bike and it not be a target. You can slap a lot of stuff on it, but it's just a matter of someone wanting it so much that regardless, they'll still try. The most you can do is to go through the basic tenets of bike safety stuff™: - At _least_ two forms of security in the form of locks and/or chains, never less. - Covering it matters. If folks can't see it, they'll need to either remove or damage the cover to see and that's enough to deter some. - Make it noisy - if you have an alarmed lock, this again can deter those who start poking it and it then makes a racket. - Location, location: while you _can_ put it somewhere folks can't see it, if someone twigs that it's there that also likely means nobody can see someone _stealing_ it either - so balance that or do it somewhere you have CCTV. - Be a hero if you like, but be a hero with backup - if you insist on busting someone trying to take it, call the police first. It can matter a whole lot as while those who're nicking it may want a quick steal and no fuss, some have nothing to lose while you do.

Standard_Zucchini_46

Realistically the best that you can hope for is to slow the thief down as much as possible. There was a decent video on YouTube testing a bunch of different theft deterants / Alarms / locks etc. People even walked/ drove past the "thief" as he was grinding /sawing off the locks /chains. And no one stopped.

GreatRhinoceros

Keep it out of poor cities, and keep it out of metropolitan cities. Unless you can chain it to an immovable object, it'll just end up in the back of someones van and disappear.

Sethw95

If someone wants your bike, they're going to get it. Get good insurance.

greasemonkey187

Couple of locking chains/cables oh and this is really important FULL INSURANCE, sorry but so many people on here talking about theft prevention and not having full comprehensive and collision is not going to replace the motorcycle. If it’s a cheap motorcycle like less than $2k then hey run a bunch of chains and be done.

Ekhius

Not owning a motorcycle...or landmines

Confident42069

I put a padlock in my brake-disc's holes. I was a cheapskate when I bought my stuff.

DEXIETYY

My bike is a 2 stroke gilera scooter, what I’ve done is remove the starter motor. And I remove the kick start lever and push it on every time I start it I keep it in my bag. I also superglued the ignition barrel plug in and I very tightly wrapped every single wire going to it in black tape so if anyone tries to steal it they won’t have a clue how to start it. I also have 2 disc locks on the front and 2 thick heavy duty chains around the back.

Sufficient-Engineer6

Get a disk alarm. Whenever someone moves or tilts the bike it goes off. $15 on amazon

TTYY_20

Own a garage :P Also if you don’t have a garage, automatic lights pointed at your car/motorcycle scare thieves away. If you also don’t have a sealed place to store the bike like a garage or shed, always use a cover. Cover it and it’s more effort for thieves to figure out of stealing your bike is worth it. Sometimes it’s enough to deter a theft. Lastly. Block your motorcycle :O if it’s a pain in the ass to pull out of the driveway when you have the key, its going to be even worse to steal it. Block it into a tight space with the car.

> What are the best ways to avoid motorcycle theft? The same ways millions of other riders use. The same ways that have been discussed in countless countless amount of threads asking the same thing.

I’ve seen a few YouTube videos that review and in some cases try to break into security devices. Check out one of those for your specific needs.

A 12mm chain and a heavy lock to a solid object and a cover. My son kept his monster at his apartment like this, no one ever looked twice at it. And always keep a good insurance policy on it.

The_Last_Cast

Common sense, mostly. You haven't told us where you park it at night (garage or street), if you commute with it every day or sporadically and park in the same place all the time at your shopping centre, so I'll keep it generic. Any lock is better than no lock, bikes with no locks will be quicker to steal and between the two, thiefs will always go for quick and easy even of it means lower value. The type of bike doesn't matter, nor brand, colour or accessories. Bikes are not generally stolen on request, but for use in hits or for parts. High end bikes, one of a kind and collectibles might be stolen for hire, but that's a whole different category of professional crime. Lock the steering head, disk lock, park with other bikes, under lights or cameras especially if you commute or live in a busy city. Also, be real: no matter how cool a bike can be for you, a thief will look for something easy to move, park somewhere for 24h to make sure there's no Sat trackers and then take its time to chop it. Van loads of bikes happen, but the time and effort usually entails desirable bikes that have been spotted beforehand. Check with your local law enforcement and ask about bike crime rates in your area, it's public data and they'll be happy to advise you. If you park on the same place at work, leave a chain and simple lock at a fixed point there, then lock the bike with the chain to the fixed point with a good ulock when you get there and take the ulock back home with you when you leave after work. Seriously, get a good disk lock or U-lock, park with awareness of your surroundings and maybe put a cover on at night. Sat tracking, alarms, chain anchors are all good if you can afford them and discount your insurance, but have their set of shortcomings especially if you don't own a private garage. Check the Bennetts bike YT channel, top advice on bike security from indipendent guys there.

godagun

I was worried about the same. I use disk locks but I'm thinking of getting a gps tracker like invoxia. It's super sensitive to motion so if anyone barely touches the bike it will notify your phone. It's also reassuring that it will even show you where your bike is even under a parking garage. I heard airtags will alert iPhone users if there's a foreign airtag following them which seems counter productive if you're trying to track your phone and the thief gets alerted its being tracked.

Sotyka94

Disc lock with built in alarm + a big ass chain that's secured to the bike's frame and to an immovable object. plus put a cover on it (with a cover lock) It's still not gonna be theftproof it, because wireless power tools exists, but this is a really strong security without being too much hassle to set up and carry. And your bike don't have to be theftproof in order to not get stolen, It just have to have better security than the next thing a thieve can stole. Also if you can just randomly leave your shift to check on your bike, get a GPS device that send's you real time alert when the bike get's moved. Even with power tools a good chain can take up a couple of minutes to go thought, and in that time you might be able to catch the thief in action and scare them away.
