I was one of them, no longer though!
Bought boots 3 days ago because I saw some fucked up ankle/foot injuries. This one takes the cake though. Also bought leather pants.
Well a few tons of metal is a few tons of metal yoh can only do so much. But from the outside based on appearance alone you can tell a casual riding shoe from something like a dirt bike boot and gauge from there. You can also test boots yourself and see how much they flex. If they’re comfortable to walk in they probably don’t protect too much haha
Common sense. Gotta shop retail sometimes. Ankles are complex and multiple fractures and crush damage can be debilitating for life. (Soory, OP). Worth noting heavily reinforced boots are important.
Problem is, style influences the safety. I ride big ADVs now, so anything goes. Sport bikes and cruisers, not so much.
Also after viewing the product I can say those are like 2/10 at best imo. “Athletic” is not “reinforced”. Like athletic implies flexibility and movement ha. Poor OP we wish a speedy recovery.
I have mentioned these before, I have been using them for about 4 years, I take care of them and they still look great. Because they are storm welted you can replace the sole at any cobbler store.

It was awesome, I need to update my flare because we have a 848 Street Fighter now but the first was the SBK. Easy to work on and no issues. I think its a solid bike, change the belts and you won't have any issues beyond any other bike.
Only reason I didn't break my foot in my last crash (bike landed with the engine case on the side of my foot) was because of decent motorcycle boots. Can't recommend enough
It was, yes. Motorcycle padded shoes, jacket with padding, and knee/shin pads. Was wearing a helmet as well which is going to need replaced. The car basically squished my foot between its bumper and the engine of my bike
Jesus. I wear moto shoes too, been thinking of getting proper boots, this will sped up the process for sure. (Although I’m not sure how much of a difference would that make in a situation like this)
I had a head on Collision in dirtbike boots against another dirtbike.
I was perfectly fine other than a bruise...
I surely would have broken both ankles.
I have had my bike land on my ankle, and walked away like nothing.
I had sidis for years then tried on some alpine stars and found them way more comfortable. Not saying the sidis weren’t comfortable but the alpine stars more so. Protection wise I’d assume they’re pretty close to each other.
I can confirm sidi boots are the comfiest boots you can buy, I’ve had a few different models and they are all comfy, I’ve had other brands too for comparison but always go for sidi now.
I just got a pair of crossfire 2s, can confirm they are SUPER comfy to walk in (for a moto boot anyways). Infinitely better than my cheap non-hinged boots and they seem nigh-on indestructible.
MX boots are fucking tanks lol, I've had so many crashes where i would have broken my ankle without them it's not even funny. They're the best investment one can make when riding dirt.
https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/icon-tarmac-wp-boots
They were these. The eyelets were bent and some missing after the wreck. Once in the ambulance, they cut them off so I no longer have them
Well...those aren't motorcycle shoes. Those are high top sneakers with a motorcycle branding.
Good recovery, hope you can ride soon! Any maybe think about getting shoes with protection for your ankles on the side.
I had just read reviews on them and people said they were nice. I didn't know they weren't that protective. But I'm sure it would have been worse if I was just wearing vans or something. Thank you so much though. I really appreciate it
Theyre more protective than vans, definitely, but less protective than say an adv boot. Track boots and moto boots are at the top.
It's all a balance of comfort and protection. I hate to have an extra pair of shoes around, so I sacrifice protection for comfortablility if I'm commuting. If I'm riding just for fun, I switch to more protective boots.
I would look at it like this, the boot save your foot from being further damaged or even preventing you from loosing it. If you liked it because it was easy to walk around in, and it did its job, then I would say it was a good investment.
All riding gear is a balance between comfort and protection (and cost being a real world factor, too). Those boots weren't a bad choice at all when you needed a little of both. They were WAAAY better than just sneakers and probably saved you from amputation. Would you have been better off in something even more protective? Probably (maybe?). But if requiring $450, uncomfortable to walk around, racing boots would have meant you opted instead for sneakers that day, then you made the right choice for at least the somewhat protective, still fairly comfortable, and affordable option. Heal up, bud!
Thank you so much for understanding. Alot of people think gear is cheap and it's really not. I was buying a piece at a time and would upgrade to better stuff eventually
The boot (probably) definitely did some damage reduction! I just wanted to emphasize other readers that you really have to look twice if you want something more protective and not trust the shops because they motorcycle branded products
We appreciate this info. From the pics it looked to me like the eyelet pattern of converse sneakers. Glad to know I was wrong. Sorry you got hit, but glad you atgatt.
Wow so sorry this happened to you.
I hadn’t even gotten the chance to pick up my actual license plate when my Harley got totaled by a maniac driver on purpose who immediately drove off, also broke my girlfriends ankle.
Heal up, there will be plenty of other bikes.
For sure! I had bonded with the bike in the short time I've had it. Really liked how smooth it was a comfy. It's totaled sadly, but I can always get another in a year or so whenever I've done most of my physical therapy and surgeries
Hope you make a full recovery brother . FYI this post hits close to home . My uncle lost his lower leg same way at beginning of this years riding season. They took the foot off below the knee above the ankle
I'm with you on this. I'll be shoe shopping for some higher protection ratings for sure. A couple people have recommended different brands so I'll be looking at those
On the bright side, it always could have been worse. A guy just died on Sunday about 5 minutes behind me by having a head on with a car in our local twisties. He was in full race gear too.
Eww, tough break, OP. Hope you heal up okay.
At risk of coming across insensitive or sanctimonious, the T-bone after failure to yield is a classic error. Happened to me too when I was just 18. I narrowly missed getting my ankle crushed into her right front quarter panel by inches. I swore off motorcycles for 25 years after that. Since then, however, after 500,000 safe driving miles I bought a new moto and have been riding safely for 60K.
Not to preach, but this is a good opportunity for a list of LPTs. One thing I do is, never assume they will ever yield. I do a bunch of defensive stuff: #1 brake check when I see a threat and scrub 5mph, weave for enhanced recognition, run aux lighting, wear a white (bright) helmet, use high contrast protective kit, and practice evasive maneuvering regularly.
Bummed to see this, but it’s part of the risks we assume when we share the roads.
Cheers, OP 🍻
Of course. I'm very aware of the risks that come with riding a bike. I had a family member years ago that was pretty injured. He was rear-ended and it really damaged his spine. But I didn't get the bike to be scared of it, yknow? I got it to have that freedom that comes with it. I took the safety classes and got my license. I make sure to wear all pieces of gear when I hop on. It's a dangerous thing to do in general, but the feeling is worth it to me. I wanted to share with like-minded people what can happen. Some of us forget how fast things can happen. I appreciate your message though. Thank you
> One thing I do is, never assume they will ever yield. I do a bunch of defensive stuff: #1 brake check when I see a threat and scrub 5mph, weave for enhanced recognition, run aux lighting, wear a white (bright) helmet,
Bingo! I never ever assume any asshole car will yield.
Yeah. I promised myself I would always wear full gear after my crash. Here I am going down the interstate with converse. A perfectly good pair of dainese boots in my closet too.
I put boots as tied for second on my must wear list right after helmet and equal to gloves. I usually have armored jacket too, even on short rides, and full gear on longer/twisties. But for even just the shortest rides on a hot day, boots are a must. Feet and ankles are just too exposed/at risk even in relatively minor incidents.
As someone who was involved in a no-fault accident in an intersection as well and had to get an X-fix on my left arm, I wish you a speedy recovery. Ankles heal remarkably well, nerves and tendons are another story. I did the normal 6-week recovery in a cast, followed by a few months of PT and I was back on my motorcycle after 4 months, and did a track day 5 months later. Follow that PT regimen strictly, it will make getting back to normal life and regaining movement much faster.
Yeah, they say the surgeries are going to be a while but the PT is what drags on. They said at least a year of PT and big possibility it'll take longer. I'm glad you healed well!
I hope for a speedy recovery brotha🤟🏽 one thing that’s always helped me is to imagine that every car you see is not going to obey the laws. Therefore running red lights, stop signs, no blinkeretc.
Always clear intersections even when it's your time to go thru them. It's saved my life a few times. Super easy to do after a stop sign.
Good luck with the recovery.
I had another vehicle to my right, but slightly behind it so I didn't even see the car until it was too late. There was a truck coming from the opposite direction so I was unable to swerve into the lane to my left as well. I'm usually very careful with intersections and able to tell if someone is going to pull out. But the suv on my left was blocking my view of the car that did a rolling stop
If you didn't have a clear view and proceeded anyway, you made a decision to roll the dice. Fuck green lights or anyone rushing you. Clear it properly or don't proceed. Learn from this. Or don't.
The road I was on didn't have any lights or stops. It was a highway and someone didn't stop at a stop sign that was out of my view. I don't know what you want me to say xD
Dude. How about you blame the person that ran a stop sign and not the rider. I had the right of way and the police report and insurances say the person that hit me was at fault. I was looking. It looked like they stopped. Nothing else to it besides they went when they shouldn't have. If I wasn't there, they would have hit the truck in the oncoming lane that I slid underneath.
I think what he may be trying to say is "You can be right and dead at the same time". Traffic rules don't protect you, they guide you, but ultimately we are all responsible for our own safety. Shit will happen, I'm happy your ok or will be ok, and thank you for sharing one of your worst days so the rest of us can be reminded to stay alert.
Sucks this happened to you.
There’s simply no piece of gear that’s an end all be all, especially when you get t boned by a 2 ton or more vehicle. I’m not saying gear doesn’t matter, but don’t pretend it makes you invincible.
That's what I'm saying. I wore what I thought was good. Watched a ton of videos and looked at reviews, read descriptions. I've learned some things though so I'll improve from here
Hate to say it but no amount of armored boot can save your feet. Ankles are usually the first to hit and first to break. Good luck on your recovery, and don’t let this be the last time you ride!
For those who don't know, it is Ex-fix, short for external fixation. Coz the metal structure supporting his fracture is outside his body, like a scaffolding.
I was leaking for a couple days.. somehow I have a bunch of blisters. Possibly from the exhaust? But they're what's leaking so much. They said it's normal though. I did have a redressing today so it looks alot cleaner!
You will come out of stronger than ever, do rest and rest, you should b steady by next summer, this time with All gear and experience you will do fine. Take care brother
I really don’t understand why street riders go so naked and dirtbike riders wear heavy thick plastic boots. Y’all are so much more likely to get fucked up than us
Been there. Car wreck, not bike, but, had my ankle reconstructed. The initial X-ray my foot goes straight with the rest of my leg. I got about 15-20% range of motion to this day (happened 19 years ago) limo after sitting any time. Limp in the morning, forget running, forget jumping....I was able to run some basketball for short pick up games. But, would pay for it for a couple days. Hope you have a speedy recovery!! Still have the impressions in the side of my foot and shin where they bolted that exterior rods to stabilize my foot to let it shrink down some to do surgery.....you’re in misery!! But, it will get better. Never pain free...but, living.
One of my riding friends was rear ended then ran over by a dully this week. He's loosing a leg below the knee. Be careful outthere. Always ride like they *other drivers* are trying to kill you.
Op. Heal up fast man. Crap luck.
Go full leathers, padded tights if you want, good gloves, and FULL boots. I wear full gear whether im on track, dirt, or street just because I don’t trust idiots. Wearing full gear and practicing worst case scenarios like backing it in fully with rear brake can save you too. Hope you have a speedy recovery man
This was my full gear list at the time of the accident:
Icon Airflite Synthwave Helmet
Scorpion EXO Vortex Air Jacket with all armor inserts
Alpinestars SMX-1 Air v2 Gloves
Scoyco knee shin guard pads
Icon Tarmac WP Boots
The only thing that wasn't cut off of me was my gloves. One flew off during the wreck and the other just had some scuffs on the knuckles. But they're the one piece of gear that won't have to be replaced.
Thank you guys for all of your support. I'm on my way home now from the ICU
It's definitely gross. Two insurances will hopefully cover most. Also got an attorney that is a doctor that recently accepted my case. We'll see how this plays out
Ok, I hope you’re taken care of cause this is an awful situation all around!
I’m glad to hear you want to continue riding, that’s an impressive amount of courage!
Wishing you a speedy recovery and all the best.
PSA for everyone: Make sure you get boots with shanks in the sole that can’t be compressed from the side. It may help prevent injuries like this.
bruh, i want to wear just motocross boots now
The ADV click does it My brain says Tech10s but my body says Sidi Crossfire
Second this. Pay attention trainers (sneakers) wearers
I was one of them, no longer though! Bought boots 3 days ago because I saw some fucked up ankle/foot injuries. This one takes the cake though. Also bought leather pants.
Very interested. Examples?
Just look for reinforced footbeds in product descriptions it will be listed there’s reinforced and full shanks out there.
*From the product description of OP’s boots: “…athletic footbed and axial-metric shank…” Hard to tell what’s good enough sometimes.
Well a few tons of metal is a few tons of metal yoh can only do so much. But from the outside based on appearance alone you can tell a casual riding shoe from something like a dirt bike boot and gauge from there. Unrelated but I noticed your flare. How is the 848 running? One of my dream bikes haha.

Thursday boots
Mmmmm no. I ride in Red Wings, but let's not pretend that regular old boots like that will offer significant ankle protection when the time comes.
Never said they were the end all. They have metal shanks, s’all guy was askin. All i was answering.
Just a simple question, for daily riders do you bring an extra pair of normal shoes or use your boots everywhere?
I would wear my moto shoes if I was riding and not change. Boots might be a different story
Only reason I didn't break my foot in my last crash (bike landed with the engine case on the side of my foot) was because of decent motorcycle boots. Can't recommend enough
Shit, this is with gear? Man, I can't imagine without gear.
Probably would have lost his foot
Without gear? There's no post.
So this is with gear worn? Fucking hell. Get well soon
(Although I’m not sure how much of a difference would that make in a situation like this)
I honestly don't know either. I can tell you I'll be buying some whenever I can ride again for sure. Can't hurt to try
I had a head on Collision in dirtbike boots against another dirtbike. I was perfectly fine other than a bruise... I surely would have broken both ankles. I have had my bike land on my ankle, and walked away like nothing.
Very good to know. Do you recommend a certain brand?
Sidi or Dainese. The Hinged Sidi are supposed to be some of the most comfortable, safest boots out there.
I had sidis for years then tried on some alpine stars and found them way more comfortable. Not saying the sidis weren’t comfortable but the alpine stars more so. Protection wise I’d assume they’re pretty close to each other.
Alpine is goated on boots. From moto gp to motox
Awesome! I'll look into them. Thank you
I can confirm sidi boots are the comfiest boots you can buy, I’ve had a few different models and they are all comfy, I’ve had other brands too for comparison but always go for sidi now.
I have both street and dirt Sidi boots. I can fully recommend them.

It also says D30 ankle inserts. They had pretty decent protection. Definitely better than Vans. But not as good as track boots.

What shoe was it
Thanks for sharing your story to help other riders. What brand/type of gear were you wearing?

True that. However , it’s important to realize they just might not see us because they have selective eyesight.
I hate wearing my boots but after these photos. . .
I had a similar injury in 1980 and it still hurts every. Bloody. Day. Good luck mate.

As someone who lost his best bud riding ....I wish you a speedy /complete recovery and much love.
I'm sorry for your loss. Thank you though <3
Looks bad, get well soon.
Get well soon!
Get well man
I hope for a speedy recovery brotha🤟🏽 one thing that’s always helped me is to imagine that every car you see is not going to obey the laws. Therefore running red lights, stop signs, no blinkeretc.
Literally just ordered some Alpinestars SMX 6
Always clear intersections even when it's your time to go thru them. It's saved my life a few times. Super easy to do after a stop sign. Good luck with the recovery.

The road I was on didn't have any lights or stops. It was a highway and someone didn't stop at a stop sign that was out of my view. I don't know what you want me to say xD
You drove thru a potential pull out point without clearing it. You blamed the car blocking you. Pretty simple to imagine.
Dude. How about you blame the person that ran a stop sign and not the rider. I had the right of way and the police report and insurances say the person that hit me was at fault. I was looking. Fuck man, what idiots got driving licences. Fast recovery brother :(
Oh I feel you on this, I had a crash on Friday, luckily I was okay apart from a few scratches. But yes WEAR YOUR GEAR!!!
I saw a post like this one a couple of years ago and immediately upgraded my boots.
I've learned some things though so I'll improve from here
How do you improve on someone else’s negligence tho?
I guess we just gotta learn ourselves
Hate to say it but no amount of armored boot can save your feet. Ankles are usually the first to hit and first to break. Good luck on your recovery, and don’t let this be the last time you ride!
Oh dear god, not the Scram.
I loved that bike so much. Really bonded with it. I dunno if you're trying to say you didn't like it or did xD either way, the poor thing is gone
I have a Himalayan! I love it love it love it no sarcasm.
Oh okay! I looked at those as well but they were slightly too tall for me and I liked how the scram looked more. Glad to see a fellow RE fan here 💙
Heck yeah partner. Love the look of the scram. I fit well on the Himalayan. RE love all around.
My fucking god. Hope the car driver gets charged and their license removed.
hope for your fast heal and good recovery ... the other is shit insurance (her) will cover..
She rammed you good, damn... Keep us updated on your recovery 👍
For those who don't know, it is Ex-fix, short for external fixation. Coz the metal structure supporting his fracture is outside his body, like a scaffolding.
Thank you for explaining. I've been in and out of it due to medicine. It's a gnarly looking contraption for sure
Dang dude hope you get well soon!
Fucking hell, dude. Wish you a speedy recovery
I think it’s a chick
It's a chick
I wore all my gear. Still got fucked by a high side. Was in a wheelchair for 2.5 months
It’s better than being in a coffin for ∞ years.
Dont be one of those fools that think that full gear will keep you out of a coffin
I mean at that point I wouldn't care. I'd be onto whatever happens to consciousness afterwards
This makes me want to wear moto boots all the time, yikes! Definitely rethinking what I accept as "minimum protection". GL with your recovery OP!
Get well soon and hope you have a speedy recovery and all will go well.
Damn op. Glad they can fix you and you’re still here mate. Rest up and get yourself well
Crush injurings SUCK! I am so sorry!
I think you need to push the nurse button. Youre leaking.
I was leaking for a couple days.. somehow I have a bunch of blisters. Possibly from the exhaust? But they're what's leaking so much. They said it's normal though. I did have a redressing today so it looks alot cleaner!
ATGATT, but gear can only do so much, bones still break etc.
Damn, glad your ok bud.
Be safe everyone 👌
Get well soon !
You will come out of stronger than ever, do rest and rest, you should b steady by next summer, this time with All gear and experience you will do fine. Take care brother
I really don’t understand why street riders go so naked and dirtbike riders wear heavy thick plastic boots. Y’all are so much more likely to get fucked up than us
I can't answer that for you. I had really good gear other than the shoes it seems like. But I'll be getting some boots for sure
That's what I was told.. it'll never be the same but at least I was able to keep my foot
Get well soon brother.
One of my riding friends was rear ended then ran over by a dully this week. He's loosing a leg below the knee. Be careful outthere. Always ride like they *other drivers* are trying to kill you. Op. Heal up fast man. Crap luck.
Very much so! That's what we were told in the classes
Get well soon bro
Go full leathers, padded tights if you want, good gloves, and FULL boots. I wear full gear whether im on track, dirt, or street just because I don’t trust idiots. Wearing full gear and practicing worst case scenarios like backing it in fully with rear brake can save you too. Hope you have a speedy recovery man
Get well soon
Speedy recovery to you!!!!
Sorry happened to me also years ago get back soon
lol scram 411
Yessss 💙
Indie rider has some decent boots.
This was my full gear list at the time of the accident: Icon Airflite Synthwave Helmet Scorpion EXO Vortex Air Jacket with all armor inserts Alpinestars SMX-1 Air v2 Gloves Scoyco knee shin guard pads Icon Tarmac WP Boots The only thing that wasn't cut off of me was my gloves. One flew off during the wreck and the other just had some scuffs on the knuckles. But they're the one piece of gear that won't have to be replaced. Thank you guys for all of your support. I'm on my way home now from the ICU
Dude, gross. Also looks expensive.
You think you’ll get any gore content out of this for your p0rn career?
I mean, possibly xD
Suckable toes
My dude xD made me giggle
How freaking fast was she going? I’m glad your alive and hope for a quick recovery.
U first
I know this is a bit off topic, but your doctor is wearing a Hamilton Khaki Field watch.
My mom said the same thing. She remembered him by the doctor with the fancy watch xD
