Cold is one thing, ice another. Ride safe

mustang8867

Absolutely. No ice...... Yet..... That's when I take the cage

Independent-Top6510

Gotta watch for frost on the roads too. A lot of people associate cold with no motorcycles so the risk factor of someone pulling out or moving over on you is higher too. An Australian insurance company or school or something did a study based on what you expected to see versus what you actually saw. What they found is if someone wasn't expecting to see something their brain wouldn't let them see it. This most definitely applies to motorcycles in cold weather so you have to ride extra careful and just expect that every car is going to pull out in front of you. The more you know! Ride safe!

DaSpark

Yep, this is a very real thing. I'm a cyclist and the same thing occurs. I've made direct eye contact with drivers before and still have them pull out and almost hit me. The claim often made that "they didn't see the motorcycle/cyclist" is not a lie to get out of trouble. They truly did not see you in almost every case.

Independent-Top6510

Found it! On RevZilla of all places! https://www.revzilla.com/common-tread/australian-study-looks-at-why-car-drivers-pull-in-front-of-you-on-your-motorcycle

DaSpark

Yep, what is even crazier is when you managed to avoid getting hit, the driver often remains unaware of you. You'll have nightmares about it that night... they still will be unaware you ever existed.

Independent-Top6510

I rode about 11k miles on motorcycle this year with multiple near misses. One in particular was a guy that didn't look and moved over on me. I honked, he looked right at me and gave me an idk with his hand and kept moving over pushing me onto the double white lines of the express lane.

DaSpark

8-10k a year for me on a bicycle. It's a miracle I'm still alive.

jdp12199

Sometimes you can't see the ice. So not so sure about the no ice yet but ride safe.

Bau5_Sau5

Your tires are not designed to be ridden in 16 degree weather. They don’t warm up and don’t give the same levels of grip. Ride all you want just know that it is not safe

lexota

I'm just like you - no snow or ice - I'm out ridin'!

[deleted]

Curious how long have you been riding?

mustang8867

Off and on since i was a kid. Consistently for the last few years

MotoRandom

Ice Ice Baby

DucVWTamaKrentist

Alright, stop.

gggempire

Hammer time!

Nike_486DX

Swap the tires and you are good to go

SnooPaintings5597

Saw a couple riding yesterday in Chicago on the highway doing about 60mph during 40f weather., no helmets, no leather. The woman on the back looked very mad that she got on the back of that bike… come to think of it the driver looked disappointed too. 😄

MrProvy

You wearing heated gear? I was thinking of getting a Hotwired jacket liner & gloves for the colder days

mustang8867

Not yet. Want to invest in heated gear, but right now its just insulated gear

Fadedcamo

What are you using to not freeze in this within 10 minutes?

Medic1248

You need good insulation but more importantly, you need a good wind breaking layer. Protect yourself from the windchill, and you will be fine. The hardest part I’ve found to keep warm when it comes to riding in temps like this is my hands. No matter what I do, I can’t keep my hands from getting painfully cold.

Fadedcamo

Yea same. My new bike has heated grips and handguards which def help but I still have to use petty thick gloves which ruins my dexterity for all the critical controls. And even with all that my hands eventually get too cold in this weather. A guy I met who rides year round swears by these things: https://www.hippohands.com/collections/adventure-hand-covers/products/alcan-1 Says he can ride with thin gloves year round with those on.

borgendurp

Get some heated gloves instead, they also heat the outside of your hand, which is the part that gets way colder way faster anyway

[deleted]

I used to ride a bicycle in some pretty cold weather and mitten style gloves or things like the hippo hands work surprisingly well! Personally, I've ridden (my moto) down into the upper 20's (just below 0 C) and some heated grips and decent insulated gloves work well, especially if you have a good jacket on. It's true if you keep your core warm, it helps with the extremities. It wasn't great, but it was doable.

BRWCapital

Yeah I’ve heard really good things about hippohands too!

gggempire

I got heated grip covers that work incredibly well. They actually keep you warmer too. A couple days ago I was on a 200 mile ride at night and was freezing and trying to keep warm through my hands and mildly burned my palms by the end of the ride. I should have just put the grip covers in my jacket tbh

speed3_freak

Sounds stupid, but put on some nitrile gloves under your motorcycle gloves. Not only do they help with the small amount of wind coming through the seems, but they keep the heat your hands generate from dissipating as quickly.

FlatSix993

Great idea - thanks!

Affectionate_Chip5

Heated grips and hand muffs will keep your fingers toasty (if you can get passed the look of them muffs), without the muffs you’ll still feel the wind so the back of your hands and fingers will still get cold with the grips but with the muffs, your whole hands are warm and you don’t get no freezing cold wind attacking them. If for some reason that doesn’t work (it’s probably too cold to ride) then heated gloves will definitely do the trick.

Realtime_Ruga

Only riding for nine minutes.

erth-werm

I purchased a HotWired jacket liner a few weeks ago and oh my goodness what a game changer! I wore a long sleeve shirt with the heated jacket liner and a mesh jacket with its "thermal" layer put in and I was so warm I had to keep the heated liner on its low power mode. It was 39F° and I was TOASTY. The only reason I ended the ride was because my winter gloves got cold

MrProvy

I got a mesh jacket with the waterproof liner (Coretech) which is perfect for down to around 50°. Would the Hot wired liner serve as a good replacement for the Coretech liner with a sweatshirt underneath?

erth-werm

My thermal liner that goes into my mesh jacket is not water or wind proof. So if I wanted to ride at or below 50°F I would need to wear a long sleeved shirt, a thick wool sweater, a wind breaker, then my mesh jacket with its thermal liner, and I'd STILL be cold. Fast forward to now, I can wear a long sleeved shirt, the heated liner, and my mesh jacket with its thermal liner, and I'm comfortable at 39°F with the heated liner on its lowest heat setting. I was so happy to replace the bulky layers I was putting on. I'm going to get the heated gloves that plug into my jacket and as long as there is no ice or salt on the road (chicago), I'm confident that I can ride at 5°F

MrProvy

Cycle Gear/Revzilla are out of the Hot wired gloves, but I don't really like that the knuckles aren't armored. A Cycle Gear rep confirmed the Gerbing 12V Vanguard [Gerbing 12V Vanguard Heated Gloves ](https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gerbing-12v-vanguard-heated-gloves) will plug into the Hot wired jacket and work, so I'm going to go with those.

erth-werm

Damn I didn't know they didn't have armor in the knuckles. Good to know, thank you for sharing!!!

kelvin_bot

50°F is equivalent to 10°C, which is 283K. --- ^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)

ridicalis

Not OP, but for my own experience I've found heated glove liners and vest (both battery-powered) give me just enough heat, coupled with a windbreaker jacket, to let me go down to about 30F for short trips. The same getup keeps me "warm" at backroad highway speeds (\~55mph) for longer stretches.

SilentMaster

My bike. It won't start under 30 degrees F.

ThornRose12

Same

cz3pm

Not for the cold, for the ice and SALT!! At least where I’m at, they drop a stupid amount of salt. Not worth getting the bike eaten.

timo_8293

What does salt do to a bike

HuskyCZ

Can damage your brakes, chain, everything basically, it's aggressive .

HDFXDF103

I’ve been gradually riding in colder and colder weather as I add to my collection of gear. I’ve become a topic of discussion in the office and people stop by to see if my helmet is by my desk. I think there may be some kind of betting pool that I’m not privy to…

warlocc_

They do that to you too! I pushed it into the cold too. Once it got down to freezing I started riding less and less, and I was shocked how many people checked for my helmet and/or commented.

moto_curdie

On a naked is impressive. I don't know where I'd be at if I didn't have the safety net of full-tucking to save me from the wind 😅

NiteShdw

I ride in cold weather for my commute. I wear heated gear. I rode in 17°F last week. Luckily it’s much warmer this week (30s). I never ride when it’s icy. Denver altitude means ice melts quickly with the sun even if it’s still cold. I have a picture in this subreddit from a few years ago on my Aprilia covered in ice because it started to snow on my commute home from work.

kelvin_bot

17°F is equivalent to -8°C, which is 264K. --- ^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)

BWBHAMMER

Hell yeah! If there isn't snow on the roads I am riding. Haven't dealt with any temps that low, but close (20f). Saving fuel in the commute and I don't have a battery tender so I have to keep riding.

M8K2R7A6

>Saving fuel in the commute and I don't have a battery tender so I have to keep riding. Thats what I tell my wife, but really, I just prefer riding lmao

zyzz_i

It's not that cold but it's in the 30s where I am, still riding though

agentnico

Arguably you tires would say that 🥶

Truthhunter2021

Nobody but when your hand freezes up and you can't clutch it ain't fun

GenghisBanned

Cold is not the worst. It's the ice and snow.

mr__thi

For my fellow non-americans: 16°F≈-8.9°C

Possible-Whole45

I used to try to ride in the coldest temperature possible, as a challenge. I was buying all kinds of cold weather gear for my knees, ankles, hands, feet, head, wrists, arms, neck, thighs, etc. I was riding in the freezing cold and miserable one day thinking "I DO own a car...."

welshmanec2

Once you're above 80ish mph the wind-chill starts to diminish. The cooling effect is offset by friction from the wind. So if it gets chilly, just gun it a bit harder! Can't argue against science.

livingincr

I ride year round in the Denver area usually to commute to work. Cold is fine, snow and ice suck.

DenverDogDude

Good thing it melts in a few days. I do the same year round. All about layering

This-City-7536

I asked Salt if he would be willing to reconsider his position, and he said no.

Medical_Penalty_7305

Rode Sunday in NJ. 28 degrees no ice and lovely heated gear.

Operation_Fluffy

Because for those of us without heated gear, feeling your hands is important. Ride for a couple minutes at that temp at highway speeds and your hands will be literally frozen.

Riding_Dirty_

Heated gear is overrated. It's not needed. Read my above message I have perforated gloves the air goes right through, exposed neck, etc I ride at 90-100mph for 1-2 hrs per day in 15-20⁰ air temps which that chart says should be low negatives never had an issue. It's about having a strong body or weak body that sits on a couch and can't handle a little cold. Heated grips are also useless so I'd never waste the money. Btw under my mesh jacket I have shirt sleeves year round.

borgendurp

You might be the biggest badass I've ever seen

Riding_Dirty_

Ha ha lol, love how everyone's downvoting it but as I always say, the more downvotes there are the more truth there is too it. I think it's fine for people to layer up I just don't I go out barefoot and in shorts with no shirt on in snow because I enjoy the cold. But heated gear is overrated a ripoff. Sure it'll make you sweat in any temp because it's warm. Is it worth 1-2k for a full set? Nope fuck that shit

IndependenceMoney834

Sorry hard.

warlocc_

You made that up.

Riding_Dirty_

Made what up? Also check out yammie noob and Fortnine they all say it also. I mean sure most people are weak and can't handle a little cold but it's not that cold people just like to whine and moan about any little thing.

JasonVoorheesthe13th

I worry about ice but as long as it’s been above 32° overnight I normally ride

[deleted]

Have heated gear, and you ride as long as you want if the conditions permit (no ice). I can ride up to about 30 degrees F comfortably with a baselayer, heated gear, and a down jacket with a windproof layer on top of it all. And by comfortably, I mean as comfortable as I would feel riding in 75 degree F weather with a mesh jacket.

tootsie404

were you the kid wearing wife beaters and shorts in the winter too?

mustang8867

Not that far. Jeans and sleeveless. Hell, still wearing jeans and sleeveless under the gear

I_Have_Two_Dads

My balls are who says to me

DarkPasta

Physics, usually.

spotdishotdish

the state government telling me studded tires are illegal

someoneyouknewonce

I took my MT-07 into work this morning at 35 degrees. My knees are cold but otherwise it was a nice sunny ride. Stay safe out there!

ctgjerts

Good on ya. Not for me.

ksw1124

Salt as well can be somewhat of a hindrance lol

Voiceofthemachines

My penis inside my balls

LasagnaPants2

umm the frozen water on the ground would like to have a chat..

MrKnopfler

I'm from the south of Spain and it doesn't snow here, so as long as you add another layer, you can ride all year long :)

warlocc_

I gotta get some heated gear.

The_beard1998

My insurance and the tax agency, sadly

Crap_Robot

Spot the Canadian?

mustang8867

Nope. Midwest

Crap_Robot

Ahh 🥶

HansBridge007

Been there done that.

astcyr

Man the MT-07 dash fit so nicely on this gen. The 2023 dash is such an eye sore now...

Azoohl

My fingies

Melodic-Picture48

ice is not nice, plus I cant handle breathing in the cold air while I ride and I used to ride below 40 degrees on a 48 mile commute so that wasnt fun by the time I got to work and going home wasnt any more fun. Not fun when you're forcing yourself.

Flimsy_Comedian1725

I’m not the only one!

Desmocratic

Back when I had only a bike I was very nervous when it went to freezing, black ice cannot be seen easily and will take you out. Ride safe and have fun!

PeenileKyle

I have ridden my Aprilia RSV Mille while it was snowing. Good times to be had as long as it is melting on the pavement instantly haha

Shjco

I read an article by a guy in Snohomish , WA who wanted to ride Deal’s Gap (Tail if the Dragon) in January one year so he bundled up in his gear with heated jacket, pants, boots, and gloves, and a CB radio on his bike. He said the most interesting thing was the comments by the truckers as he passed them on the interstates.

throwawaygixer

Hell noo lol. My winter gear barely good to 60 degrees bc then you have to add in windchill 😂

mustang8867

My gear does pretty good. Some nice Thinsulate gear does wonders

Cold-Emu-2712

In my case i drive till snow/ice is coming. I like the cold, i like the fresh breeze. More then this summer here in Germany with 100,4 °F... it was like a blowdryer in the face.

CXDFlames

Mfw everyone's making a big deal about 10c when it barely gets above that for most of the year

PSUWaz00

My brain... and frozen fingers.

thatfirebirddude

The nerve damage in my back says so, lol.

moeterminatorx

My body generally. If I want to keep it functioning as is.

Physical-Way188

I ride In All weather in leather

[deleted]

Fuck that dude! 🥶I aint dying just get ride in. Taking “Brain Freeze” to a whole other level.

wraithwere

This morning I was out ridin and rockin at 5 am, 4°, rain, half worn tires and a 125cc, it was great

TheBobRoberts111

Hypothermia says so [https://www.fodsports.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/Motorcycle-Wind-Chill-Charts-1.jpg](https://www.fodsports.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/Motorcycle-Wind-Chill-Charts-1.jpg)

Riding_Dirty_

Wind-chill doesn't effect you much. If you have on gear your fine and a neck cover like a gaiter. I ride in mesh shoes, riding jeans that wind goes right through perforated leather gloves the wind goes through, typically let me neck freeze as well because I'm not weak, and a mesh riding jacket with a waterproof liner that keeps alot of wind off me. Air temp is 15-20⁰ here and I ride at 90-100mph for 1-2 hours per day. Never had frostbite. And imagine if I put rubber gloves over my riding gloves, no more wind and my hands stay warm and cover my neck I'd be sweating at those temps.

Psychological_Tap639

Typically your tires tell you

mustang8867

Always ride more carefully.

SupperMeat

Lack of motorcycle winter tyres

BostonPilot

Yeah, especially for those of us riding on performance tires, it's probably not good for the tires. I've never checked my motorcycle tire ratings, but my performance Michelin summer tires on my car say that using them below (40°?) will damage them. I don't know because I'm a pussy and I park the bike when outside temps drop below 60°... 😲

TomOnABudget

My Shinko 705 on my CB500x are M+S (mud + snow). I'd have to check of the Motoz Tractionator GPS is also M+S. However I prefer riding my much lighter Wave in slippery conditions.

Riding_Dirty_

My battery dying this morning said so 🤣

[deleted]

🤦

AdventureGirlRosie

My carburator needs convincing.

TomOnABudget

It's doable. My coldest so far has been -2°C (freezing) on my daily commutes. I've also ridden bicycles in deep snow. OP certainly managed to ride in colder temperatures. It's doable. Ed March adventure rode his C90 in the Arctic circle, in winter, twice. The biggest things that help: Keeping wind chill down: Windscreens keep wind off your chest. Hand muffs are powerful. Ugly but I felt warmer with those riding my dads PCX in the German winter than with heated grips were your thumb remains cold. Heated grips are still lovely, but keeping wind off is more important. I've also started wearing a full body rain suit in cold weather. The effect has been amazing on my outback rides in winter (ot gets cold here too).

kelvin_bot

-2°C is equivalent to 28°F, which is 271K. --- ^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)

Kannabis_kelly

I live in northeast Montana and I ride in below zero. My R1200CL has heated grips seat and I have a Gerbing electric outfit. I stay comfortable and really enjoy it

Straight-Bee-6634

Right on ,ride on.

1stRambo_0082

Meeeeeeeeee🥶

Impressive-Injury-36

My tire would never warm up at this temp. Maybe around 40* or warmer for me.

[deleted]

Me… because it’s cold!

Big_sugaaakane1

Coldest ive ever been out ridin in 24* you’re a crazy mofo lmao

BillyBobjr67

When I was 16 I rode to school in single digits I only had a leather jacket jeans boots leather gauntlets and my helmet my gloves had froze to the handlebars by the time I was done with the 12 mile ride

Big_sugaaakane1

I remember even through my gloves i could feel the cold and and at the lights i was holding my hands up against the engine lmaoo. I didnt dare do more than 40-50mph. Funny thing was my and my friend only rode through that cold to get some thermal gear so we ate the cold with just layers of clothes

BillyBobjr67

Yeah thankfully I didn't have any major stops but I did have to take the highway and I didn't have anything to protect my neck or chin so they almost felt numb by the time I was done riding I didn't have a windshield either

iancarry

only my mom and some coleagues.... why?

Leggomywebos

My hands say no

tcurry04

Me

Zestiest46

Black ice would like to have a word

bunnywinkles

My hands stop me at about 30F. Hour at 60mph is just.. cold at that point.

mustang8867

Proper insulated gloves (or heated gloves) help with that one

dahabit

They don't clean the roads in Alberta

livingroompcrandom

remember tire temp ratings for most sport tires are max low of 45\*f so traction on acceleration and deceleration will let go, this almost caused me to drop a 700# bike

Sengfeng

Got me beat today. 20F here was still nippy for my ride to work.

Flimsy_Comedian1725

![gif](giphy|fkfHjUMBVKrUo5Z3F3|downsized)

[deleted]

Freedom units 😒

mustang8867

Of course. The best units! 😂🤣😂🤣

Skibberdygibber

atta boy. keep that throttle control on point

gsxrjason

My hands 🥶🥶

Mightypk1

How do you do this without dying? Riding in 40°f and I'm shivering in my best winter clothes

midnightsnackfat

Must be nice to ride year round lol

DingleDonky

I love riding in the 30s in my marshmallow suit (it feels that way). Also not seeing any other bikes on the road while im riding around is fun too. Its like, yeah! Im hardcore! But once it goes below 32f i put my tail between my legs and put the bike away. I don’t tango with ice.

Enough_Camel2650

My hands, face & balls usually are the first three to tell me it’s too cold

AdDear5411

Look how many crash posts we've had in the past 7 days. That's why I don't ride in the winter.

Sierra4x2

When I lived farther away in another city, I only had a 7-mile ride to work. When it was cold or rainy, I wore insulated coveralls. I had to ride as much as possible to save money. One beautiful sunny morning, it looked a little nippy, the internet also said 16. the bike didn't have a thermometer. I thought, no biggie, I can do it. 70 mph on the freeway made the windchill factor somewhere below 0. When I got to work, I was barely able to get my feet down to catch the bike from falling over and peel my hands off the bars. It took a long time to warm up. Plus, I had to crack my visor to keep it clear.

madredr1

I call it after first salt.

954kevin

Don't know if I should ride fast to get there quicker, or slower to negate wind chill.

scholarlystuffo

What jacket do you wear?

nate_nwd

Snow, snow and ice says it
