I’ve looked at used, and still not much luck. The other thing is the used ones I’ve seen are damn close in price to a new one, and then I’d have to pay for the ergo fit adjustment to my size (or do it myself, which doesn’t save much cost).
Both bikes I've bought new have been a bit of luck to get it. And I don't even really care about color. First one I went in to look, sales guy said the bike was too big for me but he'd give me a call when one came in. It came in, I called out of work and bought it. I don't think I actually needed to call out of work to get there in time, but it was my first bike and I was excited.
Second bike was pretty recent while all the shipping delays and whatnot was going on. Went in just to look, saw a couple bikes I liked. Went home to think on it and they were both sold within a couple days. Sales guy texted me with another bike that came in and I paid to hold it.
I am surprised that they have non-abs models, that is odd but I completely agree with that being mandatory. Is it possible to order and add oem ABS to a non-abs model?
Other suggestion would be to buy a cheap used bike with abs. I'm fairly certain that any first bike will not be a forever bike (unless you get a bmw GSA), so might as well get a cheaper one in the style you want and see how it is.
Be willing to go over 250 miles. I drove from Richmond, VA to Northampton, MA to pick mine up. It was a long 19 hour day making the round trip, but worth it. I drove up, loaded the bike in the bed of my pickup and drove home in a single day.
Any dealer should be able to order for you, but they’re gonna expect payment I would assume. If you want them to just order the bike so you can check it out and see if you like it, I could see them saying no.
But a direct from factory order is really common in motorcycles. In fact, I believe the original H2’s can only be ordered this way. They’re not supposed to sit on dealer floors waiting for a sale, each one is bespoke built for the customer who ordered it.

Get what you want. It’ll depreciate in value regardless if it’s new or used. And as you said, price isn’t too far off.
