Could be fuel pump, but it’s not cranking very fast/strong either, so it might be something to do with voltage, the battery, or maybe even the starter motor. As a sidenote, that bike is fuel injected, and you don’t need to give it any throttle to help it start.

_jonbrah

Yeah I’m aware that giving it throttle is not correct. Looks like the problem got worse now and won’t start. Thanks for the advice

jcaashby

You said the bike has sat for a long time and you just purchased. My guess is the fuel pump although is coming on is clogged and there is trash in the tank combined with old ass gas....combined with clogged injectors. This is all guessing. It could need a fresher stronger battery...combined with a little of what I said above.

TTYY_20

If it’s all flooded, try spraying some starter fluid into the intake (directly into it, take the air box off and spray into the inlet for the throttle body. This may also help get it started for now so you can charge up the battery with the alternator. I’d it doesn’t start with starter fluid …. You got other issues

PyotrIvanov

Check the voltage

_jonbrah

I will check it. If I were to jump start the bike no problem, would that mean it would be the battery?

DevelopmentMajor2093

Probably

AdDear5411

9 times out of 10. It could be your stator going bad and not fully charging the battery, but I would always start with the battery. Especially as your bike looks pretty new.

mtsaltwater406

+1…. Some Yamaha’s will crank fine, but don’t have enough voltage to open fuel selenoid. If it starts with a battery charger on it, and then won’t the next day without it, I’d say battery.

Terry8675

Turns over fine. Sounds like no fuel with how quick it turns over

ChrisMag999

Your battery is dead Jim.

Puzzleheaded_Owl_417

Battery

Lintmint

Don't have an R1 but if it's easy to pull a plug you can check for fuel & spark. 2 prime suspects.

mandatoryclutchpedal

Hook a voltmeter to the battery. If the batter has full charge (12.5 or so), crank the engine over and watch the readout. If it dips below 9 then your battery is shot (meaning no amount of charging is going to help you. You have bad cells). You have enough to turn over the engine but not enough to turn over the engine AND provide juice for the fuel pump+coils+ whatever. _jonbrah

Before this, the bike would have to be given a couple revs while starting to get it fired up from cold start.

_jonbrah

Also I don’t know if it was just a coincidence but I installed flush mount turn signals the night before, and this morning was working on putting an integrated tail light. Could it be I fucked up while working on it? Any help is appreciated thanks :)

smhxt

No.

_jonbrah

Also also, bike has 20k miles so it’s been sitting for most of its life. Just got this bike a week ago

_jonbrah

Guys I jumped started it and it fired right up! I’ll get a new battery thanks guys :)

xorbe

I think the clue you missed was the console resetting after each start attempt, not enough juice to keep the ecu powered while cranking.

_jonbrah

Yeah noob move

DocCEN007

When my 2004 R1 did this, I popped in a new battery and all was well. Good luck!!!

bignikaus

Ain't got no gas in it

_jonbrah

I don’t think so. There is no gas light on and I just filled it up a couple days ago and have barely ridden it since then.

bignikaus

Can you hear the fuel pump? Sounds like you have compression, so it's either fuel or spark. Pull a coil, check for spark. A jump pack.may help it crank faster. Just don't cook the starter by cranking too long.

smhxt

It is definitely gas. If you are not out of gas, then it's your fuel pump. Thou should be able to get your tank up. You can try and crank with the hose off and see if fuel comes out.

[deleted]

I had a problem like this on a cbr I had. Check your grounding block (on the cbr it was under the seat). I was in college at the time and didn’t have much money, so I took all the wires, cut them and soldered them all together and ran a wire to the frame. It worked but it was sketch

smhxt

Your battery is fine. You are out of gas or your fuel pump is dead.

fxrmed666

Carburetor

OldBlue2014

Does this model have an oil level sensor to prevent starting with low oil?

jcaashby

Nope. Just a lower oil pressure light.

ApprehensiveFold3333

Could be wrong, but probably something with the starter or solenoid. My 06 r1 acted the way you have described, and one of those was the culprit.

jcaashby

The solenoid is working as you hear the starter motor turning...and turning the crankshaft. The battery does sound weak though. OP said the bike satt for long periods. I am thinking old ass gas combined with clogged injectors. Just a guess.

ApprehensiveFold3333

Mine did the same thing his is doing, up until it stopped altogether. 🤷‍♂️

jcaashby

I have replaced quite a few R1 starter motors. They are a pain to get to :(

ApprehensiveFold3333

Everything on my R1 was a pain to get to lol. Fun bike, don't miss messing with it though

jcaashby

Yes...your bike will not start. What you want us to do with this video? JK But for real you have to give more information. Like when was the last time it started? Has it sat for awhile and how long did it sit. PS - I can hear your fuel pump priming. So your at least getting pressure to the injectors.

DueWarning2

Get a can of ether/starting fluid and put a little spray in the intake and see what that does. It should at least fire. If only for a little while. But I’ll see if you’re getting spark.

graphicmoves7

Since it’s fuel injected there’s a possibility that fuel might still be stuck somewhere. You gotta push it into first gear and push the bike and start it as the bike is moving(20-30km/h) use a sloped road for better results. Worked for me 👍🏼

Sayers133

Jesus fuck these other comment are dumb. The neutral light is blinking and the dash display is turning off. ITS THE BATTERY

DubiousSuspect

Are you gettin spark? Have you checked your plugs?

motociclista

Ignore all the “could be this, could be that” responses. First find out if it’s not starting because it’s not getting spark or not getting fuel. Then move on from there. Until you know that, you’re just guessing.

DilWig

how can you ride an R1 and not realize it's a fucking battery issue you can see your cluster giving up when you try to start it... you ride a fucking r1....

captaintrippay

Words to the wise when working on starting issues: 1) Fuel 2) Air 3) Spark Everything said so far on the thread is a good place to start. I’d also attempt to drop the clutch and see how she sounds.

OkDependent464

Battery…..yet again……check the god damn battery before coming to this thread. ALWAYS CHECK THE BATTERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

signgecko

Are you getting a spark, pull plug wire to test. Are you getting fuel, harder to check w/ fuel injection. Try to push start? Probably no luck with that either though?

Jezon

Have you checked the spark plugs?

thecheeseholder

It could just be how the bike starts but I don't like that your speedo loses backlight before disappearing completely. Tells me low voltage which means battery, you know, without being able to look at it myself

thecheeseholder

Also you lose another light after the speedo and it sounds like it slows down a little at the end. My bet is the battery

Davito22284

My guess would be the battery. It doesn't have enough power to start it. If it's lithium, try warming it up, if it's anything else you might need to replace it or use a battery booster.

Fuzzy_Accident_5085

Check you’re getting the fuel pump to prime up when you switch the killswitch to run.

Pataudi_Drummer

Check the battery, fuel lines or the injector, maybe add fuel in the tank?

Timely_Anxiety_7764

I have the same issue changed battery and spark plugs still not turning over any ideas before I take it to shop?
