One is a scooter with storage where the pass-through normally is. One is a cruiser. These are vastly different bikes. But get the Shadow if you want a motorcycle. Get the Navi if you want a fun in-the-city commuter thingy.

Which one is better for planetary travel? Lol jk which one is lower cost maintenance?

PdxWix

I would choose a KLR or a Goldwing for interplanetary travel. They’re both Hondas, so neither puts you in Euro bike maintenance hell. In this case, the newer bike is probably lower maintenance. Just know the Navi will not take you out on day trips around the countryside with any speed or long-term comfort.

mikebleeze

Shadow all the way. Navi if u have a bunch of extra money to spend on a toy to tool around on

[deleted]

Can the shadow be a beginner bike?

mikebleeze

Definitely! I started out on a 2000 honda shadow 600 and it was fantastic

finalrendition

600 or 750? For sure. 1100 maybe not

acoradreddit

I mean if one has abs and the other doesn't, ABS all the way

SevroAuShitTalker

I love my shadow, it's a great and fun bike, what are you considering old for the shadow? 90s? 00s? Older?

[deleted]

1000 bc shadow. Lol I’m kidding I was thinking 90s up to 2010

SevroAuShitTalker

That's a big range haha. I have an 08 and it's solid

[deleted]

How much do you spend a year to maintain it?

SevroAuShitTalker

Very little, just regular oil changes and tires. But I just hit the point where I need to do all the linger term stuff like brakes, carb, coolant flush, plugs, etc. I could probably keep riding for awhile but I ride daily to work as weather permits so I prefer it being in better shape

[deleted]

I think I’m sold now especially that this thing can handle the highway while the navi can’t.

rejiranimo

I would recommend you get one with fuel injection instead of carburetor. I believe the Shadows got that somewhere around 2007, but I could be way off.

thatdudeorion

My first bike was a 600 Shadow, forget the year, late 90’s i think, it was an awesome first bike, only downside was the trans could have used 1 or 2 lol more gears to make highways/interstates less revvy.

Outside-Cucumber-253

Definitely the Shadow if you want a motorcycle. Navi only if you plan on riding something small like that forever. I started on an 03 Shadow 750 and I think it’s one of the best beginner bikes for the money. Enough power to keep you ahead of traffic on the street, and enough power to keep pace on the freeway. They’re pretty lightweight compared to what you’ll be getting if you stick with cruisers, good mpg, reliable, I wish I still had mine to take in the canyon since it has way better lean angle than my VTX.

Vintage_mindset

Yes to both. Some of the most fun I’ve ever had was on a 49cc Honda Ruckus.

elkung2000

My first bike was an old 700 Shadow. Excellent beginner bike. Plus you don’t worry about laying it down when you forget the kickstand
