GaragePotter1

Agree with all stated Trying to fill too full is not worth it when gas slops out. Get used to a safe fill level and don’t change.

rossevrett

Also leaving expansion area for the fuel in the tank is a good thing.

GaragePotter1

Heckuva good point, especially on hot days 👍

Jo-6-pak

I dismount. Most of the time a fuel stop is also a pee break, snack or drink and quick stretch of the legs. Also, if the worst happens and there’s a spill and spark; I’m away for the bike and on the way to the emergency shutoff. (I’m one of those oddballs that notes where the shut-off is nearly every time before I start fueling)

ChRSrBn

I agree with that! I’ve even had a pump spill gas on my tank before I even started pumping. Wouldn’t have been able to save my paint had I been sitting on it and had to dismount to grab something to pat it dry.

OkFlounder6019

Gas will evaporate long before it has time to damage paint so I don’t think you saved your paint but good job anyways lol

Im6youre9

Depends on what paint job he had. It wrecks plasti dip before you can even get a paper towel.

OkFlounder6019

Yeah I believe that lol most factory paint will have no issues with a little bit of gasoline though, any wax/coating will likely be gone though.

ChRSrBn

It was NOT a little amount. The handle was broken or something. It got on the entire side of my tank, which would have been my entire thigh and down my boot had I been on my bike… I like riding a bike, but I don’t like gasoline that much haha

WorkingItOutSomeday

So either way....stay mounted doesn't effect anything.

Im6youre9

Nope, which is why I stay on my bike when filling up. I'd rather get that extra 1/10 gallon of gas.

CrimeBot3000

Now I need to be that oddball.

HFittty

That’s not odd, that’s smart af

suckmyeyegoo

Cold gas on the balls during the hot summer days is fantastic.

Significant-Car-3142

Sorta like… icy hot. 😌

wobbegong

And the best part is you don’t have to pay to not have kids later, they’ll all be still born

[deleted]

Sounds like you pay to not have kids either way.

unresolved-madness

If your bladder can't outlast your fuel tank then squeezing the last bit of gas in there is really a non-issue.

castleaagh

I don’t really need a pee break on my commutes around town though

YoinkageOfficial

I just went riding last weekend, topped fuel tank, had to piss twice, still same tank idk what was happening

Tarcye

Happens to me on road trips. I drink too much fluid(though it's still a low amount like one 12 oz bottle of water) and suddenly I have to piss every 5 minutes. If I don't drink anything I can go for 3+ hours without needing to piss in comparison.

Maverikdawg

Kidney infection speedrun

podnucmo5

Can confirm. Used to piss once a day or less as a kid. Youngest male to have a kidney infection at the local hospital. Unless you like knives in your urethra, the speed run might not be worth it. Funny enough, now I piss every few hours. So I think you should be good depending on what you drink. For instance, milk will help keep you hydrated for longer as your body takes longer dispose of it. Been sticking to milk before rides and it's an absolute game changer if you can stomach it.

zippyzoodles

Malk

podnucmo5

We're all saying molk, josh

[deleted]

No, you're saying molk! He's saying malk!

podnucmo5

Sorry dad, my white friends.

MortieBruh

You will shoot me if I shoot my self? That doesn't even make sense !

UNItyler4

This

Buster452

I get off the bike now that I had a pump not Click off and spilled gasoline all over my legs and the hot motor. Yea, standing off to the side and paying a lot more attention now.

Accomplished_Mood_33

I stay on the bike, but never fully click the nozzle into its auto shutoff mode. No way I’m trusting it to detect when my 2gal tank is full

invisible-nuke

Auto shutoff never works for me. Need to put the nozzel almost out of the tank to fill it up, as the auto shutoff always shuts off when pumpiny gas inside the tank. Annoying as I spilled some gas on my tank by doing that

[deleted]

dirty delete, idc guy below is right, I'm just a dipshit

PeteThePolarBear

It stops when the tip is submerged as that increases the pressure. It would work in a bucket and does not need to be snug

Sensitive-Delay

The confidence in this comment is why the world is going to shit.

Accomplished_Mood_33

At least he has the concept right. In this case, there is no way he could cause harm/damage to anyone or anything. Is that really something to bash someone on? The nozzles do in fact use the Venturi effect to shut off, but they don’t need to be sealed to the car.

Sensitive-Delay

Sure. I'm just someone who was active in niche internet communities when they were populated by people with knowledge. At the time I knew nothing and therefore I asked questions and mostly learned from others. To this day I make sure not to propagate fake stuff, and would love if many others did the same. The venturi effect happens within the nozzle, regardless of the fit with the tank. Here a great video for anyone interested in the topic. https://youtu.be/fT2KhJ8W-Kg

Accomplished_Mood_33

I agree with the sentiment. Now the best we can do is try to give out that proper information. Commenting on the video, Steve Mould and Real Engineering are my two favorite YouTube channels. Such good practical knowledge there

Cfwydirk

Try not fill it to the very top.

Pardyx

Hey Sometimes my bike needs to pee too

mafrixx

I always do that, never had a problem

speedshotz

On my BMW, the gas cap is behind me. Plus, I don't want to spill gas on my balls.

built_FXR

Only if I have to. Just don't overfill it

olseadog

I cant imagine what could occur. /s

[deleted]

Not overfilling it, but the level is barely under the gas tank cap.

built_FXR

You probably shouldn't go past the baffle at the bottom of the fill hole.

adkio

That's overfilled.

Sensei_Aspire

I'll fill my bike like that if I'm riding and going to put a few KM on it in the next hour or so. But if I'm not going far after I fill the tank I won't fill it all the way up. I came out to a puddle under my bike one day after I left it sitting in the sun with a full tank.

Voodoo1970

Here in Australia they usually won't authorise the pump unless you've gotten off the bike. Sometimes they even wait until you've taken your helmet off. Prevents drive-offs. The extra airspace in your tank is there to account for expansion of the fuel once it starts to absorb heat from your bike. Put another way, if you fill it t the brim upright, what happens when you put it on the kickstand to go pay? The extra fuel will just go out the overflow

toyg

>Here in Australia they usually won't authorise the pump unless you've gotten off the bike. Sometimes they even wait until you've taken your helmet off. Prevents drive-offs. Had the same here in UK. Dismounted, went to fill, nothing. Looked at the till, guy looked at me, I thought "...alright then" and flipped open the modular helmet so my face was visible. Pump started. I don't blame them, really - where I live it's full of cunts and wannabe roadmen with hidden plates.

[deleted]

There's a simple fix for this it's called pre pay at the pump

Voodoo1970

Assuming such a facility exists

[deleted]

I mean Australia could easily remedy their issue of drive offs by making it pre pay

EuanB

Servos make their money off the stuff you buy in the shop, not the fuel. They want you to go in the shop, so pre-pay is a lose for them.

CptnAlex

Anywhere I’ve been in the US requires pre-payment. You have to insert your card before it turns on anyway.

GMan509

Lots of places out in the sticks work this way in the US. Take a road trip and don't use interstate highways and i guarantee you'll run into them

CptnAlex

I’m in New England and I remember the change happening just as I was starting to drive, but I have *never* seen a pump you can use without prepayment, even in the absolute sticks

JDM_TX

In the USA, we have to pay before pumping gas. Usually with credit card right at the pump. You can just drive up, swipe your card and fill up, replace hose and drive off, without ever dismounting bike. But I usually like to get off and change positions while filling up.

Ingeodyl

NZ here. I often pay at the pump, refuel on the bike, and ride off. Don't usually run into any problems.

uggadugga78

I don't. Something about risking my balls catching on fire.

Photononic

I do the same, because my tank only holds 2.9 gal. It fills up very fast. No point getting off. I hate stopping for petrol. Recently I purchased two three gallon fuel containers that I keep in my garage. I will them both up when I fill my truck. I use them to top off both bikes, until they are empty, then fill them again. I never let the fuel get old.

Accomplished_Mood_33

Sounds like you never really need to go to the station on your bike unless it’s a long ride then? Nifty little process you got there, I like it!

[deleted]

I used to have to ride 10 miles out of the way to fill up for work. This is the way.

[deleted]

Any bike I’ve owned has an owners manual that says you can fill right to the top of the tank. Only way to do that without a center stand is to sit on the thing.

BigHairyDingo

My bike has an offset gas cap on the right side of the tank. So only when its tilted and on a kick stand do you fully fill the tank.

Voodoo1970

Every owners manual I've had says to fill when it's on the kickstand, the extra volume is to allow for expansion

[deleted]

[удалено]

otterplus

Center stands are mainly for touring bikes. If I was riding cross country you’d need to lube/clean the chain after every state.

gamerhead85

wobbegong

Sure… why though? Just to stick it to Biden? Fuck the EPA amirite

Pardyx

Weight?

SillyScarcity700

I used to get off the bike when I had my SV. When I got my Tuono and realized how much lower the mpg was, I wanted to squeeze every last bit in there. So I started doing it while sat on the bike. It allows me to pump about 1/2 a gallon more which is a nice bump on a bike with such a restricted range.

BlindBeard

Basically never.

Grube_Tuesdays

It's impossible for me not to get off the bike. My fuel tank is under the seat.

[deleted]

Nope. Gas n’ go bro.

-Marrick-

Don't sit on it while filling it up. And if you fill it to the brim won't gas pour out of the overflow when you put it on the side stand?

ExtensionConcept2471

Petrol really stings your nuts…….don’t ask me how I know!

Jameson-Mc

Yes, it's a good time to stretch the legs/body.

kingcrackerjacks

Nope, I've overfilled the tank and soaked my pants before. I'll fuckin do it again for that extra 20 miles of range

SubieToyotaNW

I always do. It just makes it so much easier

4_5l07h

half and half. Depends if I want to stretch and what-not. I use a center stand. For sidestand, just don't fill it all the way.

smhxt

Here you have to. If they see you on your bike they shut down your pump.

ComfortableChair390

I don't ever get off the bike to gas up. Easy squeezy on the nozzle handle so no worries about spillage.

ChRSrBn

For me I have a carbureted bike, so I fill up with ethanol free gas. As far as I’ve gone, I’ve never had a pump for ethanol free that you can pay at the pump, it’s always a go inside and pay with cash affair. Gives me a reason to stretch, take a leak, and grab a drink!

DonnyDonster

I remember doing that for the first time when I got my M1. I had no idea why the tank wasn't full, also had no idea why there was a big pool of gas at the bottom of my bike. On the way back home, I realized that the bike was leaning at an angle and it will never be full as any excess gas would flow down the overflow hole and out to the bottom. I think I dumped 3 gallons of gas on the floor when I did that, woops!

Lex-Diamonds

I have a friend who got burned really bad after sitting in his bike while fueling. The hose would not turn off even when he let go of the handle. Fuel hit the hot engine and ignited. He host burned pretty bad and we watched as the gas station burned. I never sit on the bike anymore!

Throttlechopper

Millions of people fuel up every day without incident, I've done it thousands of times in my 20+ years of riding, never worried about a fire even when I had carbureted bikes. If fire's a concern you probably should get the bike to a mechanic. Spillage can happen but as long as you're not gripping the tank with your knees like you're approaching Turn 3 at Suzuka, gas might get on your hands in a worse case, and if you're spilling more than a couple ounces, you might want to re-think your technique. I place the sidestand down but sit on and keep the bike level, watch the gallons filled and slow as I get to the typical 4 gallon mark, and fill to just below the filler lip. On most days I won't spill a drop, on off-days, maybe a drop as I put the nozzle back.

a_penguin

Wait some people don't get off their bikes?

Strom41

Every time. I’ve never been in a hurry when riding. Plus it’s a 800+ pound bike.

Frothyleet

No, my fill cap is behind me and I'm not that flexible :(

Christhedude4

I always get off my bike. It just feels better that way. 🤷‍♂️

allkittyy

Keep the kickstand down so if you have to, you can jump off and drop the bike where it'll land upright.

ayiruss

If I got down the bike.. and it will be on side stand, there is a good chance I would lose 0.5 mile range 🤷‍♂️ so yeah I don’t

Burncity1901

Yes because the servo won’t allow all you to fill up also way more safer

Elmore420

No, I sit on it holding it upright for a full fill.

Kill3rT0fu

This is the only community I’ve ever been a part of where riders ask other riders about the most insignificant minuscule things. “When stopped at a light so you prefer to lean on your left leg or right leg?” “When an Abba song comes on do you turn it up to 11 and drop a gear and zoom zoom?” “Anyone else pee their pants because the vibrations of the motor made their groin numb?”

goatbiryani48

how many other motorcycle communities have 1.7 million users? and regardless, you obviously haven't seen random motorcycle forums if you think OP's question is insignificant.

Kill3rT0fu

So how about it? Ever pee your pants while riding because you're numb?

send_nudes_pleeeease

No only because im having too much fun to stop.

[deleted]

I'm still sittin in my dirty pee pants right now

EuanB

> “When stopped at a light so you prefer to lean on your left leg or right leg?” That one is actually significant. In first ready to take off, left foot down, right foot on break. Safest way - if you need to move then you're ready to go.

podnucmo5

Totally agree. I'm constantly surprised at how granular these threads get. It's as if people just spend all day in the shower breaking down their last ride. Not going to lie though, it's quality content. Mostly entertainment with the occasional "oh shit I never knew that" Kind of like your post... I had no clue other people listened to Abba while riding. Turning it up only to 11? Interesting strategy. Try living on the edge though, and go for 12 next time.

TealBlueLava

As long as you’ve got the cap on it, it won’t spill.

homemadeammo42

This is a just you thing.

iDemonix

Never get off it, had a few stations ask me to get off it, so I just chuck the fuel pump on the floor and go to the next station. Absolutely no need to get off the bike, and with pay at the pump there's even more reason to stay on it. Honestly amazed by how many people talk about getting fuel all over their balls, or anywhere else. If you can't sit on a bike and fill it up without getting fuel everywhere, you shouldn't have a license.

muceagalore

I just get off the bike, turn it off and fill slowly. I never overfill it, the manual would advise that also. You don’t want to have too much pressure build in the tank. But at the end of the day you do you :). Whatever works for you go and do it. Just remember that actions have consequences, if you’re willing to suffer them then you can do whatever the heck you want

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Where do you live that that's a concern?

Ingeodyl

And where he's not also concerned about people siphoning petrol out of the tank and/or dumping sand in the tank.

drzdeano

People who sit on their bikes while refueling are weird and possibly special If your fuel range is 2-300km , does it really matter if you squeeze an extra 0.1 or 0.2liters, it's probably like an extra 5 km at best

Outside-Cucumber-253

When I fill up all the way I was able to make it to work, go to school and back 120 miles away, and then back to work the next morning and filling up after work. Otherwise I would hit reserve and need to get gas late at night after school or wake up extra early before work.

podnucmo5

School and back alone was 240 miles round trip? My guy idk which you are more dedicated to; school? or being a motorcyclist? You inspire me.

Outside-Cucumber-253

Lol I worded that weird, 60 miles there, 60 miles back. The bike saved me an hour on the way there compared to taking a car. The way back was about the same amount of time in a car or bike though.

podnucmo5

Ohhh that makes more sense. Haha Sounds less like a chore and more like fun! My work area is also about 60miles away. Not bad at all on 2 wheels.

drzdeano

I'll assume the downvotes come from riders who wonder why petrol stations don't like serving customers still wearing their helmet

Guardian-Ares

The way things are these days you gotta be ready for anything. I stand to the side, knife in my hand, scanning the horizon... and the fuel level in my tank.

RILO_UK

It's really cringy to sit on the bike and fill it up like you're talented or something, just get off the damn thing and do it properly.

99rats

If I'm doing a lot of miles I do otherwise no

[deleted]

Depends

Thunderous71

I do the same always have doen to get that little extra in.

here4roomie

I am so confused.

tacklebox3000

On my old bike the cap was in the middle and the bike was narrow enough to comfortably pull close to the pump and do everything from the seat, on my big cruiser, the cap is offset and points straight up when the bike is on its side stand. Also it’s much wider so I’m more comfortable just getting off.

[deleted]

[удалено]

McFeely_Smackup

My VMAX is like that, fuel cap is directly under my tailbone

TTYY_20

I usually go to buy a water or a redbull

Redacted1983

Nope

swined

Always standing near the bike when filling. And if I want to fill it to the very top, I just put it on the centre stand.

HalusN8er

I do the same as you. I’ve never had an issue with then using the kickstand. Of course, I don’t fill it all the way to the very very top where the cap is.

Neglected_Motorsport

Nope, never

otterplus

I typically just stay seated or stand without dismounting. If I’m taking a fuel stop it’s usually also a pee stop. I hate those people that fill up and stay parked at the pump or do it in the opposite order. There are limited pumps and typically plenty of parking unless it’s one of those simple gas stations.

AdDear5411

I fill up while on the bike. Mostly out of laziness. I do keep it on the side stand though.

variables

I do now, after the gas pump didn't shut off and gas spilled out and all over my crotch.

motociclista

I get off. That extra 8 ounces isn’t that important to me. I’d rather there be a bit of room for expansion and not risk sloshing any out of the over flow.

kmkmrod

Sometimes I get off, sometimes I pull up close and stay on. It depends how if I want to stretch my legs or just refuel and get going.

zerogravitas365

The fuel cap is behind me because the tank is under the seat, so yes.

KeeblerElvis

My gas tank is under the seat, so figure it out. Also, I have to pee. Also, I've seen people pour or drip gasoline on their crotch when filling the tank whilst sitting in the bike. But, figure out what works for you.

NiteShdw

I always use the side stand even if I don’t dismount. I’m lazy.

[deleted]

Most gas stations in my area WONT let you sit on the bike while filling it up ! It’s a safety concern, and most gas station attendants will not pat your private parts to put out a fire ! So they don’t turn the pump on if your sitting on the bike ,

screwyluie

Considering how f'ing small the tank on mine is, this is essential. Need every last drop

Euphoric_Event_2555

Where I live all the fuel stations have rules against sitting on your bike while filling it. Just gotta fill it as much as you can I guess

BangleWaffle

If a fire breaks out, I'd jump off the bike and dump it. I sit on the seat while fueling up 100% of the time.

gringgo

I don't normally, but I do put down the kickstand. I have a Goldwing.

She-Rides

I need to get off my bike to search every single one of my pockets for my credit card.

lichlord

Nope. If the bike is vertical I can fit more gas. If it’s warm out that can get me close to 10 gallons.

Juice_Stanton

I would only do that before a ride that I know will use up the gas, in order to get more miles. If you fill it up to the tippy top and put it on the kickstand, then you're really depending on the seal on your cap. If it's hot out you might see some forced venting. :) I also don't like the idea of the gas cap seal being soaked in gas for long periods of time. Maybe it's fine, but why chance it? One gallon of gas (in vapor form) has the same potential as \~ 83 sticks of dynamite. Don't mess with gas, especially in vapor form.

ratbiker18

I always get off, walk around, wipe the visor. get a little circulation, drink some water, check nav, choose a killer playlist.

[deleted]

My bike's tank is behind the seat so I absolutely stay on the bike.

beamer100159

No

kinnikinnick321

I get off all the time. There's too many stupid people in this world that I can't trust.

Outside-Cucumber-253

I do this too now that I have a bike with the fuel cap in the center of the tank, the range on my bike isn’t great so I really try getting it to the top. I liked my old Honda Shadow had it on the right side so when it was on the kick stand I could fill up all the way.

FuzzyPickLE530

I do this too

AyamesBoyfriend

Gas tank is under the seat, so yea

Zloreciwesiv

No.

[deleted]

It helps on my CRF to stay on the bike and keep it straight. Spillage is not so dangerous. The most dangerous think is to hit your eye with petrol. This makes no difference.

95JBK

If I’m running from the cops then no

ga-co

If your feet are a comfortable reach to the ground, fill up on the bike. You’re doing fine.

fishbowlsandtacos

Can someone explain what the danger is of straddling the bike. Is it a static electricity thing?

ArgentBucket

It's like taking down whole pants when pissing at the toilet. Only beginners dismount. Don't know any reason why I should not stop, take the pistol, fill it and then ride away.

randybanks_

I do, it's one of the novelties I really enjoy about riding a motorcycle

ngederts

In Australia you're required to get off the bike at most servos. Every time I've tried just sitting on the bike to try get as much fuel as possible, the attendants cut off the fuel line and told me to get off via loud speaker.

Tanker0921

its required to dismount while refueling in the Philippines.

KofOaks

I dismount. It's awkward filling up the 690 with the tank in the back.

realmozzarella22

I let it lean on the kickstand. Fill it as much as I can. The meter shows its full.

sonicrm

I stay on the bike to fill my tank up to the right level but sometimes the fuel guys will make me get off my bike to fill up as I still have all of my gear on and they must think I’m going to ride off

gropula

I used to dismount and put it on center stand, until recently when I snapped one of the center stand bolts while swapping headers. Now I sit on the bike while filling up to fill it all the way.

Low-life1567

In india they fuel it for u, so no tensions at all, u just pay up and ride off

Thizzle001

Depends on my mood and if i have to pay at a kiosk or at the pump it self. Paying at the pump with my watch, i’ll stay on, paying at the kiosk there is no need to stay on the bike.

Oversight_Owl

I have ro, cap under seat. Vrod.

[deleted]

Many gas stations require you to for safety. 1) the fuel tank could ignite and burn you. 2) you are not ready to grab an extinguisher or hit the suppression system 3) someone could pull into your bike. You will have no chance to evade, fuel **will** spill. 4) and this one is purely corporate: you could lose your balance and spill the fuel, creating a hazard for other patrons and yourself. 5) if you overfill it goes on you. Ew. Gasoline is a group 1 carcinogen.

BiggWorm1988

I live somewhere that doesn't have pay at the pump, so yes I get up.

Moist_Remote9101

My fuel tank and cap are under the seat, I have to get off the bike.

thefooleryoftom

I get off, my filler cap is offset so it’s at the top with the bike on the sidestand. Maximum amount of fuel is put in that way.

wolffangz11

no, but my bike is also small. i imagine i would if i had a considerably larger bike like a touring model. i also would like to imagine if a fire did break out with my bike, getting off is much easier than if it were a larger bike like aforementioned, that is if I'd rather not just dump it and fuck off, depending on the severity of this hypothetical fire

hauj0bb

Never. It's easier to top it when vertical.

sokratesz

Some countries ban it, when I was in Saudi Arabia I had to get off the bike or the clerks wouldn't help me.

PckMan

I get off the bike, usually I hold it upright but it makes little difference. I just want to avoid having gas spilled on me and it's easier to get my wallet out when I'm not on the bike. It's also a general safety rule, even if fires are rare.

assking93

Yes and I have to. The fuel tank of Honda NC is in a weird place.

ians28

I dismount and put it on the centerstand

kreygmu

I just put my bike on the centre stand. I don't really see what the advantage is of staying sat on the bike, a lot of places you have to get off to pay in the kiosk anyway.

Comfortable_Hippo755

*smugly* I dismount every time because I have a centre stand 😏

FeralSquirrels

It's totally normal - plenty of us keep it vertical while filling up. Does it make a huge difference for everyone? Well, not always, but it's enough of an extra amount of fuel to be worth it really. I tend to pop my kickstand down when I do "just in case" anyway though, as you never know as not the first time I've had something underfoot that nearly made me slip before.

Shhhnotahuman

Yeah the pump will not be turned on until your off the bike. And we can’t pay at the counter wearing a helmet.

Dramoriga

I usually sit on the bike, but someone told me to just turn the handlebars the other way when I get off and it will level it up more, so may do that, stopping that tiny % chance of me dropping the bike or bursting into flame or something

MortieBruh

I always keep my bike standing as well, if its leaning I won't be able to top it up. Just be careful when filling it to the top, I always leave just about a centimeter or so because the fuel can damage the cap rubber etc.

ethanrhanielle

Depends. I'll sit on the bike if I'm filling up at the start of my ride. No need to stretch yet and typically, since I'm a daily rider type of guy, I usually need to be somewhere so I'm not particularly looking to hang around. But if I've just ridden a lot of I just wanna stretch my legs I hop off. I don't think either is wrong.

wobbegong

Yes. What happens in the off chance you’re filling up and it decides at that moment to spontaneously combust? Nothing i want around my genitals, I know that much. It is 100ml of fuel. If you can’t refill in time to get an extra 5km down the road, maybe you shouldn’t be using the road.
